Before Spirit Halloween took over, most of us built our costumes with cardboard, glue, and imagination. In this nostalgic episode, Lyle and Bob from Static Radio share stories, laughs, and memories of when creativity made Halloween magical. They talk about DIY costumes from childhood, whether anyone ever guessed what you were supposed to be, and how families once gathered around the kitchen table to create their own spooky masterpieces. Lyle also dives into the history of homemade costumes — from early handmade disguises to the rise of store-bought vinyl suits.

Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like whatever they want and other girls can't say anything about it. At least, that's what Mean Girls told us. But there's one voice that does get a say...and that's our planet. In this episode, we're looking at last year's most viral trends, what's on the rise this year, and how to tell if it's something you actually value or just another ‘cool girl costume' bandwagon moment.

Unmask the secrets of a $50M costume empire. From million-dollar days to seasonal surges, discover what Halloween sellers can teach every Amazon entrepreneur. Fraser Smeaton, the mastermind behind a $50 million costume empire, joins us to unveil the fascinating world of seasonal business success. With Halloween just around the corner, Fraser spills the beans on capturing 15% of annual revenue in just four days leading up to the spooky celebration. We explore the cultural evolution of Halloween, from its roots with Scottish and Irish immigrants to its booming presence across the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Europe. Fraser also shares how confectionery companies have sweetened Halloween's appeal in the UK over the past 15 years, and offers a nostalgic look at traditional celebrations like guising in Scotland. The journey from a bedroom startup to a global costume phenomenon is nothing short of inspiring. Fraser recounts how writing the website URL on Morphsuits turned customers into living billboards, and how harnessing early Facebook advertising created waves in the e-commerce ocean. As the business scaled rapidly, they navigated the storm of market saturation and competition, pivoting towards direct-to-consumer sales on Amazon. Fraser emphasizes the significance of e-commerce tools like Helium 10 and the wisdom gained from networking events, which transformed their operation from $15 million to a $50 million powerhouse. Talking about the operational side, we uncover the complexities of managing a seasonal costume business. From intricate retail partnerships with giants like Spirit Halloween and Target to the art of balancing high-end and budget-friendly offerings, Fraser reveals the strategic intricacies of thousands of SKUs. He sheds light on the international demand for costumes, highlighting the year-round efforts involved in product design and inventory management. As tariffs fluctuate and international expansion beckons, Fraser's insights provide a roadmap for navigating economic challenges while maintaining a festive spirit in the vibrant world of costume sales. Only 19% of U.S. adults say they want “scary vibes” this Halloween—while 30% plan to wear multiple costumes and 70% say organized events are steady or increasing. Philip and Scott unpack the annual HalloweenCostumes.com survey and why it matters: the demand for cute, funny, and cosplay-style experiences is growing faster than gore, audiences are starting to plan earlier, and AI is already a factor in how people search for inspiration. They also discuss how rising competition and budget-conscious consumers may shape event calendars, citing Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Scary Farm cutting weeknights while Hersheypark's Dark Nights leans on bundled value and high-quality houses. The big question: with more families and casual fans in the market, can “giggles” and “cute” Halloween now generate more growth than scares? Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
I've come to believe that play and creativity can completely change the way we move through our days. For me, it started when I decided to bring Halloween back into my life and create a whimsical “crow lady” character, and that one spark of joy gave me more energy, focus, and flow than I'd felt in years. In this episode, I share how that experience opened my eyes to the bigger question of why joy matters so much in medicine and in life, and why so many of us, especially women in medicine and working moms, tend to abandon it. What would happen if you treated joy as a vital sign, right alongside sleep or nutrition? How might your days look if your calendar held space for wonder and curiosity, not just obligations? I'll walk you through simple flow enhancers like gratitude, novelty, and embodiment, as well as the disruptors that scatter our attention. My hope is that this conversation encourages you to see play as a prescription for resilience and growth, and maybe even helps you reclaim your own sparks of joy. If you're wondering whether or not to wear a costume to a Halloween party at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, here's what you need to know.Does Everyone Dress up at Disney Parks Halloween Parties?Disney Halloween parties are very fun events and, of course, Halloween is a time when many people love to dress up. But if you're heading to your first Disney Halloween party and you're wondering if you should bring a costume on vacation with you, this is what you need to know. Whether you are attending Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney's Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World, or the Oogie Boogie Bash Disney at California Adventure at Disneyland, dressing up is a fun way to add to the Halloween spirit.A quick note to keep in mind is that Disney does have rules around what types of costumes are acceptable (and more specifically what is not acceptable), so be sure to check the Disney costume guidelines on their website before you go.Will I Feel Out-of-Place if I Dress Up (or Don't Dress Up) for a Disney Halloween Party?A common question for first-time guests at a Disney Parks Halloween party is “Will I feel out of place if I don't dress up?” Or sometimes, “Will if feel out of place if I do dress up?”In both cases, the answer is no. Disney encourages party guests to dress up because it adds to the festive atmosphere of the parties, but not everyone does. We have been to Disney Halloween events at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World and in our experience, it feels like a 50-50 split (give or take) between costumes and non-costumes on most party nights. People attending Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World may be more inclined to wear a costume compared to the Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland, but either way, whether you go in costume or not is completely up to you. Instead of a Halloween Costume, You Can Go with a Spooky ThemeCast members and other guests love seeing the costumes that guests wear. Some people really go over the top and it is great to see. But, remember to balance the practicality of the costume if you plan to go on rides or do anything other than posing with characters and trick-or-treating.If you don't want to go fully into costume mode, there are other options. An easier way to get into the Halloween spirit of the Disney party vibe is to wear a graphic t-shirt or similar apparel that has a Halloween theme generally (or even a Disney Halloween theme, like Hocus Pocus or even a Haunted Mansion shirt). This is easier to wear, can be more comfortable and won't take up too much extra space in your luggage. Also, if you're attending one of the Disney Halloween parties in August or early September, it can be hot and humid (and even stormy) at night, so that is something to consider no matter what you plan to wear.Shop at 1923 Main Street, the Spirit Brand for Those Who Love to TravelThank you for listening to the Travel Style Podcast at 1923MainStreet.com.Shop unique and original travel inspired and subtle Disney travel clothing, including t-shirts, sweatshirt, hoodies and more at 1923 Main Street.Follow along on X, Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook.Thank you for listening and always remember to roam freely and wear boldly.Mike Belobradic and Amelia Belobradic--Media provided by Jamendo

We're talking… middle names, Radio DJs, Tom and Mel Giedroyc on the Scott Mills show, unsubstantiated Muhammad Ali quotes, halloween costume madness, unwanted dancing advances, a parent & child dance competition, Toblerone prizes, farty beers and a fridge full three year old Heinekens. Then we answer email questions about parenting advice for a socially anxious father, cold plunge mantras (and a cool new name for Tom) and our favourite film franchises.
