Welcome back to the Empower Her Business Accelerator podcast! I'm your host, Philippa Channer, and we're continuing our April deep dive into content pillars. Last week in Episode 174, we explored how to define your content pillars and set the foundation for a focused, strategic marketing approach. If you missed that one, go ahead and give it a listen—it's the perfect lead-in to what we're diving into today. Because having clear content pillars is great… but how do you make sure those pillars are actually working for your business? That's exactly what we're unpacking in Episode 175: how to align your content pillars with your business goals so your content doesn't just look good—it drives real results. Your Content Should Do More Than Engage It should perform. If you're pouring time and energy into content but still feel like your business isn't growing, it might be because your content isn't aligned with what you're really trying to achieve. This week, I walk you through 5 essential steps to ensure that every piece of content you create supports your goals—whether that's growing your list, boosting your visibility, or increasing sales. Here's a breakdown of what we covered: (01:00) Why Alignment Matters Your content pillars should be the foundation of your strategy—but they also need to tie directly to your goals. When that alignment is missing, you end up with scattered messaging and wasted effort. (02:00) Step 1: Identify Your Business Goals Start by revisiting your current goals. Do you want to drive more leads? Boost brand visibility? Increase course sales? Every pillar should have a direct connection to these goals. ✨ Action Step: Write down your top 3 business goals and brainstorm how content could help achieve each one. (03:00) Step 2: Audit Existing Content for Alignment Take a look at what you've already created. Is it helping move the needle—or just taking up space? ✨ Action Step: Do a quick content audit. Categorize your existing pieces by pillar and see which ones tie to your goals. (03:45) Step 3: Create Goal-Focused Content Pillars For each pillar, develop ideas that serve a clear business objective. ✨ Action Step: For example, if “female entrepreneurship” is one of your pillars and your goal is to sell a coaching program, create content that addresses common struggles your clients face—then tie it back to your program. (04:00) Step 4: Incorporate Strong Calls to Action (CTAs) Every piece of content should tell your audience what to do next. Whether that's signing up, booking a call, or downloading a resource—give them a next step. ✨ Action Step: Review your recent content and make sure each one includes a goal-driven CTA. (05:00) Step 5: Measure and Adjust Finally, track what's working. If a pillar isn't driving results, it may be time to switch up the format or messaging. ✨ Action Step: Use analytics tools to monitor engagement, traffic, and conversions—and adjust as needed. Quote of the Week: "Creating content without alignment is like shouting into the void—it might get attention, but it won't get results." Let that sink in.

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount
Why Salespeople are Afraid to Ask for the Sale

Sales Gravy: Jeb Blount

On the surface, you'd think that “selling” and “asking” go hand in hand. In reality, salespeople at all experience levels often hesitate, tiptoe around, or dodge direct closes because they're afraid of rejection, worried about coming across as pushy, or insecure about asking. On this episode of the Sales Gravy Podcast, Jeb Blount explores why salespeople fear asking for the sale and what to do about it with author and Sales Gravy University instructor, Tony Morris  Every salesperson starts somewhere. Tony Morris started turning a profit buying 10 pounds of sweets from a shop and selling them for 20 pounds. Before that, he sold car washing door to door. But before all that, he spent hours watching his father prep for sales calls in the mirror, honing his language and mastering his message. It drove home one idea for a young Tony: To be a sales success, you have to practice, practice, practice learning how to ask for the sale.  The Fear Factor That Holds Salespeople Back From Asking for the Sale There's an underlying, deeply human factor that derails many capable sales professionals: The fear of asking for the sale. Rejection stings, whether it's a “no” from a potential client or crickets after your presented a proposal you believed was bulletproof.  We fear hearing “no” because we interpret it, consciously or not, as a sign that our competence or worth is lacking. Ironically, the more empathetic and relationship-focused a salesperson is, the more they tend to shy away from scenarios that might lead to an uncomfortable refusal. When you allow the fear of rejection for creep in when attempting to close the sales it often leads to: Hesitation: You wait for the buyer to “signal” readiness, rather than proactively closing. Defensiveness: If a conversation veers toward potential objections, you steer away or gloss over critical next steps. Over-Explaining: To avoid a direct ask, you bury the buyer in details, hoping they'll volunteer a “yes.” Practice Is the Key to Asking Confidently for the Sale Watch any top performer in any field—a pro golfer, a concert pianist, or an elite salesperson—and they often make it look effortless. People assume they were simply “born with it.” In truth, consistent practice is usually the reason they're able to operate at such a high level without appearing scripted or nervous. One reason salespeople hesitate to ask for the sale is that they don't feel comfortable with what to say—or how to say it—when the conversation reaches its critical moment. Practice, especially under realistic conditions, engrains talk tracks, responses to objections, and emotional composure. Practice allows you to lean on muscle memory rather than fumbling for words or panicking