We've lost count of how many RV shows we've attended. So, here are our expert tips for attending an RV show, whether this is your first RV show or your hundredth. There's a great deal you can do to prepare for an RV show before you arrive and before every day you attend. The following RV show tips will help whether you're attending large RV shows known nationwide or local shows nearby. It doesn't matter the size of the show or your purpose of visiting, they will help you have the best visit possible. Of course, if you attend some of the larger shows, like the Hershey RV Show, Florida RV SuperShow, or the California RV Show, these tips turn into must-do's!
Every January, since I don't know when, Tampa has hosted the Tampa RV Super Show. I believe it's called a Super Show because all the heavy hitters are in town. Who are the heavy hitters? General RV, Lazy Days, Camping World and Airstream of Tampa to name a few. All of which are centrally located here east of Tampa on I4. If you want to know anything RV, this is a show you must go too. Even if you don't have an RV (yet), it's still a must go show! If all you get out of it is dreaming that one day you could own a Class A Motorcoach or a more conservative pull behind trailer or you're looking for something to haul your golf cart or motorcycles in, this show will knock your socks off! This outfit that put this on, knows what everyone is looking for. Everyone that goes, has their own purpose in mind. I first went years ago to evaluate all types of RV's to match my need. I went looking for a Fifth Wheel Toyhauler. You get to compare all manufacturers designs and new features. The manufacturers also have their RV units on discount, so if you're looking to buy this may be a great place to hunt for your next RV. I would be lying to you, if I didn't tell you the real reason I go. I go for the Kettle Corn! Every Iowan, loves popcorn and my favorite it Kettle Corn! This year, we were so focused on why were there, I completely forgot about the Kettle Corn – nor did we even smell it! I know it was there, I saw someone eating it! I should have stopped and asked but I didn't. You'll have to wait and see towards the end of this broadcast to see what my number 1 thing I learned at the Tampa RV Super Show! Why did we go to the Tampa RV Super Show? We went specifically to learn more about RV parks. How did we do that? We talked to a lot of people! We got so wrapped up in talking to people that we closed the place down, and in fact, we should have gone back for a 2nd day but we simply didn't have enough time. I'm going to list out our take aways! First off, let's talk about where is everyone coming from? Well, unless you're like me and you just walk up to someone and start talking to them to find out, just check out the parking lot! I counted 10 state license plates including Canada as we were walking into the show. I'm sure there were others. Of course, everyone is from the North, LOL. Here are the states I saw Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, New York, Maine, Michigan, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and drum roll please……Alaska and then of course, there was Canada. These same states have appeared in the RV parks that I've visited. Funny how Iowa doesn't have a grand appearance. I attribute this to Iowan's like to go to Texas and Arizona for the winter, along with Minnesota and Missouri, must the the Mississippi divide. LOL I don't know. These same states visit my short term rentals. So for me, it's safe to say I'm confident where I'll be marketing in the future! When you first walk into the RV Show, they conveniently route you through the Airstream display. It's a red carpet display and it's inside out of the weather! The day we went it was blistering cold, so it made it nice inside. Airstream revealed it's new eStream Concept Travel Trailer – what is that? Think about the green energy Tesla – same concept but in an RV. I'll leave the link so you can see it for yourself. My takeaway from this is a no brainer, I'll need to research what type of connections they are using for the Electric hookups. Hmmm. Once you move along the red carpet you now enter one of the 3 vendor rooms. OH, the vendors and let me tell you, this is where the bulk of everyone hangs out except if you're RV shopping. Why? Some vendors offer Free Stuff, if you sign up for there newsletter. I don't typically like to collect junk mail, so we only collected 2 free items. 1 was a fly swatter! Every RV'er needs a fly .swatter, so this was a useful free thing. As luck would have it this same vendor which I'll share in a moment also gave us a free T-shirt. That I'll either sleep in or work in. I'm always on the hunt for a good t-shirt. This Vendor, RVezy caught my eye because they offer a service, where I can advertise my RV on their site for rent. In other words, it's kinda like a short term rental, but you're renting out your RV. You might have this awesome mountain view where you could allow someone to come stay in your personal RV. This was attractive to me, because we just put in 100amp service in our front yard and soon we will hosting RV Farm Stays or they can even rent out the RV space and bring their own. This is also applicable to RV Parks, it may be an option where