Managing your Unmanaged Mind with Julia Barrow Transformative Principal 388 We have unmanaged minds. Students in a positive peer culture would change the way they were thinking. You’re coming at them from a label, but coming from specific behaviors will make your conversations more effective. Dr. Julia Barrow is a former Teacher, Principal, Executive Principal of 19 schools PK through 12, Vice President of Operations for Alternative Ed Programs and Partnerships with School Districts - over thirty years of experience. Curriculum Writer, Program Developer, Assessment Developer, Trainer, Grant Writer, all the things. Doctorate in Professional Leadership - dissertation study focused on normative culture and positive peer pressure. * Before and after - detached * It all goes down to the culture on your campus. * Who do you want to be and what you want your students and staff to say about your leadership? * Students in a positive peer culture would change the way they were thinking. * Deliberate culture. * Before they were in a normative culture, they just reacted. * With a normative culture they had a better way of responding. * We have unmanaged minds. * Your unmanaged mind gives you a response to your circumstance. * You have to think about what people are coming with and what they believe is truth. * We all want to be accepted. * If you’re in a negative peer group, you fall into it because you don’t want to stand out. * Coming from love vs coming from fear. * All of our emotions are rooted in two primary emotions: love and fear. * Able to actually move forward when you come from love. * Challenge to the leader: * Write down all the negative things you see about each person. * You’re coming at them from a label, but coming from specific behaviors will make your conversations more effective. * Unexamined thoughts create emotions that cause them to act in bullying behavior. * How to be a transformative principal? Spend some time growing you personally. The more you grow the more your teachers grow. We’ve just started a second lockdown in England – with other parts of the United Kingdom also going through variations of the same. But what if you’re pregnant? What’s going through your mind and what are you concerned about? As the pandemic’s gone on, we’ve heard about women being on their own for scans, deliveries and sadly, miscarriages too. And an enquiry has just started into a rise in stillbirths over the last Lockdown. Chloe discusses the issues with Bertie Harlev-Lam, Executive Director for Professional Leadership at the RCM ,also a working midwife, and Jo Mountfield, Vice President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Southampton, and a consultant obstetrician at University Southampton Hospital. Has the Covid crisis helped to usher in a future of flexible working? A new report from the campaign Flex Appeal says while that forced remote working during a pandemic is not the same as flexible working, there are lessons that can be learned from lockdown. They have surveyed more than a thousand employers about how their work has changed since March, and which aspects their employees are keen to keep longer-term. Chloe is joined by Anna Whitehouse aka Mother Pukka who co-founded Flex Appeal, and Louise Deverell-Smith who runs Daisy Chain, an online platform that matches flexible employers with flexible job-seekers. How did the humble biscuit become so embedded in our culture? Lizzie Collingham’s book The Biscuit: The History of a Very British Indulgence explains how it began as the foodstuff of explorers, then, sweetened, found its way into the recipe books of ladies of the manor and finally becoming our customary snack with a cup of tea. Chloe talks to Lizzie about the stories of women involved in biscuit production through the ages and asks her the all-important question: to dunk or not to dunk? What is a forest school and what are the benefits and challenges of outdoor learning? Can it re-engage children after the broken learning of the pandemic? Chloe discusses the issues with Sara Collins, Deputy Chair of the Forest School Association and founder of the Nature Premium campaign, which is calling for ring-fenced funding for schools to provide nature-based learning. She’s joined by Dr Rowena Passy, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth’s Institute for Education. Presented by Chloe Tilley Producer: Louise Corley Editor: Beverley Purcell
In this segment, Adam Simmons and Darryl Murdock interview Mike Grochol on the topic of Young Professional Leadership in Defense Contracting. Discussing what it takes in today’s world to be successful as a young professional in the defense contracting world. The advantages: the youth factor and people wanting to be part of your success, being underestimated, the close-up an understanding of the mission. The disadvantage: being underestimated (the double-edged sword), how lack of experience hurts you, how a limited network hurts you. Ultimately it’s our ability (or inability) to build a team that can adequately address our market needs that sets us apart. You have to use the mystique to your advantage while proving over and over that you also know what it takes to win. This latest acquisition taught Mike so much the difference between a mom and pop small business and real enterprise expandable business. There are fundamental differences in how you plan and operate that are embedded in the walls. About Us Project Geospatial is a podcast hosted by Adam Simmons dedicated to increasing awareness of Geospatial Technology, education resources, and industry best practices. The one-size-fits-all approach to leadership development offered by other programs doesn’t consider an individual’s personality and capabilities. You can’t learn ‘skill x’ one day and expect to be a better leader the next. True leadership growth requires ongoing development and feedback. ----more---- What is billed as leadership development today is usually focused on leadership as a skill. Is it really true that if we do not keep learning in today's fast-paced international marketplace, we'll fall behind? Everyone benefits from having a set of technical skills that ground them into their respective fields, whether those talents are in engineering, accounting, manufacturing, or marketing. But what about those soft skills, those abilities that allow leaders to be effective with and through other people at work? Today as more and more companies do business across cultures, having a set of strong people skills that enable leaders to empower, motivate, and continue to develop their teams is good business. Everyone wins – the team whose skills are continually being developed, the leader who now gets to do more and more interesting work because she's empowered and developed her people to work at a higher level of output, and certainly the organization that employs them which now has a stronger culture of engagement, performance, and overall bench strength.

There are three “I” to Developing Masterful Personal and Professional Leadership. The first is, information; information without application result in zero transformation. In fact this kind of information gathering can be counterproductive. There is a part of the brain that is specifically designed to look for information. However this part of the brain is not discerning and will in fact be looking for information to justify something it already believes…even if what it believes has you stuck at a plateau. Therefore many people find the information and do nothing with it. Therefore the second I to Developing Masterful Leadership is implementation. The third “I” of Developing Masterful Leadership is Integration. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
