Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 28, 2025 is: sward • SWORD • noun Sward is a literary word that refers to an area of land covered with grass. // The hikers emerged from the forest to find a green sward dotted with yellow and purple flowers stretching out before them. See the entry > Examples: “A century or so ago, if you lived in the Boston area and were obsessed with trees, you were in good company. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society, which had united enthusiasts of rare apples and ornamental maples since 1832, had helped found Mount Auburn Cemetery and endowed it with an immense, exotic plant collection. ... Tree mania seems to have come late to Greenlawn, however. Photographs taken sometime before 1914 show a bleak, bare sward.” — Veronique Greenwood, The Boston Globe, 18 Dec. 2023 Did you know? Sward sprouted from the Old English sweard or swearth, meaning “skin” or “rind.” It was originally used as a term for the skin of the body before being extended to another surface—that of the Earth. The word's specific grassy sense dates to the 16th century, and lives on today mostly in novels from centuries past, such as Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles: “The sun was so near the ground, and the sward so flat, that the shadows of Clare and Tess would stretch a quarter of a mile ahead of them, like two long fingers pointing afar to where the green alluvial reaches abutted against the sloping sides of the vale.”

To those that know him, the man needs no introduction.  For those that don't, his name is Beau Carino and he's the founder of one of Long Island's hottest live music venues, Beau's Bar, in the village of Greenlawn.  For nearly 20 years, Beau has attracted some of the finest talent in the area, ranging from young guns like Dog In A Pile to veteran guitar virtuosos like Jeff Matson, lead singer and guitarist for Dark Star Orchestra.  In Season 3, Episode 8 Beau takes us back to his early days when he took over the bar, cleaned house, rid any lingering thugs and transformed it into the peaceful musical oasis that it is today.  He describes how his wife, Heather, takes care of the books while Beau is the bar's frontman and “chief cook and bottlewasher”.     When Beau isn't behind the bar, you'll find him on the basketball court coaching his daughter, or reminiscing about coaching his sons baseball, or planning his next musical adventure.  He is the true definition of a family man, and the true definition of a beautiful soul.  Correction….a BEAUtiful soul ;) And if you're curious, Beau does have a last name, but you'll have to come to his bar to find our what it is for yourself.  If you're lucky, he may even tell you what his real first name is.  If you're lucky…   Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!https://www.facebook.com/reel/1240841283851132https://music.apple.com/us/album/terrapin-station-live/307801079?i=307801253

Elizabeth Tomlin and Professor Catherine Cavadini share a conversation about a new family book, Saints: A Family Story, that she co-authored with her Father Professor John Cavadini of the University of Notre Dame. In this episode we talk about ways that Katie's family has integrated the saints and the Catholic faith into their family - through a habit of prayer, storytelling, and reading. The book arose from John sending “coupons” to his grandchildren during the pandemic, on which they could request a story of saint. John began writing saint stories to his grandchildren, and together, John and Katie compiled this collection of saint stories to share more broadly. Saints is gorgeously illustrated by Tess Cassady in a way that brings each of these saints to life and invites reader to imagine these  holy people are our family members – because they are.  You can can find a PDF of some of the illustrations is on Paraclete Press's website DG-9781640607545.pdf Link to Saints: A Family Story Author and Illustrator Bios Dr. Catherine Cavadini Katie is Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Notre Dame where she directs the Masters of Arts Program in Theology. Katie typically offers courses on scriptural interpretation, spirituality, and the stories of the saints. She and her husband, Anthony, live in South Bend, Indiana, with their four children.  Dr. John Cavadini is Professor of Theology and Director of the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. John's work as a theologian arises from his love for the Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine. Knighted by Pope Benedict XVI for his service to the Church, John lives in South Bend, Indiana, where he and his wife, Nancy, receive daily diversion through visits from any number of their 18 grandchildren.  Anastassia Cassady Tess studied art at the University of Michigan and teaches art history at Trinity School in Greenlawn in South Bend. Almost ever since the city of Indianapolis was platted in 1821, a site along the White River has been distinctive for various reasons. It started as a burial site, then multiple graveyards that became known collectively as Greenlawn Cemetery, where thousands of early residents were buried. Beginning in 1917, Diamond Chain had a manufacturing plant on the site just southwest of downtown that employed hundreds of Hoosiers. Now the site on White River is planned to be the location of a new stadium for the Indy Eleven pro soccer team. So Hoosier History Live will do a deep dive into the history of Greenlawn, the burial site of initial settlers and subsequent residents, including civic leaders, early African American residents (in segregated parcels), infants, impoverished Hoosiers and a vast range of other Hoosiers. Because of various factors, including the fact that Greenlawn was prone to flooding, the cemetery was closed in 1890.