at a curveball question or objection. The more you prepare, the more comfortable you are in the moment. When you are well-prepared you come across as “unscripted” and fluid because you're not scrambling to find the right words. You've internalized the dialogue, so it sounds like a calm, authentic conversation rather than a memorized monologue. Make Peace with the Word “No” Time and again, top sales performers cite a simple truth: a fast “no” can be better than a lingering “maybe.” It allows you to save time, refocus energy, and cultivate a pipeline of engaged prospects. Learning to handle “no” as a data point—rather than personal rejection—keeps you in motion. Categorize the “Nos”: Some are “not now,” others are “not a fit,” and a few are “never.” Understanding which type of no you're dealing with can shape follow-up strategies. Seek Feedback: If appropriate, ask, “I respect your decision. May I ask what caused you to decline?” That insight can sharpen future presentations. Stay Professional: Burn no bridges. A gracious exit can leave the door cracked open; circumstances often change. Shift Your Mindset About What Asking for the Sale Really Means Whether you're selling software,

You're not.  You're gonna offer a menu of pricing and you're gonna let your clients are gonna tell you based on where they buy where the industry is, okay? The professionals are likely gonna, the lefties are gonna buy the no smudge or they're gonna buy, and the pros are gonna buy the $4 marker. We use these a lot. That's cheap for me. The person who's just doing one project or it's something at school might just spend a dollar. The person who forgets things all the time, they might say, that could be useful. So based on your pricing, your clients are gonna categorize themselves. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould and this has been your #70secondCEO.

In this episode, you'll learn how to centralize tasks using a digital system, how to create a streamlined process for email and information management and the importance of protected time blocks. Key points discussed include: - Centralize your tasks: Gather all your tasks from various sources (email, notes, calendar, etc.) into one central digital task list to improve planning and prioritization. - Protect your time: Block off dedicated time in your calendar each day for focused work on tasks and email management to avoid getting distracted. - Streamline your processes: Develop efficient systems for managing tasks, email, and information to save time and reduce stress. - Avoid paper-based task management: Using paper to track to-dos is less effective than a digital task management system. - Make quick decisions on emails: Process emails immediately and either take action, file, or delete them - don't let them accumulate in your inbox. - Categorize your digital files: Organize your documents, photos, and other digital assets into a structured folder system with main categories and subcategories. - Don't let your desktop accumulate: Build a habit of immediately filing or deleting temporary files like screenshots to prevent clutter. - Start small and work backwards: Even small improvements to your productivity processes can make a big difference. Converting Corporate Experience into Agency Ownership Curtis began his career working in corporate right after college, starting with roles at smaller companies before landing an IT position supporting sales and services at a Fortune 500 company. Years later, he decided to relocate with his wife and found himself struggling to find work in his new city until he connected with two agency owners specializing in web development and IT services. Taking charge of the IT services division, Curtis innovatively transformed the agency's business model by implementing a retainer-based approach for IT services and went on to run that division for ten years. His journey into agency ownership began once he figured it was time to start consulting and working on his own. Little by little he brought together a group of agency professionals he met over years in order to complement the services he provides, ultimately building what is now Collideascope. How to Maintain Momentum When Growth Feels Slow Thanks to a solid network, Curtis hasn't experienced the typical struggles of finding and retaining talent. For most of his time with the agency, people who come work with him end up staying, which has allowed him to maintain a very low turnover rate. He is aware this is not always the case, as his team is frequently called to assist agency teams when they're experiencing turnover. On the other hand, marketing has been especially hard for him as he struggles to balance client needs with the demands of marketing his own agency. This is a common dilemma, where the focus on client work can overshadow the necessity of promoting the agency brand. It seemed like every time he was finally getting ahead by gaining a new client he was losing another one. As a result, even though he has seen growth year-over-year, it's been slow and never quite where he want s it to be. The resulting emotional toll has tempted Curtis to give up. However, he has learned to cultivate a positive mindset that embraces that growth is not just about the number of clients but also about building resilience and adapting to change. In his experience, working with clients can help maintain this positive attitude. Instead of always working on the backend of the business, he makes sure to always get some consulting time, which gets him the opportunity to have some wins helping clients solve problems and gets him excited to do his work. Sometimes it may seem like you've tried everything, however, a harder look at your process may reveal a key change that could help improve your results. As Curtis has learned, consistency is about committing to a process of continuous improvement and adaptation. Whether it's refining