Even as John Newton is perhaps best known for his hymns, he should also be known for his letters. Those most familiar with Newton seem to agree that “letter-writing was his greatest gift” earning him the reputation as “the great spiritual director of souls through the post.” It certainly wasn't uncommon to write letters in eighteenth-century England, but John Newton was an uncommon letter writer. What makes his letters so significant in the history of the church? Join Drs. Haykin and Pohlman as they discuss the letters of John Newton. The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Grant Gordon, philanthropist and Founder of the Reekimlane Foundation, joins Alberto Lidji to discuss high-net-worth (HNW) family philanthropy and responsible stewardship of wealth. Grant encourages global listeners who are interested in philanthropy to take the first step and connect with likeminded individuals who are attracted by philanthropy. Grant founded the Reekimlane Foundation, which grants out approximately $1m annually. The foundation is a grant maker and also acts as a conduit for various other philanthropic endeavours launched by Grant. Child poverty and community regeneration are two thematic areas close to Grant’s heart. Currently, he’s also exploring early childhood development as a potential area for more philanthropic engagement. When asked about what prompted him to get into philanthropy, he notes that, for him, it’s about values. Grant grew up in an affluent family and he was brought up knowing that there are certain responsibilities associated with having wealth. Philanthropy came naturally to him. For those individuals who are thinking about getting into philanthropy, but haven’t done so for one reason or another, he simply suggests one start by having a look around to see what issues resonate most so that what one really cares about is identified. He references the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a good starting point -- Goal No.1 is about tackling poverty. Everyone is different and determining how much money and resources one should donate is a personal decision. In Grant’s case, there’s an ongoing family discussion on what it means to be a responsible citizen which, in turn, helps him and his family decide what works best for them. There are two key insights Grant brings from his private sector experience: one is the importance of ‘mission’ and ensuring that all Trustees on your board are fully aligned; the other pertains to leadership, where one needs a CEO who’s not just passionate but also who has the skills and resilience to do the job. Grant’s takeaway for listeners: as a philanthropist (or potential philanthropist) never regard yourself as being on your own. Go out and talk to others! Full episode notes, links and guest bios are available at Lidji.org – Please subscribe to this podcast if you find enjoy listening to it. Thank you!

Grant Gordon and Ashley Levy talk to us about self-acceptance, careers and more.
Many of you will remember the interview I did with Grant Gordon, who works on humanitarian policy innovation at the International Rescue Committee. That conversation received a huge response — some of you even wrote in to say it had changed your career path and you were now reorienting towards humanitarian work and crisis response. Now, Vox Media, in partnership with the IRC, is launching Displaced, a podcast about the world’s most pressing humanitarian crises and the people whose lives they upend. Each week, Grant, alongside his co-host, IRC chief innovation officer Ravi Gurumurthy, bring on a guest to dig into the world’s toughest problems — both to understand them and to think through how to solve them. Today, the world’s most destabilizing crisis is the civil war in Syria — it’s led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the displacement of millions more, a refugee crisis that has undermined the European Union and brought America and Russia perilously close to armed conflict. In this episode, Grant and Ravi interview Stephen Hickey, who served as UK deputy ambassador to Damascus in 2010, and was ejected by the Assad regime as its response to the protests became more vicious. So he was in Syria as this began, and his perspective is crucial to understanding where it’s gone and why it’s been so hard to solve. Join us as we discuss how the Artemis Health Data Analytics Platform provides a set of tools that helps employers leverage their data to identify cost savings opportunities and measure results of existing programs. At long last, here’s the Ask Ezra Anything episode. You sent in great questions, and I answered as many as I could. To keep me honest — and to make sure I didn’t just talk to myself for two hours — I invited friend-of-the-show Grant Gordon back to the program to help out. We covered a lot of ground. Topics included:- Immortality - The best concerts I’ve been to- Why I think culture is the biggest impediment to a universal basic income- Three lessons this podcast has taught me- Three lessons the 2016 election taught me- Three lessons running Vox has taught me- Why my interview questions are so annoyingly long and rambling- How explanatory reporting differs from other kinds of reporting- The best advice I’ve been given about interviewing- My favorite books- Why the idea that this reality is a computer simulation reflects a failure of imaginationAnd much, much more. Thanks to everyone who sent in questions, and apologies for all the ones we didn’t get to. This was a lot of fun. We’ll definitely do it again soon. Learn more about your ad choices. He’s a fellow at the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation, and has worked on humanitarian and development policy for the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the UN Office of Humanitarian Coordination, the UN Refugee Agency, as well as the Rwandan Government, Open Society Justice Initiative and other organizations. All of that is a long way of saying he works on the some of the world's worst problems and conflicts, and tries to figure out which interventions will actually help. He’s embedded with the Congolese military to try to understand why soldiers attack citizens, he's used satellites to monitor and deter genocidal violence in Darfur, and he's studied the ways in which peacekeepers can win hearts and minds with local communities in Haiti. And over and over again, he's found that good intentions do not always make good policies. It's a valuable lesson — and Grant is a valuable voice — for anyone who thinks seriously about policymaking. Grant is also a good friend whose work has long fascinated me, and so it was great to get a chance to interrogate him on it for two hours. Among other things, we covered:- How to read academic literature efficiently- Grant’s path from being a kid in California to working in the Rwandan health ministry to hiding under cars in Congo- What his whiteness and Jewish heritage means in his work on humanitarian policy- How the politics around humanitarian intervention have changed since the 90s- How and why he got an internship, as a college student, in the Rwandan health ministry by cold emailing Rwanda's health minister- How randomized controlled trials do and don’t help humanitarian work- Why it's actually difficult for a fragile society to build an army strong enough to protect its citizens but not so strong it overthrows the government- How to care for yourself when you work in and out of conflict-torn placesAnd much more. Towards the end of the interview, Grant turns the tables and questions me for a bit, so keep an ear out for that. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Excellent talk with LKP regular/Sack Magic co-founder Grant Gordon and Canadian immigrant/comedian Graham Kay! These descriptions are getting shorter and shorter! Because who cares! It's seriously a very good episode so just fucking listen to it!
