In his own words My purpose is to teach patients how to modify their lifestyle and diet and posture and muscular balance to feel better and have a healthier life free from chronic disease. When I was young, I was very heavy. I changed my eating to a healthier, lower fat, natural foods diet, and started exercising and I lost a lot of weight. Then when I was reaching my later teenage years, I was not happy being a 90 lb. weakling–in fact a 150 lb. weakling, so I started to weight train and and eat more protein and I put on muscle and became a successful bodybuilder. I won the Mr. Los Angeles competition in 1985. I had learned how to lose or gain weight to improve my appearance. However, I looked good, but I felt bad. I had a huge amount of gas and bloating and a lot of stomach pains. I discovered that certain foods, like dairy, and certain carbohydrate foods that had helped me to gain weight, were difficult for me to digest and tolerate. I had nearly constant symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I also started to suffer from hypoglycemic episodes from eating health food oatmeal cookies and bran muffins that spiked my blood sugar and I realized that I had to avoid eating such high glycemic carbs. I realized that how you eat dramatically affects your digestive system and your physiology. Your digestive system is your key to overall health. It is where you digest your food and absorb nutrients. It is the wall that must be kept intact to keep out toxins. A break down of this intestinal mucosal wall is often referred to as leaky gut. I came to understand that having a healthy gastrointestinal system is a key to your overall health. I have been studying and discovering ways to improve digestion in order to improve your health and help you to prevent and overcome chronic diseases. I want to show others not only how to manipulate your body composition, but to help them figure out a way to eat that makes them feel their best. I also became gradually became more aware of how alterations in your posture and structural alignment can result in pain and altered function. As a chiropractor, by analyzing and helping patients to make corrections in their posture and alignment is one of my focuses in practice. This occurs both with regular chiropractic adjustments and chiropractic treatments, as well as with teaching patients proper postural cues and exercises. This isn't an exact science, but in my judgment, we are in the third phase of sports chiropractic. Phase 1 was pioneered by many great chiropractors before there was even the name sports chiropractor. Phase 2 layered on more advanced soft tissue therapy, particular assessments, and sports rehab. In this episode, I break down phase 1 and phase 2 of sports chiropractors and the newer phase 3 of sports chiropractics. This Phase 3 isn't replacing Phase 2, nor does it make Phase 2 antiquated. It's simply different. I spent some time highlighting the positives of Phase 3 sports chiropractic and some of the pitfalls from a business and clinical standpoint in this episode. Our goal at MCM is for all evidence-informed chiropractors to thrive clinically and as a business, and my hope for this episode is to get sports chiropractors to develop systems and practices to improve profit margins and build a great practice. Perhaps this episode can be a dialogue starter on improving the practice health of the Phase 3 Sports Chiropractor. The good news is many Phase 3 sports chiropractors are building thriving practices.

Dr Lara Zakaria is a Pharmacist, Nutritionist, and adjunct professor specializing in Functional Medicine and Personalized nutrition. She began her career in pharmacy community practice, noticing that her patients' chronic conditions were advancing. Year-to-year accumulating new diagnoses and a longer list of medications instead of getting healthier. This was the “aha” moment that the pharmaceutical-based guidelines she was trained in were intended to manage chronic disease not prevent progression. That led her to FxMed and the power of nutrition. Dr Zakaria is passionate about prevention and reversal of metabolic, allergic, and autoimmune disease. She splits her time between clinical practice, teaching, and mentorship in service of expanding awareness and access to FxMed and Personalized Nutrition. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). On today's episode, Dennis sits down with Sports Chiropractor and mental and physical chemistry researcher, Dr. Carmen Romano. Dr. Carmen Romano received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Bridgeport University in December of 1999. After earning his degree, Dr Romano spent a year practicing in Italy before returning to New Jersey. Since 2003, he has owned Madison Medical & Sports Rehabilitation Center in Madison, NJ. Madison Medical is an integrative medical center that includes Internal Medicine, Functional Medicine, Physical Medicine, Chiropractic, Podiatric and Physical Therapy services to patients. He also owns and operates R3 Recovery Lab which offers cryotherapy, infrared sauna and pneumatic compression services as well as cold-pressed juices, detox cleanses and butter brain coffee. At Madison Medical, Dr Romano has created a center where patients receive immediate attention from a collaborating team of whole body wellness focused practitioners. What began as a small Chiropractic office in 2003 has grown to a 10,000 square foot integrative medical center through Dr Romano's philosophy and vision. Patient care at Madison Medical is a collaborative process with providers co-treating to address systemic issues along with current symptoms. Visits may include hormone and micro-nutrient testing, diagnostic ultrasound