In this episode, I sit down with Jillian Rigert to explore her journey of self-discovery and authenticity. We dive into the pressures that often lead us away from our true passions and discuss the importance of giving ourselves permission to pivot when something no longer aligns. We also touch on the challenges of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and the fear of failure that many high achievers face. The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang
Words of wisdom from a professional pivoter. In today's episode, we delve into the transformative power of pivoting in both life and career. Dr. Jillian shares strategies for embracing change, giving yourself permission, and learning to put your opinion above the opinion of others. Trigger warning: Blunt mentions of suicide and eating disorders occur in this episode. Giving yourself permission to pivot is hard. Societal pressures often lead us astray from what truly matters. We spend a lot of time in our lives worrying about crap that doesn't actually matter. Ask yourself these questions: Are my current actions aligned with my current goals and aspirations? Am I open to embracing change, or do I tend to resist it? What pivotal moments have I experienced in my own life or career and what would I do differently? Career paths are rarely linear, and sometimes it's necessary to pivot to pursue new passions or align with our changing priorities. In medicine, we are told that pivoting is equal to failure. What if it is actually success? We hope you enjoy this special guest episode. Dr Jillian Rigert has doctorate degrees in dentistry and medicine with a specialty in oral medicine. She is an Air Force veteran, a postdoctoral research fellow in Radiation Oncology, and Certified Life and Professional Leadership Coach. Through coaching and her YouTube channel (‘A Life True to You'), Jillian's mission is to help people discover or rediscover what it means to create a life true to themselves - free from societal pressures that lead them astray. Outside of work, she loves to spend time with her dog, Reese, and is an avid runner. Jillian started her career by fast tracking into a dental school and dedicating herself to becoming an Air Force oral and maxillofacial surgeon. A “leader” to her at that time meant chasing high achievements, doing the hardest job we could possibly do, pushing ourselves to the limits mentally and physically, being confident and taking on formal leadership titles including her roles as an Air Force officer and surgeon trainee. In 2014-2017, her perspective started to unravel. Sleep deprivation, self-doubt, under-nourishment and exhaustion from constantly pushing herself to the limits led to serious illness which nearly cost her life. Her experience helped her to see how societal values often lead us astray from what truly matters in life and altered her perspective on what it means to be a leader. Now, being a leader to Jillian includes living with integrity, in alignment with your core values, advocating for what we believe is right, and creating a psychologically safe environment for others to do the same. A leader lives it to give it - in other words “walks the talk.” Jillian believes that learning how to be leaders of our own lives is a great and important first step in learning how to be a leader for others in a way that's authentic and sustainable. In this episode, Jillian and I chatted about:Her leadership roles Her leadership style Her leadership journey The leaders that helped her rise The challenges she faced on her journey How she navigated those challenges How she thinks you can become a strong and kind leader Her ‘take home' leadership messages for the listeners, and What she is currently excited to be working on.Jillian can be found and/or contacted via the following online platform addresses: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JillianRigertDMDMDLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillian-rigert/Website: https://jillianrigertcoaching.com/Please reach out to Dr Harrison for individual coaching and/or organisational training via dr.adam@coachingmentoringdoctors.com.His web address and social media profile links / handles include:www.dradamharrison.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dradamharrison/www.youtube.com/c/DrAdamPhysicianCoachhttps://www.facebook.com/coachingmentoringdoctors/https://www.instagram.com/dradamharrison/He has co-written a new online course entitled ‘How to be Assertive, Maintain Boundaries, and Say “No!”‘ which can be accessed instantly here for only £55/$70:

The world can be so chaotic sometimes. Different things will motivate you to decide on relationships, education, and career. However, we can never eliminate the hardships and pressures it produces within our minds. Thus, for mentally tough people, life can be more traumatic and challenging to handle or even to survive. Many incredible individuals, such as athletes, military, and veterans, are likely to experience depression that could sometimes lead to significant problems in mental, emotional, and physical health. Moreover, it has been stated that the core of mental toughness is self-compassion and that mentally tough individuals need to possess it. We often overlook our personal needs in our quest for success and belongingness. And it makes us more vulnerable and weaker, not having enough strength to fight more battles. Hence, we must free ourselves from societal expectations and start reclaiming ourselves from the destructive