In ‘a wonderful book about looking and learning' (Gavin Francis) retired GP Iona Heath relates the importance that John Berger's work and friendship had on her working life as a doctor in a deprived London borough. Five decades of engagement with Berger's work and twenty years of friendship with the man himself made her, she is convinced, a better doctor. Heath was in conversation about Berger's legacy, for medicine and beyond, with film director and screenwriter Sally Potter, who wrote, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, ‘[John Berger] reminds us how to think about Charlie Chaplin, how to listen to songs, how to rage about prisons, how to remember that everything matters.' Recovery and convalescence are words that exist at the periphery of our lives – until we are forced to contend with what they really mean. Here, GP and writer Gavin Francis explores how – and why – we get better, revealing the many shapes recovery takes, its shifting history and the frequent failure of our modern lives to make adequate space for it. Characterised by Francis's beautiful prose and his view of medicine as ‘the alliance of science and kindness', Recovery is a book about a journey that most of us never intend to make. Along the way, he unfolds a story of hope, transformation, and the everyday miracle of healing.

For many of us, time spent in recovery—from a broken leg, a virus, chronic illness, or the crisis of depression or anxiety—can feel like an unwelcome obstacle on the road to health. Modern medicine too often assumes that once doctors have prescribed a course of treatment, healing takes care of itself. But recovery isn't something that “just happens.” It is an act that we engage in and that has the potential to transform our lives, if we can find ways to learn its rhythms and invest our time, energy, and participation. Drawing on thirty years of medicine, and on insights from practitioners, psychologists, and writers across history, physician Gavin Francis delivers a profound, practical, and deeply hopeful guide to recovery. Rejecting the idea that healing is passive, Recovery offers tools and wisdom for convalescence, and shows how tending to our bodies, environments, and perspectives can help us move through the landscape of illness—and come out the other side whole. RECOVERY is an expert guide to the secrets of recovering – showing why we need it and how to do it better. Rejecting the idea that healing is passive, RECOVERY offers tools and wisdom for convalescence, and shows how tending to our bodies, environments, and perspectives can help us move through the landscape of illness—and come out the other side whole.

Did you know that in the founding constitution of the World Health Organisation, health is defined as:“A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.” As someone who's lived with chronic conditions since I was a child, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what recovery can mean. In fact, I’ve even been through the (pretty common) experience of trying to heal myself. Our current cultural understanding of recovery is pretty linear. You get sick, you go to the doctor, they give you medication, perform an operation, or put you on a treatment regimen. Time passes, and you get better. Like, you fully get back to how you were before you got sick. Or, if you’re one of the unlucky ones, you don’t make it. But what if you have a long-term condition where a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being isn’t possible? Does recovery solely have to mean a total absence of ill-health? A little while back, I stumbled across a teeny tiny book called Recovery: The Lost Art of Convalescence. I read the whole thing in one very short sitting, and then messaged my producer Philly telling her I must interview its author, Dr. Gavin Francis. The book is a meditation on recovery and that’s what we’ll be exploring in this week’s episode of The Rest Room podcast. It asks the question: if recovery doesn’t have to be a total absence of ill health, what should we actually be thinking about? We hear from Dr. Francis about what recovery means to him, what needs to change to give people the best chance of recovery and about how our society isn’t set up to allow people the time they need to recover. We also consider the roles our own beliefs and nature play in our health, and how you might start to reimagine or re-write your story when you live with a long-term condition. It definitely gave me a lot to think about. I hope it will give you a lot to think about too. To listen, you can just click play at the top of the email, or you can listen on Apple, Spotify, Amazon and Google. After a little R&R we are back to chat all about the lost art of Convalescence. We tend to talk a lot about treatment of illness and injuries, but as a society have we forgotten the importance of recovery? Convalescence used to be a common concept but we don't hear a lot about it today. We are joined in this episode by Dr Gavin Francis, doctor and author. He talks about his book Recovery: the Lost Art of Convalescence, and why it is important to remember this aspect of management of illness and injury. He tells us how recovery can still be relevant even for people with long term illnesses and what it might be like to value it more in society. He also shares his experiences on recovery from COVID.We hope you enjoy this weeks conversation.

In conversation with Dr Jivitesh Vashisht (IASH, Edinburgh), Gavin discusses his experiences in Edinburgh and the islands of Orkney. When the pandemic arrived in our society he saw how it affected every walk of life: the anxious teenager, the isolated care home resident, the struggling furloughed worker and homeless ex-prisoner, all united by their vulnerability in the face of a global disaster. And he saw how the true cost of the virus was measured not just in infections, or deaths, or ITU beds, but in the consequences of the measures taken against it.

In this episode of The Advice Show podcast, reporter Nicola Blackburn speaks to Gavin Francis, CEO of Worthstone, a hub of impact investment resources for financial planners and advisers. Nicola and Gavin discuss how to navigate the convoluted world of ESG data, the place of 'transitioning' companies in ethical investors' portfolios and what could really be happening beneath a fund's surface. They also discuss incoming UK regulation that will mandate sustainability disclosures for asset managers, and Gavin has a think about why some advice firms are faster at integrating 'impact' considerations in to their practise than others. 'When a firm is committed to developing a solution for their clients in the area of sustainable investing, obviously there's a big question around the risk to the business in introducing a solution to their clients,' he says. 'That question of risk becomes greater, the greater the size of the organisation, because they're looking for consistency across their advisers.' Gavin also introduces Worthstone's portfolio impact reporting. Available to Worthstone subscribers, the tool provides advisers with 'impact metrics' for their chosen selection of funds and generates bespoke impact reports for clients.

