Do you despise how self-care is always presented? I do. What if there was a better way to do it? You can embrace your creative life to improve your mental self-care. So I'm not a fan of the self-care mantra. At least how it is presented on Instagram. But I do understand the need for moms to unplug and take the mental load off. That is where the creative life comes in, and you don't need to be creative to do it. If you cringe every time you think about self-care, then keeping listening. I'm going to give you practical self-care tips that aren't cringe worthy. In today's episode, Lucy, Jamie, and Avery discuss comfort zones. Comfort zones get some pretty negative press, but great things can happen when we have a comfortable place to land where we can rest and feel secure, confident, and safe. Comfort zones can be, well, comfortable, but they can also become constraining. There are drawbacks to doing things as they have always been done before. Even though it can feel scary at first, pushing ourselves beyond the comfort zone can really be exciting and fun. Because life doesn't always let us remain in our comfort zones, it is also important to get comfortable with unpredictability and the “new”. We tell some stories about when we have pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones, touch on some strategies that have helped us to manage the uncertainty and fear that come with trying new things and discuss the importance of balancing the “new” with comfortable routines. Do Try This at Home: It is important to prioritize: if you are really pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone in one way, keeping routines in other aspects of your life may really help. Being intentional about balancing discomfort to comfort can help you push through the “new”.Pay attention to where your comfort zones are and ask yourself, “do I truly feel comfortable or do I feel more ‘stuck in the mud'?” Which comfort zones are working for you and which ones get in the way?Sometimes we stay in our comfort zone because we are trying to avoid anxiety. Pay attention to whether you are unintentionally avoiding something that is important to you in an effort to avoid the anxiety that comes up when you think about trying something new.

Thank you Newsstand Studio at 1 Rockefeller Plaza for providing a place for me to record this episode for y'all! No more Brooklyn closet recording!!! You may have heard on Instagram that The Refined Collective reached 1 million downloads! This is a huge milestone and I want to CELEBRATE that with you! We have over 150 episodes from the last 3.5 years and I spent some time digging through the archives to find the most downloaded episodes ever to share with you over the next 10 weeks. If you're new to TRC, buckle up, because we have some incredible content coming your way. And if you've been here a while, hold tight, because a good refresh on this stuff never hurt! Also, while we're going through the archives, I'm going to spend some time dreaming up what's next for TRC! (And truthfully, I need a break from interviews for a bit!) But I didn't want to leave you hanging while I took a little break! So get excited, + welcome to TRC REMIX! Are you ready to revisit (or visit for the first time) the most downloaded episode on TRC history? This is Part 1 of a conversation I had been avoiding having with you guys in a solo show because I was afraid of getting it wrong or someone taking a sound bite out of context. This is a nuanced conversation with a lot of grey areas, but I didn't want fear to keep me from this dialogue. So I dove into the topic and the response was overwhelming in the best way. Now let's dive back in! Here's what I won't do: Tell you what to do. Give you a script to regurgitate to yourself and others to justify any of your actions. Shame or judge you for your past or your current decisions. Try to fix you or convince you of anything. What I hope to do: Point you to Jesus, Scripture, and nuance. Normalize a healthy conversation around sex, sexuality, desire, and yes— masturbation The word alone can feel shame inducing, right? How many times do you say ‘masturbation' out loud on a regular basis? God is not ashamed of our sexual desire and sexuality—he created it (Genesis 1: 26-31). Give you tools to equip you to navigate your faith, values, and a dialogue around masturbation. Don't take my word for it—I'm not God. This is where I am at after close to 7 years of researching, praying, doubting, trial and error, and tough conversations. God created you with a mind—use it! Finally, it's ok if we don't see eye to eye—we can still love, respect, and honor one another even if we come to different conclusions. My Personal Story: Before we move forward with vision and walk out today with clarity, we have to be willing to look backwards: how, why, and through what means did we get here? Home: ‘It's okay to masturbate.' School: Silence. Friends: Silence, masked conversations, and shame. Culture: ‘Do what feels good.' Church: All wrong, all the time, shut down your desire until marriage—only guys struggle with sexual desire. 4 Questions to Ask Yourself What do you currently believe about masturbation and why? What were you taught about masturbation at home, school, from friends, culture, and church? Where and how were those beliefs formed? Are those sexual scripts/beliefs rooted in fear or freedom? Identify the shame agenda + the Jesus agenda. The Big ‘O': The Power of the Orgasm When we orgasm, dopamine and oxytocin are released in a surge in our bodies. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released from the reward center part of our brain associated with pleasure. Oxytocin is a feel-good hormone. One of its sole purposes is to create deep bonds between people. This is like “soul ties.” The Harem Within: C.S. Lewis “For me the real evil of masturbation would be that it takes an appetite which, in lawful use, leads the individual out of himself…and turns it back: sends the man back into the prison of himself, there to keep a harem of imaginary brides. And this harem, once admitted, works against his ever getting out and really uniting with a real woman. For the harem is always accessible, always subservient, calls for no sacrifices or adjustments, and can be endowed with erotic and psychological attractions which no real woman can rival. Among those shadowy brides he is always adored, always the perfect lover: no demand is made on his unselfishness, no mortification ever imposed on his vanity. In the end, they become merely the medium through which he increasingly adores himself . . . .After all, almost the main work of life is to come out of our selves, out of the little, dark prison we are all born in. Masturbation is to be avoided as all things are to be avoided which retard this process. The danger is that of coming to love the prison”[1] My pleasure is #1 priority Ephesians 5: Respect our husbands and husbands to serve their wives like Christ served the church. Our sexual experiences with our spouses should be outward focused, let's serve each other—not ‘I'm feeling turned on, get me off, and then roll over.' Ends on self Sexuality = desire for ‘o' others. Gets us outside of our heads and into relationship/community with others. No iron sharpens iron here folks Conflict resolution. Mirrors of each other. Constant growth. “Brides always adored” or “yes men.” FANTASY LAND: Loving the prison more than real life I don't want to get so good at getting myself off that I don't need another person. 91% of millennials masturbate (19 and 36 for SKYN's 2018 Millennial Sex Survey, and found that 91 percent of respondents masturbated.) 2015—Pornhub site: 60% of its users were millennials. Compartmentalized and scratching an itch that we don't need to/want to take the risk of being in a relationship and dating. Avoiding: heartbreak, awkwardness, conflict, rejection. Is this why so many of us in the church are single? We're getting just enough of our “itches” scratched that the risk of truly putting ourselves out there to be in a relationship is not worth it? Don't worry, I won't leave you hanging. Process what we've just gone through today and get ready for Part 2 coming next Wednesday. In the meantime, journal through the questions I ask above under “4 Questions to Ask Yourself.” Make sure you're subscribed to the podcast so the next episode will download straight to your devices!! They give awards to people who create relevant, science-based content and speak to their audience about health and wellness with empathy and authenticity. They awarded 100 influential people in the wellness industry, including Rosie. Body Positivity in the Time of a Pandemic Rachel has worked in the healthcare system and is an expert on eating disorders and mental health. During this crisis, people should not feel ashamed of eating more or unhealthily due to the limited food available to us. Eating can help people cope with some of the mental health issues triggered by the pandemic and isolation. Social media is a great tool to communicate with people while in quarantine. But it can also induce envy since more are tuning in to social media to fill their time. People on social media are more understanding of the things that truly matter now. But it's still important to limit your screen time. For People Without Company While in Quarantine Emotional eating is a natural way to self-soothe. It only becomes a problem when it's your only coping mechanism. It's essential to expand your coping strategies and balance things out. Reach out to your friends through social media apps. To have some sense of control and connection, you can donate to charities and virtual organizations helping out in this crisis. On Overeating During Quarantine Rachel reminds people that there are no good or bad foods. If you label something as bad, you may end up depriving yourself of that food and compensate later on. If your emotional eating is getting out of hand, expand your coping mechanisms and practice acceptance. Take things in moderation and find nutritional balance. Eat enough to avoid overeating. If you fail today, remember that you can do the next right thing. On Zoom Fatigue People with Zoom fatigue feel that they need to be present all the time and project themselves more through the screen. It can be stressful for some people. Rachel is also having a hard time paying attention after a certain point during Zoom meetings. Remember to stay focused, engaged, and connected. Recharging Your Energy While at Home It's vital to recharge during the quarantine. People are having a hard time balancing their personal and professional lives while working from home. During this time, Rachel meditates to clear her head and maintain mindfulness. How to Stop Pressuring Yourself During Quarantine Not all people have the same time during the quarantine. You don't have to pressure yourself to learn skills if it does not apply to your situation. Acknowledge your emotions and do not shame yourself for not doing more in this new normal. Be compassionate to yourself. Hope After COVID-19 Rachel hopes we will hold some of the principles we learned in this crisis and create the needed changes rather than going back to the way it was before. She hopes people will slow down a little bit, realize what's important, and be more mindful of others' well-being. Focusing on What You Want to Create for Your Life Rachel became a dietitian because she wanted to help people become healthier. She enjoys creating personal connections with people by putting helpful articles on the Internet. