With that, let's bring Erich on so he can join in the discussion!5 eCommerce PitfallsLack of Focus: This can come in the form of not knowing your audience and therefore not being able to target them or not curating your garments so that your customers are doomed with an overmuch of choice; Let's talk about how a lack of focus in any area can cause issues for ecommerce.Failing to Promote: No matter what balance of online to offline sales your company does, not spending active effort and capital to promote your online store will leave it suffering. Whether you use company stores as a tool for order-taking, you are running retail-styled collections, or building a customization business online, people can't use your site if they don't know it's there. Let's talk about promotions.Poor Presentation: When dealing with customers online, you can't rely on your personal charm to pull off the sale; the presentation of the site, the images and copy you use to show and describe the product, and the design of your site can influence the way that your customer feels about your brand. Moreover, it shouldn't stop online- if your customer gets one order in a nice logoed box with a ‘Thank You' message and a topper sheet to prevent dirt / infiltration another with a roughed-up box without as much as a packing slip, which one is going to produce delight and let them know you care about their order? Let's talk about the presentation.Failure to test / poor understanding of the purchasing process: If you haven't purchased something from your own store, that is the first thing you need to do when we finish talking today. Not being able to speak the customer's language or to locate them in the ordering process when they need support makes you either look ignorant or makes your system seem less trustworthy. You need to test; first, because you need to see if you can find areas of friction that reduce the ease of ordering that may need to be addr...

Jarrod Hennis from Rockford Art Deli (RAD) explains why community-based experiences like a Free Print Day matter for screen printing businesses in this exclusive interview at THREADX 2020. “How many businesses have a line out the door for 8 hours?”, Jarrod said. From printing a Christmastime Baby Yoda print for 8,000+ people that waited in line for 2 hours to donating 1% of Rockford Art Deli’s gross sales to 1% For The Planet, Jarrod has spearheaded an amazing mission to use his business to spotlight Rockford, Illinois’ community...and push the screen printing industry forward. Visit Rockford Art Deli on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockfordartdeli/?hl=en Jarrod asked a poignant question about how print shops could impact their community with events: “When you have 800 people coming in the door, and they all bring in one can of food, what’s that do for the local food pantry?” That’s why he’s been highlighting local nonprofits in Rockford at the most recent Live Print Days. How do the Live Print Days actually work? Jarrod explained that customers wait outside the shop, then check in the garments they bring. The shop only offers a single-color black print. “They come in, check-in their shirt, then they can watch us print it or watch it come out of the dryer. It’s fast-paced.” The RAD team doesn’t let people print their own shirts. It’s too fast-paced: “It’s 400 shirts an hour.” On a manual screen printing press! Check out the PrintHustlers Blog: https://www.printavo.com/blog But Jarrod isn’t just thinking about fun designs to print for Rockford’s local population. He’s thinking about the global impact that screen printing has: “A lot of companies are greenwashing it,” he said candidly. “The garment industry is the second most polluting in the world after the oil industry,” Jarrod explained. By partnering with Allmade to ensure a sustainable product made ethically, Rockford Art Deli expands the conversation about the impact a seemingly small business can have. This interview took place at SGIA’s THREADX 2020 in Scottsdale, AZ during February 2020. We were fortunate enough to bring ART BY MATOS and CEDAR CITY PRINTS to the show, and can’t wait for future SGIA events.

