Lickers Jay and Deon wax poetic on ten of their favorite records from their respective collections which are filed under the letter J. Their choices lead to discussions on Blindboy Boatclub (he rules), the origins of their nicknames (do you even know these guys?), another blind-bought Burger Records beauty (Jay is a total Burger fanboy), Steve Albini (R.I.P.), and much more. Tune in and rock out! --- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-seventh episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru I, so naturally, they went with J. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2023 81:52

In this episode, we invite acclaimed New York writer Jim Farber to tell us about his 50-year career and his experiences of "growing up gay to a Glam Rock soundtrack", to cite the title of a superb 2016 piece he wrote for The New York Times. We start by asking the former Chief Music Critic of the New York Daily News about his Scarsdale childhood and his formative musical memories. He explains how Alice Cooper's 'I'm Eighteen' became a portal to both obsessive fandom and the urgent need to write about rock for Creem, Circus and Rolling Stone. Additionally he recalls interviewing Robert Fripp for Creem in 1978 and then being reunited with King Crimson's prog-rock dissident in 2022 when the extraordinary In the Court of the Crimson King film came out. After Barney quotes from "The Androgynous Mirror", Jim's brilliant essay for the 1998 book Rolling Stone: The Seventies, we discuss Glam Rock and listen to clips from Keith Altham's 1971 audio interview with T. Rex's Marc Bolan. A brief digression about Queen and Freddie Mercury leads to Jim's thoughts on the openly gay, overhyped and ill-fated Jobriath, who died 40 years ago this week. The awful loss of Sinéad O'Connor on the eve of this episode's recording prompts reflections on the Irish singer's blazing talent and turbulent life — particularly from our guest, who interviewed her three times for the Daily News. Finally, Mark quotes from newly-added library interviews with John Lennon and Kraftwerk's Ralf Hütter, while Jasper wraps things up with notes on the Strokes (and the White Stripes) and Belle & Sebastian (and Norah Jones). Many thanks to special guest Jim Farber. Follow him on Twitter @JimFarberMusic. Pieces discussed: Growing up gay to a glam rock soundtrack, Soft Cell's Marc Almond, Robert Fripp, Marc Bolan audio, Jobriath, Jobriath @ the Bottom Line, More Jobriath, Glitter rock's lingering shadow, Sinéad O'Connor audio, Skinéad, Lennon & Yoko, Kraftwerk, Primal Scream, Strokes/Stripes, Pet Shop Boys and Belle & Sebastian.

Today's Pride 2023 episode focuses on two pathbreaking pop artists from the 1960s and 1970s, who were undervalued or even reviled at the time in which they were active, but whose contribution, importance, and influence on today's pop music scene is indisputable. In reverse chronological order, Bruce Wayne Campbell (1946–1983), a brilliant if emotionally unstable pianist, composer, and singer, was refashioned by a 1970s entrepreneur/Svengali named Jerry Brandt, into the would-be pop icon Jobriath. Brandt secured Jobriath a lucrative deal with Elektra Records and plastered Jobriath's face (and body) all over the media, including a huge billboard at Times Square and trumpeted him as “rock's truest fairy,” (in contrast to pretenders or closeted figures like David Bowie, Marc Almond, and Elton John). The relentless overexposure, coupled with the unapologetic homophobia of the rock music scene, led to a spectacular fall from grace, and Jobriath's premature death ad the age of 36, one of the earliest victims of the AIDS epidemic. By contast, Jackie Shane (1940–2019) was raised in a loving supportive environment, and announced her true gender to her mother at the age of 13. She went on to become first a fixture on the chitlin circuit, performing alongside such figures as Chubby Checker, Little Richard, and Etta James, finally establishing herself as one of the premier figures on the Toronto music scene in the 1960s. Jackie's career also had its ups and downs, its near-misses, and was marred by catastrophic associations with various toxic males. As a result, she finally walked away from her massive local celebrity in 1971 and never looked back. But throughout her abbreviated career and beyond, she kept a strong sense of self and never allowed herself to be used or abused. Interest in Jackie surged in 2014 with the release of an elaborate CD retrospective which was subsequently nominated for an Emmy. Jackie was philosophical about this new interest in her work, but was grateful that she had not, as she had previously feared, been forgotten. Both of these artists are generously represented on the episode with musical examples that highlight their historical importance as well as their influence on future generations of queer musical artists that extends to the present day. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Strage minns sitt första möte med The Ark på en blöt efterfest och de två glamrockhjältarna väljer favoritlåtar med artister som Jobriath, Judas Priest, Nina Hagen och Brian Eno. This is episode number 9 of Artful Thought, recorded live at the University of San Francisco’s KUSF studio, which aired on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019. On the live show, I named the first episode of a 2-part special, “All the Pride and No Prejudice”, reverting back to my DJ Mr. Darcy persona as I jammed-and-gabbed out to a playlist made up of Queer Artists, seminal through current to celebrate the month of Pride. The playlist is chalked full of fantastical artists, starting with Ma Rainey, Lesley Gore, Liberace, Queen, Tracy Chapman, Sylvester, RuPaul featuring Martha Wash, Jobriath, Elton John vs. Pnau, George Michael, David Bowie, The Internet, and Vampire Weekend. In mic breaks, I talk about each artist and related LGBTQIA issues from past to present. Between Pride Parts 1 and 2, I do a scattering of commentary on music from decades starting from the 1920s to current, as well as historical/cultural landmarks, including the “Lavender Scare,” and personal ponderings about the other “Q.” Both episodes come back to engaging with an ongoing question about gender-sexuality exploration while respecting boundaries that refrain from Queer appropriation. Due to copyright laws, I had to cut the music from the recording, but have included my archived Pride Part 1 playlist to accompany the edited cut. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/darcy-allred/message