we purchase RV's and place them in our parks for rent. This would allow those who have not yet decided to purchase their own camper but it would give them the experience first! Then they could decide. Here's something else about RVezy we found quite entertaining, it's their logo on their T-shirt. It features a picture of a camper on the front of the shirt and it says – “I Sleep Around”. We definitely thought that was a catchy marketing strategy! I'll post a picture in the notes. Another cool thing I saw this year, is a lot of vendors starting sharing their own QR Codes on their booths. This allowed you to download either an app or information about their products. So if you're the shy type and don't like interacting with people or don't want to get stuck talking to a sales person, you click and keep strolling. I did this at Camp Florida. I didn't need to talk with anyone to download an App that basically has a bunch of RV parks listed in their app. This was interesting to me, because I want to see parks that may be new or it may list a park that I missed in my google search, as I search for a mom and pop park that may want to sell. This app just made it a lot easier for me to locate a park in the area that I'm looking to purchase in. And this just became a site that when I get my park, I'll be marketing it! Cool stuff!! I told you from the beginning, you can go to a show and learn a lot!! As I continue, my search to find my ideal RV park in Florida, I like looking at what other RV parks have to offer. We ran across a display that was advertising a new RV park in Webster, FL that we hadn't heard anything about. We collected the information on Oak Valley RV Resort as we will be booking a stay with them in the very near future. When you go to their website, the first thing you see is a YouTube video on their new Fiber Service. They know that a lot of RV'ers today need or want great WIFI service, as a lot of RV'ers today are full timers and work from the RV, so they tout their new fiber service. It was interesting to learn how they setup their fiber service, reminded me of my old IT days. What is your favorite RV app that you use to locate a park with all of your needs? Please email me at info@fearlessinnovator.com! Ok, listeners, you gotta help me out with this one. A lot of newer parks are starting to add Pickleball courts. Just to keep this real, I have not yet played pickleball to understand the draw to this game. Believe me, I am the competitive type and if I could have played basketball all my life I would have, if I could have earned a living. Sorry, I digress but here's the deal. I can't tell you how many RV parks that I've been in and I have yet to see ANYONE playing pickleball! Quite frankly, I really don't understand it either. I mean the average age of RV'ers years ago was 69, it's closer to 49 these days. Along with age comes knees and hip problems, ask me how I know! I just don't see RV'ers getting into Pickleball. Give me your feedback on this one, because I truly want to know if pickleball is something you all are interested in. If I get compelling evidence that you all enjoy this, then I'll consider adding it to my park but for now I'm going to hold off. Please email me at Info@fearlessinnovator.com. After a couple of hours in the vendor hall, we ventured outside to go look at all the new designs and features the manufactures had to offer. WOW! Not only were the upgrades fantastic but there were new manufacturers there that focused on green technology. There were manufacturers focused on newer travelers on a budget. Some units even had a tent on one side for the kids and inside was for the adults. The point is they have RV's, Coaches for your desired purpose and all shapes and sizes. As we were turning the corner looking at the tons of RV's, out of the corner of my eye, I see a guy carrying a camera and filming who I believed to be his wife. I said to myself, that looks like a YouTuber. So beings the shy person that I am I walked over to them and say, “that just reeked of YouTube!” The girl giggled and said, yes, we actually a host a YouTube channel. I said, that's too funny, then she said the name of it is, Enjoy the Journey. I said, cool. She then went on to ask us questions about our journey in RV'ing and once she learned that we were full timers and said could you mind sharing a bit of your story and then giving us credit for the show. Of couse, I said yes. So we did a little segment. That was fun! In complete transparency, I had never heard of the Enjoy the Journey and this was just a complete random event that occurred, I wasn't star struck or anything like that. I now subscribe to their show! They have over 158,000 subscribers. Who knew? Another little tidbit for clarity, we actually ran into these folks at a much smaller RV show, it wasn't the Tampa Super Show but I thought it was worthy of telling you. I can't tell you how many people we ran into that day at the Tampa RV Show but I will tell you about 2 of my favorites. When I say, we ran into them, they actually ran into me. I have this tendency to check out what you're wearing, and if you have something that I either recognize or just happen to know something I about, I will strike up a conversation with you. So Kurt and I were in line to