My good friend and frequent LKP guest, Grant Gordon, is moving from NY to LA. In this very special farewell episode, we sit down with our other good friends, comedians Greg Stone & James Mattern, and bullshit about life, love and kidney stones.
Grant Gordon is one of my closest friends, a very funny comedian, and my cohost on our old Brooklyn-based weekly comedy showcase, "Sack Magic" (R.I.P.). He also has a thing for larger women. A LOT larger.
Internet enigma Grant Gordan joins to talk couch surfing, be dismissive as a defense mechanism, and play Steakhouse or Gaybar.
Nathan is joined by the hilarious Grant Gordon. Grant is into big women, and talks about basically have to 'come out' to people with that, because of these damn cheese heads! Also talk Snoop in Truro. Check it! Twitter @gograntgordon @nathanmacintosh
We recorded this episode on 4/20, so I had planned on talking about drugs to some extent. We ended up going way past weed to ayahuasca, a psychedelic drug known for giving users profound insights into life and existence. So yeah, things get kinda deep. And then we talk comedy a bit. Anyway, it's a good one. Be sure to follow all my guests, @myqkaplan, @zachsherwin and @gograntgordon
Sat down with a couple of very funny comedians, Grant Gordon (@gogratngordon) and Janelle James (@janellejcomic). Grant and I host a weekly show together in Brooklyn known as Sack Magic. He also lived with my parents and I for two weeks this Winter. Janelle opens for Todd Barry and Hannibal Buress on the road. She's also the very first female guest I've had, making her the Valentina Tereshkova of this podcast. Wow, Janelle's credits look way more impressive than Grant's. He's gonna hate me for that.

Libby Purves is joined by Timothy and Shane Spall; theatre director Barrie Rutter; biologist Juliane Koepcke, who survived a plane crash in the Peruvian jungle when she was 17, and musician and writer Grant Gordon. After spending a summer on the Thames, Shane and actor husband Timothy Spall headed out to sea on their Dutch barge Matilda, with only a road atlas and a vast amount of ignorance. A decade before Timothy had been diagnosed with acute leukaemia and was given days to live. Shocked at how life can pass you by they decided that when, and if, Timothy got better, they would buy a boat. The Voyages of The Princess Matilda by Shane Spall is published by Ebury. Barrie Rutter is the founder and Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides theatre company. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their first production, Richard III. His distinctive approach to theatre is fuelled by his passion for language and his celebration of the richness and muscularity of the Northern voice. The productions are known for being unpretentious, simple and stark, making the audience focus on the language. Juliane Koepcke grew up in Lima and the rainforests of Peru where her parents founded the Panguana ecological research station. On Christmas Eve 1971, she boarded an internal flight from Lima to Pucallpa with her mother. The plane carrying 92 passengers crashed into dense Amazonian jungle killing everyone on board apart from Juliane. Landing in the jungle, she survived for ten days before being rescued. Now a biologist herself, she continues to fight to save the rainforests of Peru. Her book When I Fell from the Sky is published by Nicholas Brealey publishing. Grant Gordon is a musician, formerly with The Divine Comedy and producer of the TV series Big Brother and I'm A Celebrity. In his book 'Cobras in the Rough' he tells of how he and his father's relationship was cemented by their shared love of golf. Following the sudden death of his father in 2009, Grant goes to India in pursuit of the golf courses built by the British Raj to try and come to terms with his death. Cobras in the Rough is published by Constable and Robinson. Producer: Paula McGinley.
Blaxploitation gets updated in this dated movie. Maddog Mattern, Grant Gordon, Trafton Crandall and Jon Clarke join Mario Van Peebles for a pretentious study in shlock. Read people's names shaved into their heads! Watch Chris Rock smoke crack and cry! Break out your Dutch Angles!
