Often compared to modern slavery, trafficking in human beings destroys individuals' lives by depriving people of their dignity, their freedom, and their rights. Yet trafficking in human beings remains a largely hidden crime. In the EU, more than 20,000 victims were registered in 2023–2024, while many more remain invisible. Trafficking is a serious threat to security, closely linked to organised crime and generating enormous profits, with low risks for criminals. It affects women, men, and children in a wide range of sectors and takes different forms; including sexual and labour exploitation, forced criminality, and forced begging. It requires a comprehensive approach from prevention to prosecution of traffickers, while protecting the victims and working closely with partners from the private sector and non-EU countries. Against this backdrop, the IIEA host a keynote address by the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Diane Schmitt, offering insights into the latest trends, challenges, and action needed, as well as an opportunity to exchange views on this pressing issue. Moreover, this discussion fits into in the Irish Presidency's priorities to deliver on European competitiveness, values, and security, in addition to occurring at a particularly timely moment, as the EU will have a renewed EU Strategy on Combatting Trafficking in Human Beings before end of 2026. Combatting trafficking in human beings requires a comprehensive approach to prevent the crime, protect the victims and bring perpetrators to justice. Diane Schmitt was appointed EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator in July 2021 to contribute to this approach, improve coordination and coherence among EU institutions, EU agencies and Member States, cooperate with international actors and support the implementation and development of EU policies in this area. This appointment follows a long career in the European Commission, where Diane Schmitt held different strategic positions, including in the area of migration, security, and justice.

When did being human become so completely attached to what we accomplish, produce, achieve, fix, finish, and prove? In this free-associative episode of The Power of Self-EVOLUTION, I explore something I have been recognizing through my ongoing research into Silent Burnout: We have become a society of Human Doings rather than Human Beings. Many highly driven, high-functioning people never stop doing long enough to recognize how exhausted, disconnected, or internally depleted they have become. And because they are still functioning—still working, producing, handling responsibilities, and getting things done—it may never occur to them that they are experiencing burnout. That is what makes Silent Burnout so silent. In this episode, I connect the dots between our relentless drive to accomplish and the gradual loss of our relationship with Self. Takeaways and Aha Moments Your identity can become unconsciously attached to what you do. When your value comes primarily from achievement, productivity, and accomplishment, simply being can begin to feel uncomfortable or even unproductive. Silent Burnout does not always look like falling apart. You can continue functioning at an extremely high level while feeling mentally exhausted, emotionally disconnected, internally flat, or as though you are simply going through the motions. Doing more is not always the solution. Sometimes the constant need to keep moving, solving, producing, and accomplishing is part of what prevents us from recognizing what is actually happening inside of us. Success and internal fulfillment are not the same thing. You can be outwardly successful while becoming increasingly disconnected from your own Sense-of-Self. Our greatest strengths can flip into weaknesses when they are overused. Drive, ambition, responsibility, discipline, and perseverance are extraordinary strengths—until they become unconscious ways of overriding exhaustion, emotion, and internal truth. Being still can reveal what constant activity has been covering up. When the doing stops, we may finally recognize how we actually feel, what we truly want, and whether the life we have built still reflects who we are. The deeper question is not only, "What am I accomplishing?" It is also: Who am I becoming? What is all of this doing costing me? And do I still feel fully alive inside the life I have created? I am currently conducting research interviews with founders and entrepreneurs as I continue studying the internal experience of Silent Burnout. What if the face you call “me” is only the mask God wears while experiencing limitation? Carl Jung warned that the persona can become so convincing that consciousness forgets the deeper Self beneath it. Paramahansa Yogananda described the human being as a wave of the divine ocean, carrying the nature of the source while mistaking temporary form for separate existence. Krishnamurti exposed the prison of psychological identification. Bernardo Kastrup asks whether mind may be more fundamental than matter. Place those pressures together and a terrifying possibility appears. Humanity may not merely contain divine fragments. Humanity may be the countless faces through which one consciousness enters history, culture, race, memory, wound, desire, and death. The ego names the face, defends the face, and demands that the face remain. Childhood becomes the potter's hand. Attachment hardens the clay. Identity calls the shape eternal. Then what is the devil? Could the devil be the force that convinces the wave it exists apart from the ocean? Could hell be the psychic and metaphysical territory created by everything the sacred mask refuses to own? Could possession, clinging, projection, domination, and resistance to reality be the instruments that keep divine consciousness trapped inside a temporary identity? And what happens in relationship when one mask cannot see the divine behind another? The partner becomes mother, father, rescuer, betrayer, possession, or enemy. The present becomes a courtroom for childhood. Love becomes a demand that another person protect the identity we are afraid to question. This inquiry does not ask whether you believe in God or the devil. It asks whether your identity has become the god you serve, whether your shadow has become the hell you export, and whether self-realization begins when the mask finally recognizes the face beneath every face, including whoever you were taught to hate.

Hundreds of detained people launched a hunger and labor strike at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, over Memorial Day weekend to protest inhumane conditions at the immigration detention facility run by the for-profit company GEO Group. Protesters flocked to the scene to echo detainees' pleas for release and better conditions — and were met with brutal tactics from federal, local, and state law enforcement officials, who beat, tear-gassed, and arrested protesters.“Detainees are raising that they have no access to quality medical care, that they're not getting needed medications,” Andrea Sáenz, a former federal appellate immigration judge who was fired by the Trump administration last year, tells The Intercept Briefing. “They don't have enough food to eat. The food that they are getting is spoiled. They're facing hostility and harassment and violence from the guards.” This week on the podcast, host Jessica Washington speaks to Sáenz and Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior policy fellow at the American Immigration Council, about the conditions at the 1,000-bed jail and other detention centers across the country. The Trump administration has restricted members of Congress and state officials from oversight of federal immigration detention centers. “ICE doesn't want people to see the way that they're treating human beings in these facilities,” says Sáenz. Intercept reporter Noah Hurowitz, who covers federal law enforcement and immigration, was on the scene at Delaney Hall on Monday.