and x-ray, gait evaluations and orthotics to identify and address root causes of the symptoms being experienced. Dr Romano's newest venture, R3Recovery Lab was born out of the observed need for complimentary services such as Cryotherapy, Infrared Sauna and Pneumatic Compression to aid athletes in real recovery. Recognizing that pro athletes have access to these types of services every day, Dr Romano created R3 so that the “weekend-warrior” type athlete or average patient recovering from injury or illness could also benefit from these services.Today, J.P. gets deep into sharing his story starting from what inspired him to join the Army, the loss of his friend Justin while on mission and how that impacted his view on life, the day of his incident that led to his tragic injuries, his battle with recovery and his 12 suicide attempts, keeping faith when you're in the darkness, the book he wrote "Walking Again" and the support to handle life together. Today, Dennis and Dr. Romano talk about the wear and tear of the "grind", the effects of diet on the body and the brain, tweaking your diet to fit your lifestyle, importance of relationships and how it corresponds with your mental health, creating goals for yourself and business advice. If you are an athlete competing and training at a high level, you know the unbelievable stress that is put on the body week in and week out. It's essential to make sure you're focused on your recovery just as much as the training and competition itself. Today, we bring on Dr. Anthony Cutting from Advanced Chiropractic Meridian (Meridian, Idaho) who will be chatting with us about the benefits of chiropractic care and keeping your body right. Back on the show when I spoke with Walter Bond, he referenced the NBA Hall of Famer, John Stockton from his days with the Utah Jazz. Walter mentioned how important "taking care of the body" was for John during his career. What he mentioned was the focus on chiropractic adjustments that John would receive throughout his time with the Jazz. All because he believed in keeping his body aligned! Dr. Cutting has some of his own experiences in athletics and has his own experience with chiropractic care, which is what motivated him to get into the field he's in now. Listen to Dr. Cutting share his knowledge and experience with us and explain why he believes athletes (and anyone truly) should utilize this practice to help keep their bodies in the right condition to function properly! If you live in the Treasure Valley and would like to visit Dr. Cutting you can find him in these locations: Instagram: @activechiromeridian Visit his website: https://www.chiromeridian.com/ Or you can simply go to his practice and check it out. Debunking the Myths on Lasers I believe lasers are the most versatile healthcare tool we have today. Here's why: Low-intensity lasers have been in therapeutic use for more than fifty years. They've been proven effective for decades—the first Erchonia FDA clearance goes back to 2002. The effect is photochemical, not thermal, so treatment is painless, safe, and fast. Laser therapy is highly effective for treating a range of painful conditions, particularly osteoarthritis, lower back pain, neck pain, peripheral neuropathy, foot pain, and tendonitis. The studies back up the claims. In one important double-blind placebo study—the gold standard for clinical trials—laser therapy (eight treatments in one month) reduced pain by an average of 49 percent even when no other treatments were administered. With so many of us working from home this year and as business owners, it's past time to talk about ergonomics! Today's guest shares professional tips for setting up a home office in a way that will help you stay healthy, strong, and productive. Dr. Joella is a Sports Chiropractor and an Injury Prevention Specialist. She has over 27 years of experience treating people with acute and chronic pain due to soft tissue injuries. She has trained and evaluated hundreds, if not thousands, of people in different industries to create work environments that fit them and keep them injury-free. Now she brings her expertise to the online world and works with home-based businesses and entrepreneurs to turn any area of their home or apartment into a customized ergonomic workspace that allows them to be productive in comfort and create their Joy in Life! BUSINESS BUILDING INSIGHTSPursue what your heart tells you. Keep your mind plastic - be curious, find new things, think new things, be exposed to new things. Make a point to find joy in your life and share that joy with others. We all have that beautiful light inside that needs to come out. Setting Up Your Home Office The Right WaySet your workstation to be ergonomic for you. It's different from person to person. Even if you have ergonomic equipment, if it doesn't fit you - it's not ergonomic. Your desk should be angled 90 degrees away from the window. The window should shine from the side. If your monitor is in front of the window, the glare from the window to your monitor will affect your eyes. The same chair does not work for people of different heights. You may need to lower or raise the chair. Your feet should be flat on the floor. If your knees are higher than your tush when sitting in any chair, all the pressure is on your lower back. Keep your knees at 90 degrees or a little below. Have two to three finger distance between the back of your lower leg and the chair seat. Don't overreach for your laptop, keyboard, or mouse (or anything else). This can result in sore shoulders. Drop your arms to the sides, keep your arms in contact with your ribcage, and then bend the elbows to 90 degrees. That’s where your laptop/keyboard should be.