get something to drink and I see this couple, their doggie a German Short Hair had on a sweater that matched the guys hat! It said, they were Iowa Hawkeye fans, well you bet I hollered out, GO IOWA! The guy smiled and then I asked where they were from and they were from Eastern Iowa – and of course, they were super friendly, just like all Iowans! We actually hung out with them for several hours and then the guy says, hey, you want to go see the RV we picked out, of course we said Sure. So they took us to the Road Warrior by HeartlandRVs – (heartland, go figure!) The specific module was RW414 – I'll put the link in my notes. Gosh, when Kurt and I looked at this module, we immediately went into dream mode. This module fits our needs to a T. It's a toyhauler with plenty of room for the bikes, the kitchen has a lot more space than our current one, the seating area is comfortable for 4 people to sit and visit, our current module, not so much. The best feature was the KING bed vs. our now cozy queen bed, but even better there was room to walk around the bed. Keeping this in perspective, we were just dreaming and we will afford a change much later down the road. We are comfortable for now. Although, I will tell you that in comparison to other models from other manufacturers, the discounts with this one was worth considering! I decided to poll this couple and find out what they most desired at an RV park. Here are their top 2 choices. Pool was their number 1 and number 2 was to have plenty of activities and the activities did not include Pickleball. Bingo, oh I didn't mean play BINGO… I meant, see I can't find anyone that likes it. Help me out here, what's your favorite feature that you look for in an RV park? I'll give you hint what mine is as I work out of my RV – it's high speed internet with as many WIFI connections that I can get. Our RV has 3 TV's, 2 cell phones and 1 computer – so I need at least 6 connections! Later on I noticed an older gentleman with a Jimmie Johnson hat and shirt on, now of course, Jimmie had been my number one driver in Nascar, since 2002, he's since retired so I found it interesting that this gentleman was still representing. I approached him and Said, so how's Jimmie Johnson doing these days? He jokingly said, maam, I got this shirt at a garage sale! I really didn't follow him. We were more into drag racing. Man, I got a chuckle out of that. We learned that they were ‘good' bikers back in the 70's when biking wasn't cool. He said we didn't hang with them gangs, you know. I said, oh yes, I know all about that. They were at the show looking for their next RV. Super cool couple. Now, my favorite thing I learned at the show, may not be sexy to you, but it sure lit me up! While we were in the 2nd vendor hall, I think. We ran across CampSpot. Campspot is the software that many parks use to manage not only their camping store inventory but their RV spots. They have unique algorithms that can move your RV spot inventory around to wisely manage the inventory most efficiently! While we were in Waukee, Iowa this summer at Timberline Campground the park owner there Marta had told me about CampSpot so I actually saw a demo of it in action and I was able to bang some ideas around with Marta. So to run into them at this event, was epic! There were 2 ladies in the booth, one focused on marketing their product and the other lady was very helpful as she was on their development team. It's not that often that a company will client face a member of it's development staff, developers are usually not client facing and they do their best work when everyone else is sleeping…..so I took advantage of the opportunity and shared with her the IT specific functionlity that I would like to have at my park. I bet I pelted her with 20-30 different ideas. As expected, she'd have to take my ideas back to the development staff, but I did learn more about how their software worked and some possible work arounds that may work for the functionality that I'd need. This encounter just made my day and made me hopeful that my park design one day will become reality. That concluded our Tampa RV Super Show experience, remember if you have any great ideas you'd like to see in an RV Park, I'm your girl. Reach out to me at info@fearlessinnovator.com, I'd love to share your ideas or may be even interview you on a future show! Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer JOHN DYSON PODCAST RECOMMENDATION: HOW VOLKSWAGEN IS REINVENTING ITSELF AS AN EV COMPANY - How Volkswagen can reinvent itself as an EV company, with CEO Herbert Diess - Volkswagen is one of the two biggest carmakers in the world — there's a battle every year between VW and Toyota for the top spot; they both sell around 10 million cars a year. - Herbert oversees a huge range of familiar car brands: VW, of course, but also Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bentley, as well as Skoda and Seat in Europe. A recent management shuffle also put him directly in charge of Volkswagen's software subsidiary, which is called CARIAD, and, of course, he's in charge of VW's aggressive efforts to electrify its lineup and shift all its cars to being EVs. - Herbert and I talked about all of that and the overall transition to EVs, including VW's new EV microbus, which