Brett Bowden from Printed Threads saved his screen printing business. How? By focusing on putting the right people in the right seats. "I started Printed Threads when I was 28 years old and didn’t really know the basics of running a business," Brett told us. In the latest PrintHustlers Podcast, Brett recounts how hiring a VP of Operations revitalized Printed Threads. Read the full story: https://www.printavo.com/blog/how-brett-saved-printed-threads Brett's advice for screen print shops? "Stop being the firefighter and start being the visionary." By leading his team, delegating, and truly developing the vision and values of Printed Threads, Brett built a strong foundation for his team. "Without that foundation, you have nothing to grow on," Brett added. Brett visited a prominent nationwide fast-food chain recently for a sandwich and immediately noticed something wrong. "I go in there, order my sub, and I'm like...man, these people hate working here." The last thing anyone wants to do is spend every day at a bad job they hate. That's a recipe for misery. But as we've often noted, screen printing isn't seen as a desirable career. So how can screen print shops be a great place to work? Build a great team. Read more about Printed Threads and Brett’s journey: https://www.printavo.com/blog/how-brett-saved-printed-threads Brett’s tips for creating an amazing screen print shop: Empathize "Being a business owner that can relate and empathize to everyone else who works here helps. Hey, I know what it’s like to clean screens all day. I know what it’s like to print all day. I can help you. Having that empathy is crucial." Celebrate your wins together "I want to work and grind but when we’re done I want to celebrate together. I think what a lot of companies miss is they don’t struggle and then celebrate together. If you do everything together it creates camaraderie." Create a company your employees are a fan of "If they're a fan of the company, they won't just let it sink. They don't want to go work at Firehouse Subs or whatever." Make a mission "You should take a Saturday with key employees and be like: what are we doing? What is special about what we’re doing? Why do you want to work here? Ask the hard questions. Then write down the vision." Get a business coach "There are a lot of entrepreneur organizations. You might pay a few hundred dollars a month to join, but you’re getting in with a good group." Note: check out SGIA if you're looking for industry-specific help. Practice affirmation "I need someone here to give high fives. I need the positive vibes. I’m actually really bad at affirmation. I really struggle with. It’s part of my personality. I don’t say good job, or hey man, here’s the high five. But Seth (Printed Threads' longtime employee and marketing/content mastermind) is really good at that." How do you suggest companies get the information they need to educate their customers, vendors and other stakeholders so they can be more sustainable? Are you seeing an increase in people looking for eco-friendly and sustainable customized apparel? Is one age group more apt to purchase sustainable apparel than another?   So what have you found to be the biggest benefit to the bottom line for your company? Do we do enough to stand up for ourselves and others when the situation requires that? The intention is not to bash men or to have a bitch session. It is to throw a spotlight on the issues women face and discuss how we can effect change where change is needed. 2018 has been wrapped up and we hope it was a solid growth year for everyone. As the new year begins, it's great to list out your goals for 2019. We create a list of 8 potential ideas you can use to craft your own list. 1. Raise Prices. As business owners, we undervalue what we offer. It's natural to think that someone won't pay our asking price so we undercut. As printers, we do this to get more business out of the gate. It's dangerous to the industry as a whole and doesn't accurately reflect the value provided. Instead of a race to the bottom, let's race to the top. Shoot to increase your prices by 10-15%. If you provide enough value, you'll be surprised what people are willing to pay for your services. 2. Delegate. You started the business, but it's to be on top of the business. Focus on extracting yourself out of the business. If you take a week off, your training, systems, and processes should continue to work as if you were there. If they don't, it's time to dive back in and create better, repeatable systems. 3. Pay Yourself. To create a sustainable business, you need to take a fair salary. Shops of all sizes skip payroll to make ends meet especially during slow periods. This isn't a sustainable business. Get to a point where this doesn't have to happen. Read Profit First: (https://profitfirstbook.com/) by Mike Michalowicz to help you execute a plan do this. 4. Fire Non-Performers. If you have an employee that doesn't follow protocol, is absent or just a poor cultural fit, it's time to move on. Clean out the employees holding your company back and create a superstar team. Stop giving excuses. I guarantee you'll wish you did it sooner. 5. Operations Manager. Day to day operations is where many shop owners get swamped. Hiring an operations manager to take this off your plate will greatly help you to delegate. Imagine a day where the tasks you set to complete actually get done in an 8hr period. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? You may have to wait until you can reach $2-3M in revenue, profitably, and that's okay. Keep an eye out for a great fit early. This will be someone you can rely on when you're not at the shop. 6. Visit Your Customers. Take an hour every month to visit a customer of yours. Show up at their office with a small gift and ask them to show you around. They'll be unbelievably thankful you spent time with them and you build a great rapport. Remember, each shirt, trophy, sign, and hat has a story behind it. Tapping into that story will help build a deeper relationship and increase sales. 7. Go to a Tradeshow. There are incredible tradeshows in our industry including ISS, NBM, SGIA, and DAX. Be sure to take the time to visit one. The network gained, relationships built and knowledge learned will be worth the time & money. Make this an annual event and bring your star players from the shop. 8. New Sales Channel. The world of marketing is changing. You're able to tap into customers worldwide in 15min and measure conversion rates. Setup your website funnel to handle inbound leads. It should look something like: Website/Audience Specific Landing Page Submit Contact Form Sales Rep Phone Call Drive sales through this funnel using AdRoll (retargeting), LinkedIn messaging, shop open-houses, community events, small business committees, and Facebook ads. Pick one and grow it! Best of luck in 2019 and let's all grow together!

