In episode 22, Johnny talks to music supervisor, movie producer and music manager Tarquin Gotch. Tarquin's career saw him rise to Head of A&R at Arista Records in the 1980s - overseeing acts like The Thompson Twins, Simple Minds, The Stray Cats, and The Beat. He then moved to Warners, transitioning Prince, Madonna and many other American acts into the UK. Moving into music management he oversaw The Beat, Stephen Duffy, The Dream Academy, Hugh Harris, General Public, XTC, Roger McGuinn from the Byrds and Jon Lord from Deep Purple. In a chance encounter in 1984, through his actress and model friend Kelly LeBrock, Tarquin met writer-director John Hughes on the set of Weird Science. He went on to become music supervisor on the John Hughes films Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, She's Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck. Running John Hughes' film company in the 1990s, Tarquin executive produced the films Curly Sue, Dutch, Only The Lonely, and Home Alone. He has since produced both film and TV including the 1998 film Still Crazy, the TV series Crocodile Shoes with Jimmy Nail, the documentary series Cars That Rock with Brian Johnson, and the return of prison sitcom Porridge for the BBC. Tarquin currently manages Brian Johnson of AC/DC, and founding members of the Police, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. Johnny's talk with Tarquin covers his work curating Life Moves Pretty Fast, a boxset celebrating the music of John Hughes soundtracks, released on Demon Records in 2022. They discuss Tarquin's time working alongside John Hughes and John Candy, his process of putting songs in front of John Hughes for consideration, and which composer he believes revolutionised the art of film scoring. This conversation was recorded online at the beginning of February 2024. Thanks to James Van As who wrote and performed the brilliant music (check out James' Loco Looper game) and to Willow Van As who designed the amazing artwork and provided general podcast support. 530. Katy Morlas Shannon returns to talk about her children's historical fiction, Sharcropper's Daughter. "Born a sharecropper's daughter on a Louisiana plantation, Frances Darbonne wonders if she will ever escape the rural poverty that has plagued her family for generations. When Frances learns that going to school requires her to abandon the French language she has spoken all her life, she struggles to reconcile her Cajun identity with her desire to read and write. Determined to Americanize its citizens, Louisiana instructs its educators to eradicate this heritage language, stigmatizing the Cajun people and using shame and threats of violence to silence them... Inspired by the author's grandmother, Sharecropper's Daughter vividly portrays a child's experience of World War II and prominently features the Louisiana Maneuvers, the military training of 400,000 troops not far from Frances's home." This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris from The Kooks. Their debut album Inside In/Inside Out is a classic of the era and brought the boys huge success, with tracks like Naive being played everywhere in the mid '00s - and the love for that band was recently underlined at some standout anniversary shows. We chat to Luke and Hugh about how the album came together and the No1 follow up album Konk, right through to their upcoming new album 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark, three songs of which have been released as an EP: Connection – Echo in the Dark, Pt. 1. From inter-band rivalries and in-band frictions to what keeps driving them on and why they believe their best album is yet to come, there's loads covered in the pod - and lots of laughs too! Trevor and Hugh discuss this quote by Christopher Hitchens. The Russians are going to be expansionist whether we provoke them to it or not. For example, the Russians keep saying that we're trying to encircle them. In what sense does the independence of Kosovo, a land-locked province, former Yugoslavia, with no common border with Russia, threaten Russia with encirclement? In what sense does the independence of the Baltic states - which the Soviets gained as territory in a deal with Hitler, a direct bargain between Stalin and Hitler - would it constitute an encirclement? This is insulting. In what sense does the independence of Georgia constitute an encirclement? What we are facing, and we may as well give it its right name, is what I called it earlier, a chauvinistic, theocratic in part, xenophobic Russian imperialism.

After a five month hiatus, Couch Surfing returns to the Sofa Dogs podcast! Nick Jimenez joins the celebration for a jam packed episode, filled with over two hours of content.00:07:00 - Nick recommends The Goods as at least a solid rental comedy, but he loved Funny People to bits.00:20:35 - John sings the praises of the short-lived series, The Middleman.00:22:34 - There's also warm nostalgia for Parker Lewis Can't Lose.00:29:48 - John enjoyed The Guild's music video, "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar?", NIck, not so much.00:32:48 - Hot Tub Time Machine sounds like a potentially wacky love letter to the 80s'. We are so there. This leads into a discussion of the Internet Movie Database and the Top Ten Films of The Decade.00:45:02 - Catching up on ancient emails, Hayden has a theory about Geek By Night. John and Nick try their best to clarify some things.00:53:03 - Nick advises towards patience on the internet, while lamenting how podcasting can sometimes feel like work.01:12:32 - Marshal has finished the Dead Like Me franchise and loved it, but did not care for the film.01:19:32 - John is still occasionally giving Alias a chance, having watched a handful of episodes from season 3. It didn't go over well but the episode, "Conscious" was amazing.NOTE: Feel free to stop the podcast here, as there's much internet drama ahead. It's understandable to tune out at this point.01:23:42 - The last email of the episode first requires some back story, concerning Geekshow.us and the death of John Hughes.01:27:14 - Kristen Stewart or Kat Dennings? Do you care?01:38:59 - It's apparently not common knowledge that Drag Me To Hell made a nice chunk of change. Some are even in denial about such news.01:47:54 - John weighs the pros and cons of big, sensational summer blockbusters, like Transformers 2.01:57:40 - John has hate mail. Confusion sets in as he tries to understand the minds of those who write such bile.02:09:02 - Nick closes things out with some positive recommendations of his favorite podcasts. The following artists can be heard in this episode:Telefon Tel Aviv & Danny DeVito, Metric, Staind, Taxi Doll, Flo Rida & Katy Perry, Eminem, The Submarines, The Martinis, MC Lars, Joe Strummer, Stars, 12 Rounds, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Glasvegas, Beck, Charles Ives, Groove Armada, Owen Pallett, Peace Orchestra, Gary Chang, Young MC, Army Navy, Hugh Harris, Tears For Fears, INXS, Radiohead, Phil Collins, Splashdown, Beirut and Dianogah.
