You don't have to be crying in your car to be in burnout. You don't have to be curled up in bed or hospitalized for it to “count.”Burnout doesn't always scream—it whispers. Through micromanaging, resentment, or crashing after a normal day. This episode is your early warning system. We're calling out the quiet burnout signs most high-achievers ignore—and why “I'm fine” is often a lie we use to avoid the truth. If you're constantly pushing through but feel like something's off… this is your gut check. What You'll Learn:⚠️ The sneaky ways burnout shows up before the breakdown
Tired of being told that the only way to fix your cortisol is to buy someone's overpriced “happy juice” or miracle supplement?Same. In this episode, I'm breaking down the real, science-backed strategies to lower cortisol—most of which are free, simple, and actually work.As a former scientist turned burnout coach, I'm not here for the pseudoscience. I'm here for facts, function, and helping high-achievers actually regulate their stress hormones in a sustainable way. What You'll Learn:
What if the reason you're stuck isn't your strategy... it's your subconscious? In this episode, I'm talking to Jen — clinical hypnotherapist, mindset coach, and total powerhouse — about how to actually reprogram the beliefs that are keeping you stuck in burnout, perfectionism, and hustle mode.Inside, we talk about:Why mindset work isn't just "think positive thoughts" BSHow perfectionism and procrastination are warning signs of hidden blocksWhat clinical hypnosis actually is (and isn't) — and how it changes your resultsHow to make mindset work sustainable without spending hours journaling every dayPlus: You'll hear Jen live-coach me through some of my own subconscious resistance...
You set the boundary… and then you break it.Yeah, same.In this episode, we're talking about how to set boundaries that actually stick—especially when you're the one in charge. Because burnout doesn't just come from bad clients or over-demanding teams. A lot of the time? It comes from you ignoring your own rules.Inside this episode, I'm breaking down:
This one's for the woman who's so damn done—but doesn't want to quit. You're not trying to burn it all down. You're just tired of duct-taping your business together every week and calling it “fine.” You built this thing for freedom, for impact—not to feel like everything collapses the second you step away.In this episode, I walk you through my go-to Burnout-Proof Reset Method—a strategic (and still totally doable) way to press pause without disappearing, ghosting clients, or throwing your entire offer suite in the trash.Inside this episode:
If your calendar feels like a landmine and you're ending most days wondering what the hell just happened—this episode is for you.I'm sharing my no-fluff framework for planning a day (and week) that actually works for your energy—not some productivity guru's ideal schedule.Inside this episode:
If your business breaks the moment you unplug… you haven't built a business. You've built a burnout trap.In this episode, Ellyn is getting real about what burnout taught her—not just about self-care or saying no, but about what it actually takes to build a business that holds up under pressure. A business that supports your ambition without draining your energy. She's pulling back the curtain on:The real reason high-achievers burn out (spoiler: it's not overworking)What unsustainable success actually looks likeThe systems + strategy shifts that changed everythingWhy “you just need a VA” is a lieThe #1 lesson burnout will teach you—if you're paying attentionIf you're a solopreneur doing the most and feeling the strain, this episode is your wake-up call and your blueprint.
We all know what it's like to hit that mid-afternoon crash, to push through exhaustion, and to feel like we should be able to just “grind it out.” But here's the thing—overwork isn't always the problem. Poor energy management is.And trust me, I say this as someone who has not always been great at this. I don't have some perfectly structured Pomodoro schedule, and I don't take breaks every 90 minutes like clockwork. In fact, I think I have ADHD because I either struggle to focus or hyperfixate so hard that I lose track of time completely. So in this episode, I'm breaking down exactly how I manage my energy in a way that actually works for me, including:
Look, I get it. The idea of “taking a break” to recover from burnout sounds great—until you remember you've got a business to run, a team to manage, or a career that won't just pause because you're exhausted. But here's the truth: You don't have to hit the brakes completely to recover from burnout—you just have to be smarter about how you operate. In this episode, we're talking about:
Think burnout just drains your energy? Think again. It's draining your wallet, too.
