This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, tackles a silent struggle many first responders face: hyper-vigilance that doesn't switch off when the shift ends. On the job, scanning for threats is survival (Amazon Affiliate). But at home, that same mindset can turn into exhaustion, irritability, and disconnection. We explore what hyper-vigilance looks like in everyday family life, why it's so hard to shake, and how to retrain your nervous system so peace doesn't feel like danger. 5 Examples of Hyper-Vigilance at Home Constantly Scanning the Environment Always checking locks, windows, and exits—even in your own living room. Startle Responses to Everyday Sounds Jumping at noises like a slammed door or a child's toy dropping to the floor. Difficulty Relaxing in Public Spaces Choosing seats with a view of exits and never letting your guard down, even at a restaurant. Emotional Distance From Family Remaining “on duty” mode at home makes it hard to fully connect with your spouse or kids. Chronic Restlessness or Insomnia The nervous system stays on alert, robbing you of sleep and recovery. 5 Ways to Combat Hyper-Vigilance Practice Grounding Techniques Use deep breathing, mindfulness, or body scans to bring your nervous system back to calm. Create Safe Home Rituals Intentionally shift from “on duty” to “at home” with habits like changing clothes, showering, or a short walk after work. Communicate With Family About What's Happening Explain why you might seem distracted or tense, so loved ones don't misinterpret your distance. Limit Over-Stimulation at Home Turn off constant news feeds or radio chatter that keep your mind in a state of alert. Seek Professional Support When Needed Therapy, peer groups, or chaplains trained in responder culture can help you reset patterns that feel automatic.
In this episode, Cindy Esliger challenges the mindset that the need to rest, recharge, and reset is an indulgence: it is a necessity. Constant burnout and chronic stress are not normal. We can't sustain staying in survival mode forever. So how do we recognize the signs of being on the brink of a crash? How do we break the burnout cycle? Cindy defines what we should feel like when rested and explains how to stop seeing exhaustion as a badge of honor. It's time to abandon chronic stress for a healthy reset. Rest and reset, as defined by Cindy, is not just booking a beach vacation. It's about resetting our nervous system so we're not constantly running on fumes. And it means viewing rest not as something earned after being productive, but as a necessary function of success. She outlines three common triggers that keep us locked in survival mode: 1. Scarcity of recognition, 2. Unequal workloads, and 3. The ‘do more with less' culture.Cindy identifies five common warning signs of being forever on the brink of burnout: 1. Constant exhaustion, 2. Everything feels overwhelming 3. Emotional reactivity, 4. Joy feels like a distant concept, and 5. Forgetfulness and brain fog. Why do all those things feel normal in our lives right now? They're not. Rest is not a reward for productivity; it's a biological necessity. Cindy asks us to identify the kind of rest we need: 1. Physical rest, 2. Emotional rest, 3. Creative rest, 4. Social rest, or 5. Sensory rest. When we can identify that, we can follow her guide to restoration and reset.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Pressing PauseAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A direct, practical conversation on using Yoga Nidra and guided meditation to reset an overworked nervous system, shift out of chronic fight-or-flight, and rebuild identity after trauma. Danielle Matthews unpacks how accepting “what is,” inserting clear intentions in the Nidra state, and consistent practice can improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and cultivate steady presence. We examine mental “tigers” created by news, social feeds, and deadlines, and how Inner Reset–style practices help you respond instead of react—without mystical fluff or medical claims. About the guest Danielle Matthews is a Yoga Nidra and yoga therapy practitioner who rebuilt her life after a traumatic brain injury. Her work focuses on nervous system regulation, intention-led practice, and practical tools for peace under pressure. She leads private and group sessions and an “Inner Reset” series. Key takeaways: Acceptance precedes change: reality (external event) + your internal response = your lived experience; shift the internal variable first. Yoga Nidra is “meditation made easy”: lie down, follow guidance, and let breath/body-scan sequences guide brainwaves toward deep rest. Immediate benefits many notice: better sleep, fewer escalations of migraines/anxiety, and more emotional space to choose responses. Chronic stress today is driven by “mental tigers” (worry loops, news, social feeds). Without deliberate down-regulation, cortisol stays high and resilience drops. Intention inside Nidra matters: plant a precise way-of-being (e.g., “I am at peace amidst chaos”) while beneath habitual thought; it resurfaces in daily stressors. Consistency beats intensity: short, regular guided sessions build capacity faster than occasional long sits. Use Nidra to complement—not replace—medical care; it's a behavioral practice for regulation and awareness. Skeptical or “not a meditator”? Start with a comfortable 15–20-minute guided Nidra lying down; no special posture or prior experience needed. Are you feeling constantly on edge, exhausted, or tense, even when life seems calm?
