For this week's Latino USA, we're bringing you an episode from the newly released podcast series from WNYC Studios and Futuro Studios, La Brega, The Puerto Rican Experience in Eight Songs. Created by Nuyorican street kids in the mid-80s, freestyle music became the sound and story of second-generation Boricuas. Hip-hop and pop, Latin Caribbean rhythms and instruments, all came together in freestyle. The sound was ubiquitous in New York and later in Orlando, FL. Young Puerto Rican women became the face of the genre. They sang about love, heartbreak, and their sexual desires. In Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's “I Wonder If I Take You Home” —a huge hit in the genre— a young woman sings about that on her own terms and without shame, opening up mother-daughter conversations that weren't happening. You can subscribe to La Brega here.
Created on the streets by young Nuyoricans in the mid-1980s, freestyle music became the soundtrack for the lives of second-generation Puerto Ricans. Hip-hop and pop, Latin Caribbean rhythms and instruments — it all came together in freestyle. The sound was ubiquitous in New York, and later in Orlando, Florida, where many of these Boricuas were charting new ground and new lives across the diaspora. Artists, many of whom were young Puerto Rican women, ultimately became the face of the genre; and for the listeners that so resembled them, the music provided an opportunity to dance to the beat of someone who looked and sounded like them. Young freestyle artists sang about love, heartbreak, and their sexual desires. In Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's “I Wonder If I Take You Home” — one of the genre's biggest hits — a young woman sings about her sexual desire, on her own terms and without shame. As a Boricua born in the '90s, reporter Raquel Reichard didn't experience the freestyle explosion in real time, but she's felt its profound ripple effects. In this episode, we meet two mother-daughter duos — including Raquel and her mother — for whom “I Wonder if I Take You Home” is particularly special. The song opened intergenerational conversations around sexuality, respectability and empowerment, and while impacting their lives both personally and professionally, it also strengthened their relationships with each other. Learn more about the voices in this episode: • Stacey DiLiberto, lecturer at the University of Central Florida • Louie Ortiz-Fonseca, freestyle historian and former freestyle artist • Nic Lopez Rodriguez, DJ and performance studies scholar • Stephanie Loraine Piñeiro, Executive Director of Florida Access Network • Read Raquel Reichard's reporting on the history of birth control trials. • Watch the documentary "La Operación,” about the sterilization of Puerto Rican women during the 1950s and 60s. Our cover of “I Wonder If I Take You Home” is by the artist RaiNao, featuring IFE (out this April). Listen to our Spotify playlist, featuring music from this episode — and this season. We'll keep adding to it each week as new episodes come out. Special thanks this week to Zoe Colón, Angel Vendrell, Jackie and Emily Diaz, Richie Rosario, Cynthia Torres, DJ Dominick, and Maritza and Lizardo Reichard. Fact checking this season is by Istra Pacheco and María Soledad Dávila Calero. This season of La Brega is made possible by the Mellon Foundation.

Madonna is getting “Into The Groove”, whilst on “Holiday!”, she's such a “Material Girl”. But if like Huey Lewis And The News, you know “The Power Of Love”, you “Don't Stop The Dance”, as Bryan Ferry puts it now, do you? Before long you'll all be “Dancing In The Street” with Jagger and Bowie and then to top it off going all “Tarzan Boy” with Baltimora, and all the while The Cure are asking you to get "Close To Me". While we are on the subject, "I Can Dream About You", if I want. Dan Hartman said it was OK with my "Body and Soul" as long as I tell Mai Tai. Oo 'er, what would we get up to "I Wonder If I Take You Home", eh Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam? I would certainly make your "Body Rock", wouldn't I Maria Vidal? Stop "Holding Out For A Hero" Bonnie Tyler, cos "We Don't Need Another Hero", do we Tina Turner? I got your back though, like UB40 and Chrissie Hynde "I Got You Babe". I mean I can do this all day long, "Money For Nothing" like Dire Straits, so you better do as Princess says and "Say I'm Your Number 1" or else! I certainly won't be driving you home otherwise, you can ask The Cars if they'll "Drive", but if you ask me, you'll be on foot with Kate Bush "Running Up That Hill". So there! Enjoy. Lisa Velez always wanted to be a singer and that dream came true when the mighty Full Force production team plucked her from the dance clubs in her early teens (!) to sing the classic "I Wonder If I Take You Home". The mixture of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's performance and Full Force's production struck gold for a couple years when tracks like "Head to Toe" and "Lost in Emotion" also went on to be giant hits. Eventually the hits slowed down, but Lisa Lisa has never stopped performing. In here we talk about how she got discovered, what it was like being a teenager in that environment, what the challenges were as a woman in that environment, and her thoughts on the music. She couldn't be sweeter! https://www.thereallisalisa.com/
Noel catches up with Lisa Velez, better known as Lisa Lisa. The Hell's Kitchen native is one of ten children. She would sneak out of the house as she started her music career. There, she would meet Mike Hughes and Alex Moseley of Cult Jam and the rest is history. Lisa was the queen of freestyle before it was even a term, with hits such as "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Can You Feel the Beat?" and "All Cried Out." The band hit the mainstream with their second album, "Spanish Fly", topping the charts with "Head to Toe" and "Lost in Emotion."

This set, often referred to as the Urban mix, masterfully blends a selection of popular 80s dance music with one alternative dance mix and a handful of chart-topping pop tracks. Developing this mix involved two weeks of careful track selection and editing to achieve the perfect blend and feel. A standout feature is the innovative mashup of Grandmaster Flash's anti-drug song "White Lines" and Herbie Hancock's "Rock It"— a fusion that beautifully showcases the evolution of 80s dance music. This volume includes the irresistible rhythm of Janet Jackson's "Nasty," and the unforgettable beat of Rob Base & DJ EZ-Rock's "It Takes Two." There's the innovative fusion of rock and rap in Run-DMC's "Walk This Way," and the pioneering electro-funk sound of Herbie Hancock's "Rock It." The unforgettable melody of Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam's "I Wonder If I Take You Home" and the ultimate party anthem of Salt N Pepa's "Push It" ensure the mix embodies the essence of 80s dance music. Laid Back's "White Horse" and George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" deliver doses of synthesized beats that characterize the era, while Prince's "D.M.S.R." offers a taste of his unique fusion style. Lastly, Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" serves as a reminder of rap's humble beginnings before it exploded in the following decade. Each track in this compilation adds a unique flavor to the mix, crafting a rich and immersive 80s dance music experience. So, put on your dancing shoes, and enjoy this nostalgic trip back to the era that changed dance music forever. Until the next time...ENJOY!
