Today we’re talking about some warning signs to watch out for when you’re hiring a new employee. You’ve probably experienced some, or all, of these. And out of desperation, you may have found yourself making excuses for them or overlooking them. So I’m here to validate that these really are warning signs that an employee isn’t going to work out. What you'll learn from this episode: Why someone who is late to an interview is a warning sign. Why you should have everybody do an assignment before you hire them. It’s a bad sign when someone calls in sick when they first get started with you. Why someone who immediately starts making excuses and justifying it is another red flag. How overall dismissal or tone deafness is a warning sign. I'd really appreciate it if you would click the like button above and leave a review if your favorite podcast app has that ability. Thank you! Registration is open for, How To CEO. If you are a female entrepreneur leading her own business, trying to figure out how to deal with all things "team" - like hiring, firing, holding people accountable, having difficult conversations, getting work done through others, delegating, dealing with difficult employees, how to coach versus how to manage - go to howtoceoregister.com. © 2021 Kris Plachy
I have noticed that many of my clients seem to fall into two polarizing positions. They either end up in a feeling of total helplessness or a place of arrogance. Ironically, the results are the same. Your confidence is priceless, but it’s not something you can just compensate for by hiding or abdicating. Here’s my suggestion … What you'll learn from this episode: About “I can’t” and the feeling of helplessness. What content / advice consumption is and why it happens. About “I shouldn’t have to…” and arrogance. Why you must learn the people part. We’re opening up early registration for the How to CEO program starting on March 23, 2021. Go to HowtoCEOregister.com and make sure you’re on the invitation list! We all deal with the emotion of anger every now and then. There's nothing wrong with that. But we don't have to work out our anger with other people. As leaders, sometimes we forget that we already command authority just because of our role - our title. We automatically carry the biggest stick, and arguing for us, is not a good look. It doesn't create a constructive culture, and I believe as leaders, there is no place for us to participate in that. Ever. So, let’s talk about how not to indulge an arguer – and how not to be one ourselves. What you'll learn from this episode: Much of our perspective about how to communicate comes from our family of origin. What’s considered “arguing.” What to do in that moment – instead of indulging the “arguer.” How to deal with someone on the team who is an arguer. What to do if you are the arguer. Arguing as a form of manipulation. I'd really appreciate it if you would click the like button above and leave a review if your favorite podcast app has that ability. Thank you! Today I’m sharing an important observation I’ve made from numerous clients over the years. It’s a phrase that we most likely all use. It’s insidious, and it’s ineffective. And the chances are extremely good that eliminating it from your vocabulary will have a positive impact on your team and your ability to get the results you want. What you'll learn from this episode: What the insidious phrase is. Why this phrase puts your employees in the position of being responsible for YOUR emotional health. How this phrase reminds you and your employees that they're in charge. A suggestion for a more productive phrase to use instead. There’s a real difference between being a solopreneur and being an entrepreneur. A solopreneur is a worker and it’s mostly about “me.” They do all the work in the business. An entrepreneur is a producer / manager. These people have a team and running the business is more about “we.” The trick is learning how to make that transition from a “me” to a “we.” Let’s talk about how! What you'll learn from this episode: In entrepreneurship, we start to leverage the assets of others. Entrepreneurship is managing people. This is when we start to build systems and replicate-able processes. Making the transition has nothing to do with company size – it’s mindset. Solopreneur boundary challenges are with clients. Entrepreneur boundary issues are with your staff / team, and the work. The importance of moving from “me center” to “we center.” The next podcast will be about transitioning from entrepreneurship to CEO. If your employees are wanting you to think for them and are relying on you to make all of the decisions for them, here are some suggestions for how to stop being that continuous crutch. What you'll learn from this episode: Kris’ recent commitment - “I will no longer make decisions that other people are capable of making.” Can you handle the failure if you let them make a decision? Your growth and your ability to scale and make more money in your business depends on your willingness to allow other people to fail. It depends on your willingness to tolerate other people’s mistakes. What you'll learn from this episode: You don’t have to give up tasks you love to do or that are your superpower. What the definition of “doing it wrong” is to female entrepreneurs. There are people who know how to do what you’ve been doing, and some can even do it better than you. Just because team members sometimes mess up doesn’t mean you dismiss the idea of having help. The investment you make in yourself to be able to learn how to hire, train, onboard, delegate and then hold people accountable - exponentially pays off in your