Sadie Laflamme-Snow shot out the gate and into Hollywood in a big way. Just a couple of years after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada, Laflamme-Snow scored a lead role in a Hallmark series opposite two industry heavyweights, Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh. Since premiering in January 2023, The Way Home has amassed an adoring fanbase that spans generations, and is credited with opening many minds to Hallmark content. Laflamme-Snow plays Alice, a teenager whose parents are on the cusp of divorce. Even though her mother, Kat (Leigh), is estranged from her mother, Del (MacDowell), they move back into her childhood home together, a house in a small farm town called Port Haven. While exploring the property, Alice makes a game-changing discovery. By jumping into a pond in the woods, Alice can time travel. But, Alice isn't in control of where (when) she goes. That's up to the pond, and it opts to send her back to 1999, the year that drastically changed Kat and Del's lives and their connection to one another. While celebrating The Way Home's Season 2 run on Hallmark Channel, Laflamme-Snow took the time to join me for a Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party conversation to recap how she scored such a wonderful opportunity so soon after graduation, to dig into Alice's evolution on the show thus far, and to tease some challenges the character could face in the second half of Season 2. Anthony Meindl is an acting coach and has published several books about acting, such as Book The F*cking Job and his latest, Unstuck. Anthony is also the host of a podcast for actors, “In The Moment”, and there is a reason he calls it that. Throughout our conversation that was a phrase that came up again and again: actors have to be in the moment, they have to live in the moment. And as actors, we know full well that means we have to listen, truly listen. Anthony will tell you, “If you're not listening to your partner then you're never going to act.” But he goes on to explain that the listening isn't the hard part. All of us can do that. He says, “the listening opens up the feelings and the expressing of those feelings is hard.” That, he says, takes courage, takes bravery, and it takes choosing yourself. Anthony Meindl is an award-winning director, writer, actor, acting coach, entrepreneur, author and inspirational speaker.  As an acting teacher, he's known for revolutionizing a more modern understanding of acting training. He founded Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop in 1997 and has schools in 10 cities around the world: Los Angeles, New York, London, Vancouver, Toronto, Atlanta, Sydney, Chicago, Copenhagen and Cape Town.   He has been the guest acting teacher for directing at David Lynch's Master of Filmmaking Program, and has guest lectured at the prestigious Moscow Arts Theatre, The National Theatre School of Ireland, The Actors Centre London, and many more. Today on Too Opinionated we talk with actor William Davis! Acclaimed award-winning actor William B. Davis, best known as the Cigarette Smoking Man on TV's The X-Files, is pleased to announce that his second book ‘On Acting …and life will be released on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. With over 135 IMDb credits and not one to slow down, William's current roles include the villain David Choak in Upload now airing on Amazon. He can also be seen in the upcoming Netflix TV series from Mike Flanagan entitled The Midnight Club. Dozens of books on acting exist, but none of them are quite like this. Part memoir and part master class, modelled after Stephen King's bestseller, On Writing, the book is divided into two parts. Part one takes readers on a seventy-year journey that begins with William B. Davis, at age twelve, riding his bicycle through the streets of Toronto to his first acting classes, and eventually leads to him starring in the long-running television series, The X-Files, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. From a summer theatre in Ontario to the National Theatre of Great Britain to the National Theatre School of Canada to the William Davis Centre for Actors' Study in Vancouver, few have travelled such a colorful journey. Along the way, Davis met all sorts of familiar faces, including Donald Sutherland, Brian Cox, Albert Finney, Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, David Duchovny, and Gillian Anderson, among others. Although there is a lot about acting in part one, the heart of the book for an aspiring or working actor is in part two. What has Davis learned in seventy years of working both in the theatre and in film and television? A lot, as you will see. Davis's grasp of the art of acting is vast and practical. And in some ways, original. In his final chapter, Davis explores the underlying philosophy of acting and actor-training and argues for bringing the work into the twenty-first century. A comedy infused with Bollywood elements, An IMM-Permanent Resident is a hilarious take on the mundane and tiresome bureaucracy of the Canadian Immigration process, as experienced by playwrights and real-life couple, Himanshu and Neha. The play explores the irreverent journey to obtain Neha's PR status, including the couple's trials and tribulations as they put their hopes and dreams on pause (indefinitely). Through wit and creative banter, this fast-paced roller coaster transports us between Mumbai and Toronto, as Neha and Himanshu navigate the immigration system and ask themselves – is love worth it all? www.nautankibazaar.ca Tickets: whynot.theatre/work/immpermanentresident Himanshu Sitlani is a thespian, originally hailing from Mumbai. In about 2012, I attended my first VO conference in Toronto. I decided to attend after I had a coaching intensive with superstar puppeteer & actor John Tartaglia in NYC. Long story short, I wanted to see if I could pursue my dream of being on “Sesame Street” -and I thought John could possibly help. It was a great session, but about an hour into it, I realized that puppeteering is a skillset that takes a lot of time and training and that it might already be too late in my life to learn and master it. So, John suggested that I stick to VO and referred me to Sunday Muse – who just happens to be my special guest today!! I had the chance to meet Sunday at that first VO conference I ever attended in Toronto because she was a guest speaker! Shortly after that, I took some animation VO coaching sessions with her and the rest is history!!Sunday Muse is the Founder/Creative Manager & Inspiratrice of Great Big Voices. Marc was in two improve/sketch comedy troupes in LA with a name you might recognize, Kristin Wiig. He is also a standup comic. Pascal studied improv as part of his training at the National Theatre School of Canada. Listen as they discuss the practical applications of improv in the qualitative process including role-playing in workshops, reliving experiences with a product or brand, and in ideation. You will walk away with the knowledge that at the heart of improv is the willingness to embrace things that many of us find discomforting including making mistakes, taking risks, and opening oneself up to vulnerability; kind of sounds like what we do as moderators! Also, consider that great qualitative researchers are those who are full of wonder, have a passion for following their noses, and generally enjoy pursuing some kind of truth. These same characteristics are also true of successful improvisers. As such, the idea of a marriage between improv and qualitative marketing research may not sound so strange after all.

