Ron LeFlore's trajectory from a maximum-security prison cell to starting in Major League Baseball's All-Star Game is a narrative of improbable survival and self-inflicted exile. In this episode, we sit down with Adam Henig, author of "Baseball's Outcast: The Story of Ron LeFlore", to unpack the gritty, unvarnished reality of a man who was as much a product of Detroit's turbulent East Side as he was a victim of his own choices. We explore LeFlore's early years in a one-bedroom apartment plagued by poverty , the formative trauma of losing his brother Harry — an Olympic boxer — to a ring injury, and the heroin addiction that led to the armed robbery that defined his youth. Henig takes us through the high-stakes process of documenting a life that feels more like a crime thriller than a sports biography. We discuss the "76-year-old jigsaw puzzle" Henig spent over four years piecing together through dozens of phone calls with LeFlore, despite the two never meeting in person. Henig also reveals the shadowy figures who facilitated LeFlore's rise, including Mafia associate Jimmy Karalla, who used his connections at the legendary Lindell AC bar to secure LeFlore a prison furlough for a Tiger Stadium tryout. Beyond the 30-game hitting streak and the stolen-base titles, we examine the dark side of celebrity that LeFlore could never quite outrun. Henig sheds light on LeFlore's dangerous proximity to Frank Usher and the "Murder Row" crime family, a connection that ultimately eroded the trust of the baseball establishment. Finally, we look at the sobering post-career years, from working as an airport skycap to facing the health crises that cost him his leg. This conversation offers an essential look at the heavy price of a second chance and the complicated legacy of a man who reached the heights of the game only to find himself an outcast. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOK: "Baseball's Outcast: The Story of Ron LeFlore": https://amzn.to/4vJT7pO SPONSOR THANKS: Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/
When twenty-three-year-old Ron LeFlore played his first organized baseball game, it was in a yard at the State Prison of Southern Michigan where he was serving five to fifteen years for armed robbery. An extraordinary athlete, the Detroit native had luck on his side: his coach, a convicted felon, had connections to the Detroit Tigers. Within three-and-a-half years, Ron went from a prison inmate to a Tiger centerfielder. In Baseball's Outcast: The Story of Ron LeFlore (Bloomsbury, 2026), Adam Henig tells for the first time in full the unbelievable life and career of Ron LeFlore. Blessed with blinding speed and a powerful swing, Ron shed his jailbird past to become one of the game's premiere hitters and its most dangerous base stealer during the latter half of the 1970s. His rags-to-riches life story became a bestselling book and a made-for-television movie starring actor LeVar Burton, fresh from his performance in Roots. But the good times did not last. Less than a decade after making his Major League debut, Ron was finished with baseball. Baseball's Outcast is not just another book about the rise and fall of a troubled athlete. Henig goes deeper, tracing the star player's family roots, exploring the segregated world that Ron was raised in, examining the criminal justice system he was subjected to, and revealing how childhood trauma shaped his success and downfall. Filled with insight from Ron himself, as well as from former teammates, coaches, front-office personnel, inmates, childhood friends, and relatives, Baseball's Outcast provides unprecedented access into Ron's life story and the obstacles he faced every step of the way. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book was The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All. On Revival: Hebrew Literature Between Life and Death (U Pennsylvania Press, 2024) is a critique of one of the most important tenets of Zionist thinking: "Hebrew revival," or the idea that Hebrew--a largely unspoken language before the twentieth century--was revitalized as part of a broader national "revival" which ultimately led to the establishment of the Israeli nation-state. This story of language revival has been commemorated in Israeli popular memory and in Jewish historiography as a triumphant transformation narrative that marks the success of the Zionist revolution. But a closer look at the work of early twentieth-century Hebrew writers reveals different sentiments. Roni Henig explores the loaded, figurative discourse of revival in the work of Hebrew authors and thinkers working roughly between 1890 and 1920. For these authors, the language once known as "the holy tongue" became a vernacular in the making. Rather than embracing "revival" as a neutral, descriptive term, Henig takes a critical approach, employing close readings of canonical texts to analyze the primary tropes used to articulate this aesthetic and political project of "reviving" Hebrew. She shows that for many writers, the national mission of language revival was entwined with a sense of mourning and loss. These writers perceived--and simultaneously produced--the language as neither dead nor fully alive. Henig argues that it is this figure of the living-dead that lies at the heart of the revival discourse and which is constitutive of Jewish nationalism. On Revival contributes to current debates in comparative literary studies by addressing the limitations of the national language paradigm and thinking beyond concepts of origin, nativity, and possession in language. Informed by critical literary theory, including feminist and postcolonial critiques, the book challenges Zionism's monolingual lens and the auto-Orientalism involved in the project of revival, questioning charged ideological concepts such as "native speaker" and "mother tongue." We sat down with Yale swimming's Iszac Henig, who discussed writing for the New York Times about his experience during the pandemic and, two years later, his decision to join the Yale men's team. Henig also spoke about being a subject of media attention during the 2021 - 2022 season as he raced his way to a podium finish at the 2022 Ivy League Championships and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Henig also spoke about how he approaches mental health as a trans man, goal setting as a competitive swimmer, and what he has planned after graduating and completing his swimming career later this year.
In 2021, a rising junior collegiate swimmer made a decision: Team ahead of self for a chance to complete a collective goal For Yale University sprint specialist Iszac Henig, it means going fast alongside his mates on Yale's women's swim team. With the goal of bringing an Ivy League women's team title back to New Haven for the first time since 2017. It also meant putting a critical piece of his transition on hold. 2021-2022 was as successful in the pool for Henig as it was controversial for the sport. Among those he would swim against last season was certain senior at Penn named Lia Thomas. Yes. That Lia Thomas. Through the headline clickbait, Henig swam fast and had fun, even through a difficult season of having to leave a piece of himself on hold. He ended the year with his first individual Ivy League title and became one of only three transgender student-athletes in NCAA to earn Division I conference title, and only one of three to earn All-American honors. After last season, Henig made the next choice. His senior season, would fully be his. He became part of the men's team at Yale. Karleigh Webb sits down with Henig, and takes glimpse at how this story has come full circle and the future holds for a self-described "cool dude who likes swim fast and have fun". Today we start covering the broader international initiatives that attempted to consolidate the Versailles system after WWI. The one that carried the most promise in the imagination of the world's public, if not the world's leaders, was the League of Nations. A precursor to the United Nations, it would try what had never been done before: Create an independent international body that would mediate the disputes of its members and de-escalate conflicts before a war could break out. You have a startup idea. You tell 10 friends and they all tell you it's awesome. What have you proven?Unfortunately, not much. Validating your idea requires you to go outside your building and talk to real customers. Not only that, real validation means having customers pay for your product. But how do you do that without having to build something first?Find out from Eran, the CEO of Thriver on this episode. Eran and his co-founders generated thousands of dollars in sales before writing a single line of code. By the time they started building, they knew for sure there'd be demand... because they'd already closed real customers.

Bob Henig started out as a used parts dealer and later expanded that mail order parts business to become one of the best known and longest tenured dealers in the US. It should come as no surprise, with that history and legacy, that Bob has plenty to share and some amazing stories to tell. So much so, we've split his interview into two programs. It's Bob Henig on the Airhead 247 Podcast.