service offerings, nurturing client relationships, or engaging in marketing efforts, the consistent application of effort is what drives growth. Converting Listeners to Clients: The Power of Podcasting for Agencies When traditional content marketing methods like newsletters and blogging weren't delivering the desired results, Curtis changed the strategy to try their luck with a podcast. The journey wasn't immediate success. The first six months were admittedly challenging, marked by slow growth and a steep learning curve. However, once the team found their rhythm, the podcast began to yield unexpected benefits. Not only did it generate new leads, but it also served as a powerful educational tool for prospects in their pipeline, building the confidence needed to convert listeners into clients. What started as an experimental marketing channel evolved into a valuable pipeline-building tool. The team discovered that through authentic storytelling and sharing customer experiences, they could forge deeper connections with their audience in ways that written content simply couldn't match. The podcast format allows them to showcase their expertise while maintaining a personal touch that resonates with potential clients. Pro tip for podcasters: Try to not lose momentum with your listeners. After his first season, Curtis has learned to record episodes ahead of time. In the very beginning, it's difficult to get listeners for your show. However, when they finally do, they'll tend to binge several episodes so make sure you have a consistent upload schedule so you don't lose the interest of new listeners. Break Through the Overwhelm and Empower Your Team As Curtis points out, many agency leaders find themselves overwhelmed with the burden of managing a growing team. On one hand, there's the significant investment needed in bringing in new people with the right expertise. On the other hand, it's also difficult to train and coach up people already in the business to transition into those positions. Finding yourself paralyzed by questions regarding cash flow and profit means you're not focusing on the most important asset, which is your time. The transition from Owner to CEO requires a shift in mindset, where the focus moves from doing everything yourself to empowering others to carry out the agency's mission. The journey to effective delegation begins with a simple but powerful exercise of auditing your time. Here's how to do it: Take screenshots of your calendar for the past two weeks Document all activities you've performed Categorize these activities into two lists: tasks you love or energize you and tasks that drain your energy or you'd rather never do again With your audit complete, start delegating low-value tasks off your plate. After that, hire at least one of the people you'll need to start getting high-level tasks you never want to do again. You don't necessarily have to go out and hire a COO right away when you're running a twenty-person agency, but you can start by hiring a director of operations. Prioritize strategic hiring to identify the right individuals with the skills and mindset necessary to contribute to the agency's vision. By carefully selecting team members who align with the agency's goals and values, owners can create a strong foundation for growth. Learning to Embrace Mistakes in Agency Leadership A lot the fear of hiring new team members revolves around getting it wrong and regret the decision. This usually leads to hanging on to that person for too long, even though they're not the right fit, just to avoid going through the hiring process again. Simply put, mistakes are inevitable as you grow your agency. At some point, you'll look back at your hiring mistakes or bad clients as lessons. Learn to laugh at the mistakes and craziness that happens in this business and you'll enjoy the ride much more. For example, Curtis looks back at how rigid he was with his team when it came to working remote. He knows now that his opposition to it was a big mistake. This experience taught him the importance of embracing adaptability to new practices, tools, and methodologies that provide a significant edge or allowing them to streamline operations and focus on higher-value tasks. As we reflect on some of our most impactful conversations this year, we're thrilled to revisit our sit-down with Brett Eaton—a keynote speaker, author, and high-performance leader.  In this episode, Brett dives into the essential role discipline plays in reaching our fullest potential. He emphasizes finding balance in our schedules to reduce friction and keep us moving forward—like those slow-building results from hitting the gym, it's about breaking goals into manageable steps and knowing when to pivot to level up.  Whether it's your first listen or a timely refresher, Brett's insights offer the perfect push as we move towards the end of  year and look ahead to what's next! Takeaways Define success for yourself and avoid chasing goals that may not bring true happiness. Categorize goals into different areas of life and set short-term targets to work towards. Consistency is key - aim for 'no zero days' and make progress every day. Weekends are an opportunity to catch up, plan, and move the needle in personal development. Follow-Up Mastery: How Practice Ascend Revolutionizes Orthodontic Patient Engagement