In today's episode, Ellyn Schinke dives deep into why the same-old productivity hacks (time blocking, Pomodoro, morning routines, etc.) just don't cut it for relentless high achievers. Instead of preaching “do less” or “slow down,” she debunks three common productivity myths and offers a fresh, burnout-proof framework built for those who demand more from themselves.Key Topics Covered: Myth #1 – The Time Management Myth:Discover why it's not about having less time but rather a capacity problem—and how trying to squeeze more in only limits your space to execute. Myth #2 – The Motivation & Willpower Myth:Learn why high achievers aren't lazy; it's the broken systems that need fixing, not your discipline. Myth #3 – The “Do Less and Slow Down” Myth:Understand why traditional work-life balance advice doesn't resonate for those with big ambitions and how to work in high-efficiency bursts instead.Takeaways & Action Steps: Stop trying to “squeeze more in” and instead focus on creating space for execution. Systematize and delegate to free up capacity—your brain is already doing the heavy lifting. Reframe productivity: it's not about working less; it's about working smarter with systems that actually support your relentless drive.Call to Action:What's the worst productivity advice you've ever received? Are your systems secretly burning you out?

Welcome to Episode 151 of the Burnout-Proof Podcast—our first episode of 2025!
Yes - I had reverb on my mic in this episode! I'm sorry! I've turned it off and it won't be turned on again... As we close out 2024, let's take a moment to reflect on the lessons this year has brought us. In this final episode of the year, I'm sharing three powerful lessons I learned about burnout, growth, and being a high achiever. From recalibrating routines to realizing the importance of systems, this episode is a loving (and honest) kick in the butt to help you start 2025 with intention and clarity. If you've ever felt torn between freedom and structure, struggled to implement the strategies you've invested in, or wondered why you can't seem to “settle,” this episode is for you. Grab a coffee, take a deep breath, and let's dive in. What You'll Learn in This Episode: New Level, New Devil: Why freedom and discipline aren't enemies but partners—and how I found a sustainable balance after rebelling against routines earlier this year. Shiny Objects vs. Systems: The hard truth about why growth starts with foundations, not quick fixes, and how skipping this step held me back in 2024. High Achievers Aren't Meant to Settle: Embracing constant evolution as a strength rather than seeing it as a flaw—and why new challenges are opportunities, not problems. Key Takeaways: Recalibrating after burnout is normal—sometimes you need to rebel against routines to find a structure that feels good again. Investing in growth only works if you have the capacity and systems to implement what you learn. High achievers thrive on growth and evolution. Stop chasing “settled” and embrace the process instead. Reflection Questions: Where have you been rebelling against structure, and what would a happy medium look like for you? Are your systems strong enough to support the growth you're chasing in 2025? How can you embrace your constant evolution instead of fighting it? Common Signs of Pressure-Driven Hustle: Constant feelings of being behind, fear-based motivation, endless to-do lists, and a focus on “shoulds” instead of what truly lights you up. Shifting to Purpose-Driven Hustle: By revisiting your ‘why,' setting intentional boundaries, identifying tasks that feel expansive, and checking in weekly, you can transform how you work. How Systems Support Purpose: Burnout-proof systems streamline your work, help you stay focused on high-impact tasks, and free you from busywork—keeping your hustle aligned with what matters most. In this episode, I sit down with Jillian Rigert to explore her journey of self-discovery and authenticity. We dive into the pressures that often lead us away from our true passions and discuss the importance of giving ourselves permission to pivot when something no longer aligns. We also touch on the challenges of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and the fear of failure that many high achievers face. Jillian shares her experiences with identity shifts and how embracing her true self led to greater fulfillment and genuine connections. For full show notes, head to coachellyn.com/podcast, and, of course, follow me on Instagram OR check out my YouTube Channel for more! Key Words authenticity, societal pressures, permission to pivot, self-discovery, values, passions, people-pleasing, perfectionism, fear of failure, high achievers, guilt, shame, belonging, authenticity, career pivots, societal expectations, values, identity shifts, self-awareness, self-trust, control, decision-making, military, eating disorder, genuine connections Key Takeaways: Give yourself permission to pivot and pursue what aligns with your authentic self. Societal pressures and expectations can lead us astray from our true passions and values. High achievers often struggle with people-pleasing, perfectionism, and the fear of failure. Embracing authenticity and letting go of guilt and shame is essential for personal growth. Finding a sense of belonging comes from being true to oneself and surrounding oneself with supportive people. Stepping into one's authentic self often requires challenging societal expectations and conforming to one's own values. Identity shifts can be destabilizing, but it's important to remember that worthiness is not tied to career titles or achievements. Self-awareness