LIQUID SKY's hyper-stylized neon soaked aesthetic & aggressively bizarre, completely electronic score has continued to influence fashion, music and pop-culture in general since initial release in 1983.It's also a science fiction picture. 'Liquid Sky' was a $500,000 largely experimental film by the Russian expat director Slava Tsukerman that sprung from a group of friends and colleagues surrounding School of Visual Arts acting teacher Bob Brady. What's it about? Heroin, Cocaine, Aliens, Art, Fashion, Dancing, Nightclubs, Science, Sex, Lesbian Knife Fights, Androgyny, Shrimp, Berlin...and that's just the first 45 minutes. Much more than just a so-bad-it's-good b-movie, 'Liquid Sky' has endured and is best appreciated for its fantastic design, cinemotography, and score and the period specificity of it's troupe of amateur actors. It has to be seen to be believed, and it's worth checking out! Join me! Get the very cool 4K restoration DVD of Liquid Sky here. Listen to the groundbreaking Fairlight CMI synthesizer soundtrack.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the ground-breaking 1982 cyberpunk movie, Tron – written and directed by Steven Lisberger, starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes.A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. This is one of the first cyberpunk films I remember watching as a little kid. I remember being dazzled by the otherworldly raw special effects of cyberspace, thinking about how cool it would be to be zapped into my favorite video game (I always wanted to be in Space Quest and travel the universe with Roger Wilco and the Pirates of Pestulon). Tron was one of the landmark 1982 cyberpunk films along with Blade Runner, Burst City, and Liquid Sky. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! We had to do it. We had to return to that ol' Rebel Moon to see what happened to all our favorite space pals, like... uh... there was the one guy who trained like, a bird dragon? And, um... Lady Sword-haver? And Charlie Hu-- no, wait, he was killed in the first one because he was a traitor. There's definitely a Scargiver in this one, though. That one we're 100% on. Oh Zack Snyder. It was a treat to chat with the minds behind one of the coolest and most significant stores in rave and NYC history. From the early 1990s until the close of its second location in 1999, Liquid Sky was a clothing shop, a record store, a hang-out zone, a permanent art installation—it was a lot of things to a lot of young people, the grandest of countercultural “third places” the 90s saw. Their store merch was home to Claudia Rey's one-of-a-kind pieces of street fashion (a lot of it predating the term itself), and to Carlos “Soul Slinger's” expertly curated vinyl selections, much of it exclusive DJ imports that became a ground zero for British jungle and avant-garde breaks for NYC and, indeed, America. Stick around until the end of the interview for a mini-mix of tracks from the Weä album “Decentertainment,” a milestone release in the illbient genre from Liquid Sky's own label. (A UFO causes havoc in the New York downtown art scene, where sex and drugs mix together with casual cruelty and sometimes murder. It's pretty cool.) Starring Anne Carlisle, Paula E. Based on the novel Julia by the American writer Peter Straub, it is the first film realization of one of his books, and follows a woman who, after the death of her daughter, finds herself haunted by the vengeful ghost of a young girl in her new home.” But first! "I was taught that I should come to Chicago, become an independent woman. And my prince would come, and he would be a producer, and he would get me a podcast, and I would make my living waiting on tables. I would wait—'til 30, 'til 40, 'til 50. And I was taught that to be a podcaster, one should be fashionable, and to be fashionable is to be androgynous. And I am androgynous not less than David Bowie himself. And they call me beautiful, and I kill with my cunt. Isn't it fashionable?" The Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, Craig Hammill) discusses the mind-blowing 1983 cult hit transgressive masterpiece LIQUID SKY told from a bracingly female perspective, co-written by its female star Anna Carlisle who plays male and female roles, Nina V. Kerova, and directed by Russian immigrant Slava Tsukerman. The Team also looks at what "transgressive" really means (using dark humor and shocking situations to convey messages mainstream audiences often ignore) and how the genre is alive and kicking with 2021's Palm D'Or winning shocker TITANE directed by Julia Ducournau. #transgressivecinema
