Omar Moore poses several questions in this episode: is there something troubling about how we as a society address or deal (or don't) with grief, privacy, social media and mental health? Each of these aspects intersect, especially when people take to social media to communicate the loss of a loved one. Are people comfortable or uncomfortable with such expressions? How does social media affect your privacy and the privacy of grief, if at all? How do the mental health dimensions implicate each of these entities? An exploration and questions asked, in this episode. January 2, 2021. On Christmas Eve Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Boris Johnson, prime minister of the United Kingdom, announced a Brexit Deal. What are the precise details? There are 500 pages of details we haven't seen yet. On Wednesday, December 30 the U.K. Parliament is set to vote on the deal that will finally see the U.K. leave the European Union after four and a half years of negotiations and setbacks. The U.K. first entered the Common Market (that was what the EU was called then) in 1973. And on January 1, 2021 the U.K. is set to actually leave the European Union and come out of the single market, where 450 million citizens have been part of cooperative work and trade for nearly 50 years. Will Members of Parliament in Westminster get to read the fine print before they vote on Wednesday? How about the rest of us? Is this all just another conning of the English public by the right-wing press? Or is Brexit actually not going to be as bad as many are forecasting? Omar Moore weighs in. December 26, 2020. December 12 is a significant and oft-infamous date in history. In 1941 it was infamous because of Hitler's vile, terrifying and genocidal pronouncements against Jewish people. Omar Moore and racial justice attorney Judith Browne Dianis, executive director of The Advancement Project, converse about Republican attacks on Black people voting. The most recent example of Republican Party attacks on democracy and the democratic process were evident on Tuesday with the racist shenanigans of two white GOP officials in predominantly Black cities (Detroit) of Wayne County, Michigan. After four hours of protest and uproar against the GOP officials, who refused to certify the results of a fraud-free vote, the two officials reversed their vote and the four-member Wayne County elections board re-voted unanimously to certify the results in Detroit and in turn the county overall. Also: Conversation about The Advancement Project and the work the organization does, and the importance of staying engaged in the political process and activism now that the 2020 U.S. general election is over. Mike & Jay open the show with a discussion of the recent ruling mandating that the Trump administration restart the DACA program. While the Supreme Court has ruled on DACA, it hasn't ruled on the merits of the case - only on the Trump administration's method of ending it. Both Mike & Jay think that a legislative fix would be preferable to any executive action and see DACA as executive overreach. Next is a look at the ongoing COVID stimulus talks. Jay believes there's a real possibility of a deal largely along Republican lines, whereas Mike feels that Democrats have compromised more than Republicans and that we might not see a major relief package until after Joe Biden becomes president. After that they turn to President Trump's continuing election challenges and how lucrative they've been for his post-presidency political action committee. The president's claims of massive election fraud have complicated things for Republicans in the Georgia US Senate runoff elections, though Jay doesn't believe that calls from some Trump supporters to boycott the election will have a significant effect. Mike agrees, but points out that in a close election, even a few election boycotters might tilt the races in favor of the Democrats. They close the show with a discussion of Attorney General William Barr. Early in the week he announced that the Department of Justice had found no evidence of fraud significant enough to overturn the results of the presidential election, which President Trump vigorously disputes. Barr also named US Attorney John Durham as special counsel in the investigation of the ‘Russia conspiracy' investigators. While Mike questions the legal legitimacy of the appointment, both Jay and Mike believe the Biden administration won't make any move to dismiss the special counsel. *Mike's Weekly Recommendation* The Blues Brothers ( https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/the-blues-brothers ) *Jay's Weekly Recommendation* The Crown ( https://www.netflix.com/title/80025678 ) (Netflix) *The Politics Guys* on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/politicsguyspage ) | Twitter ( https://twitter.com/politicsguys ) Mike's Article Recommendations ( https://flipboard.com/@mikebara/mike-s-recommendations-g6hshvmmz?from=share&utm_medium=curator_share&utm_source=flipboard ) Politics Makes Me Sick ( https://politicsmakesmesick.com/ ) (Mike's Other Podcast) *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
