We're kicking off the minor threes with OUR favorite, the wands. In the Waite Smith deck, a figure looks over the water to see the ships. And apparently, they have a fanny pack (and jaymi says it's full of snacks). Hilary looks at the card and sees it as a stepping stone moment. Look out to the horizon (big picture) and yet take care of details. Melissa says we can't do this alone. There's teamwork between this figure (Kevin) and the ships in the water. Jaymi says it's time to put the plan into motion and ensure you have enough energy to carry it through. Homework: Make your friendship bracelets. Grab a fanny pack and fill it with your favorite snacks to enjoy by the campfire. We slingers are hungry. Is anyone else hungry for snacks now? Deck's Mentioned Jaymi: Deviant Moon Tarot (mini edition) by Patrick Valenzia, (Link goes to the large, borderless tarot); snacks are chocolate cake donuts or Sea Salt Mochi Rice Bites. Hilary: Mystic Dreamer by Heidi Darras and Barbara Moore; snacks are Yodel's. Melissa: The Sasuraibito Tarot by Stasia Burrington; snacks Little Debbie's Unicorn Cakes. We're taking a deeper dive into polyvagal theory & co-regulation because understanding our nervous system can aid in managing moments of panic or stress. Inside the episode:Polyvagal theory, proposed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges, simplifies the nervous system's response to threats into three states: fight, flight, and freeze. Unlike the common four-state model, which includes faun, freeze, and variations of fight or flight, Polyvagal theory focuses on these three primary states. Co-regulation, where calm signals from trusted individuals alleviate threat responses, is another method we can use to help get our brains and bodies back online. In professional settings, trusted colleagues or managers serve as co-regulators. Lack of co-regulation contributes to feelings of isolation and heightened stress in workplaces. When co-regulation isn't immediately available, individuals can employ retrospective techniques, recalling moments of safety and creativity to soothe their nervous systems. These practices, documented in an "SOS note," aid in re-regulation and problem-solving. Notably, the urge to rush through soothing processes impedes progress. Adhering to Phil Dunphy's adage from Modern Family— "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast"—advocates for a deliberate, unhurried approach to achieving a calm, creative state conducive to problem-solving Homework: Make a SOS note.Think about that relaxed state where creativity has come to you. What were you doing? What were the conditions for this? Write that down so you can reference it when things are bad so you don't have to try and figure out how to feel better in that moment.

Whether you're daunted by the prospect of failure or success, homesteading fears can be REAL. I received a thought-provoking question from a Facebook follower and I couldn't resist talking about this topic right away (because I think it hits home for all of us). In this episode, I explore the complex emotions that come with change – from the unsettling fear of failure to the surprising apprehension of success, and even the daunting impostor syndrome. Why does success sometimes scare us as much as failure? Let's confront these fears head-on. What happens when our worst fears come to life? This episode isn't just about homesteading – it's about growth, resilience, and the courage to face our fears. Homework: Make the lists of fears you either had starting out or still have, then make a list of your fears once you get started? Take time to let them sink in and truly think about whats worse. I don't think you will struggle to make your dreams come true if you look at the alternatives. Welcome to part 5 of our Mind Hacks Series, where Charlie shares how to begin designing effective rituals to help you achieve your goals. Charlie explains that rituals train the brain to allow the action to become conditioned into your brain so it becomes automatic- so automatic so it takes no energy, and you don't have to exert discipline to do it. Charlie emphasizes the importance of understanding the cue, which is the most critical piece to understanding habits. He explains that when the cue gets triggered, it automatically cues the next behavior, and the next- it's all one network. Charlie discusses: -Habits have three components: the cue, the routine, and the reward. -By controlling the trigger, (or the cue,) you can change your life. -How to design effective cues by identifying a structured action you already do all the time and use it as a trigger to the new habit. -How to do the routine next to the thing that will trigger it it because then your brain will start to associate the two. -That many negative behaviors stem from triggers, so it's essential to avoid those triggers. Homework:Make a list of things in your life that are built in structure that can be used as triggers, such as waking up, brushing teeth, making coffee, sitting down at your desk, and pulling into the driveway. __________ Thanks for listening, sharing, tagging, and reviewing! Losing weight requires you to break the habit of overeating. Like any other habit you've ever broken, you'll need to follow a few steps in order to allow the habit to extinguish and replace it with a different response/behavior that also meets your needs. The first step to breaking the habit of overeating is to become aware of when, how often, and the physical and emotional environment in which overeating occurs. So you are aware of when you can interrupt the overeating habit cycle from playing out. Step 2: You'll need to make a plan ahead of time of things you can do or not do when you think you want to eat but you are not physically hungry. Homework: Make a list of as many situations/triggers as you can think of that in which you know you eat for comfort or relief. Note the environment, too. Is it a delayed response? Were you alone? Step 3: What do I think eating will give me right now? Can you identify the feeling you believe eating will give you? Your habit of overeating is trying to tell you something about what is needed in your life. Use this inquiry process to uncover that need that you believe eating is meeting. Then get to work meeting those needs directly. Weight loss requires you to support yourself differently than you've been used to. Your work is to develop a new relationship with your life to meet your needs directly and in integrity with who you are becoming. Step 4: Learn how to feel your feelings. If you are a conduit for feeling, your feelings can give you a skillset of insight that lets you know more clearly what is needed in your life. I will teach you this skill in Episode 14.Visit me @thriveinmidlife on Instagram on the episode 13 post and comment with your ah-ha's, takeaways, homework and/or questions from this episode and let's keep the conversation going. These, along with a "milking the cows" mentality (it didn't matter if you were tired, in a bad mood or a relative had just died, the cows still had to be milked) created strong mental health habits and a solid sense of purpose. Linda went from milking cows to waiting tables as she worked her way through college where she earned her Undergraduate and Graduate degrees in Home Economics and Secondary Education. She taught in the public school system for ten years. During that time, she started her own in-home business and, over the next 38 years, built a multi-million dollar sales organization both nationally and internationally. Linda has trained tens of thousands of businesswomen around the globe in life and business skills. She is the mother of two and grandmother of two.