In this episode Shane Lawlor one of Europe's leading golf performance therapists discusses the range of issues he sees repeatedly in his specialist area, golf and the solutions that he is able to offer. With extensive expertise and experience in the treatment, screening and rehabilitation of golf injuries Shane has travelled the world with professional golfers and has worked with athletes at all levels. He shares the methods and approaches that make a difference in physical performance and discusses what it really takes to build an athlete. KEY TAKEAWAYS The pros get back problems because they hit too many balls at speed and the amateurs get problems because they don't rotate in the right way. In the treatment room, a selection of movement screens are used to work out what the problem is. We know now even if you have back pain you need to be moving around. It's about putting evidence and experience together. Back problems for amateur golfers are usually focused around hip mobility. Golf is a close chain movement where your feet are planted and then your hips are moving over them. The rotation should come from the hips but if this doesn't happen then the strain is on the back. The type of disc and facets in the back can determine whether someone is suitable for a particular sport. When you are building a golfer, you are building an athlete. Early specialisation of sports can be a problem because you overload on a particular pattern very early on. If you can get the core working effectively then this lessens the strain on the back. Extra mobility doesn't mean you are more stable it's all about control. You can't add length without adding strength and you are mobilised by strengthening it's important to stay strong. It's a very diverse sport and no 2 swings are the same so you should never try and copy someone else's swing. What makes someone a pro is their ability to get around their own limitations. BEST MOMENTS ‘If you build your mental game you can make it your reality' ‘If you can't hit a ball 300 yards or more then you are at a significant disadvantage so young players are always chasing speed as this means more distance' ‘There is no best coach it's the coach who best suits the person' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Back Pain Podcast Free Sciatica guide: www.thebackpainpodcast.com The Golf Chiro website Shane Lawlor LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOSTS Dave Elliot Dave is the owner of Advanced Chiropractic, a chain of Chiropractic and massage therapy clinics in Essex, UK. As an equestrian, physical fitness is a key part in becoming a great rider. Chiropractic care is undoubtedly one of the most important self-care practices an equestrian can invest in. While riding, horsemen and women must be conscious of posture, pressure release and functional movement. Today we decided to chat with Dr. Ar'neka Montford about how equestrians can best care for themselves through chiropractic care. Dr. Ar'neka was born and raised in North Carolina in a small town called Bogue. She was a multi-athlete playing softball, track and field, basketball, volleyball, and marching band. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from North Carolina State University where she discovered her path towards Chiropractic. This journey led her to Marietta, GA where she attended Life University enrolling in the Doctorate and Masters Program. 3 months into the program she met her other half Ashley, and introduced her to chiropractic. At the completion, she worked with Life U as a Sports Chiropractor for their athletic department. At the end of that contract she was looking to move out of Georgia and believed that California was calling her name so, Ashley and her packed up their house, two dogs and drove across the country to live in California. Dr. Ar'neka is excited to bring mobile chiropractic to Northern California. Dr. Ar'neka opened Resilient Spine Family and Sports Chiropractic in early 2020 after working under several successful chiropractors. She uses her experience with sports chiro and athletes to educate us on how horseback riding affects the body. During this episode, Dr. Ar'neka shares her journey to owning her own practice, how chiropractic care helps with riding and tips for equestrians to improve their riding. Chiropractic tips to improve riding: Since the inner thighs are a major muscle group used for riding, train the outer thighs off the horse to prevent muscle imbalance or strain on the knee. Practice pelvic tilt: lay on floor and tuck pelvis in (upward) to practice neutral spine and improve muscle memory Increase