SGIA Creates First-ever Convergence Council - New council taps supplier executives from all printing industry segments to advise association — In an unprecedented move, the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) has created a Suppliers and Manufacturers Council (SMC), an elite group of industry leaders who will advise the association on issues and concerns related to the future success of their companies, their customers and, more importantly, the printing industry. Planning for 2019 Terry: New mindset for a changing marketplace, the time is at hand If you're turning away “below minimum” orders right now, and you likely are, it's only going to get worse. ‘We're not set up for that kind of business.” "The garment-decorating marketplace has seen a significant shift toward three things: individualization, customization for quantities as small as one, and the prevailing customer mindset of: "I want it right now." Get started with minimal investment… now Aaron: Do you Have a Business Plan? Everyone talks about it, everyone says it is a good idea if not essential, but in my research (ie asking people if they have one) it is less than 20% and my guess half of that 20 % is lying. It is really hard to do, you have to honestly assess yourself and your business? But is your business not important enough for you to spend time ON it? If you do have one, was it just to get a loan or place on a coffee table? Has anyone in your company read it or better yet, been a part of it. Can you tell me your “why” in less than 3 sentences? I offered up a free bit of help in getting your business plan off the ground this last summer. It was only 5 steps and you had to send me 5 emails to participate in it. Videos were watched by over 1,000 people. Guess how many people did the first one (5). Guess how many people got through all 5 steps? (1) http://aaronmontgomery.info/businessplan This is not to make you feel bad or for me to whine that no one participated. It just showed me I need to do a better job of preaching the business plan sermon and to show you that you are not alone. Lets do it together!!! IT WILL HELP YOUR BUSINESS. Terry: Micromanagement self-evaluation At the start of a new year, it's a good time to look at your own manager/owner style on the job Micromanagers never seem to know they're micromanagers, in fact sometimes tell you they are not. But remember as an employee, it's called the eccentricities of ownership,

Lots of consternation over giveaways and people using fake emails to vote.“We just provide the forum to recognize people. It apparently means a lot to them and we had no rules in place otherwise. The coral hue features gold undertones that the institute says “energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” Seeking inspiration for this year's color, the organization says Living Coral is in reaction to the prominence of digital technology and social media in daily life and the desire for authentic experiences. The institute also states that the shade symbolizes an “innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits” and the “desire for playful expression.” “Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” states Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Color Institute. “With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial [color] hit a responsive chord.” Embroidery Technology Advancements Terry: Give us a little history of ZSK and why they have positioned themselves to get involved with all this innovation? News Graphics One, Insta, OKI Gala at SGIA - Aaron had an opportunity to attend this event where they all shared the alliance and roadmaps for the future. For example, at SGIA OKI Data announced the Pro 9541WT. This is a 5 Station (CMYK + White) toner transfer system that is 13 x 19 in size. All these partners together made a very strong presence with Graphics One providing the distribution of all of the parts, a great heat press in the Insta Product and event a new software piece in Cadlink joining the group to provide a RIP for the OKI systems. Graphics One | CADLink | INSTA Graphics System | OKI DATA Graphics of Americas Now Under SGIA Ownership - The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) has purchased the printing trade show Graphics of the Americas (GOA) from the Florida Graphics Alliance (FGA) (formerly the Printing Association of Florida). Following a transition period, GOA will relaunch in February 2020 in Miami Beach, Florida. SGIA acquired the show in August 2018. “GOA has a long history of bringing together an audience of exhibitors and attendees from North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. These markets, though distinctly different in many aspects, are vital players in the larger printing community, and are of critical interest to the supplier members of SGIA,” said Ford Bowers, President & CEO, SGIA. Over the next 18 months, SGIA and FGA will transition GOA to its new ownership and redefine it as an integral part of the calendar of events in the printing