Your body can't always tell the difference between a painful memory and a present threat—and that's why a passing thought can hijack your day. We invited educator and creator Larry Hooks to unpack how trauma shapes the nervous system, why triggers feel so immediate, and how simple daily practices can teach your body a safer pattern. From faith-filled self-talk to practical breathwork and boundaries, we map a path out of the loop of alarm toward a steadier, kinder baseline.Larry shares decades of experience exploring neuroplasticity and the metaphysical aspects of healing, pairing them with Scripture and lived wisdom. We talk about reframing identity from victim to overcomer, why perspective changes physiology, and how to challenge intrusive narratives by speaking truth out loud. You'll hear concrete ways to spot whether you need a nap or a reset, why Sabbath is a nervous system skill and not a reward, and how dissociation, anxiety, and anger are protection strategies that can be retrained with patience and consistency. We also get honest about community. Condemnation keeps people stuck; trauma-informed spaces create room for story, listening, and co-regulation. When calm, safe people share the weight of vigilance, your nervous system doesn't have to hold everything alone. If you've wrestled with triggers, doom-thinking, or the guilt of rest, this conversation offers tools that are both spiritual and practical: breath you can count, words you can say, and a lens that helps your body expect good again. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review to help others find it. This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes an honest look at something few talk about out loud: missing the chaos (Amazon Affiliate). After years of answering high-stakes calls, many first responders find that calm feels strange—or even unsafe. When your nervous system has been wired to thrive in crisis, silence can be unsettling. We break down why this happens, how it affects life at home, and what you can do to regulate your nervous system so peace doesn't feel like a threat. 1. Why Chaos Feels Normal After Years in the Field The brain learns to crave adrenaline surges from constant exposure to stress. High-alert environments make “calm” feel foreign and even suspicious. 2. The Emotional Whiplash of Returning Home How the sudden drop from adrenaline leaves you restless or irritable. Why family time can feel empty or flat after a chaotic shift. 3. The Hidden Cost of Craving Crisis Always seeking stimulation can damage relationships and lead to burnout. When calm moments feel uncomfortable, it robs you of joy outside the job. 4. Signs Your Nervous System Is Stuck in Overdrive Trouble relaxing or sleeping. Constant multitasking, fidgeting, or picking fights for stimulation. Feeling flat or emotionally numb during peaceful moments. 5. How to Rewire for Peace Without Losing Your Edge Using tactical breathing, grounding exercises, or mindfulness after a shift. Gradually reintroducing calm routines so they feel safe again. Building hobbies and activities that offer healthy stimulation. Talking openly with loved ones about what you're experiencing. Seeking professional support to reset your baseline over time.