is very cool. We also talked about how a company like Volkswagen can move as quickly as smaller competitors like Tesla. Ford invested $500 million in Rivian in 2019 -- building that to $1.2 billion in the following years -- and has a total stake of around 12% in the Irvine, California-based EV group. The recalled Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV are currently assembled there, but production is down through February as GM prioritizes battery module replacements for the recalled Bolts. - How much GM will save from the abatement is not yet known - GM is also looking to invest billions in Delta Township near Lansing for a battery cell manufacturing plant it's proposing to build there with battery partner LG Energy Solution. GM also applied to receive local and state tax breaks for that project. The vehicle was owned by a longtime car enthusiast who currently owns a Tesla Model S Plaid, a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, and several other supercars. In a walkthrough of the vehicle, the Lucid owner highlighted several of the features he is fond of in the Air, such as its tactile controls, as well as some things he wishes were improved, such as its software and audio system. - With Launch Mode enabled, the Air attacked the quarter-mile without hesitation. Ultimately, the first test of the Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance showed that the vehicle showcased a 0-60 mph time of 2.93 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.21 seconds. The vehicle's trap speed was also very impressive at 143.37 mph. - In its third test, for example, the all-electric luxury sedan's 0-60 mph dropped to 2.88 seconds, which is closer to the 2.5 seconds estimated by Lucid. The new SC is set to make its formal debut at the opening round of the Formula E season later this month in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. - “Formula E is delighted the Porsche Taycan Turbo S will serve as the championship's Safety Car from Season 8,” says Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E. “The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the pinnacle of high performance electrified vehicles and will light up Formula E city racetracks around the world.” - Porsche Taycan SCs are fitted with highly visible light bars and the necessary toggles and switches in the cabin to operate them properly. - Mechanically, however, the Formula E Porsche Taycan seems to be almost stock. Using a Ford Transit van as the basis of the concept, Winnebago and its powertrain partner, Lightning eMotors, swapped in an an electric motor and an 86.0-kWh battery pack. - While Winnebago did not release an estimated horsepower rating for the e-RV camper van concept, it did say that estimated driving range would be 125 miles per charge, which is significantly shorter than today's EV passenger vehicles. But the Winnebago has a bed, a kitchenette, and wet bath with a shower, all home-style amenities you won't find in a Tesla. - For right now, the e-RV is merely a concept and Winnebago says that as battery technology evolves there's a potential for additional range. The e-RV concept has an onboard charger that is capable of juicing the battery at an owner's home, at public high-speed charging ports, or while plugged into shore power at a campground. According to Winnebago, the e-RV can charge up in about 45 minutes using a high-speed public charging station. Los Angeles County prosecutors filed the charges in October, but they came to light only last week. - The criminal charges aren't the first involving an automated driving system, but they are the first to involve a widely used driver technology. - In the Tesla crash, police said a Model S was moving at a high speed when it left a freeway and ran a red light in the Los Angeles suburb of Gardena and struck a Honda Civic - NHTSA added that all state laws hold human drivers responsible for operation of their vehicles. Though automated systems can help drivers avoid crashes, the agency said, the technology must be used responsibly. WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK We talk about the two RV shows being held this week… The Florida RV Supershow in Tampa and the big Quartzsite RV Show in Arizona. We also explain why we decided not to attend this year We share our winter campout experience up at Tahquamenon Falls in the Michigan UP this past weekend where the temperature dropped to 10 degrees We talk about Bo falling into a foot and a half of muck along a lake during a hike and why it's important to keep your eye on your pets when they are off-leash This part of the RV Podcast is brought to you by Camping World – America’s #1 RV Dealer RV NEWS OF THE WEEK Visit a national park for free Monday, Jan. 18 If you are making plans for the MLK weekend, you may want to include visiting a national park. Admission to all national parks is waived Monday, Jan. 18, as the date is one of six free days sprinkled throughout the year. The National Park Service manages 423 parks, 108 of which charge admission, some as high as $35 per vehicle. To see our favorite national parks of the West (all free to enter on Jan. 18!), click here. Tennessee state parks report record campground reservations in 2020, predict another busy year We get