The Hunger (1983) This 1983 erotic horror films stars Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie. The plot revolving around a love triangle between a doctor dealing with sleep and aging research and a vampire novel is loosely based on a novel by Whitley Streiber. Though releases to mixed review, the film has a growing cult following with the goth subculture of society. The band Bauhaus appear playing their single Bela Lugosi's dead whilst silent film legend Bessie Smith makes her final film appearance as the elderly woman at a book signing. Liquid Sky (1982) Produced on a budget of £500,000 dollars, the film would reflect on the Elecroclash club scene that was emerging in NYC, Paris, Berlin and London. Anne Carlisle plays the part of Margaret and Jimmy and helped produce the film. The film would be the highest income earner for an independent film that year making in excess of $1.7million. The film's cult status grows year on year and has earned its placed in the subculture of electroclash punk. Opening Credits/Introduction (1.51); Firey Kitten Podcast (10:30); Oh My GOD!!! This week, we are talking about New Wave punk films of the late 70s-80s! We cover a lot of terrain and parse how the punk ethos were represented in film, and the reaction to it. We get into these films specifically: Jubilee (1978), Liquid Sky (1982), Smithereens (1982), Stop Making Sense (1984) and True Stories (1986). There's also a documentary about Jubilee from 2003 that we recommend. It's called Jubilee: A Time Less Golden. It is worth checking out. And watch Jerrod Carmichael's 2022 special Rothaniel. It's amazing. Instagram: @release_pod Website: release.pictures Music by René j Núñez

I enjoy how easy it is to rhyme things with Katie's name, it really makes it easy for a lazy guy like me to make titles for her episodes. Regardless of that awesome fact, she's back, and we again discuss Liquid Sky, we were supposed to watch, but the only version that could be found was probably as awful as it always was, I was just used to it, being old and living through the VHS days. I had so many episodes of MacGuyver, but that's not the point, even though we didn't get to both watch the movie, this was still a great episode. Donald Borenstein is a freelance video director, editor, and one of my favorite online friends, whose posts on politics, culture, and media have been a highlight of my feed for years. This week we finally get to meet face to face (on Zoom) and talk about two of our respective favorite films, Lizzie Borden's Born in Flames (1983) and Slava Tsukerman's Liquid Sky (1982), both of which are essential viewing for anyone interested in radical politics and radical filmmaking practices. As works of sci-fi queer punk feminism, Born in Flames and Liquid Sky occupy a totally unique territory in the history of American politics and culture. In this conversation, Donald and I reflect on what makes these films “important” but also what makes them feel so fun and alive, and how they reshape the aesthetic and narrative boundaries of “political cinema.” For full episode subscribe at patreon.com/nostalgiatrap.
In honor of Pride month, we looked at two films that we felt were interesting celebrations of different aspects of the LGBTQ+ world. We don't think these movies are going to necessarily change anyone or make the world a better place, but they are both excellent, thoughtful, and most-of-all FUN! We start off with 1982's Liquid Sky, from director Slava Tsukerman and featuring an amazing dual-lead performance from Anne Carlisle. It is an arty science fiction tale that reminded us all of Repo Man, and that's a hell of a compliment from the cave dwellers! We follow that with a completely fabulous, zero budget sci-fi romp from 1991 called Vegas in Space. It was largely created by and stars legendary drag queen and activist Doris Fish as well as a cavalcade of colorful, funny and memorable drag queens and genetic women, trying to solve a mystery on an "all-female" pleasure planet. This is pure entertainment and an amazingly successful labor of love. We then chat about other things we've seen and events in our lives. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. 70 Movies We Saw in the 70s: Ep 20 — “It’s Alive!” (1974) There’s only one thing wrong with this episode of 70 Movies We Saw in the 70s… IT’S ALIVE!!! Hollywood sound wiz Jeff Kushner joins Mike and Ben to deliver a sprawling, mauling take on Larry Cohen’s killer baby classic, with diversions into ITs two sequels, IT LIVES AGAIN (1978) and IT’S ALIVE 3: ISLAND OF THE ALIVE (1987). Among the questions raised: • What’s so funny about a mutant baby living in a sewer? • Which vintage ’70s horror film TV ad caused more cardiac events among schoolchildren: SUSPIRIA; MAGIC; or DAWN OF THE DEAD? • Larry Cohen, John P. Ryan, and Michael Moriarty: Jewish-Irish Love Connection? • How did white go-go boots, psychedelic wallpaper, and dainty Florence Nightingale nurse hats play in punky-disco '77? • Where were YOU the day the filming of Q stopped Manhattan’s morning rush with an unannounced, unlicensed helicopter-vs-machine-guns battle atop the Chrysler building? • Circa-1984, what was Larry Cohen doing hanging out in NYC’s performance art scene with the casts of SMITHEREENS and LIQUID SKY? • What is the connection between Robert Blake’s 1985 NBC series HELL TOWN (where he played a two-fisted priest) and Dee Snider’s STRANGELAND? • Does anybody have any leftover “Super-Vision” 3D glasses from the ’80s?
