The holidays tend to sneak up on us as we're juggling different roles to manage our day-to-day lives. Life doesn't chill out just because the holidays arrive and adding the holidays on top of your already full life can make things feel overwhelming really fast

This year, Rochester, NY is in the path of the total solar eclipse. There are lots of special events happening in town—the orchestra is performing a special concert, the science museum is hosting a festival, and the schools are giving everyone the day off to experience this historical event. As I looked ahead at this year, I thought it might be fun to plan a special event of our own to mark this occasion in the studio. Maybe special repertoire? An incentive program? Then I thought about the informances the performing ensembles at my school put on early in the year: an informal demonstration for parents of what they're learning and what they're working on.What if we did something like this in the studio? I thought.Today, I'm taking you behind the scenes in real-time as I research, plan, and organize my first informance for my students. I'll share a few historical examples of musicians who exemplified this model of education and engagement, talk about ways you could structure this, outline the necessary components that separate an informance from a performance, and share how my students and I are preparing for this event. For show notes + a full transcript, click here.Resources Mentioned*Disclosure: I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.Ep. 064 - How I Plan a Year of Student RepertoireD. People say all the time that consistency is key, but to be blunt, I just don't think this is the case simply because this saying doesn't give you much context. In my 6 years of being an entrepreneur, I have heard from a lot of people that the reason they think they're not seeing success is because they're not being consistent. And while that might be true to a certain extent, it's actually a bit deeper than that. Because there's a reason you're not being consistent, and the reason behind your inconsistency is the real reason you are stuck and not seeing results. Also, I have to mention that another reason I just don't agree with the saying, "consistency is key," is because I have seen so many people be "consistent" with posting on social media for months, or even years, and they still don't have anything to show for it. I MEAN... If that doesn't show you that consistency isn't the key, I don't know what does.

As 2023 begins, it's been important for me to take some time to reflect, not only on my goals but how I want to feel. I want to prioritize romanticizing my life and FUN! This year. The start of this year is also different in that it's the first time I'm starting a New Year working for myself full-time. We talk about some of the anxiety and emotions around that in this episode. The main things I really want to focus on and cultivate in 2023: You can take up space. This means giving yourself the credit to use your voice and have value and belong in every room you're in. That's not mine to carry. Leaving the responsibility of other's action or inaction on them. Not trying to shield or shelter other's from discomfort. Asking for what I need and allowing others to fulfill that for me. The year of FUN and personal enrichment. I've started doing things just for the sake of doing them. It's been freeing not having to always ben productive! Some of my favorite things have included: playing piano again, starting a 1,000 piece puzzle, learning French, starting a workout app program, and roller skating! I’m diving deep into how to cultivate your creativity with daily practice and awareness by following the exercise in Twyla Tharp’s book The Creative Habit…our first book in the DSS book club! This book isn’t what you think it is. It’s not a quick checklist of creative activities to do so you feel like you accomplished something. This book goes deep into the psyche of how creatives think. Not just visual artists but musicians, writers and dancers. It stabs you with truths and realizations that really make you think. So much that reading this book didn’t happen quickly. I would stop at a sentence and allow the words to sink in. It was hard to pick my favorite exercises and take-aways but I managed to select my Top 5 Big A-Ha's from the book. After the episode, join me over on the Deep Space Sparkle Facebook page for a discussion on what you thought of The Creative Habit. Patty's 5 biggest takeaways from reading The Creative Habit: Learn it and use it for Life by Twyla Tharp: 1. Twyla's 5 Big Creativity Fears - people will laugh at me - someone has done it before - I have nothing to say - I will upset someone These are so universal, aren't they? I share my thoughts on these inside the episode. 2. Muscle Memory How copying and repetitive action leads to personal inspiration and mastery. I literally LOVE this one so much. It's an undervalued an underestimated practice. 3. Start with a Box The power of collecting ideas so they won't be forgotten is just so liberating. It helps creative folks "capture:" their ideas so they are free to move on with their day knowing their idea won't be lost. Such a powerful exercise. 4. Scratching Permission to do research and the hunt for nibbles of ideas. Go with an intention of not stopping until something triggers inside you. 5. Skill The importance of building skills in order to develop creativity means that sometimes you just need to step outside your comfort zone. "Success will happen by consistently doing the work of feeding creativity. Not judging the process. Not analyzing but just feeding, the sifting. Basically, experimenting without expectations." - Patty What do you think? Please join me over on the DSS Facebook page for a conversation about the book. Look for Book Club in the events. How I Plan to Live (on) Forever Last week, Internet marketer Alex Becker posted about how he is leaving social media. This post got 500+ likes and a few hundred comments, and many seemed to agree with him. I, however, did not. Yesterday, I came across an older Gary Vaynerchuk video that talked about creating content, and kind of the opposite of what Alex was saying. There is not a "right" or "wrong" here, merely just opinions. Gary brought up a very interesting perspective on creating content, specifically YouTube content. I share his insight in this episode, and one that all content creators need to strongly consider. Grab a beer

What do you do to plan for the upcoming year? Do you sit down and set goals for yourself or do you just wing it? I take planning very seriously and I’m sure this is the reason I am where I am today – not because I’m lucky, because I sat down one day and decided what I wanted to accomplish. I could read Jim Rohn quotes all day (and you’ll even hear one in the episode today) but this one really struck a chord with me today. “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” That is the topic The post How I Plan the Upcoming Year (and turned my dreams into my reality) appeared first on B.Hooked Crochet | Knitting.

Want to join in on the conversation call 888-563-3228 or go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/contact Today I interview Jeff Chen of the new Podcast Monetization Platform JoyRide. I also share some podcasting news, and my community comes out (thanks to the kind heart of Steve Stewart) and wishes me a happy birthday as I turn 50!. Joyride has been mentioned in Forbes, Market Watch and many other publications as they just launched in December of 2014. According to one article, "JOYRIDE allows users to search over 100,000 different podcast shows in a variety of categories, and is seeking to convince podcast listeners to donate a monthly fee to their favorite programs. JOYRIDE is one of several companies GOOGLE is using for its developer program for ANDROID AUDIO, a version of the operating system developed for smart cars. How Much Does Joyride Cost? It's free to sign up, and their website states, "Joyride charges 5% in fees plus credit card processing fees of 2.9% + $0.30 per contribution." When I asked Jeff if there was a fee for removing your he replied via e-mail, "Hi Dave. Nope! Those are the only fees we charge!" With this in mind, when a listener donates $1 to you take home 62 cents and joy ride takes 38. If someone donates $3 you receive $2.46 and Joyride keeps .54 (that 30 cents per transaction really seems heft when you are only receiving one dollar - so make your rewards good enough to inspire people to pay more). How Does Joyride Differ from Patreon? The biggest difference is JoyRide can work on YOUR Site (so you don't have to send people to joyride.com/yourcampaign). Patreon currently takes fess on the money coming in, and they also charge a fee when you remove the money. They go into great detail on their website, and as some people pay with paypal, and other use a service called stripe, it is somewhat difficult to understand. I appreciate Patreon trying to give as much as possible, but it seems to add a certain level complication into understand exactly how much you're going to make. I am testing patreon if you want to see my current efforts. How I Plan on Testing Joyride On Saturdays (10:30 am) I host the "Ask the Podcast Coach" we do an hour long show, and then typically another 30 minutes "off the air." We are going to start a JoyRide campaign for those who want to hear the additional 30 minutes. I realize, that podcasting is a small niche, but it should be interesting to see how this works. I will be documenting the process along the way.