influence of imposter syndrome and the negative voices which destroy our confidence. We must also be willing to face the grief, guilt, and shame from our pasts and learn to process everything with the help of others who are willing to stretch out their hands for our good. As our guest speaker encourages us, "Choose life, you have one. Choose self-compassion; you deserve it." Dr. Jillian Rigert is an Oral Medicine Specialist, Head and Neck Cancer Researcher, YouTuber, Mental Health and Quality of Life Advocate, Air Force Veteran, and Certified Professional Leadership Coach. Jillian had experienced depression during a time when a career was a marker of success by societal standards. After years of navigating a life-threatening level of burnout, career transitions, identity loss, and deep diving into personal healing- life and leadership coaching completely transformed Jillian's life's trajectory. Now, she "lives to give it" and pays forward the fantastic benefits of coaching. Today, she specializes in partnering with clients as they work to reconnect with their essential selves, often during times of burnout and transitions in career and life. She supports individuals in exploring their authentic goals, establishing boundaries, and navigating the best next steps in their journeys. In this special episode with Dr. Jillian Rigert, we'll learn about the journey of a woman who battled with the negative thoughts within her mind and felt the loneliness of unbelonging. She seeks to raise mental health awareness, particularly on burnout, mind-body healing, and an eating disorder. Tune in as she shares her bravery, struggles, grief, and self-compassion story. Key Takeaways: "We know people a lot from their face, and it impacts people to have more oral health and their self-esteem and their desire to go to levels and interview." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "I joined the Air Force and started my oral surgery residency. I picked my head up and thought I was not sure this was the right fit for me. The things I was experiencing at the time were during periods of long hours without sleep, and so I was becoming suicidal." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "So, I was just thinking, everyone looked fine around me, but why am I the only one that cannot hold up to what we need to do to be successful in surgery?" – Dr. Jillian Rigert "I got clouded by my lack of confidence, and I thought I didn't deserve to be in oral surgery." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "The core of mental toughness is self-compassion. People that are very mentally tough need to have self-compassion." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "Being remote helped me to realize that a chaotic setting isn't the best fit for me. With being so sensitive, maybe I need something slower." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "Without hope for my fight, it's easy to give up. So, to have a boundary, I didn't want to work with patients with eating disorders, but I resonated with this similar experience with people with cancer enough that I could learn how to hold space for them." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "No steps are wasted, whether they're failure, success, ups, downs, happiness, sadness, it all comes together to make us a unique individual." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "We go through things each day, and we feel so isolated because when the pressure is on you, it seems like you're alone many times." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Self-compassion is not fluffy. It's not something that should be overlooked and seen as a soft skill. It's necessary." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "We should never make everything big at one time. It's always turtle steps so you can have a vision of what you want and make sure that your vision is in alignment with your core values." – Dr. Jillian Rigert "Make small turtle steps way forward so that you can always allow yourself permission to pivot as needed." – Dr. Jillian Rigert Connect with Dr. Jillian Rigert: Website: https://www.jillianrigertcoaching.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/permissiontopivotcommunity Twitter: https://twitter.com/jillian_rigert LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillian-rigert/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jillian_dmd_md_and_reese_dog/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/JillianRigertDMDMD Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. "To reduce eating disorder risks and to support those who may be suffering in silence, we need to keep talking and promote awareness of the issues while clarifying long-held misconceptions about eating disorders. We can't help those who do not feel able to speak up. We can't help people that speak up and can't access treatment. We can't help when we constantly contribute to the problem through the cultures we create and perpetuate. With awareness of these concerns, we must use our voices to improve the culture of medicine and the military, including combating harmful messages around weight that instill shame and avoidance while lacking evidence-based rigor to back up their claims. We must reduce mental health stigmatization and the shame associated with asking for help. We must create psychological safety to talk about the hard things and end anyone's suffering in silence." Jillian Rigert is an oral medicine specialist and radiation oncology research fellow. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Military and medicine: 10 shared risk factors for eating disorder development." Did you enjoy today's episode? "I have spent years in silence about my career decisions, nervous that my inability to take call and inability to thrive while sleep-deprived could be seen as weaknesses. Being afraid to admit I was advocating for my mental health and my life. That's a problem. I am experiencing fear for advocating for the health and safety of myself and others for concern that I may sound weak. That's a big problem. Silence is not the answer. Avoiding talking about it is not the answer. I cannot avoid call hard enough for prolonged sleep deprivation to be less of a problem for others. So let's keep talking. Physicians need sleep. The system needs to change. Many are not OK. I was one of them. We need to normalize talking about the hard things and creating environments that promote psychological safety and the ability to truly ask for help, not censor our struggles in mental health appointments to save face. And if you need to hear it: It's OK to crave basic needs and advocate for them. You're a human, not a robot; we need to create a system made for humans, not robots. If you are having dark thoughts, please seek help. While the best time may have been days or months ago, the next best time is now." This interview felt more like two friends and medical professionals sitting down to coffee than a podcast interview. We talked about our Wayfinder coaching program we're in, we chatted about our burnout stories (and Jillian turned the mic back on me to ask what my own pivots looked like) and we demonstrated a coaching tool on Jillian's thought that she didn't have enough money to sign up for a coaching program. If you're not on the path you want to be on, but lost the map and aren't sure what to do next, schedule a free mini coaching session to see if we're a good fit and to get a taste of coaching! Visit www.coachhopecook.com for more info on other packages! Take-home points from the interview: Burnout signs may include apathy, not caring as much about doing a good job or disordered eating, physical complaints like not sleeping or headaches or anxiety. Grinding through/showing grit is a societal expectation. Burnout is your Essential Self begging you to rest and recover In order to take time off, you'll come up against a lot of beliefs and thoughts about not being able to afford to take the time off. It's important to dissect these beliefs and see what's true and what's a thought error. Byron Katie has a method called "The Work" that helps you question your thoughts. Identify your support systems at work and home. Is your job a "people first" type job, or is it all about churning out productivity? Use therapists or coaches to help you see other options because when you're in the midst of burnout, your brain can't come up with any viable options to get you over the hump. When to consider therapy: If you've had trauma or grief and haven't addressed it. Consider coaching if you're functioning but want to function better- we'll teach you the tools for forward momentum Learning how to feel things in your body is huge because it allows you to identify which thoughts are helpful and which thoughts are causing pain Often our stories about ourselves aren't embedded in reality. We feel shame based on false beliefs. Like, "I'll be fired/perceived as weak" if I admit I'm burned out. Kevin MD article: Recovering from Burnout, a permission to pivot Books mentioned: The Way of Integrity and Finding your Own North Star (both by Martha Beck) Byron Katie "The Work" (these are the questions we refer to in the session) Dr. Jillian Rigert's website First episode with Dr. Jillian Rigert
"I was diagnosed over 20 years ago, and looking back, I feel privileged that I did meet the stereotype for anorexia and be forced into treatment. However, along the way, I have gained insight that people of all bodies share my struggles. And the use of weight/BMI to determine whether someone is struggling and should have access to treatment results in delayed diagnoses, limitations in access to care, prolonged suffering, invalidation, and shame." Jillian Rigert is an oral medicine specialist and radiation oncology research fellow. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Eating disorders thrive in secrecy, so let's talk about it. Starting with BMI." Did you enjoy today's episode? Eating Disorders Thrive in Secrecy, so Let's Talk About It! If you are struggling with an eating disorder or believe you may be, Go to the National Eating Disorders Association (https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.o...) for their Free online chat, call their Help Line at 1-800-931-2237 or contact their Crisis Line by Texting "NEDA" to 741741. Dr. Karla talks with Dr. Jillian Rigert (DMD and MD) about what teens, parents, doctors, and teachers can do to help teens recognize, get treatment and heal from eating disorders, starting with self-worth and self-compassion. You get to live your magical and FUN life! Dr. Rigert wrote an incredibly helpful blog for IME Community, titled, "Lessons from a recovering perfectionist". I found Dr. Rigert's blog and my interview with her to be so helpful and healing. We're talking about Eating Disorders in this video, so just know that if you are not feeling it, go ahead and stop listening. Also, the video is super helpful and healing, but doesn't take the place of going to your doctor and working with a