In this episode we make another trip through the annals of time back to that trippy establishment The Chelsea Hotel. Lynn gives you a brief run down of the history of this iconic landmark first and then brings us the tale of Jobriath. Who is Jobriath, you might ask, well she will tell you all about this amazing gay musical visionary. Come hear about the giant light up Penis that almost made it to the Paris Opera stage. Then a very pneumonia stricken Regina tells us the tale of Sid and Nancy. Nancy Spungen met her end in room 100 at the good ol' Chelsea, and up until recently common belief is that Sid Vicious was the murderer. But was he really? Heroin is a hell of a drug.Find us at www.disturbinginterests.comFacebook The Disturbing Interests PodcastTwitter @podcast_di, @EvileQueen, @RatsnHatsEmail us at disturbinginterests@gmail.comInstagram @NekoThePodcat, @DIPodcast, @LynnTheArtDorkSupport the show (http://patreon.com/disturbinginterests)

Bowie. Bolan. The Dolls. These are the names that we have hallowed through the decades as bastions of glam rock, the genre that defined the early ‘70s urban rock scene. Simultaneously swirling around the glam galaxy was a soft-spoken, fair-featured piano prodigy who called himself Jobriath, and though he is less featured in the annals of music history, his influence is no less felt by generations of flamboyant, theatrical rock performers who came after him. Often cited as the first openly gay rock star, Jobriath rocketed from musical theatre actor and folk songwriter to full-on glam star in seemingly no time at all, thanks to aggressive marketing strategies from his Svengali-like manager, Jerry Brandt. Jobriath burned hot and bright for a few years, but his star fell just as quickly as it rose, and he spent the remainder of his days living out of the pyramid apartment on the roof of the Chelsea Hotel before his premature death in 1983. In this episode, we unpack the many ways Jobriath’s story — though shorter than his glam peers — has volumes to teaches us about the genre, changing social norms between the last decades of the 20th century and now, gender and sexuality, and why in the h*ck someone would even want to be famous in the first place.

Let's Talk About Jobriath, the Openly Gay '70s Rocker Who Inspired Morrissey and Def Leppard

Jobriath was a '70s glam-rocker who, like David Bowie, Elton John and Freddie Mercury, sang songs about space. But unlike any of them, he was openly gay in the 1970s - long before the people of earth were ready to welcome him with open arms. This week we talk about his spiky piano music, his space-angel beauty, and the hype machine that set him up for a cruel downfall. His influence continues with artists from Morrissey to Def Leppard's Joe Elliott.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
