This week on the Desk of Ladyada it's been a prototyping bonanza with a lot of work on testers and new designs. First up we wanted to wrap the tester for the CH9102F but found that part of our test is to check the DTR/DTS RTS/CTS pains and the Linux kernel driver for the CH343 family did not have CTS working! Thankfully we found an out-of-tree driver https://github.com/SoldierJazz/ch343ser_linux.git that does the job and allows us to perform the test procedure. Next up we put together prototypes for the EZ-Link ESP32 and tried out some code, like the CH9102F, there were some flow control issues to work out in the BT SPP stack but it works! Finally we test out the latest CircuitPython PicoW WiFi stack work, where there is slow-n-steady progress. The Great Search - ESP32 modules in all Shapes and Sizes! https://www.digikey.com/short/dpd0wdnq This week's great search is a two-fer as we look for small classic ESP32 modules! Traditionally we've used the big ESP32-WROOM https://www.digikey.com/short/fftf34vt such as seen in the HUZZAH Feather https://www.adafruit.com/product/3405 , OR we've used the u-blox NINA W10 https://www.digikey.com/short/n2d0cwn5 such as on the Airlift Bitsy https://www.adafruit.com/product/4363 . We just got notice that the NINA is Last Time Buy, so it's time to find a replacement for AirLift. Likewise, we designed the EZ-Link with ESP32 Pico Modules https://www.digikey.com/short/m853jv84 but perhaps it's a little overkill since we don't need so much Flash and PSRAM? Let's use Digi-Key plus the Espressif part selector https://products.espressif.com/ to find some good alternatives. Imagine two independent systems communicating with each other. One producing data and the other consuming it. There must be some place where data is buffered. Just in case the producer generated some data but the consumer is currently busy. For example, incoming requests, messages, packets - must wait. Sooner or later, this buffer overflows and either starts dropping data or crashes altogether. Moreover, large buffers imply growing latency between production and consumption. The consumer is perceived less responsive because data waited for a long time in queue. Especially when nothing is prioritized, so first come, first served. Also known as FIFO, first in, first out. > “I think DAOs are attempts at more distributed than centralized organizations. And we need to create a language that can conceive of a spectrum. And we need to create sort of distribution KPIs or distribution perception indexes.” The last episode of Season 1 is here, and in the Christmas spirit, it brings a gift with it. DAOcast is opening itself up to co-creation. If you're interested, listen to this episode to understand the full context and get in touch ;) As a painting teacher, facilitator, and "Emotional translator of social realities", Felipe Duarte brought a lot to the mosaic of perspectives we are building here. His past experiences in collaborative processes - which included energizing one of first open houses of Brazil - have a lot to teach anyone interested in participating in a DAO experiment. In highlighting the importance of Ontology in *co-creative* processes, we had a very fruitful conversation around nomenclature for processes and things in emerging spaces, like the DAO space. More specifically, we talked about Flow Control and Homeostasis in the context of open systems. We also talked about other qualitative characteristics of co-creation, such as "Emotional skin in the game" and "Purpose KPI". And, of course, much much more. So give this episode a listen and consider interacting with us to co-create DAOcast. This interview was recorded on October 4th, so please take that into consideration when listening to the show.

Fred Gordy is anxious to assist system integrators and facility managers with Cybersecurity issues. Please email any questions that you might have for Fred at controltrends@gmail.com. Carl Johnsen, and His Amazing 42 Year Career with Honeywell — A Tribute. ControlTrends had a chance to spend some time with one of the great controls people in the HVAC and Building Automation Controls Industry. Carl Johnsen’s career with Honeywell spans 42 years, and it was an absolute delight to interview Carl at the 2015 AHR show in Chicago. From his early days selling and supporting pneumatic controls, to the advent of DDC controls, on to the fully integrated building automation control systems of today, Carl Johnsen met the challenges of changing technology with determined optimism and success. Unboxing the Sierra Monitor Dual Port BACnet Router. We had the privilege to review Sierra Monitor’s BTL Certified BACnet Router – the protocol router spearheading the theme of ease-of-use. We’re sure system integrators love saving time and costs, right? Sierra Monitor introduced this great product back in January, and since then, it has gained a lot of traction in the building automation industry. It really is easy to use, with great features like DeviceFind, their unique BACnet device discovery feature, and two RS-485 ports for connecting up to 64 devices without the use of additional line drivers. Honeywell’s Security Controller Exchange Program. The SEC-H-201/U WEBs-AX Security controller was introduced in 2007. At the time, this platform was a good product on which to deliver the original stand-alone Web-Based security application. However, over time the security application has grown in both features and complexity and the SEC-H-201/U is no longer suitable to run the latest WEBs-AX Enterprise Security application. An exchange program has been created to allow customers that purchased an SEC-H-201/U security controller the opportunity to exchange them for an SEC-H-602 security controller at a reduced price vs. purchasing a new SEC-H-602 security controller. Marc Petock’s “Cybersecurity and the Board Room.” Cybersecurity has taken a pole position at ControlTrends and we are grateful to the important content and contributions being provided by HVAC and BAS Cybersecurity professionals. Our industry has a long, long way to go to meet the increasing challenges of Cybersecurity, but we’re getting on track with the guidance we receive from these generous professionals sharing their expertise. Marc Petock’s post contains two very important links that bring some of the world of Cybersecurity to a needy industry’s doorstep, and terms like “Duty of Care” and a CEO’s “Tone at the Top” — as well as equations like Risk = Threat X Vulnerability X Impact, and Risk = Probability X Impact, will become increasing familiar and used in our industry — in the near future. Lynxspring Go Further: Important NTCP Training Update, Niagara 4 Bridge Course Update. Training and knowledge exchange is very important at Lynxspring. Achieving adequate gas exchange whilst minimising ventilator induced lung inury is a major challenge in intensive care. The world of ICU ventilation is rich with novel proprietary modes but so far, none have proven an outcome benefit in ARDS. Whilst the differences between various modes are often subtle, most focus on modifying the inspiratory phase of the respiratory cycle, whilst maintaining a constant level of end-expiratory pressure. A group from the Division of Experimental Anaesthesiology at University Medical Centre in Freiburg have recently customised a standard ventilator to control the expiratory phase in a volume controlled mode. Dr Stefan Schumann, the biomedical engineer on the project, talks to us about the physiological rationale for flow-controlled expiration and in simple terms, how they were able to achieve it. Dr Schumann then goes on to describe their experiments in a porcine lung injury model and the encouraging results produced by this nascent technology.