core strength: lay on back and put a folded towel underneath your back, engage your core forcing your back to the floor (you shouldn’t be able to remove towel) Practice breathing exercises: deep breathing will help with core strength and tension release, take 5 deep breaths and hold for 3 seconds at each inhale/exhale You can learn more about Dr. Ar'neka on her website and reach out to her on her social media pages where she posts educational videos and tutorials on how to improve your life through chiropractic care. Dr. Jason Levy is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and serves as the team chiropractor for New York Jets, New York Red Bulls and the New Jersey Devils. Dr. Levy is also the owner of the Advanced Performance and Rehabilitation Center in Short Hills, NJ. I first met Dr. Levy while I was working at Atlantic Sports Health and it didn’t take long for me to notice how hard working, caring and knowledgable Dr. Levy is. I often say that Dr. Levy is the kind of person that when he walks in the room your day immediately gets better. I have a feeling that this listening to this podcast will have the same effect. As an athlete growing up, I never would have thought to go to a chiropractor for injuries not related to the spine. In this episode of the podcast Dr. Levy debunks this myth and teaches us about the role chiropractors play in the sports medicine mix. Below are some talking points we touch on throughout the interview: The inspiration behind Dr. Levy becoming a Sports Chiropractor. Where chiropractors fit into the sports medicine mix. The similarities to physical therapists and athletic trainers and how they all work together. Importance of communication between providers. The importance of looking at the whole body and not just where it hurts. Why Dr. Levy is the busiest guy on game days. Why an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The mindset of athletes coming into his office when it comes to injury prevention. Why parents need to make sure their kids lifestyles are aligned with their athletic goals and why Fortnite might be able to help. Just because someone doesn’t have pain doesn’t mean they are in the clear. Why pro athletes are great compensators. Why getting proper sleep is important in injury recovery/prevention. The importance of patience in recovery. Addressing performance leaks. The difference between the athletes he sees (soccer, hockey, football). Dr. Levy’s role throughout the seasons with the different sports. What goes on in the locker room pre-game. Why wide receivers want the tire shine. What makes a resilient athlete. Mentors don't often walk up to you and offer their time and expertise. Guest Joey Glenn learned early on that when you are passionate about something and find someone who has been on the same path before you – make the ask! For Joey, that meant contacting the authors of a book that changed his life -- which turned into an internship that changed his life even more! In this episode of The Uncommon Life Project podcast, Joey Glenn talks about entrepreneurship, life/work balance and mentorship. He shares how the listeners can find a mentor and be a mentor. Both roles have been instrumental in Joey's life and as a result of both, he and his family have reaped rewards many times over. Hear about how Joey shaped his plan in college, how plans got altered by that book, and how having a plan plus a little bit of flexibility can be just the right combination when opportunity comes knocking. It also pays to do some knocking at opportunity's door yourself. Joey is a Sports Chiropractor and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Iowa, Joey had an opportunity to work with Core Performance/Athlete's Performance™ in Los Angeles, California helping everyday people and professional athletes reach their highest athletic potential. Joey continued his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic West and earned his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree and Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification. Joey worked for the Martinez Veterans Administration Hospital, treating our nation's heroes and completed his preceptorship treating professional athletes and weekend warriors alike at Water and Sport Physical Therapy in San Diego. After developing a passion for Olympic weightlifting, Joey obtained his USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach certification. Joey is ecstatic to return to the Midwest and share his knowledge of health, movement and athletic development in his home state. Joey is married to his lovely wife, Hannah