therapist who specializes in eating disorder treatment. The earlier you are diagnosed and receive treatment, the better your outcome. First, if you are experiencing disordered eating, know that you are not alone, that it's never your fault, you are worthy of help and treatment and healing no matter where you are with your diagnosis. Recognize, you are not broken and you can heal and live your beautiful life. You don't cause and you don't control all the things in life. Eating disorders are a mental health diagnosis. They are a medical condition. You are not a diagnosis. I simply love you and want you to know that you are deserving of a self-love superpower life. Eating disorders are unfortunately common, cross gender lines, and do not have anything to do with weight. What do I mean by that? You cannot determine if someone has an eating disorder based on their weight and external appearance. In our society and culture, we feel entitled to comment on bodies and sizeism is a thing and so is weight bullying, weight stigma and bias, and the false association between weight and health. It's all 100% harmful. Dr. Jillian and I talk a lot about social media in this helpful discussion. It's very very helpful. Welcome to National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. I mean, I guess it's a good thing to have an awareness week? What do you think? I spent some time figuring out how to be helpful and not just share the typical talking points that are out there on eating disorders. How IME Community is addressing eating disorders starts with sharing the story of Dr. Jillian Rigert and her experience with an eating disorder, but most importantly, how Dr. Jillian is intentionally healing through her journey of self-worth and self-compassion. Sound familiar? It's self-love superpower! Eating disorders are "suffering", a word Dr. Jillian used many times in this discussion. Parents, note that your teen's weight has absolutely nothing to do with their internal mental state. If you believe your teen's thinness means they should be happy, you're wrong. If you believe your teen who exists in a larger body, needs to shrink their body and their emotional and mental health and well-being will be fixed, wrong. I'm not saying that improving health habits won't improve well-being. Our focus on weight being equated to health and emotional health is just wrong. Stop believing the pursuit of thin privilege gets to happiness. Silence is fuel for an eating disorder. Not talking about it, not knowing how to talk about it, staying stuck in diet culture, focusing too much on weight and not on mental health are all ways that parents and doctors contribute to the perpetuation of eating disorders and potentially create continued harm. Just like many issues in healthcare, eating disorder screening and treatment is another thing we've not been that helpful in addressing. Dr. Jillian and I talk about how we can start by having discussions with physicians and get rid of the focus on BMI (Body Mass Index) and weight-based diagnostic criteria. When she talks about how harmful BMI at the doctor's office was for her, I was overcome with emotion. Her story is very powerful. Here's a link to one of the many helpful Dr. Jillian Rigert articles on eating disorders, published in KevinMD.com. https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2022/01/... Next up, I will discuss the different types of eating disorders. Parents, please let me know what needs you have for coaching on this important health issue. Reach out to me at drkarlaactivistmd@imecommunity.com. Teens, 12 to 18, and parents of teens, go to imecommunity.com and Join IME Community to get my coaching to create a Body Positive Community for Teens in a Body Negative World! Dr. Jillian Rigert had it all, or so it seemed. She'd completed dental school, started medical school for oral surgery, and she was a captain in the airforce. But underneath the surface, she struggled with anorexia, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Dr. Rigert's courageous journey will have you asking yourself how societal pressures have played a role in your own life and whether or not you're in alignment with your essential self. She tells us how she let go of her identity as an oral surgery resident and airforce captain and started finally making choices that felt right deep inside. Societal pressure can trap us into being terrified to pivot. . Pay attention to those feelings of something not being a good fit Be careful of Arrival Fallacy--keeping your head down and thinking one day you'll be happy when x, y, or z happens. Notice if your mind is telling you there are only two options, A or B, especially if neither one is healthy or good for you. This is your mind making stuff up and tricking you into thinking the situation is hopeless When you're so afraid of being a disappointment to people that you'd take your own life, or suffer in some other way, this is a red flag to get help. We put an insane value on professions and degrees, even when they trump our health and mental well-being. These jobs and titles are part of our identity and we won't let go of these even if our health and lives are at stake Sit with decisions all on your own. If no one ever knew what you decided, if you weren't doing it for validation, what does your heart tell you to do? Jillian's website: https://www.jillianrigertcoaching.com/ has excellent blog posts talking more about her journey, the arrival fallacy, listening to your essential self, and many others.
