It's common for doctors to be asked to do more and more, or to do things they don't want to, or things that they think shouldn't be done. Boundaries then are a way that we can set parameters of how we think the world should be. Claire tells me that boundaries are not about saying no, they are not fixed rigid walls, but something that is decided and negotiated on a case by case basis. Understanding, and demonstrating that you get the other person's perspective can be helpful if you have to say no. Taking a pause is also useful, and if you are struggling then starting with small boundaries can also be helpful. But most importantly, knowing yourself is key to deciding where your boundaries are, and what you say yes and what you say no to.Claire is a GP in Hackney, and has worked in the NHS for 27 years. She is a coach and a writer. She helps exhausted doctors prioritise themselves and rescue their NHS careers. She is also a gardener, adventurer and a mum. Dr Jillian Rigert has doctorate degrees in dentistry and medicine with a specialty in oral medicine. She is an Air Force veteran, a postdoctoral research fellow in Radiation Oncology, and Certified Life and Professional Leadership Coach. Through coaching and her YouTube channel (‘A Life True to You'), Jillian's mission is to help people discover or rediscover what it means to create a life true to themselves - free from societal pressures that lead them astray. Outside of work, she loves to spend time with her dog, Reese, and is an avid runner. Jillian started her career by fast tracking into a dental school and dedicating herself to becoming an Air Force oral and maxillofacial surgeon. A “leader” to her at that time meant chasing high achievements, doing the hardest job we could possibly do, pushing ourselves to the limits mentally and physically, being confident and taking on formal leadership titles including her roles as an Air Force officer and surgeon trainee. In 2014-2017, her perspective started to unravel. Sleep deprivation, self-doubt, under-nourishment and exhaustion from constantly pushing herself to the limits led to serious illness which nearly cost her life. Her experience helped her to see how societal values often lead us astray from what truly matters in life and altered her perspective on what it means to be a leader. Now, being a leader to Jillian includes living with integrity, in alignment with your core values, advocating for what we believe is right, and creating a psychologically safe environment for others to do the same. A leader lives it to give it - in other words “walks the talk.” Jillian believes that learning how to be leaders of our own lives is a great and important first step in learning how to be a leader for others in a way that's authentic and sustainable. In this episode, Jillian and I chatted about:Her leadership roles Her leadership style Her leadership journey The leaders that helped her rise The challenges she faced on her journey How she navigated those challenges How she thinks you can become a strong and kind leader Her ‘take home' leadership messages for the listeners, and What she is currently excited to be working on.Jillian can be found and/or contacted via the following online platform addresses: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JillianRigertDMDMDLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillian-rigert/Website: https://jillianrigertcoaching.com/Please reach out to Dr Harrison for individual coaching and/or organisational training via dr.adam@coachingmentoringdoctors.com.His web address and social media profile links / handles include:www.dradamharrison.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dradamharrison/www.youtube.com/c/DrAdamPhysicianCoachhttps://www.facebook.com/coachingmentoringdoctors/https://www.instagram.com/dradamharrison/He has co-written a new online course entitled ‘How to be Assertive, Maintain Boundaries, and Say “No!”‘ which can be accessed instantly here for only £55/$70:

The inability of people in recovery to establish and set healthy boundaries is one of the biggest struggles I see with people when they are building their new lives.  In fact, this is the method I see most people trying to set boundaries which is exactly what I did for the first many years I was sober:If someone does something that upsets us, we react negatively to it with maybe anger, sadness, storming out of the room, passive aggressiveness, or whatever your preferred method is to show you are pissed off.  Then we assume they know what they did, why it pissed off us, why they shouldn't do it anymore, and then we assume that we made ourselves clear.  Then the person does it again and we repeat the cycle to only get more and more upset each time.So how do we establish healthy boundaries?  How do we communicate them to others?  What should we do when people don't respect our boundaries?  And how do make sure we are respecting others' boundaries also?Well, that is exactly what we are going to be talking about in this episode.