and is the father of three children under 3 and looking forward to adopting a fourth child from Africa by the end of 2018. What you'll learn about in this episode: When it comes to entrepreneurship, if you're not scared, you're not doing it big enough Especially at the beginning of a venture, life/work balance is a huge challenge. Don't let anyone tell you differently Finding great mentors does not happen every day – when you find them, don't be afraid to ask for their help in learning Be willing to chase what matters Mentors may come and go, but learning and sharing knowledge is a life-long pursuit Transfer of wealth is not all about money – wealth is in the drive and knowledge and motivation our parents and others demonstrate for us There will be moments when you are awake at 2:00 am wondering “what have I done?” Those moments are not the last word Residual income and multiple income streams are the best kinds of portfolio diversity to have. How to find and keep good talent in a competitive job market There is always room to push the needle, do things a bit differently and differentiate yourself in the marketplace
SHOW NOTES I recently contacted the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) region director asking for an interview referral for the best person on this topic… her answer was Dr. Seth Myers. I thought it was funny he was the top suggestion because he is also a chiropractor. I thought I was going to be given the contact of someone who only does coaching. Dr. Myers didn’t disappoint. Trained under the ideals of Dr. Stuart McGill PhD, he gave some great pointers on how we can address and prevent lower back pain while squatting, deadlifting, snatching and more. Here’s some topics we hit: - Assessment - Direction of tolerance or increase symptoms and what it means - Disc and type of injuries - Outcome Measures other than pain - Butt Winking (Spinal Flexion) - Intra-abdominal pressure - Core work and why - How to return to lifting - Fear avoidance Dr. Seth Myer’s Bio: “My name is Seth Myers and I am a Sports Chiropractor practicing at JointFit Chiropractic and Sports Medicine Center in Manhattan, KS. I practice with an emphasis in evidence-based medicine and focus on active care. The treatment I provide is focused on empowering the patient and helping them navigate through musculoskeletal issues that are slowing them down in life. I have a masters degree in sports medicine and a handful of other certifications in strength and conditioning (CSCS and USAW to name a few). I have a love for sports, played football for 4 years in college and currently spend most of my spare time doing CrossFit and Olympic style weightlifting. I try to bring the knowledge and experience I have from years of lifting and working out with me in the clinic when treating patients and finding the best path for them on their road to a better lifestyle.” Contact him at sethmyersdc@gmail.com Website: https://sethmyersdc.wordpress.com Videos: Squat video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkQb2LJtLgo&t=175s (low res) http://www.backfitpro.com/documents/Spine-flexion-myths-truths-and-issues.pdf Pigs https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11114441 Sebastian’s Youtube Channel Attention Docs and Fitness Professionals: Access your client educational products, banners and posters here. In 2016 he published Amazon’s #1 Best Seller, Inside/Out Health: A Revolutionary Approach to Your Body. http://amzn.to/2hHL1re Dr. Silverman approach to medicine is to help you understand the "root cause resolution" to treating the system, not the symptom. MDs treat symptoms with drugs, holistic doctors treat the root cause by helping the body heal the system that is causing the symptoms. In our interview Dr. Silverman discusses how proper gut health can help avoid: a) auto-immune problems b) toxic liver overload c) insulin/blood sugar problems d) obesity e) musculoskeletal issues f) brain degeneration Three additional keys to health are: 1) No more sugar: Average American now consumes 152 lb/yr of sugar and children consume 34 tsp/day. High fructose corn syrup is the biggest source of calories in our diet. Sugar is a toxin and is deleterious to our health. 2) Stand- Not sit: Sitting is the new smoking. Worldwide people sit approximately 30% of their day, look at technology 41% of the time, and exercise .69% of the day. Let's stand and get moving. 3) Avoid artificial sweeteners, coloring, emulsifiers in your foods: All have negative health effects - artificial sweeteners, coloring, and emulsifiers negatively affect your gut health and blood sugar regulation.