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “For the record, emotional eating is not wrong or a bad thing. I think the culture has made it like, ‘Oh, you shouldn't eat out of emotion only if out of hunger,’ when the truth of the matter is that it's a totally natural way to self-soothe." “When you label something as bad, you end up depriving yourself of that food. You avoid it; you might be more likely to overeat it later on.” “If you constantly are overcompensating, you're going to overcompensate later on.” “Just by acknowledging that you have these emotions and not shaming ourselves for not doing more with this new normal is really important.” "The world's going to change, and I would only hope that it's for the better and we're more mindful of everyone else's well-being too, not just our own.” About Rachel Rachel Berman is the general manager of the Verywell Fit website, which produces content about holistic well-being. Important Events 1676 On December 23, 1675, King Charles II issued a proclamation suppressing Coffee Houses in England. The edict lasted 16 days. The public response was so negative that he revoked it on this day, January 8, 1676. 1823 Today is the birthday of the British naturalist Alfred Wallace. Wallace developed his theory of natural selection quite independently of Charles Darwin - although he did send his theory to Darwin. Wallace’s work prompted Darwin to get serious about publishing his 20-year-old idea. In 1858, both Wallace and Darwin’s work was presented to the Linnaean Society. Wallace published a remarkable book called The Malay Archipelago. The book is considered a classic and covers the flora, fauna, and folks native to the area - now known as Malaysia and Indonesia. Wallace wrote, "Nature seems to have taken every precaution that these, her choicest treasures, may not lose value by being too easily obtained." Wallace has been obscured by Darwin over the course of history. Yet, when he died at the age of 91, his obituaries praised him as an extraordinary figure. One obituary said, "He was one of the greatest and brightest and clearest thinkers of his age...of one thing I am certain, and that is that never has anybody come more fully within my favorite description of a great man, namely, that 'he is a combination of the head of a man and the heart of a boy.'” A forthcoming children's book about Wallace is titled Darwin's Rival: Alfred Russel Wallaceand the search for evolution by Christian Dorian. 1945 Today is the anniversary of the death of the Dutch conservationist and botanist Jac P Thijsse. Jac founded the Society for the Preservation of Nature Monuments in Holland. His 60th birthday present was a wildlife garden in Bloemendaal near Haarlem. After WWI, a Dutch food company by the name of Verkade (vare-Kah-dah) ask Jac to create some album books on the Flora of the Netherlands. Essentially, the books became a collector series Album with empty spots for photo cards, which were distributed individually with the biscuits. The Dutch would buy their biscuits, and then they would place the card in the space designed for it in the book. These albums were quite trendy among the Dutch and today sell for hundreds to thousands of dollars apiece today on auction websites. Today in the Netherlands, there is a college named after Jac, and he always makes the top 100 Dutchman's list. 1985 Today is the anniversary of the death of conservationist and plantsman Harold Hillier. In 1864, Hilliard's grandfather Edwin began the family Nursery. His son was supposed to take over the family business, but he died during the war, and so it fell to Edwin's grandson Herald to continue his legacy. Harold immediately set about creating a public garden and arboretum alongside the nursery. The site was already home to some magnificent trees - some of which were at least 200 years old. In an article from 2019, it was revealed that the Hillier Arboretum is home to the largest collection of Champion Trees in all of Britain and Ireland with a whopping total of 611 followed by Kew Garden with 333 Champion Trees. Champion Trees fit into three categories being either the largest, the finest, or the rarest of their species. Today the Hillier Nursery is putting together a Champion Tree Trail throughout the Arboretum so that visitors can walk to each of the Champion tree specimens. Among some of the Champion Trees are specimen eucalyptus from Australia, rare pine trees from Mexico, and Sequoias from North America. The Hillier Arboretum really began as a propagation holding place for the nursery. If a tree needed to be propagated, the nursery workers would just go out to the Arboretum and take a scion wood or seeds from the tree there. Similarly, if the nursery received some incredible rootstock or seed, they would sell most of it but hold some back for the Arboretum. Today the 180-acre Arboretum is entirely separate from the nursery, and it features about 42,000 plants across 1200 taxa. the Arboretum features 11 National Plant Collections and has magnificent specimens of witch hazel and oak. Hillier died just six days after his 80th birthday. Harold spent his entire life working to save rare and endangered trees and shrubs from Extinction. In 1978 he gifted the Hillier Arboretum with thousands