Dr. Vertrees is a general surgeon and certified coach. She is an Army veteran and was deployed 3 times to Afghanistan and Iraq. She is the Founder of 'BOSS' (the 'Business of Surgery Series') with includes a popular podcast and coaching program where she teaches the lessons not taught in residency.  Dr. Vertrees realized that medical school and residency helped her become a great technical surgeon, but she soon learned that there were several career aspects that residency did not cover.  She trained in the military and, once her commitment was up, she realized she had no idea how to find a job, negotiate her contract, or code notes and cases. She created the 'BOSS Business of Surgery Series' as a way to address those topics, because if she needed to know it, others probably needed to as well.  Over time, she realized that even more topics were necessary. In this bonus episode, we are discussing a controversial topic - toxic grandparents.   ✅ Toxicity in a family doesn't leave anyone out regardless of a person's title or role in your life, and this can include grandparents. ✅  As a culture, we place importance on having an extended family, with grandparents being a big part of that. When grandparents are healthy, this makes sense. When grandparents are abusive, it does not make sense. ✅ When you cut off from your parents this will often  include protecting your children from the negative influence of their grandparents. ✅ Not all grandparents are created equal and too often grandparents are perceived as harmless elderly folks who love to spoil their grandkids. ✅ How To's and Boundaries to Set NOTE: If you are on the other side of this issue, please listen to Episode 19 on Toxic Adult Children.  My social media pages and podcast episodes are not open to a host of non-productive commentary around topics that you may not agree with. Do you feel like your superpower is reading people's minds and anticipating their needs? _ Are you extremely sensitive to the energies around you? _ Do you often wonder if your emotions are entirely your own? _ Well, you JUST might be an empath….. or are you? _ _ This week is about the polarity between the empath and the narcissist. _ First your host, Stephanie, talks about the “7 days of darkness” we've recently found ourselves on the other side of (woohoo!). What's responsible for these “blackouts” is a curious phenomena of massive shifts in Earth's electromagnetic frequency, also known as the Schumann Resonance. It may be the very thing that's measuring our collective enlightenment on Earth. And then, she implores you to throw these identifiers out. _ Why, you ask? _ You'll have to listen to find out! _ She also covers the narcissist, who goes hand-in-hand with the concept of empaths. She discusses the differences between the overt and covert narcissist and how you may engage in narcissistic behavior. _ Finally, she finishes with how you can maintain balance and empowerment while developing your empathic qualities. In this part 3 episode, I am sharing with you 10 Ways to Set and Maintain Boundaries. By setting boundaries, you respect your own time, needs and wants. I also discuss how to recognize other people's boundaries. When you do not set boundaries you are sacrificing your happiness and you tend to enable others and not allow them to learn how to help themselves. Setting boundaries is a great way to separate your feelings from other people feelings while protecting you emotional, mental and physical well-being. Yes, boundary setting may not feel good if you're not use to being consistent with setting them, but they are surely necessary. Scale Without Burnout with Andrew Sillitoe

Many business owners are unaware of the conflict they have with work and the underlying stress it creates. We often talk about learning to say no to others requests, but what about the demands in our own heads? How many times have we said no to the telephone, or turning on the laptop when spending time with our families or friends, then find ourselves having a quick peek to check on things? Before we know it, we are lost in a conversation with a client that could have waited two days or even a week.Let's make sure we are in control of our free time and how we experience it.When we set boundaries with ourselves and say “I am not available today or this week” we learn to find harmony in our professional and personal lives.Otherwise, we are allowing other people to own our diaries and steal precious time, eventually leading to increased overwhelm and potentially burnout.Enjoy the Easter holidays – let's make a commitment to taking a real break. How do you set boundaries? Burnout is a common consequence of chronic stress. We experience burnout when we over exhaust our mind and body. Common symptoms of burnout are intense lack of motivation, negativity, and detachment. During episodes of burnout, I don't know about you, but I  can barely recognize myself.   From the outside looking in, scaling a business is an exciting and motivating experience! However, as freelancers and (solo)entrepreneurs this type of growth can be terrifying and lonely. Our minds race a thousand miles ahead of us and we feel like we need to hustle our hearts out in order to keep up.   In this episode, I take you through my most recent experience with burnout while I was on a beach vacation with my fiance and friends. Not only did my chronic stress affect my time to R+R, it affected those around me as well. This experience shook me. When I got home I was determined to not let that happen again. I created a nine-step self-care routine to keep my mind and body in check. By preventing burnout we can better manage our health, happiness, and business. This episode is great for freelancers and entrepreneurs at any stage of their BSQ journey because we all experience stress differently. No matter how big or how small our stressors may seem, we can use these tools to circumvent self-sabotage. In my professional utopia, I would have endless hours of availability and energy to show up 100% for my clients, family, and friends. But back on Planet Earth, I have a finite amount of hours (and matcha tea breaks) I can devote to each while also taking care of myself. In this episode, I will walk you through 5 Ways to Take Back Your Schedule. This is a great listen for entrepreneurs and freelancers spread too thin across professional and personal obligations. Boundaries are the limit or space between you and something else or someone else. What's crazy is that some of us A-Player / Entrepreneur types have an extremely tough time maintaining strong boundaries. I definitely fall in that category. After having frustrated days and feeling burnt out or pulled in every direction, I needed it to stop. So, I decided to come up with a series of boundaries that I could implement in my business and life in order to protect my energy. In this episode, I'm sharing exactly how I came up with those boundaries and how you can too. I talk about how to define boundaries, establish them and maintain them (even if they've been obliterated).   In This Episode You Will Learn: Why boundaries are so important How to define and create boundaries for yourself What to do if a boundary has been crossed + how to re-establish it Resources:   Web Page: http://avanimiriyala.com/boundaries   Check out my website at http://avanimiriyala.com.