company. When you are a leader and own a business, it’s not only okay to have expectations, it’s your responsibility to have them. But most female entrepreneurs that I work with usually wrangle with these three issues when it comes to expectations. What you'll learn from this episode: The three main issues that female entrepreneurs wrangle with when it comes to expectations. Many female entrepreneurs think that their expectations are too. The Olive Garden analogy. Many women think it’s selfish to 1) expect things to be done and 2) to want them done in a certain way. Female entrepreneurs tend to worry about what other’s expect of them. This self-evaluative judgement is not useful; it drags you down. Guilt is not useful. Why every female entrepreneur needs a coach. When you have one employee who’s bringing your company’s performance down, the impact on the team is very noticeable. Here’s why that one person is standing between you and total magic. What you'll learn from this episode: Once you remove the negative energy from your business and brain you create all kinds of space for something new. If that person hasn’t grown with the business, they’re almost like a memory of who you were when you started, and that’s not who you are today. It keeps you stuck energetically. When you let that person go and create room in your business, then you can get intentional about what you want to create and the results you want to achieve. You have to learn the processes to follow, the words to say, the conversations to have in order to foster the change necessary to get you where you need to be. The only way to learn things you don’t know, and to gain an understanding of them, is to be willing to tolerate and sit with discomfort. It doesn’t mean you have to agree. It means you have the opportunity to listen, to stretch and to grow. What you'll find in this episode: Why it’s so important to get out of the echo chamber. Pay attention to how you feel. If someone introduces you to something and you feel repulsed, indignant, angry, resentful – pay attention. Find new teachers, thought leaders and discussion groups. Who do you want to be as a leader? When your presence is unfelt, someone else’s will be, and they will control the message and direction of your business. You have a voice whether you’re aware of it or not. So my recommendation is - let’s be aware of it. What you'll find in this episode: Why having a clear sense of direction for your company and what you want to achieve is essential. The heart of the voice is that it has a line to it. It creates clarity. You must be willing to have the consequences and the benefits of that voice. When your presence is unfelt, someone else’s will be. If someone doesn’t want to align to your voice and your vision for your business, let them go. My thoughts for myself as it relates to my voice. High-performing leaders with high-performing teams are able to replicate that over and over again. That’s not luck; that’s a system, and here are the elements of that system for building high-performing teams. What you'll find in this episode: As a leader, you have to have your own expectations of high performance. You have to be self-aware. You have to understand who you are and how you affect the team. Recognize that there is a process to attracting great talent. You must be clear with what you expect of people who work for you. Additionally, there’s the accountability piece – you have to take ownership. Think about what you do and why you hire the people that you hire. You have to be building a team for where you’re going and not for where you’ve been. A high-performing team attracts high-performing players. This requires a leader who is willing to audit her team and trim it when necessary. Here's how the “re-offer” can help. In order to build a team performance culture, you have to have a mindset around why you are adding people to your business that supports what you’re trying to do in the long term. Your culture is not driven from the bottom up. It’s driven from you down. What you'll find in this episode: How knowing your vision, values and expectations comes into play. What you'll find in this episode: What do people think about when they think about you? We all have habits, behaviors or expressions that are not helping our presence. Are you keeping those parts about you around out of spite - or out of fear because you don’t know how to change it? Power of voice. Power of presence. Power of appearance. Spend some time this week paying attention to yourself. Your presence is a silent asset. Don’t contrive or fake it. Be conscious and tap into your superpowers. Let’s talk about the five types of expectations women should have and implement in their businesses. By setting clear expectations, leaders can do a better job of achieving improved results and holding their team members accountable. What you'll find in this episode: The manual is a set of rules that you have for other people that you believe are true and that you hold other people to. Expectations are those behaviors that you expect of people who work for you that are based on the values of your business -- and you DO communicate them. Standards are measurable policies and rules. They’re black and white and are born out of the values and expectations. Key performance measures for every role in your company. Individual goals. The majority of the issues we have in a business, when it comes to “team,” is behavior, not skill set. You have to set expectations regarding behavior because that also sets the tone for your culture. Visit: The Lead Your Team Podcast for show notes and available downloads. © 2020 Kris Plachy