In the context of offering a relationship with Himself (living water and right worship) Jesus interrupts the flow of the conversation and basically says, "Let's talk about your sex life!" He uses the sexual history of our spunky Samaritan Woman to expose her need for this living water. Of all the encounters with people, I cannot think of another similar event where Jesus went right at someones zipper. He says that sex is for marriage. He says that "having another" is reserved for the garden of marriage. He says that He is Lord of marriage. He says that this is under his purview. He says specifically to her that He sees, He knows, and yes, He has kept count. The question is, HAS SHE? And of course, HAVE I? Homework: Make a complete list of every person you have taken sexual pleasure from outside the beautiful boundaries of marriage. Don't forget to include the physical, the visual, and the mental. Like her, WHO CAN STAND? Do I agree with God on this? Do I agree with the perceiving? The exposing of her zipper history gives her the opportunity to agree with God (repentance) and then expose it to the living water that Jesus is offering. She needs a savior here. So do we. Share this podcast with someone who has done a poor job with their zipper history.

Who thinks weekends should be for recharging and not housework? While the end result is awesome, cleaning the house isn’t exactly fun. Today we’re talking to a guest instructor with a strategy for ditching the weekend-long cleaning marathons and the Monday thru Friday chaos. Becky Rapinchuk, also known as Clean Mama, has been sharing her time-saving cleaning routine online since 2009. Her quest is to simplify everyday life and show her readers and followers how to get the cleaning done quickly and safely, so they can enjoy the things that matter. Her ideas and tips have been featured in Real Simple, Martha Stewart magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, and many others. Becky believes your clean home is just a daily task away- and we are here for it! By the end of this class you’ll have an understanding of The Clean Mama routine, some awesome home-keeping tips and ideas for making your home feel cozy and clean! What do you think is the biggest cause of overwhelm when it comes to maintaining a home? People like to be told what to do sometimes. It's overwhelming when you don't know where to start. Why do you suggest a cleaning routine? You waste a lot of time looking around for the biggest messes. Instead of being reactive, you'll know exactly what you need to do daily. What does your routine look like? Daily Tasks: Make beds, check floors, counters, clutter, laundry. Weekly Tasks: M- bathroom, T- dusting, W- vacuuming, Th- floor washing, F- catch-all, S-sheets and towels. Rotating Tasks: Clean appliances, floor boards, windows, comforters etc. Monthly Focus: Each month has a different focus, like paperwork or decluttering for example. How much time do you devote to these daily tasks? 15-20 mins. Let’s talk about the tools for the job. Which products do you love to use? Here is her favorite page off her website! Microfiber towels Microfiber duster A good vacuum with a HEPA filter. Becky's favorite vacuum is THIS ONE How do you avoid a stinky vacuum? Clean it out really well! Use a cotton ball and drop some essential oils on it, then drop it in the tank. What do you suggest people avoid when buying cleaning products? Bleach Most conventional cleaners because of all of the chemicals Dryer sheets (use wool dryer balls instead and vinegar as fabric softener) How do you get bad smells out of your sink? Sometimes you need a professional if there's something in your trap or a bad connection with your dishwasher, so make sure that's not the case. If you think it's food, put a couple ice cubes, dish soap and/or baking soda down the drain. What do you suggest for cleaning toilets/grout with toddler boys!? Cream of tarter paste and an old toothbrush. Put it on the grout, let it sit a couple minutes and wipe it clean. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar will also cut the smell. THIS lime enzyme all natural cleaner. How often do you replace sponges? Throw them in the dishwasher at night at least once a week, and you can do so until they start to deteriorate. How do you clean your makeup brushes? Use a silicone mat like this one. HOMEWORK: Make a nightly sink scrub: 2 cups of baking soda, essential oils (clove and lemon is great) then add a squirt of dish soap and scrub with a sponge or a dish brush and rinse. Make your bed every day! FIND BECKY! So this episode is a little different :) A while back I was contacted by Lisimba Pink who hosts his very own podcast. I was super excited to hear that he wanted to feature me, and chat about what I've achieved with Titus, and my own entrepreneurial journey to date. I really enjoyed chatting with Lisimba, and felt there were some useful pointers in my own story to share with everyone. I've kindly 'borrowed' Lisimba's show notes and details below for you to refer to. Hope you enjoy! Scripture: Matthew 5:17-48 Homework: Make a kindgom ID. Using a PostIt note or something similar, write out one or all of the words of our God-given identity affirmed at baptism: loved, chosen, and delightful. Put that ID somewhere you will see it and/or feel it, such as on your mirror, on your computer, in your pocket or on your dashboard. You might also want to make an ID for someone that is in need of remembering it, or perhaps someone whom you are having a loving. Good luck! Have a great week!