Welcome to the Hey Docs! Podcast with your host Jill Allen. Today, I am joined by Dr. Michael Capogna from PracticeAscend. Dr. Capogna is here to discuss the importance of follow-ups in busy practices, how PracticeAscend can make these tasks more manageable, and the role of AI and automation in maintaining a personal touch with patients. We'll also explore the future of AI in orthodontics and how practices can leverage these innovations at different stages of their lifecycle. Let's get into it!Summary Michael, an orthodontist, discusses his company Practice Ascend, which helps orthodontic practices with systematic patient follow-up. He explains that the idea for the company came about when they realized they weren't effectively following up with patients who didn't start treatment right away. They initially used a notebook and then a Google spreadsheet but wanted a better, simpler way to automate and streamline the follow-up process. Practice Ascend was born out of this need. Michael highlights the importance of follow-up in increasing conversion rates and providing a better patient experience. He also discusses how Practice Ascend uses AI to automate tasks and improve efficiency for treatment coordinators and front desk staff. The system includes features like drag-and-drop follow-up tiles, automated Google reviews, call connect for Google ads and customizable follow-up reminders. Michael emphasizes the simplicity and user-friendliness of Practice Ascend, making it accessible to all levels of technical ability. Practice Ascend is a software that helps with follow-ups and communication in orthodontic practices. It allows practices to track and categorize patients based on their status and automate drip campaigns to reach out to patients who haven't started treatment or have been unresponsive. The software also integrates with email and provides customizable options for follow-ups. In orthodontics, AI is expected to improve virtual monitoring, automate tasks like generating videos for patient support, and enhance digital workflow. It is important for practices to clean up their statuses and have a clear follow-up process in place before implementing Practice Ascend. https://www.practiceascend.io/ Takeaways Practice Ascend helps orthodontic practices with systematic patient follow-upAutomating follow-up tasks improves efficiency and increases conversion ratesAI is used to streamline processes and provide a better patient experienceFeatures like drag-and-drop follow-up tiles and call connect for Google ads simplify the follow-up processPractice Ascend is user-friendly and accessible to all levels of technical ability Practice Ascend is a software that helps with follow-ups and communication in orthodontic practices. The software allows practices to track and categorize patients based on their status and automate drip campaigns.AI in orthodontics is expected to improve virtual monitoring and automate tasks like generating videos for patient support. It is important for practices to clean up their statuses and have a clear follow-up process in place before implementing Practice Ascend.Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background02:22 The Need for a Better Follow-Up System08:31 The Importance of Follow-Up and Conversion Rates11:10 Using AI to Automate Tasks and Increase Personal Touch18:57 Simplicity and User-Friendliness of Practice Ascend21:37 Follow-Up with Google Ads Patients24:42 Marketing to Cold Leads and Drip Campaigns34:20 The Future of Orthodontics: AI and Virtual Monitoring37:32 Preparing for Success with Practice Ascend Connect With Our Advertisers Kaleidoscope - Orthodontic Digital MarketingSmileSuite - Customizable Presentation Software and Post-Consultation Follow-Up Retainers for Life - Outsourced Retainer Program Are you ready to start a practice of your own? Walking into a new classroom only to find it filled with the previous teacher's leftovers can be overwhelming. In this episode, Bridget and Michelle guide you through a systematic approach to reclaim and organize your new space, turning what could be a daunting task into a manageable project. Perfect for first-year teachers or those moving to a new classroom, this episode provides practical steps to take control of your teaching environment. Episode Highlights: See the space and evaluate:: Begin by evaluating the space. Understand what you've inherited, how the previous teacher organized it, and what might need to go. This first look will help you plan your cleaning and organizing strategy. Ask for clarification: Before throwing anything out, check with administrators or colleagues about what must stay and what can go. Understanding what's essential and what's expendable will streamline the entire process. Clear the space: Pull everything out of cabinets and drawers to get a full view of what you have. This step not only helps in sorting but also in cleaning and reorganizing the space effectively. Categorize the items: Dive into categorizing the items into keep, trash, and donate piles. Further organize the 'keep' items based on their utility and relevance to your teaching needs. Disperse the items: Once sorted, strategically place items back into the space. Use bins and labels to create a system that makes sense for your daily teaching activities and maintains organization throughout the year. SUBMIT YOUR TIME SUCKING HURDLE! Snag Our Signature Budget Template! Hey budget besties! This episode is all about breaking down the barriers and fears women have around the concept of wealth. We'll dive into why the word "wealth" can be intimidating, share personal stories, and offer practical steps to help you start building the financial future you deserve. This episode is from a conversation we had with our friend Holly Logan from the "Lead with Empathy" podcast. Go check her out on Spotify! Key Takeaways: Redefining Wealth: Wealth isn't just for the elite—it's for all of us! It's about living the life you want and achieving your personal goals. Women often shy away from the term "wealth," but it's time to change that mindset and own our financial power. 