Back in the day, websites were begging for visitors. Not anymore.
For this episode of the SUX Podcast we were joined by Hannah Smith, who is the Director of Operations of the Green Web Foundation. We spoke about how to make the web fossil free until 2030, if we are on track here and how Designers, Developers and all professions need to join to work towards this goal. But we also spoke about the role of AI in all this and how our use of tech in the northern/western world creates a lot of injustice because of our massive overconsumption of energy. And we dived into AI and the problems that come with it - ecologically as well as socially. We spoke about the need of Narrative shifts and what every one of us can do about it and we discussed we not only need to learn but also unlearn frequently. Like Thorsten, Hannah is loving the outdoors and is trying to do all her travels by train, so we also spoke a little bit about the greatest train travels and our longest trips. And Hannah started a new tradition on the podcast by beginning to ask questions to Thorsten on her own. So, if you want to here more about how to get to a fossil free internet, about the role of AI in it and why we need to question it more, but also about beautiful train trips and what Hannah does to re-energize in bad moments, do not hesitate to tune in to this episode of the SUX Podcast. On Thursday THIS WEEK, the organisation 'Friends of a Free Internet' launched what it calls the 'Stop Thief campaign' demanding the major cell phone networks end profiteering and meet their commitments to expand affordable internet access to everyone in South Africa. The campaigners called on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom to stop the digital divide which they say is amplifying and deepening South Africa's inequality as a few enjoy high-speed world-class fibre internet connections while the marginalised majority are either excluded from network access completely or remain condemned to the slow and over-priced prepaid mobile connections. Sebenzile Nkambule spoke to Friends of a Free Internet spokesperson, Tshiamo Malatji

(Sacred Cow arrived, midway through it) I'll be 70 in 6 months and am wanting to learn the best approach to making changes in my gut health via nutrition that isn't bullshit-based (like fasting), strength training to build muscle and strengthen my bones. Oh, I'm overweight as well, have some arthritis, sciatica and other run-of-mill age related breakdowns. Where do I start with strength training? I hesitate going to gyms and trying to find a personal trainer who I can trust. The rest of my diet is mostly unchanged with a lot of meat, fish, and eggs. There are studies saying the phytoestrogens in tofu lowers testosterone, but there are also some saying it has no effect. I'm not sure what to believe. How much would you avoid eating it, if at all? Thank you! Body Composition Nicolas writes: Hi Robb, I met you in person at my CrossFit cert. in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on September 14th, 2008 when I was 29 years old. We talked about how may eating habits were ok and suggested I follow the CrossFit meal plan. It worked well for me up until 2017(38 yo). I'm turning 43 now and I have started to gain unwanted weight. I have slowed down on CrossFit training due to injuries but still continue to train athletically 3 days a week (2 lifting days- 1 swimming/cycling day) and still eat relatively clean however, being Italian I like my pasta and bread, especially when I visit my parents. Should I still be following the crossfit meal plan? How do I get my body back to a relatively lean state without training so hard? Should Intermittent fasting be something I should start doing? @Mister Metokur , aka "Jim", is a content creator with a gift for exploring (and savagely mocking) niche internet subcultures. In the summer of 2014, under the pseudonym "The Internet Aristocrat", Metokur posted a video called "Quinnspiracy Theory" that went viral and kicked off a strange and convoluted controversy that came to be known as #GamerGate. Living at the nexus of popular entertainment, internet culture, journalistic ethics, and "Progressive" Identity Politics, the kerfuffle ended up becoming a national story, still referenced by journalists to this day (nearly a decade later), and served as a preview of the Culture Wars that seem so pervasive now.FOLLOW METOKUR ON TWITTER:https://www.twitter.com/QuarantinedCoofHERE'S HIS YOUTUBE CHANNEL:https://www.youtube.com/c/MisterMetokurFOLLOW ME ON TWITTER: https://www.twitter.com/cliftonaduncan SUBSCRIBE TO MY SUBSTACK: https://cliftonduncan.substack.com MY IMDB PAGE:https://www.imdb.me/cliftonduncan(MOST OF) MY THEATRICAL CREDITS:https://www.abouttheartists.com/artists/265366-clifton-alphonzo-duncanIntro/Outro: https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/stJzyKNNgz/SUPPORT THIS PODCAST BY BUYING SOME DELICIOUS COFFEE FROM OUR FIRST SPONSOR, TWIN ENGINE COFFEE:https://www.twinenginecoffee.com/CliftonDuncanTIME STAMPS:0:01:45 -- Introductory Remarks.0:04:23 -- Jim's Origin Story, and Olden Days of a Free Internet.0:14:42 -- "Intersectional" Ideological Infiltration. 0:19:27 -- WTF was #GamerGate?0:33:33 -- "Progressive" Authoritarian Hypocrites.0:43:56 -- The Importance of Being Anonymous.1:04:08 -- An Off-White Pill.
In our May's episode, we went to Berlin and meet Chris Adams, an "environmentally focussed tech generalist" as he likes to describe himself. From the early days of Rail Europe to the Green Web Foundation of which he is the executive director, Chris has always been passionate about environmental topics. In the Digital Sustainability field, Chris is such an old-timer that we decided to split our interview in two parts! In this first part, after taking the time to know Chris a bit better and how he burnt 20M$ in VC, we discussed at length about Green Hosting and Cloud Sustainability. And we deep dived in a step by step approach to green ops greatly helped by the questions coming from the Tech community following Green I/O. A warm thank you to them.