When everything around you feels loud, fast, and overwhelming, sometimes the best thing you can do is stop, and get in cold water. In this episode, Lyndsay Soprano is joined by Kris Rice for a conversation about nervous system healing, resilience, and how cold therapy became a lifeline for navigating chaos.Kris shares her journey of creating the ChillPod—a luxury cold immersion system designed to make cold plunging feel empowering, accessible, and deeply restorative, especially for women. She and Lyndsay unpack how cold exposure doesn't just reduce inflammation or nerve pain, it rewires how you respond to stress, helps you come back to your body, and reminds you that you're stronger than your worst days. They talk about setting intentions, listening to your body, and creating space for stillness when the world keeps pushing you to hustle. Whether it's cold plunging, breathwork, or simply being honest about what you need, this episode is a nudge toward choosing calm, even when everything feels like chaos.Tune in if you're ready to reset your system, reclaim your calm, and start building a wellness practice that actually works for you.Find Kris Rice Online Here:Website: thechillpod.coInstagram: @thechillpod.coLinkedIn: Kris RiceFind The Pain Game Podcast Online Here:Website: thepaingamepodcast.comInstagram: @thepaingamepodcastFacebook: The Pain Game PodcastLinkedIn: Lyndsay SopranoYouTube: The Pain Game PodcastEpisode Highlights:(00:00) Introduction to Chronic Pain and Healing(02:45) The Importance of Nervous System Reset(06:48) Chris Rice's Journey to Cold Therapy(09:52) Understanding Cold Exposure and Its Benefits(13:07) Cold Therapy for Chronic Pain Relief(16:33) Designing ChillPod for Women and Accessibility(20:56) Integrating Cold Therapy into Daily Life(25:19) Supporting Caregivers and Mental Health(29:13) Conclusion and Call to Action

Sometimes Spirit asks us to expand before we're ready. And when we resist, receiving what we desire can feel so much harder than it needs to be. You've repeated the affirmations. Tried to reframe the mindset. But what if the problem isn't your thinking — it's the identity underneath? In this episode, we go deeper than positivity. Let's recalibrate to truth. You've done the mindset work — but something still feels off. This episode uncovers why positive thinking can't fix what identity misalignment creates. Julie Holly walks through neuroscience, faith, and lived experience to explain why true transformation requires more than mantras. It requires Identity-Level Recalibration. When your thoughts align with who you really are, everything starts to change — from the inside out. What We Explore in This Episode:• Why mindset work sometimes leaves high achievers stuck• How your brain filters truth through identity-based beliefs• The hidden ceiling of positive thinking and affirmations• A personal story of choosing depth over hustle in business• What Pharrell's LEGO documentary reveals about identity evolution• The nervous system's resistance to thoughts that feel “foreign”• Why truth leads to transformation — not just temporary motivation• What it looks like to build from alignment instead of adrenalineToday's Micro-RecalibrationWhat's one thing you've tried to “think positive” about — but still don't believe?Ask yourself:• Is this something I'm forcing… or something I'm ready to integrate?• What would this truth sound like if it were anchored in my identity?• Where am I asking my brain to believe something my body still fears?Try this identity anchor:“I am becoming the kind of person whose truth runs deeper than fear — and whose clarity speaks louder than performance.”It's not about forcing new thoughts. It's about building the identity that can hold them.If this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. You've let go of who you were — but haven't fully become who you're becoming. This tender in-between space can feel disorienting. In this episode, we talk about how to hold that stretch with honesty, grace, and strength. There's a sacred stretch in growth — the space between the “no longer” and the “not yet.”This episode invites you into the tender terrain of identity shift, where clarity is forming but hasn't fully arrived. Julie Holly shares personal insight and nervous system wisdom to help you stay grounded in the in-between. You don't have to force clarity. You just have to stay honest — and keep becoming. This is Identity-Level Recalibration: where transformation meets truth. What We Explore in This Episode:• Why growth often feels confusing after a breakthrough• The emotional and neurological tension of the in-between• A personal story about feeling different in familiar spaces• The difference between identity drift and identity shift• Why your nervous system resists even positive change• How to name what's true without rushing to fix it• What real leadership looks like in uncertain seasons• How honesty becomes holy ground in identity-level transformationToday's Micro-RecalibrationAsk yourself:• Where am I currently in the in-between?• What identity have I outgrown — and what's still forming?