News Screen-Printing Consultant Charlie Taublieb Helps Shop Create Scented T-Shirts Enid, Oklahoma-based Downtown Threads recently welcomed screen-printing consultant Charlie Taublieb of Taublieb Consulting into its space for some learning and improvement. To illustrate the unique capabilities in screen printing, Taublieb printed scented shirts. Before he visited Downtown Threads, he saw a Facebook post from Schieber about barbecue shirts, so he wanted to help take that print to the next level. “I called up a company I work with and asked them to send me some barbecue scent,” he tells the news outlet. “I dug through my artwork, pulled out a pig, added ‘Enid, OK BBQ' to it, and we added the scent into the ink.” The scent infuses with the ink and sticks around for about 15 washes. Taublieb and Scheieber opted to add studs and foils atop the print, creating the ultimate BBQ T-shirt.Equipment Zone announces a new, in-person training event called the “DTG & DTF Summer Camp,” held on July 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. News GILDAN ANNOUNCES CLOSING OF MEBANE DISTRIBUTION CENTER - In an announcement that was made earlier this month, Gildan Activewear stated its plans to close its Mebane, North Carolina distribution center by June 30th. It's a move that will affect 128 local employees but won't necessarily leave them out of a job. According to a press release shared on The Times News, a WARN Act notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Feb. 16th said the distribution center would permanently close by June 30, 2022. That specific facility houses the company's unbranded wholesale activewear apparel.Dad Joke: What noise does a witch's vehicle make?Broom Broom 2022 Apparel Trends Jay: Let's introduce our guests today! I hope this isn't too weird for you Aaron but I'm going to be one of the guests too! Am I breaking the rules? I hope so! But the good news is I invited some friends. Adrienne Palmer is editor-in-chief of Screen Printing and BIG Picture magazines. And Jeremy Picker is Creative Director and Founder at AMB3R Creative. Hey guys - what's going on?Aaron: You are breaking the rules, Jay, but I think we can make an exception. When I think of 2022 Apparel trends I think of Styles, Colors and even decorating techniques. Jay: You nailed it Aaron!! It is all three of those things and even the words that we choose to describe the styles, colors and decoration techniques. I was reminded of this when Vicki Ostrom, Futurist and Trend Analyst at SanMar and founder of Trendependent was sharing her wisdom on an education session for PromoKitchen. She shared a reference that I later looked up which was from Adobe called Creative Trends 2022. In that report, Adobe mentions, “The seriousness of life during the pandemic has taken its toll. Tired of the mundane and familiar, people are more carefree, high-spirited, and joyful as they seek re-connection, escape from boredom, and positivity in the new year.”Aaron: Carefree, joyful and seeking re-connection - those all make sense to me! What other trends are likely to have an impact on apparel Jay?Jay: Being active and getting outside has always been important. Studies have found people report a higher level of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure, and self esteem, and a lower level of tension, depression and fatigue after they have walked outside! I'm sure that's why research revealed exercising outdoors was the most popular fitness trend in 2021. That takes us to 2 very powerful trends that have carried over into 2022: to be outside AND to be active, walking and more involved in fitness. For specific examples of this, ASI recently released an apparel study (last month). The study is based on data that was analyzed in late 2021 using surveys of nearly 40,000 consumers. That data was presented in a collection of the most popular promo products in the U.S. and identifies which states and regions they're most influential in. Outerwear & Performance wear were number 1 and number 2 in every region!

Jay, what we really find on the internet is, “I couldn't get this to work, so here's my Bandaid.”Screen PrintingAll you need are 110 mesh screensFlash between colors for best resultsPinholes? Just put more emulsion on it!There is a perfect white ink. You just have to find it!DTGSave money, use Teflon sheetsOur machine will fix your 72dpi files and print perfectlyYou can't make money with DTG… ink is too high and production is too slowSublimation (per Aaron)Terry: Dipping mugs after pressing. Even in lukewarm water you are creating micro cracks in the ceramic. This was an old band aid for old coating that was not as good as the current dishwasher safe coatings where the ink is not going to ghost as readily. Just remove the transfer, put the mug on a cooling rack, cooling stone, or on concrete to remove the heat from it at a natural level and you will be fine. If anyone is suggesting it, I would be leery of their mugs and the quality of coating.Jay: 400 degrees for 60 seconds - This time and temperature has been used as the correct setting for all sorts of items. It is another bandaid for poor testing and was just a catch all to make sure that the full transfer happened. Most items have a much lower time and temperature. 400 for 60 seconds will cause blacks to look brown, and haloing around the edges of prints. It can even cause the orange peel look on thin aluminum and other hard surface coated items.Embroidery (per Erich)Terry: Embroidery pricing begins and ends with $1 per thousand stitches. Every shop is unique, niches can be different, and both the value you are providing and the costs required to keep your business healthy and profitable vary widely with where you are located and who you are serving as well as the type and amount of equipment you run. Simple counts are easier for quoting, but often leave money on the table. Besides this ‘rule of thumb' hasn't seemed to change for decades,
Terry and guest host, Jay Busselle, will discuss the steps to take in creating your own brand. In today's world, customers don't want to buy from just a screen printer, or sublimator, or an embroiderer. Today's customer wants a relationship with a company that has shared views and values. A lot of smart people have shared a lot of opinions and their definition of a brand. This is mine:Your brand is not your logo.Your brand is not what you do.Your brand is not your product.Your brand is your style.Your brand is your promise to me.Your brand is how you make me feel.Remember SPF! (not sun protection factor) Style - Promise - FeelTerry: What do you mean by style, Jay? Maybe you could explain that a little more?Jay: Let's start with the dictionary definition of the word style: a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.Playful & Lighthearted {or} Serious & SoberEconomical & Affordable {or} Luxury & LavishVintage & Classic {or} Modern & ContemporaryRock n Roll {or} Hip HopCountry {or} ClassicalTruck {or} SedanSUV {or} Mini VanV8 engine {or} ElectricYour vibe, your personality, your character, your identity.I also want to share that in my opinion, it's critical to think about this from both a business and personal perspective. Especially if you're a small business owner! Because if you are a small biz owner then you're in sales and in marketing and in bookkeeping and in production and in janitorial and in … and in… and in… you're in EVERYTHING. This also means your personal style is in EVERYTHING. To be more clear - if your style, your personality, your identity is of a serious, sober, calm and calculated nature, then guess what?