90-Day Review: Start by doing a 90-day review of your bank and credit card statements. Categorize your spending to see where your money is going. This is the first step to creating a realistic budget. Creating a Budget that Works: Use real numbers from your 90-day review to create a budget. Prioritize your values and allocate your money where it matters most to you. Bougie on a Budget: Yes, you can enjoy the finer things in life without breaking the bank! Identify areas where you can cut back and redirect that money to what truly makes you happy. Automating Your Finances: Set up multiple accounts for different purposes (bills, spending, savings). Automate transfers to ensure your money goes where it needs to without constant manual effort. Practical Tips: 90-Day Review: Grab your bank statements from the past three months. Use different colored highlighters to categorize your expenses (bills, groceries, gas, fun money, etc.). Identify areas where you can cut back and reallocate funds. Budgeting: List all your income and essential expenses first. Allocate remaining funds to your priorities and goals. Use a budgeting tool or app to keep track of your spending. Automating Savings: Set up separate savings accounts for different goals (e.g., vacation, emergency fund, holiday shopping). Automate transfers to these accounts on payday. Managing Debt: Decide whether to focus on paying off debt aggressively or balancing debt repayment with savings. Remember, it's about what works best for you and your financial goals. 4 Ways To Connect With Us: 1️⃣ FREE CALL: Book your FREE 20-Minute Financial Coaching Call now! When you are utilizing a computerized software system to do your bookkeeping, it will save you time if you are taking advantage of all the bells and whistles it has to offer, but how do you know that everything is getting classified in the proper accounts?  One of the tradeoffs you have when you are using functions such as bank feeds and automatic data entry is that you need to make sure you are reviewing all of your transactions for accuracy.  In today's podcast episode, I cover one of the most important reports you can review to ensure all the transactions you have going into your financial statements are categorized in the right accounts.  This is a simple report to generate, and it won't take you too much time to review, especially if you are able to work on your bookkeeping on a monthly basis so that you have accurate financial statements to review.  You know I always recommend you keep up with your bookkeeping and reconcile your accounts on at least a monthly basis.  When you do this, you are able to make smart business decisions in real-time for your business rather than having this information months after the tax year has ended, and you no longer have the ability to be proactive about your business decisions.  Whether you are a self-employed individual, a solopreneur, entrepreneur, mompreneur, freelancer, small business owner, a remote, virtual, online, or in-house bookkeeper, or a virtual assistant or VA, having the knowledge of this easy-to-generate report and understanding how simple it is to spot errors will give you even more confidence that you are doing your bookkeeping accurately.  These tips are essential whether you are using a computerized software system like QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, or FreshBooks for your business finances; or doing your bookkeeping manually with an Excel spreadsheet or even a Google Document… Learn about the Under Pressure:  Stress Management And Resilience Program here: https://www.financialadventure.com/stress Find out how you can work with me by either scheduling a free consultation or signing up for the BALANCE Life Coaching program, where you can get private one-on-one coaching every week.  Find out where you'd like to see yourself and your business in the future.  We'll create a laser-focused plan, including which action steps you need to take to get started on the path to success: https://www.financialadventure.com/work-with-me Accountants, CPAs, Bookkeepers, Tax Preparers & Financial Professionals, sign up here to get updates on upcoming opportunities & grab the Audit Of Your Well-Being & Balance Guide here: https://www.financialadventure.com/accountant Ready to set up your business?  I have a program to help you get your business set up so that you can start making money.  Sign up for this program here: https://www.financialadventure.com/start Are you ready to try coaching?  Schedule an Introductory Coaching Session today.  You'll have the opportunity to see how you like coaching with an Introductory Coaching Session: https://www.financialadventure.com/intro Join us in the Mastering Your Small Business Finances PROFIT LAB if you are ready to take control of your business finances and create the profitable business you are striving for.  Are you ready to generate revenues and increase the profit in your business: https://www.financialadventure.com/profit If You Are Ready To Choose, Start Or Grow Your Side Hustle, Get Your Free Checklist And Assessment Here: https://www.financialadventure.com/sidehustle Grab Your FREE guide:  5 Essential Strategies For Stress-Free Bookkeeping: https://www.financialadventure.com/5essentials Your FREE Online Virtual Bookkeeping Business Starter Guide & Success Path Is Waiting For You: https://www.financialadventure.com/starterguide Join Our Facebook Community:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenbusinessownersultimatediybookkeepingboutique The Strategic Bookkeeping Academy, including Bookkeeping Basics, is open for registration!  You can learn more and sign up here: https://www.financialadventure.com/sba Looking for a payroll solution for your business?  You can get an exclusive 15% discount on your payroll services when you sign up here: https://www.financialadventure.com/adp QuickBooks Online - Save 30% Your First 6 Months: https://www.financialadventure.com/quickbooks Sign up for a virtual coffee chat to see if starting a Bookkeeping Business is right for you: https://www.financialadventure.com/discovery Show Notes:  https://www.financialadventure.com This podcast is sponsored by Financial Adventure, LLC ~ visit https://www.financialadventure.com for additional information and free resources.