Scriptures: James 4:1-12 Homework: Make a specific goal of practicing courageous love in one relationship. Rather than thinking of this as a New Year's resolution for the year, try to hone your efforts to one relationship. Maybe it's a relative or coworker. Maybe it's someone who pushes you out of your comfort zone in the direction of challenging love. Whatever the relationship is, love bodly and with great courage. Happy New Year!!!
Kelley and Michael stay up all night to bring you this 4th installment of MHMG Learning Annex: Go Meet ALL the PEOPLE! Sweden has got some 'splaining to do as they drop to number 4 in downloads and I exit the world of RPG for the foreseeable future, but end up creating an Urban Nightlife LARP (patent pending, patent pending, patent pending). There is bitching about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we make our predictions about how awesome Dragon Age: Inquisition is going to be, and Michael explains to me why Alistair never took off his necklace when we had Dragon Age Sexy Times! Tables get flipped over women wearing makeup, Reddit being butthurt over it (Reddit, butthurt? You don't say), and a table-flip teaser for our next episode topic. Homework: Make an effort to go somewhere new (or to a special event at an old haunt) and meet some new people. Join a club or group that has regular fun meetings. The idea is to expand your friend/acquaintance base. They don’t have to all be potential dates - make friends with people of all genders and types, because this connects you to new networks of people you might not otherwise have access to. For our 20th season, we are focusing on your toolbox. We're going to be thinking about tools in terms of the lenses that we use to approach a story. We're going to focus on the four lenses of: who, where, when, and why (don't worry– what and how will be looked at in a later season, since they're more about execution and less about lenses.) Our hosts talk about the lenses they're adopting as they look towards 2025. At the end of this season, we're going to take all these lenses and apply them to one work: All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders. A note: we will now only have “thing of the week” occasionally, and not regularly! Homework: Make a list of the tools you already have in your toolbox. Now, as an intention, think of an area that you want a tool for. Over the course of this year, we're going to try to help you find that tool. This week, we're continuing our conversation about the lens of who. On last week's episode we talked about a character's motivation and goals. Now, we're starting to think about tension in the form of a character's stakes and fears. The fears that a character has and the stakes that they face create the story that exists around them. These tensions also help move them through the story. So, how can you use stakes and fears to start– and build– your story? The answer may surprise you. Hint: you may not want to open with your character dangling off a cliff. Homework: Make a list of all the major fears that your main character has. Take your MC (main character), and draw a map of all the characters that your MC is connected to. Now, describe those relationships in one sentence or less. Now, compare this list of relationships with the list of fears. See if these two lists are in conversation with each other. Are they supporting each other or are they completely disconnected? If they are disconnected, start thinking about how you could bring these two lists closer together to establish a feedback loop between relationships and fears. P.S. Or, The Business of the End of Schlock MercenaryHow did Howard start making money from his hobby of drawing and writing comics? How did he self-publish? We have a special guest on this episode! Sandra Tayler—Howard's wife, the editor and publisher for Schlock Mercenary, and a published author—talks about starting their business. We dive into uncertainty, quality of life, and “manic optimism.” We learn about how to use pre-ordering, PayPal, and Kickstarter. Howard also shares about his experience with long covid, how to generate multiple income streams, and what comes next. Homework: Make a plan for how to monetize one aspect of your work. Start thinking like Sandra! This could be submitting a short story for publication or making a plan to submit your novel or making a plan for a paid newsletter. It doesn't have to be something you do today or tomorrow, but start thinking about what you can be doing to make this creative work part of your future income. Prepare for our next Deep Dive with Host Erin Roberts (starting next week)! Read Erin's short stories: Wolfy Things, Sour Milk Girls, Snake Season. Note: these stories involve some darker themes. All of these short stories are available for free online and also have audio versions available.