and self-trust are crucial in navigating career pivots and making decisions based on the present moment. Focusing on what can be controlled and accepting the uncertainty of the future can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Genuine connections and relationships are more valuable than external markers of success. Sound Bites "I made it my mission to help others learn these lessons before they get to the place where they don't have time to change." "I'm finally getting back to what I actually thought was my authentic desire which was to become a therapist. So why not start now?" "I constantly was striving for external validation, mostly by people close to me, and I never could do enough." "What are some of the things as you started emerging from this, stepping more into your authentic self, doing these things that felt like they were infinitely more aligned with who you should have been this entire time, what did that look like?" "I'm so glad I joined the Air Force. I really loved it. And I think I could have found a place where I was, you know, the healer as part of the mission." "Control the controllables, but be able to really feel the human experience, which is a whole spectrum of emotions." About Jillian Rigert, DMD, MD Life & Leadership Coaching After pushing herself to exhaustion in pursuit of worth through achievements, Jillian realized her path as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon was unsustainable. Feeling trapped, she risked my career to save her life and transitioned into oral medicine, academia, and research. Keywords: anxiety, goals, high functioning anxiety, coaching, stress, burnout, depression, interpretation, habits, anxiety, mindset, fear, breathwork, awareness, pause buttons Some takeaways: Anxiety can prevent individuals from reaching their goals by causing overthinking and perfectionism. Coaching can help individuals recognize patterns and habits associated with anxiety and develop strategies to manage it. Stress and anxiety have overlapping symptoms, but anxiety is often characterized by a habitual interpretation of stressors. Understanding the difference between stress and anxiety can lead to more effective coping mechanisms. There is an overlap between burnout, anxiety, and depression, and it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena. Fear and excitement are similar in how they feel in our bodies; it's all about interpretation. Breathwork, such as exhaling deeply and pausing, can help calm the nervous system and promote clear thinking. Developing awareness of physical sensations and emotions without judgment is key to managing anxiety. Creating pause buttons in daily life allows for moments of reflection and increased awareness. Sound Bites "I had been sick like a million times, but never actually sick." "Anxiety is wishing for what you don't want." "Anxiety is very much a feeling inside of your body." "Fear and excitement are actually very, very similar in terms of how they feel in our bodies, but it's all about how we interpret it." "Exhale until you're almost as flat as you can get yourself, like pancake style exhale, where you push more air out than it probably feels safe to do, and then breathe in and then pause." "I want you to close your eyes and I want you to picture a time when you were anxious. Tell me about that time. So I'll have them close their eyes and they'll tell me, I'm like, you don't have to tell me all the gory details. I don't need to know. You don't have to go back into anything that's going to trip your trigger. I'm like, just tell me about what it feels like to be anxious, and like, talk to me about how your body feels."
There's SO much BS out there when it comes to the phases of burnout. Let me DEBUNK these! Instead, let's talk about how burnout progresses. I'll introduce you to the concept of the high achiever burnout cycle, where high achievers experience burnout in a cyclical fashion. I'm also going to break down the stages of this cycle, starting with a well-intentioned busyness all the way to the burnout breakdown. We'll talk about the importance of catching burnout early and making changes to prevent it from progressing further and where the easiest and most effective places to catch burnout and reverse it are! Enjoy! For show notes, head to coachellyn.com/podcast, and, of course, follow me on Instagram OR check out my YouTube Channel for more! Keywords burnout, stages of burnout, high achiever burnout cycle, well-intentioned busyness, overwhelm, denial, detachment, mental collapse, physical collapse, recovery, sustainable success, mindset, values Some Takeaways Burnout does not follow a linear progression and the commonly accepted stages of burnout may not accurately represent how it actually progresses. High achievers often experience burnout in a cyclical fashion, going through phases of burnout and recovery. Catching burnout early and making changes can prevent it from progressing to more severe stages. Mindset and values play a crucial role in managing burnout and preventing its recurrence. Recovering from burnout is easier the earlier it is caught, but it may take longer to recover if it has progressed to more advanced stages. Sounds Bites "I just don't agree with. So we're going to kind of debunk some of those things that I just kind of think are BS out there." "I think high achievers in particular, and if you guys know me at all, you know my entire like business and how I approach burnout is built around high achievers." "We're doing things, we're filling our time with things that feel good." Resources Click here to download the stages of burnout PDF!