In this episode, Stacy discusses the importance of addressing predictable problems in horse training before tackling unpredictable ones. She argues that focusing on known issues is more effective, as it allows for better planning and addresses both the horse's and rider's thought patterns. Stacy emphasizes that riders often ignore or make excuses for predictable problems, making it challenging to choose to address them. She encourages riders to examine their own thought processes when facing recurring issues with their horses, as this self-awareness can lead to more effective solutions. Stacy illustrates her points with examples ranging from basic groundwork to advanced riding techniques. She notes that as riders progress, recognizing predictable challenges becomes exciting rather than frustrating, as it allows for targeted problem-solving. The key takeaways are: • Categorize challenges as predictable or unpredictable • Start by addressing predictable problems • Examine your own thought patterns and responses • Recognize that solving predictable issues can resolve unpredictable ones • View predictable challenges as opportunities for improvement

How I Built It

I remember the first time after my wife and I started dating that a mutual friend of ours became pregnant. I was the first one to find out and got to relay the message to her."Amy's pregnant," I said. My wife then asked a series of questions: "When is she due? What is she having? How is she feeling?" I had the same answer to every question: "I don't know."All I knew was that Amy was pregnant. My wife later went out and found this information for both of us. All these details were crucial to being a more present and supportive friend. So why am I telling you this? if you are running a business, especially a solo business where your time is so important, and you are not time tracking, it's kind of like knowing just the bare minimum. You might know you completed a project, but you should really know how long you spent on it, where you are spending most of your time, and how you can use this data to improve your business. So in today's episode, you'll learn about the importance of time tracking for solopreneurs. Time tracking is not just about noting down hours; it's about understanding where your time goes, improving efficiency, and making informed business decisions.Top TakeawaysStart Simple: Begin with basic time-tracking methods like pen and paper or simple apps. The key is to start noting down where your time goes, even if it's just approximate.Use the Right Tools: I recommend using tools like Timery (which sits on top of Toggl), Timing, and RescueTime. These tools can help automate the process and provide detailed insights into how you spend your time.Categorize and Tag Tasks: Break down your tasks into projects and use tags for more granular tracking. This helps in understanding which specific activities are taking up most of your time and allows for better analysis.Regular Reviews: Review your time tracking data regularly—weekly, monthly, and quarterly. This helps in identifying trends and making necessary adjustments to improve efficiency.Automate Where Possible: Use shortcuts and automation tools like Stream Deck and focus modes on iOS to start and stop timers automatically. This reduces the manual effort involved in time tracking. Sponsors: Check out Liquid WebGet started with Clariti for just $1 your first month with code SOLO2024 ★ Support this podcast ★

Insights: Anxiety is Not an Emotion

Culture and Leadership Connections Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2024 18:23

Anxiety is Not an EmotionDid you know that anxiety is not an emotion? You may think you "feel" anxious, but in reality, you're sensing anxiety. Anxiety is a physiological reaction from the "fight or flight" function of the vagus nerve. It triggers the adrenals to release cortisol and adrenaline into your nervous system, setting off an alert to potential danger. You feel it in your solar plexus above your kidneys. Anxiety's hormones aren't usually signs of real danger, making anxiety "homeless." It is a moving target in search of a home, but always gets kicked out due to its bad behavior. Anxiety can never be satisfied, making it a close partner to perfectionism. Never happy, never good enough, never complete. Anxiety, perfectionism, criticism, and paranoia cause repeating neurological thought loops that entrench fear (false expectations appearing real). This leads to catastrophizing (seeing disaster around every corner) or magical thinking (belief that unrelated events are connected despite no evidence). These thought patterns result from anxiety, constantly searching for a place to reside, but no one wants to let them in permanently due to their disruptive nature.Emotions, on the other hand, are our friends. Whether pleasant or unpleasant, they ask to be acknowledged and felt. When we acknowledge our emotions, they transmit messages necessary for both surviving and thriving. However, we often fail to acknowledge and accept our emotions, causing them to return and eventually get stuck in the body. This can create stiffness, pain, and inflammation in the muscles, organs, or entire body areas. But there's hope! There are practical things you can do, or rather undo, to create and sustain feelings of calm, peace, and confidence, which dissolve anxiety.Three Anxiety-Calming Practices:1. Cognitive Practice: Move Your To-Do List to a Success List Start with a sticky note pile and a pen or pencil. Set a timer for two minutes and write the first "to do" thing that comes to mind on a sticky note, then rip it off and set it aside. Continue until the timer goes off. Categorize these tasks into piles and put the top priority for each pile on top. Create a "success list" of no more than three items. When feeling