• Can I name what's real without needing to explain or resolve it?Try this identity anchor:“I am becoming the kind of person who can hold the in-between with honesty, grace, and gentle strength.”This isn't the end — it's a sacred middle.Let yourself be here.If this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. I draw inspiration from Johnny Miller, whose poignant narrative about losing his fiancée, Sophie, highlights the profound lessons that grief can impart. Through his experiences, we explore the concept that grief is not merely an inconvenience to be avoided, but rather a natural, and at times, beautiful aspect of our humanity. By embracing our emotions fully, we can transform grief into a source of guidance, prompting us to reconnect with life's deeper meanings.I emphasize that allowing grief to flow through us rather than resisting it can be therapeutic. When we allow ourselves to feel and experience our emotions, we prevent the buildup of what Johnny describes as emotional debt. This episode encourages listeners to practice feeling grief in its raw form, without the burdensome narratives we often attach to it. By adopting simple rituals—like lighting a candle, walking in nature, or even taking a moment to sit in stillness—we can create spaces for our emotions and enable them to move through us naturally. We discuss the power of simultaneous grief and joy, a lesson I have come to learn personally through my own losses. I stress that experiencing these conflicting emotions is not a sign of weakness; instead, it is through the cultivation of resilience that we find the ability to recover more swiftly from life's challenges. The goal is not to escape discomfort but to learn to navigate it with grace.During a guided visualization towards the episode's climax, I invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences of loss. This practice serves as a gentle reminder that grief can manifest in various forms, often leading to feelings of being unmoored or uncertain about one's identity. I encourage listeners to welcome their emotions, suggesting that when we sit with our feelings—rather than pushing them away—we learn more about ourselves and the depth of our humanity.#GriefHealing #EmotionalWellness #NervousSystemReset #MindBodyHealing #EmotionalIntelligence #Resilience #PodcastCommunity #SelfCareJourney #TraumaInformed #MentalHealthMatters #HealingJourney #EmotionalFluidity #SomaticHealing #CopingStrategies #PersonalGrowth #MindfulnessPractice #Acceptance #VulnerabilityIsStrength #SelfCompassion #InnerPeace #NervousSystemRegulation #EmotionalAwareness #AdaptAndOvercome #EmbraceChange #TrustYourBody #StressRelief #HolisticHealth #SpiritualAwakening #TransformativeJourney #AnxietyCoachesPodcast #GinaRyan #JonnyMiller #GaborMate #TheMythOfNormal #ACPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Send us a textHave you ever found yourself giving 100% to so many areas of your life that the math simply doesn't add up? That breaking point where your body and mind finally say "enough" isn't a failure—it's a desperate call to reconnect with yourself. In this deeply resonant conversation, neuroscientist-turned-wellness coach Stephanie Pasniokas takes the mic as guest host to explore what happens when we push ourselves beyond sustainable limits. Together with Melissa, they unpack the biological reality of burnout, revealing how constant stress affects us at the cellular level, creating inflammation instead of energy.Melissa vulnerably shares her journey of complete disconnection—physically unable to feel pain from a broken toe, emotionally unable to access her feelings, and mentally stuck in loops of anxiety and perfectionism. Her story illuminates how the very traits that help us survive challenging seasons (like compartmentalizing emotions during her husband's military deployments) can become liabilities when they prevent us from experiencing a full, connected life.Perhaps most surprising is the revelation that many women find stillness and rest actively anxiety-producing. After living in constant motion, our nervous systems actually become comfortable with stress, making calm feel strange and threatening. This explains why you might find yourself filling every quiet moment with activity, even when you're exhausted.Through Melissa's "Peace Restoration Method," we discover that reconnecting with ourselves doesn't happen all at once. It's a dance between mental and physical healing, between identifying harmful beliefs and creating new patterns. The key insight? We must feel to heal—and when we shut down difficult emotions, we inadvertently block joy and excitement too.If you're feeling depleted, disconnected, or simply unable to remember who you are beneath all your responsibilities, this conversation offers both validation and hope. Healing is possible, even if your path doesn't involve moving to a tropical island. To be honest, I am feeling overwhelmed. On the outside, I am discouraged by endless news of our warmongering and dysfunctioning government. On the inside, I am still processing the years of intense social isolation during the pandemic, with no work prospects, after a vibrant pre-pandemic career and social life. I am hyper-vigilant and jumpy. Creatively, I feel uninspired. I find it difficult and awkward to socialize, sleep, or even rest. During periods of overwhelm, the best thing I can do for myself is to let my parasympathetic nervous system take over. This is the part of our nervous systems responsible for our 'rest and reset'. In today's meditation, we calm our nervous system. This podcast is made possible with great thanks to our subscribers on Patreon. Join our community at Patreon (dot) com (slash) theMeditationPodcast