industry with high value for attendees and exhibitors. What Happened at SGIA by Ted Stahl - We also had an opportunity to be invited guests at a press conference being held by Group Stahls. We will be hosting Josh or Zack Ellsworth on the show early in 2019 for more details on their exciting announcements. Here is a word from Ted Stahl on his blog:“Heat printing was a common theme and the show was a harbinger of things to come in the apparel industry. For example, I noticed more Direct to Garment Printers than we've ever seen before. It was also well attended by international apparel decorators, as well as larger domestic customers looking for ways to keep up with requests for on-demand garment decoration. People need alternatives to situations where screen printing or embroidery won't work, such as on lightweight performance fabrics. They want easier ways to create special effects such as foil and reflective logos.” 2018 - 6th Annual REGGIE Awards. We love these awards as it allows us to provide a form for worthy folks in our industry to be recognized and everything is done completely by you the listeners. There is no panel of judges, we don't select our favorites, it is all by you. Aaron and Terry are at the SGIA Expo in Las Vegas, NV and to add some fun technical challenges they are bringing in two awesome guests from Blumenau Brazil. Carolyn Cagle is a long time embroider who has developed a friendship with her digitizer, Vitor of Vitordigitizing. Carolyn recently decided to take a bit of a working vacation to visit Vitor and see how things work in Brazil. We are fortunate enough to get her and Vitor on the show to talk about digitizing, relationships and how to open up your world by working with foreign digitizers. Not only do we get a ton of great information, but as always the 2 Regular Guys find a way to have a lot of fun along the way. Sponsored by: SGIA.org Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. We are not doing this for our employers, but rather for our industry. Since February 2013, The 2 Regular Guys have been the first and the most listened to garment decorating industry podcast on this planet! We are humbled by all of you tuning in each week. We work hard to bring you information that will make your business better, and our industry better. Take a look at our incredible weekly guest list and you'll understand where this industry goes for news, interviews and the heartbeat of garment decorating. Thanks for listening! Working with Foreign Digitizers Terry: So, Carolyn - how is it that an embroiderer from Minnesota decides to fly down to Brazil? What are you doing there now, and how did this all start?Aaron: You have a lot of experience in machine embroidery, both in commercial production and in creating your own fashion pieces- what has been the greatest difference you've noticed in the way Vitor's shop in Brazil runs compared to how you usually work? Are the processes and materials the same, or are there differences?Terry: Anyone who listens to the show knows how much I think everyone should always be looking for niche markets; what are the primary markets you sell into, Vitor? What kinds of unique niche markets or products make your shop different?Aaron: Pricing models are a constant discussion even within the US; embroiderers seem to have many idiosyncratic methods for quoting jobs; what kind of pricing methods are common in Brazil? What's different about quoting and how do people tend to take payment for jobs, Carolyn?Terry: Carolyn- Why did you choose to work with Vitor as a digitizer? People often discuss the problems they have had with quality or meeting expectations when working with digitizers outside of the US, what makes working with Vitor different? (Vitor, how did you start looking for business outside of Brazil?)Aaron: What will you take away from this experience visiting Brazil? What's the most important thing you learned inside the shop and what is something you learned, when you weren't in production? Vitor, what have you learned from having Carolyn there?Terry: Thanks again for coming on the show, Carolyn and Vitor! Do you have anything you'd like to share or mention before we let you go? Where can we find more about your trip and work?Carolyn Cagle spent 15 years in the graphic and print industry before going to work for the family decoration business which is 46 years in operation doing embroidery and screen printing where she learned the ropes from her mother and brother; She started a custom mitten business in 2004 and continues that work as well as working on custom small run embroidery and custom pieces in her home studio. Vitor has been in the industry since 1994, starting at the age of 14 running multi-head embroidery. In 2001, he started a small embroidery shop with a friend and began digitizing, working long hours on his own to teach himself. In 2003 he found his first client outside of Brazil and continues to digitize for clients all over the world. Vitor now has 3 single-head machines running sam...