overwhelmed, do this activity to calm your mind and create a sense of order.2. Breathing and AwarenessBecome consciously aware of your breathing and whatever feeling you are experiencing in the moment. Make this a practice whenever you notice sensations of anxiety or obsessive thinking. This will calm your nervous system and replace danger signals with signals of well-being. In a real dangerous situation, this practice will help you stay clear-headed and calm.3. Acceptance Tell yourself, “I accept that I am feeling this right now.” Acceptance is the thriving part of your nervous system that allows feelings of joy and brings inspiration. Accepting one feeling in the moment opens the horizon to other good things, helping you wave goodbye to anxiety. In conclusion, anxiety is not an emotion, but instead a physiological response that you can calm. Using the aforementioned anxiety-calming practices will bring relief and a sense of freedom. Thanks to Marie-Helene Pelletier for her insights on this topic from her book, The Resilience Plan. Our bodies, our minds, our memories? They became part of us, based on our upbringing, and our surroudings growing up. What are they? They are our bad habits, fears, laziness, insecurities, doubt, not feeling worthy, and they keep us down in the dumps, where don't want to be! Side note: Laziness does not need to be a con! Examples: __Someone robs a bank… that's stupid lazy! Don't be that. __Someone who never does their yard work, weeds will take over, even becoming a hazard. Be smart lazy and hire that out, find a way to make that is not send you to prison!  How do we minimize them? (it's not possible to banish them forever!) (Make friends with them (but not BFFs!)… it can be a guest, a passenger, a distant friend/relative),   AND by Nurturing/Focusing our PROs and strengths (because what we think, we become): (example: Clean kitchen, organized closet, beautiful garden, etc.)   CATEGORIZE and tackle things individually (at home or work).   This is HARD work! Try a cleaning schedule, I do this (since everything starts at home (what happens inside our homes shapes our lives).   Book mentioned. 1. Stacey Brown Randall is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur who focuses on referrals. She wrote the book "Getting Referrals Without Asking". 2. Referrals should happen naturally based on science and human behavior, not by directly asking others for them. 3. Referrals start with the referral source knowing someone who needs help, not with you. You are simply the solution they connect people to. 4. Creating desire and opportunity are key - you control desire by providing value, caring about others, etc. You can't fully control opportunity but you can put yourself in a better position. 5. Have genuine conversations focusing on others, listen, and follow up in a structured way. This builds trust and plants "referral seeds". 6. Thank people for specific referrals in handwritten notes. Mention the name of who they referred to picture that person. 7. Consistency over time with referral sources is critical, not just doing one-off things. It snowballs as you build trust. 8. Categorize and understand who your true referral sources are. Not just everyone in your database. Look at history. 9. Have systems and processes in place to be "referable" - repeatable professionalism. Experience matters when people refer you. 10. Wisely redeem broken friendships | with Elizabeth Laing Thompson

We are in February. And February, in the United States in particular, has to do with Valentine's Day and romantic relationships in specifically, but more in general, relationships and friendships. And so I have an interesting conversation with Elizabeth Laing Thompson about her new book, “When a Friendship Falls Apart.” I absolutely fell in love with her! It's a thick volume, especially by modern day standards where it seems like, publishing houses give us shorter and shorter books. This is not the case. Her book is a massive compilation of all the tips, all the advice, everything you need to know if you've ever been in a friendship that ended badly or that is going poorly or that has hurt you in any way, shape, or form. Through this book Elizabeth hopes to minister to those who are experiencing this often undiagnosed, unrecognized grief of friendship loss or friendship breakup, as she calls it. There are difficult emotions that accompany friendship hardship. So, she and I talk about important things, like: -          friendship breakups: coping with loss and pain; -          healing and forgiveness: overcoming bitterness; -          Biblical wisdom: applying Scripture to relationships; -          trust and vulnerability: rebuilding connections; -          grieving and mourning: processing friendship loss; -          finding beauty in brokenness: embracing imperfections; -          prayer and guidance: seeking God's direction. Elizabeth acknowledges that the hardest part in navigating a friendship breakup is finding the right people to talk to about it. She acts as this one friend you need. She keeps you company. She points you to Gospel counsel as you navigate the loss of the friendship as it was. And then she offers wisdom for navigating future friendships after a loss because that's absolutely key. How do you even dare to open your heart again after it's been wounded? She is grounded in Scripture. She points to God's views on forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing after hurt. And then she gives us the best practical tools for navigating those conversations. How do you initiate a reconciliation conversation? What words can you use that are going to be most productive without escalating potential conflict? She is blending personal story, biblical examples, faith filled wisdom. I love all of the many, many interactions