At the National Drama Centre in Montreuil, a suburb east of Paris, director Mathieu Bauer's double-bill Nuit Américaine adapts two US movies for the stage. Bauer says it's like "diving into the history of cinema and of the US" at the same time. Click on the arrow in the top right-hand of the photo to listen to the RFI English Culture in France broadcast on 17 October 2018, and hear actors Clément Barthelet and Rémi Fortin talk about their experiences in the plays. Plays and literature are more often adapted to the screen rather than vice versa. French director Mathieu Bauer thinks differently. He draws all the elements of stage, not least of all illusion, to pull off an entertaining and thought-provoking double-bill. He began with Samuel Fuller's 1963 Shock Corridor, set in a mental hospital, as a project for the students of the National Theatre School in Strasbourg (TNS) and which has matured naturally over the past three years. The same crew work with Bauer, and his accomplices/musicians Sylvain Cartigny and Joseph Dahan, on the second show, Western. It’s an almost word-for-word adaptation of the 1959 script for The Day of the Outlaw set in the 19th century. The music score changes somewhat. Together, the André de Toth-inspired work and Shock Corridor span almost a century of American history. Bauer chose these films for their focus on certain American social and political issues which were red hot at the time, or are still burning and simmering today. The young French actors embrace aspects of the American “un-dream” with energy and imagination, and carry spectators away with them and their youthful enthusiasm. La Nuit Américaine, Bauer's double-bill, is going on tour in France after their last night in Montreuil on 26 October 2018. At the time of writing neither play has subtitles. When I was starting in the 90's Andrea had all the work. She was connected to all of the most interesting theatre companies in toronto and had production managed many of them. I envied her for getting their first, for having the ability to get into the middle of the most interesting creative work, but that was not the whole story. Andrea is a brilliant artist, she learned her craft while working with iconic Canadian theatre artists like the Daniels - Daniel Brooks and Daniel McIiver, she was a part of the re-invention of alternative theatre in Toronto with the Poor Alex theatre and the companies surrounding it, with the fringe and with summer works - and most importantly, she fostered and trained a generation of theatre artists that themselves became top artists in their own right, like Rebecca Picherack and Michelle Ramsey. Now she runs one of the most important training programs in Canada for theatre production The National Theatre School in MontrealI had a sublime conversation with Andrea about her career, training and philosophy of design as well as the changes she has wrought at NTS during her 6 year tenure. This is an important conversation.