Experiential Marketing Terry: It's all about the experience in marketing. Jay Busselle is here to talk about this method of marketing and how it applies to apparel (and product) decorators. Erich: What exactly is Experiential Marketing? JAY: I think the smart folks at EventBrite defined it best: a strategy or a purposeful plan that engages consumers using branded experiences. Sometimes this is referred to as “live marketing” or “event marketing experience,” the idea is to create a memorable impact on the attendees; one that will inspire them to share with their friends both online and off. Your staff, customers, and prospects want an experience — they want something remarkable, something they relate to, something that makes them feel like less of a checkbook and more of a participant. Terry: Why does this work so well for apparel (and other product) decorators? JAY: Because apparel & product decorators can create purposeful experiences where the attendees are involved, engaged, participating, watching this thing...come to life or being made live, in real time. When and if possible - actually involving the attendees in a hands-on experience... will give them a significantly deeper emotional connection. You can literally impact their senses. They can become co-creators of the swag or branded merch. Erich: Jay, what are some common examples of experiential marketing in our industry? Manual screen printing: 1-2 colors Heat pressing specialty material transfers Sublimating mugs Laser engraving pens Embroidering names or monograms AND of course as you mentioned this is part of the strategy we use at EZ while exhibiting at trade shows. Using a DTG printer to print full color, custom & potentially personalized images Terry: How about some more unique examples? Brett Bowden of Printed Threads Jay & Jeff printing offici...

This is mine:Your brand is not your logo.Your brand is not what you do.Your brand is not your product.Your brand is your style.Your brand is your promise to me.Your brand is how you make me feel.So many business owners in our industry make a mess of this. They already have a business that has invested in machines, people and processes. They need their ROI – they need sales! They are starving for sales. With that pressure they decide on a sale, slap some marketing together, fire off a few emails, create some social media posts and wait for the orders to roll in. That almost never works. And if you did get lucky with a few orders, it's not sustainable!

Aaron: Jimmy Lamb with Sawgrass:In this digital age, it seems like we have forgotten about the power of face-to-face interaction. You really can't judge people, companies and equipment effectively without a personal connection. But it goes further than that. NETWORKING is a huge component of Trade Shows. Nothing beats striking up conversations with others to share ideas and experiences. Don’t be afraid of the numbers, knowledge is power! In this episode, we share the tools and methods to measure how well your community is doing. Episode Highlights: 6 Ways to Track Sales Create an email list Creating an email list helps you measure the movement of the needle. It helps you connect with your community better and grow relationships, but also helps you measure community analytics. You can use your email list to measure analytics and experiment with what gets more clicks, different headline styles, images or no images, open rate and also track if your audience is responsive to your call to action. Email is not dead and is a must for your marketing efforts. Use UTM codes See the link below to Google’s UTM Code builder by Google Analytics. Drop your website URL, a campaign source (your newsletter name) and campaign medium (set to email). You’ll want to include a note or slogan in your medium so you can associate and track where the traffic came from. Another tool is PixelMe, a URL shortener you can use with retargeting campaigns on Facebook and Twitter, building a retargeting audience list in the background of people who have engaged or interacted with those accounts. Set up a funnel Kami has created a tutorial video for setting up a funnel in Google Analytics. See below for a link to the video tutorial. Set up a funnel, establish a goal and monitor outcomes and measure the results of your goals. Create supplemental content and measure download and conversion rates Create supplemental content and measure the success of your sales from that content. People want to work with you and they want to know how they can work with you. Madalyn discusses how she uses freebies and giveaways through Thinkific. Adapt this to what you do, whether your product is a service or something physical. Think about who you’re trying to reach and what you can offer them. It doesn’t have to be a sale, it can be a download, a sign-up, changing behaviors or any actionable that you’re asking your audience to do. Ask and keep track of how people heard about you This may sound old-fashioned, but it works. You can ask on a prospect call or include a question in a web or sign up form. Kami uses this method of information gathering on the Zoetica website contact form. Madalyn discusses how she connected with Jay Busselle and how he found her through the speaker list for Social Media Marketing World, looking for Twitter experts. He followed the Twitter chat and was inspired to start his own chat, Promo Chat which has been successful for over a year. Create coupon codes Creating a special coupon code for your community and using different ones for each touchpoint, especially for events, allows you to track the audience as they relate to the code. Codes can be used with Thinkific for courses, Eventbrite for events and most merchant providers work with codes for sales as well.