of specimens in plants. When asked by a reporter for his opinion on plant conservation, Hillier famously replied, "While others are talking about it, I am doing it, roots in the ground, planting, planting, planting." Unearthed Words Today’s Unearthed Words are incredible and unforgettable onliners about January. January brings the snow, Makes our feet and fingers glow. — Sara Coleridge, English author "Come, ye cold winds, at January's call, On whistling wings, and with white flakes bestrew The earth." — John Ruskin, an English art critic, and thinker "Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius." — Pietro Aretino (“Pee-et-tro Air-ah-TEE-no”), Italian author O, wind, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? — Percy Bysshe Shelley, Romantic poet In seed-time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy. — William Blake, English poet When one reads a poem in January, it is as lovely as when one goes for a walk in June. — Jean-Paul Friedrich Richter, German writer "Nothing is as easy to make as a promise this winter to do something next summer; this is how commencement speakers are caught." — Sydney J. Harris, Chicago Journalist Grow That Garden Library Houseplants by Lisa Steinkopf The resurgent interest in houseplants is due primarily to Millennials who are filling every nook and cranny in their homes with houseplants. Those smart millennials! If you (like so many millennials) are filling your house with houseplants - especially during the winter season when they add so much - humidity, green, a touch of the outdoors, and clean air. One of the things I appreciated the most about Lisa’s book is that she divided the 125 houseplants featured in her book into three helpful categories - Easy to Grow, Moderately Easy-to-Grow, and Don’t-Try-This-at-Home-It’s-A-Waste-of-Money-and-Time-and-You-Really-Need-That-New-Pair-of-Shoes. Just kidding. It’s actually just called Challenging to Grow. (Which doesn’t sound so bad now, does it? Still - be careful here.) Now, guess which one Lisa and I spent the most time talking about when we chatted a while back? You’re right, again - the easy-to-grow category. Why? Because that’s where the sweet spot is. These plants give the best return on investment of your time and money. These are also the plants that will provide you with the most personal satisfaction. Here’s what you are going to love about Lisa’s book: she’s down-to-earth, and she’s a conscious competent - she knows how to teach houseplants to anyone (even those without green thumbs!) I’m also betting she must be an incredibly wonderful mom and wife because her understanding family has made room for over 1,000 houseplants thriving under Lisa’s care and supervision. This book came out in 2017. You can get a used copy of Houseplants by Lisa Steinkopf and support the show, using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for under $14. Great Gifts for Gardeners Coloring Fibonacci in Nature by Art Therapy Lab Assembled here is a collection of outline illustrations inspired by the Fibonacci number sequence found in nature. They appear everywhere in nature, from the leaf arrangement in plants to the pattern of the florets of a flower, the bracts of a pinecone, or the chambers of a nautical shell. Today’s Botanic Spark 1892 Today is the birthday of the agricultural botanist and plant wizard Walter Tennyson Swingle. Swingle was a very popular botanist during his lifetime. He made the news for several remarkable achievements in the world of horticulture. He introduced the Date Palm to California. He created many new citruses through hybridizing. In 1897, Swing made the first man-made cross of a Bowen grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine in Eustis, Florida. In 1909, Swingle created the limequat, a cross between the key lime and the kumquat. That same year, Swingle created the Citrangequat, which is a trigeneric citrus hybrid of a citrange and a kumquat. Swingle developed the Citrange, a combination of the sweet orange and the trifoliate orange. He was attempting to breed an orange tree that could withstand colder weather. Swingle was born in Pennsylvania. His family quickly moved to Kansas, where he was home-schooled and ultimately educated at Kansas State Agricultural College. In short order, Swingle began working for the government at the United States Bureau of Plant Industry in the Department of Agriculture. The USDA immediately put him to work, sending him to nearly every country in the world. Swingle brought Egyptian Cotton to Arizona and Acala Cotton to California. However, Swingle's most significant accomplishment was the introduction of the Date Palm to America. The Date Palm was something swingle discovered during a visit to Algeria. Swingle was intelligent and observant, and he noticed that the climate and soil in Algeria mirrored that of California. Swingle was optimistic about the Date Palm's chances in California right from the get-go, writing: “No heat is too great and nor air too dry for this remarkable plant, which is actually favored by a rainless climate and by hot desert winds. It is also shown that the date palm can withstand great quantities of alkali in the soil- more than any other useful plant…It is probably the only profitable crop that can succeed permanently.’ When the Date Palm arrived in California, the Coachella Valley was identified as the perfect spot to grow them. By 1920, over a hundred thousand pounds of dates were grown in California. Today, Dates are one of California's main exports. The total value of the Date crop is approaching $100 million every single year.