with Scripture that she gives us. She asks, how do we guard against the poison of bitterness so we can process the hurt and move forward? Elizabeth talks about when and how we can seek this reconciliation and what does look like. And this is anything but cliche. I promise you that. How do we know if the time has come to actually leave a friendship behind? How do we open up again and then trust our freshly wounded hearts to new friendships? Friendship loss is this unique kind of grief. It's a private and confusing kind of grief. And as we struggle to digest the pain and we wonder, how could this happen? What do I do now? Elizabeth is here to help hurting hearts find healing, find lessons to learn from the past, and stay open to new friendships in the future. Again, it's so full of hope. Some of the key advice I will remember from the book are, -          Learn to navigate and overcome the pain and challenges of friendship breakups with grace and biblical wisdom. -          Cultivate trust in relationships, acknowledging that past hurts can affect future connections but not define them. -          10. Find joy and hold onto positive memories even when some friendships can't be repaired, allowing healing to take place. -          Protect your heart in extreme friendship scenarios by seeking comfort in prayer and scripture. -          Give oneself permission to grieve and process the loss of friendships -          Seek beauty in broken friendships and adopt a more open-minded and accepting approach to making connections despite past hurts. -          Bring fears and insecurities to God as a source of courage and guidance in seeking and fostering friendships. -          Let God guide and protect in the process of building trust and forming meaningful connections. -          Look ahead to the eternal promise of friendships in heaven, where unity and safety abound. -          Reflect Jesus in current friendships and strive for unity, echoing His prayer for oneness in John 17. -          Categorize friendships and address potential misunderstandings by applying practical tips and Scripture. -          Understand and appreciate the concept of mismatched expectations in friendships to prevent conflicts and foster understanding. -          Seek divine guidance, wisdom, courage, and the capacity to love and care for others within friendships through prayer. -          Engage in the process of repairing broken relationships with humility, grace, and a desire for beauty in brokenness. -          Root out bitterness and unforgiveness from friendships, replacing them with prayer and forgiveness to facilitate reconciliation. -          Embrace the healing power of forgiveness and prayer, remembering that holding onto bitterness only causes further harm. -          Find comfort in God as the perfect friend and reflect His love and forgiveness in all friendships. -          Treasure and honor the meaningful memories made within brokenness, seeing them as precious testaments to the resilience of relationships. How would you describe the best leaders you have personally learned from? I think teachability, humility and a deep dependence on Christ would top my list. And therefore, To be a leader is to know how to go to the source to get replenished. To lead well, you need to go to the well yourself. Also, To be an effective Christian leader is to know that you can only lead well when you are led well. And then you go and reproduce in others what Jesus has done in you. In the words of Paul, you are able to say, "… what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." 2Timothy 2:2 – Paul describes 4 generations of leaders in this passage. Himself, Timothy, who leads others who then will lead others. When you drink from the leading well, you lead well. So, we invite you to join us on The Leading Well, a brand new leadership course by Gospel Spice Ministries. Details at https://www.gospelspice.com/leadership  To be a leader is to have a posture of the heart that is always thinking in terms of go, make, do. We see “the well” as a place of refreshing – for yourself but also so that you can bring refreshing through God's Word to others. Are you tired of juggling endless tasks in your commercial real estate business? Wondering if there's a way to boost productivity without burning out? Join Ash Patel as he sits down with Bob Lachance, founder of Reva Global, to uncover the game-changing potential of virtual assistants. Discover how these dynamic assistants can revolutionize your workflow, from lead generation to administrative duties, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: scaling your commercial real estate empire. Key Takeaways: Start Small, Gain Confidence: Virtual assistants (VAs) can significantly enhance your business efficiency, but starting with one VA and gaining confidence is often the best approach. Gradually add more VAs as you identify specific tasks that can be outsourced effectively. Clear Task Identification: Successful utilization of VAs hinges on precisely defining the tasks you want them to handle. Categorize income-producing tasks from non-income-producing ones and offload the latter. Remember, even if a VA performs at 80% of your level, the time saved can significantly grow your business. Avoiding Burnout and Overcoming Skepticism: Monitoring burnout is crucial, but VA tasks are typically specialized and structured, which can prevent burnout in comparison to monotonous assembly line work. Skepticism about VAs can be countered by giving it a try, ensuring clarity on the tasks you need assistance with, and utilizing tracking metrics if necessary.   Bob Lachance | Real Estate Background Bob Lachance is the founder and CEO of Reva Global, a trailblazing virtual assistant training and staffing company that caters to real estate professionals.