asked often what we think camping will look like in 2021, and one of the trends we anticipate continuing is full campgrounds. Last week Tennessee State Parks became the latest to report record camping reservations in 2020, with four months of 2020 the busiest the state system ever recorded. The trend is fueled by people wanting to vacation and get away, and turning to camping as a safer way to do that during a pandemic. To see a story we researched on this and other predictions for camping in 2021, click here. Five campgrounds at Grand Teton National Park move to reservation system Jan. 26 Grand Teton National Park will be moving more of its camping sites to a reservation system later this month. Beginning Jan. 26, five of the parks campgrounds that were on a first-come-first-serve system can be booked ahead. Officials said this will reduce public crowding, and will enable people to better plan ahead. For more details click here. Man who used torch to break locks on campground deposit tubes in Colorado BLM campgrounds sentenced A Colorado man who allegedly used a blowtorch to steal cash locked up for campsite use on government land was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for damaging government property. The man apparently went to campgrounds managed by the Bureau of Land Management at night, used a blowtorch to bust open the tubes where campers leave deposits for campsite use, covering the light of the torch with a tarp. He is charged with causing $39,000 in damage to government property. Campgrounds in some CA national forests to remain closed through Jan. 29 as part of COVID-19 prevention effort The USDA Forest Service extended the campground closures at 12 national forests in California through Jan. 29. The campground closures are part of a coordinated response to stopping the spread of COVID-19. The California governor is urging people to stay home, and the campground closure is part of that effort. The national forests are open for day use, but like everything these days, always check before heading out. After a year of RV show cancellations because of COVID, the RV Show season is set to roar back next month with the 2021 Florida RV Supershow in Tampa Jan. 13-17. Here's what to expect: Because the Florida RV Supershow is mostly outside, organizers say they are confident that social distancing, wearing masks inside the RV, limits of how many people can be in an RV at one time, along with frequent sanitization can make for a safe show. On the RV Podcast Interview f the week, we learn what to expect. Plus we have lots of RV News this week, your questions and feedback about the RV Lifestyle and a great off the beaten path report from the Burketts. All that is waiting for you in Episode 324 of the RV Podcast! You can listen to the podcast in the player below. But in just a few weeks, the show season starts again with the 2021 Florida RV Supershow, to run January 13-17 at the Tampa Fairgrounds in Tampa, FL. Dave Kelly, of the 2021 Florida RV Supershow Our guest this week is Dave Kelly, the Executive Director of the Florida RV Trade Association, which puts on the annual show, always one of the largest, and as you;ll hear from Dave, probably the largest RV show in the nation. Here's a transcript of our interview about the 2021 Florida RV Supershow: Mike Wendland: Joining us right now to talk about the big show, I feel like Ed Sullivan, the Big Show, is Dave Kelly from the Tampa RV Super Show. How you doing, Dave? Dave Kelly: Thanks. Yeah, thanks for having me. Great. We're doing wonderful down here. Mike Wendland: Well, we are...it certainly has been a year. In fact, it was almost a year ago, that was really the last of the big shows and wow. What a show last year was. So I am delighted that you guys are on, and hopefully this sets the stage for us out of the funk that 2020 was. Tell us about the show, the dates, what people need to know in terms of being careful about social distance stuff, all that. What do we need to know about this year's, this 2021 big super show in Tampa again? Here's a video of what the 2020 Florida RV Supershow was like, just before COVOD forced the cancellations of the rest of the RV Show Season Dave Kelly: Well, we open on Wednesday the 13th of January, and we run through the 17th. $12 for adults. We've extended our senior days to Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this year. $2 off for seniors any of those days and kids under 16 free. So it's a great family way to spend the day with the family out at the show. We will be doing temperature checking and a mask by Hillsborough County ordinance would be required in the buildings and when you're inside the RV. We're going to try to make it as unobtrusive as possible for everyone to have a good time. As you know, the majority of the show is outdoors and from what we're reading, the outdoors is a fairly safe place to be. So, we're feeling uncomfortable we can provide a safe atmosphere for the show. Mike Wendland: Give us a sense of the size of this year's show. I know not all the folks that exhibited last year will be there this year,