In this episode, I finish my prior interview with world traveling woman/worldschooling momma, Lainie Liberti. Find out more about Lainie and her wordschooling resources at her website: www.raisingmiro.com (Music: www.bensound.com) 00:00: Opening Preparing for Life via the Experience of Travel What he’s really learned is how to problem solve - how to advocate for himself - teamwork - responsibility. Not because these were lessons that we created and said ‘here open up a workbook and figure this out’ it’s because those are the lessons of real life and they were in context. - Lainie There’s arts, culture language learning. There's geology, geography, agriculture. Astronomy. Everything is interwoven and tied into the experiences were having as we're exploring new cultures. - Lainie Context is what anchors the learning into a child. Let me be immersed in the experience and I will absorb it. -Stacey What It’s like Being in Other Cultures (Hint: It Starts in the Home) A lot of the fear based programming are not a part of our realities anymore. The moment that we started to connect to people, loosen our grip, look people in the eye and smiling and connect, and even though we don't speak the same language were both human. We both want the same things we both want happiness and health. That kind of understanding broke down those ideas, fear, the programming that was not my messages or words. I eventually felt that people everywhere were just like me. We had more in common than we had differences. - lAINIE Personal Experiences and Stories of Human Kindness - Conversations with Syrian Refugee, a Jehovah's Missionary, and an Ex Prisoner When you have to bring healing to someone in your family that's had a negative experience - to help them not to judge ALL by then ONE (and still validate the negativity of that experience and help them walk through) it confronts that thing inside us that goes wow - I had a negative experience and that's caused me to label a whole certain group of people this way and now im confronted to examine that too as I help my son to examine that as well. - Stacey Just because you had a negative experience - there’s an important moment to rest yourself and still be open to the goodness that's possible in the next experience. - Stacey The world is made of individual and we always must keep our eye on hat. People do good things and people do bad things - doesn't mean that cultures are good or cultures are bad, doesn't mean that people are good or people are bad - its the actions that were responding to. We need to keep this perspective straight and not so easily fall into racism, or anything else that is damaging to our humanity. - Lainie When we judge against a culture or whole people group we then close ourselves to the goodness that exists in the people from that place or culture. - Stacey Fostering Independence with the Partnership Paradigm We function on a basis on consensus. The first step of learning independence and experiencing independence is learning how to advocate for yourself. And underst that when you're advocating for yourself there is a consideration of how that affects the whole community. - Lainie Advice to the Person That Wants to Begin (Hint: It Starts in the Home) It’s very easy to maintain the drudgery of your day to day life. I read a quote recently that really spoke to me: “Travel is the adventure that takes the taste of bitterness out of your soul.” I know that sometimes a good by product of a traveling experience is that it can bring about a healing and a joy and a revitalization of what you're here to do and what's truly important. - Stacey Tapping the Humanitarian in Lainie - The Cult of Scarcity We tend to live with this idea that there is not enough. That there is scarcity. That we have to work harder to get what's ours because somebody next to us may take it. That is what drives us from not being present in our own lives. The idea that there’s not enough creates more fear. It separates us from the needs and preferences. If we realize that we do have enough, that there IS enough, that what we have is just perfect for this moment, it’ll stop that cult of scarcity. It'll stop us from being separated from one another. Separation is the problem. - Lainie Probably the greatest illusion that we have in our society and humanity is that were separated, when were really together. Were really united by some divine and universal thread. - Stacey The shift is becoming in service to others. That’s the remedy. - Lainie How to find Lainie: Raising Miro on the Road of Life Global Education through World Travel http://www.raisingmiro.com Project World School Inspiring Temporary Learning Communities for Teens & Young Adults Check out the 2017 Schedule Now! http://ProjectWorldSchool.com Watch our TEDx talk called Making The World Our Classroom For the Love of Learning - Voices of the Alternative Education Movement Host- Weekly talk show broadcasting on CCN Monday 8-10pm EST http://ForTheLoveofLearningShow.com
