If democracy is a social contract, why don't we allow everybody who is willing to sign it? Why don't we have open borders for immigration? In their book "Streets of Gold: America's Untold Story of Immigrant Success," Princeton University's Leah Boustan and Stanford University's Ran Abramitzky provide insights from big data to explore how immigration shaped the United States by looking at the economic legacies of immigrants and their children. On this week's encore episode, hosts Luigi Zingales and Bethany McLean talk with Boustan to unpack how immigrants and their progeny have impacted jobs, wages, and housing prices for native-born Americans. Conversely, how do immigrants' countries of origin overcome obstacles to socioeconomic change when many of their most-motivated citizens leave? Can data move the U.S. immigration debate beyond the current border crisis?
Is the famed American Dream still attainable for the immigrants and working class of today? What made America the land of opportunity — and if it isn't the same anymore, what happened to it?Joining co-hosts Bethany and Luigi to discuss these questions is David Leonhardt, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of "Ours Was the Shining Future." In his book, Leonhardt describes what he calls today's "rough-and-tumble" capitalism and distinguishes its laissez-faire characteristics from a more bygone, democratic version. Charting shifts in manufacturing, labor power, and the perennial tension between immigration and wages, Leonhardt and our hosts deliberate over the ramifications of this story for progressive and populist movements in a tumultuous election year and offer potential pathways to rekindle the promise of prosperity and upward mobility.
Earlier this month, Joe Biden made his first visit to the southern United States border as President, after two years of back-and-forth over his administration's immigration policy. While the cost-benefit debate of immigration has always been politically contentious, a new book by economists Leah Boustan and Ran Abramitzky provides data and insight on how decades of immigration policy have shaped the United States over time.Luigi and Bethany sit with Boustan to unpack gender, country of origin, culture, and other cross-sectional variations in this data. How do immigrants and their succeeding generations impact the jobs, wages, and housing prices for the native-born? Conversely, who is left to make a change if all motivated people leave a country? Can data sway the immigration story beyond the border crisis?
Executive Producer Loren Steffy speaks with former Dallas journalist and two-time Peabody Award winner Byron Harris about his new podcast "When I Got Here".

Welcome to the Canadian Immigration Podcast. I decided to take a little time off to figure out how to do these podcasts properly. I had a lot of fun making the initial ones, but felt that if I was going to take this on in any serious way, I had better get things sorted out early on. So I spent some money on better audio equipment and created a new website to host the future podcasts I intend to share. www.canadianimmigrationpodcast.com. Everything has finally come together to allow me to release this podcast once and for all. I intend to offer practical advise on all things related to Canadian Immigration law, policy, and practice. In this episode, I explain why I created the Canadian Immigration Podcast, a little about who I really am, and conclude with my lofty plans for the future. In future episodes I will continue to answer listener questions related to Canadian Immigration. If you have a question, please go to my website and enter it through our audio "Ask an Immigration Question" widget, or alternatively drop me a message through our contact page. I'd love to hear from you. If you like what you hear, please leave comments. If you don't like what you hear, then by all means let me know as well. My goal is to create something that will allow me to share free information that people can trust related to Canadian immigration. I hope you enjoy this first of many weekly podcasts.