John Vlahos today about how we, as living icons, should be relating to others.  What does this look like?  In a world full of judgement and friction, we can be vessels of love...spreading the love and grace of God to others put in our path.  Let us as Christians be the example.  Today we talk about how. Fr. John was born and raised in Merrillville, Indiana. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Public Financial Management from Indiana University in 1997 and his Masters of Divinity Degree in 2001 from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts. Fr. John is married to Presvytera Tina and they have two daughters (19 years old and 12 years old). Fr. John comes to us with over 19 years of experience as a clergymen of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. He joined the St. Paraskevi Community in Greenlawn, NY in October 2020. Prior to joining there, Fr. John was the Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in NYC from 2014 to 2020. Previous to that, he was the priest of the Church of the Holy Resurrection in Brookville, New York from 2008-2014 and the Associate Priest of St. Paul's Cathedral in Hempstead, New York from 2006-2008. He began his ordained ministry as a Deacon to Archbishop Demetrios of America from 2002-2006. Is it time to make some changes in your life? Do you want to stop the madness and get on track with your health? Maybe coaching is right for you. I've helped many people gain their health back over the years, and would love to talk with you. Nathalie tells the story of a twisted love triangle (love square?) involving Goldyne Pizer, Betty Fabiano, and Joan Rabel. Betty was having some issues with her husband, Peter, causing her to move in with her “friend” Joan. Back in the 1950s, two women having a romantic relationship was quite taboo. However, Betty reconciled with Peter and moved back in, this made Joan really upset. Joan began seeing Goldyne and during their time together Joan would complain about Betty’s evil husband. Goldyne, desperate to please Joan, dressed up as a superhero and went to the Fabiano residence on Halloween night to murder Peter. Rachel then takes us through the history of Halloween candy poisoning panic. She discusses cases of presumed random Halloween poisonings, including the death of Timothy Marc O’Bryan and Kevin Toston. Next, she moves on to the history of random poisonings, briefly covering the case of the Tylenol murders and the false alarm poisonings of Sunkist Fun Fruits Dinosaur candies. She concludes with the case of a Halloween prank gone wrong. Helen Pfiel of Greenlawn, NY, was getting frustrated with the teens trick or treating in her neighborhood. Helen put together a trick for the teens, instead of candy they would get dog treats, steel wool pads, and ant poison. Helen warned those darn kids they were getting prank treats, but the parents in the neighborhood were not pleased. Helen was arrested for endangering children and received a suspended sentence. Confederate monument in Indy and Camp Morton

Following the recent dismantling in an Indianapolis park of a Confederate monument that originally marked the graves of prisoners of war who died at a Union Army camp, Hoosier History Live will explore the historic context of various aspects of the controversy. Several guests will participate during the show: an expert on Civil War history, including the former Camp Morton and Confederate sympathizers in Indiana during the war; an IUPUI professor who has researched the history of the monument that was moved from a former cemetery to Garfield Park on the city's south side; and a civic leader who oversees presentations about African-American history in the state. Civil War historian Steve Towne, the author of Surveillance and Spies in the Civil War (Ohio University Press) and other books and award-winning articles about the Civil War, is an archivist at IUPUI. His colleague Paul Mullins, an anthropology professor, has researched the Confederate monument, which he notes was placed initially at Greenlawn Cemetery in 1909.  Greenlawn, the first major public cemetery in Indianapolis, was located near the White River and Kentucky Avenue, a site that was prone to flooding and later became increasingly industrialized. The monument, funded by the federal government, was a mass marker for 1,616 Confederate POWs whose remains could not be identified individually. Their remains were moved to Crown Hill Cemetery, Greenlawn's successor as the city's major graveyard; the reburial site at Crown Hill is known as Confederate Mound. According to Paul Mullins, the POWs' remains were reburied at Confederate Mound in 1931. Along with Steve Towne and Paul Mullins, our guests during the show will include Ophelia Wellington, founder of Freetown Village, a living history museum she created in 1982 to teach African-American history. During our show, Steve Towne will share insights about conditions at Camp Morton, which was created for the induction and training of Union Army soldiers on a site near 19th and Alabama streets that previously had served as the state fairgrounds. During the course of the war, Camp Morton primarily served as a POW camp for Confederate soldiers and sailors; by the end of the war, about 1,700 had died there. Today, much of the Herron-Morton Place Neighborhood is on the site of Camp Morton. With the moves of the POWs' remains, many could not be identified. The relocation of the federally-funded monument (with a metal plate at the base that lists the names of the POWs) from Greenlawn to Garfield Park was advocated by the Southern Club of Indianapolis, which Paul Mullins will describe during our show. The placement of the monument in a public park in the late 1920s has been controversial for several years. Since the June 8 dismantling, it has been stored at an undisclosed location. It is not the only Confederate monument, memorial or marker in Indiana. According to the Indiana Historical Bureau, a state historic marker in the Franklin County town of Laurel, birthplace of a Confederate brigadier general, is under review for "misleading and inaccurate statements" as well as the lack of proper historic context on the signage. In Terre Haute, an obelisk at Woodlawn Cemetery memorializes eleven Confederates who died in a POW camp in the city. The phone lines will be opened earlier than usual during our show for listeners' questions and comments.

The big beer news in town was that Atwater Brewery sold to a subsidiary of Molson Coors, Tenth and Blake. But why? And what's next? To take a look behind the deal, a talk with Atwater owner Mark Rieth. That conversation is at 7 minutes in. We also round up a few things happening around Michigan and Detroit: Tesla can now sell cars easier in Michigan, and service them through a subsidiary. That's big news. But there may be more to the story. Experts say that a dealer protection law that passed almost unanimously - and with bipartisan support - probably couldn't have withstood a true challenge in court. That would have major impacts as buyers are used to online and streamlined buying experiences, and more than 36,000 people are employed by Michigan's 600 or so franchise dealers. Here's a link to the Attorney General's announcement. Detroit's three casinos have record revenue. The Detroit River at Ralph C. Wilson park is going to get a big cleanup, as it turns out it's an "area of concern." The city of Detroit's property values have gone up 20% in the last year, says the city. But we give context. In 2008, it was worth $8.8 billion. In 2018, $3 billion. So although some progress, nowhere near a recovery to post-recession levels. McNichols (really, they should just call it 6 Mile) is getting a major streetscape facelift between Livernois and Greenlawn. Think the Fitzgerald neighborhood, just west of University Detroit Mercy.