Episode six of our National Advice Forum Podcast featuring Gavin Francis.
In Island Dreams, Gavin Francis examines our collective fascination with islands. He blends stories of his own travels with psychology, philosophy and great voyages from literature, shedding new light on the importance of islands and isolation in our collective consciousness. Comparing the life of freedom of thirty years of extraordinary travel from the Faroe Islands to the Aegean, from the Galapagos to the Andaman Islands with a life of responsibility as a doctor, community member and parent approaching middle age, Island Dreams riffs on the twinned poles of rest and motion, independence and attachment, never more relevant than in today's perennially connected world. Illustrated with maps throughout, this is a celebration of human adventures in the world and within our minds. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

If you fly often, it's only a matter of time before you hear those not so welcome words over the intercom: "Is there a doctor or medical professional aboard?" So, do you hit your flight attendant button, or wait for someone else to do it first? When you're stuck at 30,000 feet, options are limited. You might even feel a little like our past guest, Dr. Gavin Francis, serving as the only doctor available in a remote Antarctic research base. So what are your options? Who can you call for assistance? Is there medical equipment available? What are your legal risks and ethical responsibilities? How often does this stuff actually happen? Today we're going behind the scenes with Dr. Paulo Alves, global medical director for Medaire, a company contracted with most the world's commercial airlines to provide real-time medical assistance from their emergency command center in Phoenix, Arizona. If that's not exciting enough, they also specialize in emergency medical evacuations, crew training, and medical and security preparations for private jets, yachts and even cruise ships. It's a fascinating world many of us know very little about. With that said let's get started...

Name: Gavin Francis, MD Location: Edinburgh Scotland Specialty: General Practitioner, Emergency Medicine Dr. Gavin Francis is a general practitioner based in Edinburgh Scotland. He's also a prolific traveler and an incredibly talented writer. Today we're going the explore the 15 months Gavin served as the sole physician at Halley, the British research station in Antarctica. Gavin was it. With no medical team, no back up and pretty limited equipment, Gavin had to be ready for any medical emergency, large or small. During the winter months, Halley is completely cut off from the rest of the world. Ships can't enter, planes can't land and you won't see the sun until spring. It's hard to imagine being farther off the grid than this. Even the international space station has a Soyuz spacecraft ready for an emergency escape. His book, “Empire Antarctica” is an account of those 15 months spent at Halley. It's a fascinating story, and a beautifully written book for which he received the prestigious Scottish national book award. We all know plenty of doctors who also write. After reading his book, you may find that Gavin is a writer, who also practices medicine. Either way it was a real privilege to have him on. With that said, let's get started....
Gavin Francis qualified in medicine from Edinburgh in 1999, then spent ten years travelling, visiting all seven continents. He is the author of three books: True North, Travels in Arctic Europe (2008, 2010), Empire Antarctica, Ice, Silence & Emperor Penguins (2012) which was Scottish Book of the Year 2013 and shortlisted for the Costa, Ondaatje, Banff, & Saltire Prizes, & Adventures in Human Being (2015), which won Saltire Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2015. He lives and practises medicine in Edinburgh.
Dr Gavin Francis is a Scottish physician and award winning writer. He has practiced medicine across the globe from Africa, India, Greenland, the Arctic and Antartica. After a rigorous selection process he was chosen to be the sole physician for a 15 month period on the Halley Research station in Antartica. The Halley Research station is said to be harder evacuate a casualty in winter than the International Space Station. This is a fantastic conversation with a physician who has used the platform of medicine to do a spectacular range of activities across the world. We get into what the section process is like, what life is like acting totally unsupported as a physician and what 3 months of darkness feels like. We travel around the human body with GP Gavin Francis, venture into the operating theatre with surgeon Samer Nashef and join investigative reporter Jack Parlabane on the trail of ‘blade bitch'
What if we looked at the human body as a landscape, and mapped its features using a cartographer’s eye? That’s what Dr. Gavin Francis does in his new book, Adventures in Human Being: A Grand Tour from the Cranium to the Calcaneum (Basic Books, October 2015). On this episode of Modern Notion we dive into some…
We have a lifetime's association with our bodies, but for many of us they remain uncharted territory. In Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis leads the reader on a journey through health and illness, offering insights on everything from the ribbed surface of the brain to the secret workings of the heart and the womb; from the pulse of life at the wrist to the unique engineering of the foot. This podcast is produced and presented by Craig Barfoot, and first appeared on Ideas Books. Drawing on his own experiences as a doctor and GP, Gavin Francis blends first-hand case studies with reflections on the way the body has been imagined and portrayed over the millennia. If the body is a foreign country, then to practise medicine is to explore new territory: Francis leads the reader on an adventure through what it means to be human. Both a user's guide to the body and a celebration of its elegance, this book will transform the way you think about being alive, whether in sickness or in health. Published in association with Wellcome Collection.
Tom Sutcliffe explores health and well-being from the musings of a 17th century doctor to the latest research into psychosomatic illness. The GP, Gavin Francis celebrates the marvels of the human body while Hugh Aldersey-Williams looks back at the life of the celebrated and ever-curious doctor Sir Thomas Browne. The consultant neurologist Suzanne O'Sullivan accepts that telling a patient 'it's all in your head' is unhelpful, but how do you treat those whose symptoms are medically unexplained, and may well have an emotional cause? Charlie Howard runs a youth mental health charity which takes the health professionals out of the clinic and onto the streets, and involves young people at all levels of diagnosis and treatment. Producer: Katy Hickman.
On this week's Little Atoms, Neil Denny talks to Dr Gavin Francis about his latest book is Adventures in Human Being. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Matthew Sweet talks to Hugh Aldersey-Williams, Claire Preston and Gavin Francis about the mind-adventures of doctors in time and space. Sir Thomas Browne was a man fascinated by everything from nature to religion, to the shock of the new. How does his story resonate now?