Factory Theatre, in association with b current performing arts, is proud to present the world premiere of trace, a one-man-two-piano-play written, composed and performed by former Factory Artistic Associate Jeff Ho (Ophelia, Prince Hamlet/Why Not Theatre), and directed by Factory Artistic Director Nina LeeAquino.A painfully personal story of family and genealogy, trace follows the footprints taken by Jeff’s great grandmother who fled the Japanese in WWII by escaping to Hong Kong, losing one of her two sons during the trek; his mother’s similar pilgrimage to Canada, also with two sons in tow; and by Jeff himself, when he too embarked on a journey, moving from Markham to Montreal to pursue an uncharacteristically Chinese life.Spanning 100 years and three generations, and featuring virtuosic original piano compositions composed by Jeff, traceis a chamber play structured as a piano sonata with a prelude, three movements and a coda. A convergence of theatrical and symphonic storytelling, trace celebrates the courage and strength of his matriarchal forebears while acknowledging the lasting implications of familial sacrifice.trace marks the playwriting debut from Jeff Ho, referred to as a “discreet revelation” by the Montreal Gazette. How did a choice of school help? What is it like to tour? What's something you should definitely not do? The focus for this week is “back to school.” How does theatre school help prepare a working actor? Today, I talk to actor Steve Ross who is just finishing up his eleventh year of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and he started his journey at Canada's National Theatre School and I just need to preface that, when I was recording this podcast, I was suffering from a mild case of consumption – better known as a cold – I'm sniffling and coughing, all that fun stuff. I apologize greatly. Lindsay: Hello everyone! I'm here with Steve Ross. Hello Steve! Steve: Hello! How are you? Lindsay: I'm wonderful. Thank you so much for joining me today. Steve: Pleasure. Lindsay: All right. So, first of all, where in the world are you right now? Steve: I am in Stratford. I am in my eleventh season at the Stratford Festival. Lindsay: Is that lovely to have a long-term job? Do you look forward to it every year? Steve: It's fantastic. Lindsay: Yeah? Steve: Not only is it nice to have an eight-month gig in general but it's also just a really fantastic place to work. I have loved it since I got here. I didn't intend to ever get here. Lindsay: No? Steve: No, I didn't ever think I would, actually. It was sort of assumed when I went to the National Theatre School. It's kind of a pipeline and people just immediately head to Stratford, but I didn't because I wanted to really look at musicals. When I graduated, it was the time of the big, big musicals and multiple musicals running in Toronto and I wanted to focus on that. So, I moved to Toronto right away instead of pursuing Stratford and I was there for seven years before they called me to come in to audition and I finally did get my head around, “Yeah, we could do both; we can do musicals and classical stuff here,” and I have since fallen deeply in love with the place. Lindsay: Isn't that interesting? I think sometimes actors get into their head that they can only be one kind of actor, do one kind of thing. Steve: Yeah. Lindsay: Is that something that you went through when you were a younger actor? Steve: Well, I think I imposed it on myself, weirdly. There I was at a really wonderful classical school that was giving you wonderful classical training and all I wanted was to do musicals and I guess I was too narrow-minded. That's all I wanted to do and I actually almost quit NTS. Lindsay: Wow. Steve: Because I thought, “You know what? If I'm going to do this, I should focus more on musical theatre,” and, as I was on my way to quit, our singing teacher at NTS walked by me in the hall – and he was a great guy – and he said, “Oh, where are you going?” I said, “I think I'm going to quit and go to Sheraton for musical theatre,” and, completely innocently, he went, “Oh, that's weird.

Since March 2008, The Local Grain Revolution series has been following the evolution of Canada's first Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project for grain. A total of 180 members and one business from the communities of Nelson and Creston, British Columbia, are blazing a trail towards a local grain economy. Kootenay Harvest Revival II On this Part V of the series, we explore the second in a three-part series of recordings from the Kootenay Harvest Revival - an event hosted by Deconstructing Dinner, the Nelson-Creston Grain CSA and All Seasons Café. The two-day event was held to celebrate the CSA's monumental harvest of grain and to use the success of the project as a "catalyst for a local food revolution." Day 1 of the event heard from a series of speakers who shared the history of food production in the Kootenay regions of British Columbia. By exploring what was once possible to grow and produce in the area, it was hoped that the event would inspire visions of what the soil is currently able to provide both now and into the future. Certainly the Grain CSA is one of those projects unearthing the potential of the region. On this Part II of the Revival recordings, we hear from author and farmer Luanne Armstrong who spoke on finding one's sense of self through place. "In this day in age, we need to think about where we live, not only where we live and how we connect to it but how we look after it so it can look after us," says Luanne. She also described what the word "farmer" means to her. Also on this broadcast; CSA farmer Keith Huscroft, actor/writer/historian Richard Rowberry and the music of Bessie Wapp. Voices Luanne Armstrong, Author, Blue Valley: An Ecological Memoir (Boswell, BC) - Luanne Armstrong is a novelist, freelance writer, editor, and publisher. She is deeply interested in writing about place and nature. Her recent book, Blue Valley, An Ecological Memoir, is about growing up in the Kootenay region of B.C. and was published in 2007 by Maa Press. Luanne has taught Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Langara College, and in venues across Canada. She holds a Masters in Creative Writing from UBC and a Ph.D in Education from UBC. She presently lives on her organic heritage farm on the east shore of Kootenay Lake. Keith Huscroft, Farmer, Huscroft Farm (Lister, BC) - Keith is a fourth-generation farmer. His great-grandparents were the first white settlers in the Creston Valley and his farm has been in operation for about 100 years. Keith takes all measures to ensure no inputs are required on his farm. He uses mixed farming practices and fertilizes using only animal and green manures. He is one of a shrinking number of farmers farming with horses instead of fossil-fuel dependent technologies.