They may be selling RVs at a record pace, but there are lots of lingering Pandemic Problems for the RV Industry The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc across all aspects of the economy including the RV Industry. The show, one of the largest in the nation, will happen in person (vs. virtual) on the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa Jan. 13-17. Show organizers say they will do everything possible to provide a clean and safe environment for exhibitors and attendees. Some Michigan legislators want to petition National Park Service for limited moose hunt on Isle Royale Some Michigan legislators believe the answer to Isle Royale National Park's ever-growing moose population is a limited moose hunt. The National Park Service is in the process of transferring 30 wolves to the island to bring balance to the rising number of moose there, which are damaging the island's eco-system. Those pro-hunt legislators believe hunting permits could bring new revenue to the park and help with a moose overpopulation. Others caution the wolf relocation plan is just underway, and not enough time has passed to see what difference the wolves are making. White Sands, America's newest national park,

Imagine that you are about to retire. In the driveway, is a brand-new RV. Your dream machine. The Florida sun is shining, and life looks good…until you look out over the Gulf of Mexico to see a hurricane named Michael barreling down towards you. That’s what happened to a couple we met this week, who shared their harrowing story of what happens when a hurricane hits …how you – and your RV - need to be prepared, from having enough RV insurance, food and off-grid battery power in the RV. You will not want to miss the interview of the week, coming up in a bit. We also have lots of RV news this week, answer your RV Lifestyle questions about alternate energy for the RV and four-season RVs ready for cold weather camping and we have a great off-the-beaten path report from our friends the Burketts. But first, my lifelong traveling companion and my bride…Jennifer. Show Notes for Episode #226 Jan. 23, 2019 of The RV Podcast WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK Mike and Jennifer doing a Live stream on YouTube from the Tampa RV Supershow JENNIFER We've been attending the annual Florida RV Supershow for the past four days and it's good to be sitting! We put on a lot of miles shooting video on the new models and RV Lifestyle accessories we've seen down here. MIKE It seems like we walked pretty much every inch of the 26 -acre display area - several times - each day! There was so much to see with more than 1,500 RVs on display and 400 vendors showing off their RV products and services. JENNIFER Look for a full video on all the cool stuff this Thursday on our RV Lifestyle YouTube Channel at https://youtube.com/rvlifestyle And please, if you have not done so, subscribe to our channel there so you can be notified of new videos as we publish them. MIKE We also met dozens and dozens of fans and followers. It was truly humbling to shake so many hands and get so many hugs. We leave the show on an emotional high from all the encouragement and kind words. Thank you to all for taking the time to introduce yourself to us! And we’re off traveling again. By popular demand. We asked you on a recent YouTube live stream what kind of stories you’d like us to focus on besides our regular travel and trip reports and there was an overwhelming response to do more RV reviews and factory tours. So that’s what we plan to do over the next few weeks, visit various RV factories and suppliers and do a video report on how they build RVs, what new gadgets and innovations they have, who are the people building today’s RVs and what are the exciting things they are seeing for the future. So we’re off tomorrow to shoot our first one this week. We have another scheduled next week and you’ll be seeing them all soon on our YouTube RV Lifestyle Channel – https://youtbe.com/rvlifestyle We should note there was a definite downer part to this past weekend. Several very disturbing stories broke about a shakeup and serious allegations of financial irregularities surrounding the Erwin Hymer Group of North America, the parent corporation that owns Roadtrek Motorhomes. Many of you know that Jennifer and I have been on-the-road ambassadors for Roadtrek and the company has been one of our sponsors. We know many of the people who work there and our hearts go out to them in this time of uncertainty. Most of the stories we've seen come from unnamed sources and, as we write this newsletter, the company has not issued any comments at all. I’ve written all I know on the RV Lifestyle blog and if you need a background on it… check there. RV LIFESTYLE NEWS OF THE WEEK MIKE Several unique Florida state parks still closed five months after Hurricane Michael hit An interesting story ran last week out of Florida, highlighting the lingering damage Hurricane Michael did to Florida's state parks with several remaining closed - some five months after the Category 4 hurricane hit. Pat Donovan and Aaron Jacobson were live from the Florida RV Supershow on Thursday for a very fun show. The boys talked some Lightning hockey with Brian Engblom. They previewed championship weekend in the NFL with Pat Kirwan. We also had the pleasure of hearing Paulie Malignaggi absolutely go off on Conor McGregor. List time also was back with the top 5 best Bruces.
