In this episode of The Unlimited Podcast, our Lessons with Legends series continues as we welcome Brian's former boss, Gerald Sheff, Co-Founder of Gluskin Sheff + Associates Inc., once one of Canada's pre-eminent wealth management firms. This is a special episode highlighting Gerry's "straight-talking" ways as he recounts:His path to becoming an architect: "I didn't know anything about architecture. I thought, well, it's something I don't know anything about. So I didn't know, I didn't want to be one. So I thought, well, maybe I'll become one."His early working years: "...they thought I knew something. And I didn't tell them I didn't."His first thoughts on hearing about his eventual employer Cadillac Fairview: "I thought anybody who would call themselves 'Cadillac' is probably a Chevrolet."The story of meeting Ira Gluksin and the formative idea of Gluskin Sheff: "We decided to be a very boutique firm and to differentiate ourselves from all the vanilla money management operations that existed at the time.", andWhat he's learned to do in uncertain times: "Doing nothing is often the best thing to do". (A familiar message to those who follow Ginsler Wealth's thinking as well)....And many other insights and words of wisdom. You don't want to miss this one!Gerry Sheff graduated from the School of Architecture at McGill University in 1964, and received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1971. Following this, he joined Cadillac Developments in Toronto, which later become Cadillac Fairview, playing a number of key roles with that firm. In 1984, he left and with his partner Ira Gluskin, founded Gluskin Sheff, which went on to become one of the most successful investment firms in Canada.Timestamps0:00: Disclaimer & Intro4:20: Gerry's Architecture Degree15:17: Beginnings of Gerry & Ira24:16: Why take a different approach with Gluskin Sheff? 32:52 Gerry & Ira's changing investment philosophy40:18 The Award Winning Treehouse46:52 Gerry's Philanthropic Philosophy48:53 Upgrading Your Thinking52:05 Gerry's advice on investing in troubling times55:04 If Gerry could do anything, what would it be?56:39 Outro

David Rosenberg returns to discuss the current economic environment and how flattened yield curves are promoting liquidity issues. Credit supply has been contracting, and the velocity of money is also declining. If money velocity stabilizes were going to get a lot more inflation, and perhaps that is what gold is trying to signal. David discusses various custom indexes they have created for finding value in today's market. The Fed is not going to allow interest rates to rise, and that's why long-bonds are still somewhat attractive. He feels the next one to two years will see gold rise to around $3500. Their Gold and bond basket has done well for them this year. Real interest rates are heading negative and adjusted for inflation; we are already negative across the yield curve. The Fed plans on keeping rates low for the next three years. Money velocity will eventually come back and, along with it inflation. He expects the Fed to weaken interest rates further and expect further weakness with the US Dollar. Time Stamp References:1:05 - Comparing liquidity events.3:55 - Money velocity and the economy.7:00 - Assessing the stock market.11:15 - Custom indexes they use.16:30 - Interest rates and NIRP/ZIRP.19:00 - Fed to peg at Zero and getting yield.21:05 - Timing and price targets. Slowing Economies & Record Levels of Debt Are a Dangerous Mix

Last week’s podcast with influential and outspoken economist David Rosenberg generated a tremendous amount of traffic and comment. We are running part 2 this weekend. Rosenberg had been predicting the end of both the record-breaking U.S. recovery and bull market this year. Needless-to-say it hasn’t happened, and he is the first to admit he missed this year’s impressive run in large-cap stocks as a result. However, his recommendation to own long-term Treasury bonds has paid off. Year-to-date the 30-year has delivered about a 20% return. Rosenberg who is known for seeing emerging economic patterns before most others do, sometimes a couple of years early, is sticking to his guns in forecasting that a U.S. recession is imminent and is very concerned about the damage the record-breaking load of U.S. and global debt, what he calls “the mother of all credit bubbles on steroids” will have when it occurs. What was intended as one session with us turned into two because he had so much evidence to share about global and domestic conditions and the state of the financial markets. Last week he made his case for recession. This week his focus extends to the markets and recession resilient investments. As we mentioned last week, Rosenberg is launching his own macro research and strategy firm in January, Rosenberg Research and Associates. He explains why he decided to make that long-held dream a reality in our EXTRA feature on WEALTHTRACK.com. In the meantime, he remains as Chief Economist and Strategist at Toronto based wealth management firm, Gluskin Sheff. David Rosenberg | Betting Against the ‘Powell Put’ and the Return of the 'Risk-Off' Trade

Hidden Forces

In Episode 91 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Chief Economist and Strategist at Gluskin Sheff, David Rosenberg, about the latest Fed rate decision and his outlook for the global economy. In the overtime to this week’s episode, David provides listeners with a look into his investment strategy and how he is positioning himself and his clients for a global slowdown that he believes may already be underway. David Rosenberg and Demetri recorded this episode only hours after the FOMC concluded its two-day meeting this past Wednesday. The Federal Open Market Committee decided to keep the fed funds rate unchanged, while simultaneously signaling a strong willingness to begin easing, possibly as soon as next month. It is David Rosenberg’s conviction that the Federal Reserve has over tightened monetary policy during this cycle possibly by as many as one-hundred basis points – four rate hikes - and that Jay Powell and the board of governors at the Fed are worried that they may have precipitated the bursting of another bubble. This time, however, the bubble isn’t in housing or consumer credit. The bubble in 2019 is in the corporate bond market where multinational corporations have feasted on the issuance of trillions of dollars of new debt used to finance mergers, acquisitions, and share buybacks, while simultaneously cutting back on the capital investment needed to grow their businesses and service their debts long-term. The last ten years have been a great time for stocks, fueled by a bonanza of free money and an implicit guarantee by the Fed to support asset prices at all costs. But the question has always lingered, “What will happen as the Fed continues to raise rates, normalize its balance sheet and tighten monetary policy?” Is this a new financial paradigm where fundamentals no longer matter and perpetual liquidity is the name of the game or does the global economy’s increased reliance on debt financing in order to drive earnings and levitate asset prices remain as unsustainable today as it has been in any prior historical period? Is this time truly different? As always, subscribers to our Hidden Forces Patreon page can access the overtime to this week’s episode, which includes a discussion about how David is positioning himself and his clients for the likelihood of a recession and return to bear market territory for stocks and commodities. We discuss the US dollar, precious metals, treasuries, currencies, as well as certain defensive stocks that David believes are likely to outperform the overall market in a downturn.