The RV Lifestyle means different things to different people. This week, we’ll hear from a collection of RVers we just met at the ongoing California RV Show about the many different ways they use and enjoy their RVs and what part of the lifestyle they enjoy the most. Plus lots of RV News, RV Tips and a great off the beaten path report. Show Notes for Episode #213 Oct. 19, 2018 of Roadtreking - The RV Podcast WHAT MIKE AND JENNIFER ARE UP TO THIS WEEK MIKE We've been on the west coast the past few days meeting folks and hanging out at the huge California RV Show in Pomona. It’s our first time attending this annual fall show, which in every way rivals the September RV Show in Hershey and the January Tampa, Florida RV Supershow in size and vendors. It’s hard to say which is the biggest but lets just say you can walk a lot of miles at Pomona and still not see everything! JENNIFER. This is the third RV show we’ve attended in as many weeks. First was Hershey, then the RV Open House in Elkhart and now the California Show. If we had to take our impressions on all three of these shows and identify the one or two big trends we saw, we’d have to say all the industry momentum seems to be focused these days on boondocking and smaller RVs like teardrops and Class B campervans. The industry’s clear emphasis is on drawing younger people into the RV Lifestyle and they are trying to do that with smaller more efficient units that are able to do off grid and sometimes off road camping. MIKE I agree with that assessment. I think the question we were asked more than any other one over the weekend had to do with boondocking. And not necessarily by young people. Campers of all sorts, especially babyboomers expressed frustration over trying to book space in commercial campgrounds and state parks. So many RVs have been sold in recent years and there are so many new RVers out there that tit is getting harder and harder to book a spot at a commercial or state park type campground without making reservations long in advance. So RVers are increasingly looking towards boondocking. Which is just why we wrote our new book, the Beginner's Guide to Boondocking . Sales have been amazing, and we so appreciate the kind words we heard from many at the show who have already read it. But in three days of doing meet and greets out there, we heard so many people talk about wanting to give boondocking a try. We were also asked a lot where Bo was and we explained that we left him back home because we had to fly out to California because there just was not enough time for us to drive in our RV between all the shows we had to attend and our next event, which gets underway tomorrow. That event is another one of our Roadtreking gatherings, the eighth of the year. It’s on the prairie in the Flinthills region of Kansas on the Flying W Ranch. The Flying W is a working cattle ranch and we will be camped there in our RVs and participating in all sorts of things, including a longhorn cattle drive, a photography tour and something I am really looking forward to, a night star gazing party with an astronomer. It should be an awesome time. JENNIFER As this podcast is being released the Panhandle region of Florida is being affected by Hurricane Michael. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the affected areas. This looks like a major storm and it hits home for us…literally. As many of you know we have a condo on Okaloosa Island near Destin which is right in the thick of it all. We have been relying on friends, including Roadtrekers Les and Kathy Shanteau, who we want to give a big shout out to. They live in the area and have helped us move a car that we keep down there to higher ground. Other friends have moved our patio furniture indoors, too. But hurricanes are scary things and we’re hoping and praying this one is not as bad as they say. MIKE Along those lines I have received a news release from the Florida Campground Association.

We share our very positive experience with the place voted the Best Hospital in America. The bitter cold has finally broken but for more than 10 days, nighttime temperatures were well below zero F in many parts of North America. Even parts of Florida saw snow! We talk about problems that can arise if you leave your sticks and bricks house unattended while on an RV trip and the temperatures drop so low. For decades, driver's ed teachers recommended that students place their hands at the ten o'clock and two o'clock positions, which were assumed to be the gold standard for leverage, comfort and control. But as a listener named Tom pointed out in an email he sent to us recently, that's not true anymore, due to new research in ergonomics, and new technology in steering wheels. The correct way to place your hands on the steering wheel Placing the hands at nine and three—"parallel position," it's called—is now recommended by AAA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and other authorities. This is especially important for unsure drivers, who often get into accidents by oversteering. Parallel position lowers the body's center of gravity, and tends to allow smaller and more accurate steering corrections. But airbags are an even bigger issue. Many of us learned how to handle a steering wheel in an age when there wasn't a super-heated gas ready to explode right into our head and hands in case of impact. The old ten-and-two position puts the hands closer together, and has led to many cases of fractures and serious injuries when airbags deploy. Parallel position keeps your hands farther from the point of airbag impact. Also, to better protect your thumbs in case of a collision, rest them on the wheel itself rather than hooking them around its interior edge. And more driving myth buster: Thanks to airbags, that crossover "hand-over-hand" way that old-timers were taught to make sharp turns is now out of date as well, say many insurers and driving instructors. Crossing your arms can knock your other hand off the wheel, or seriously injure you when airbags pop. Here's a link to a detailed article in this - https://www.woot.com/blog/post/the-debunker-should-your-hands-be-at-ten-and-two-on-the-steering-wheel Meanwhile… be sure to send me your tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle.
