A heavyweight  alliance of some of the UK's most familiar sporting voices arrives at Series Two; Paralympic Feels.  John Inverdale, Lee McKenzie, Sonja McLaughlan, Jonathan Overend and Andy Stevenson - all presenters at Paralympic Games for either TV and Radio - are your hosts for a series of incredible stories, running through 'what-would-have-been' the 2020 Paralympics.  The team reflect on remarkable achievements they've witnessed, from the track and the pool to the blind football pitch.  This is elite sport we're talking about, after all.   Guesting on Episode One is probably the UK's most recognisable Paralympian; Tanni Grey-Thompson. Baroness Grey-Thompson, winner of 11 Paralympic Gold Medals, is a cross bench Life Peer in the House of Lords with many positions of responsibility within British society.   Her frustrations with the treatment of disabled people, particularly in the workplace, become clear when she draws Covid-comparisons with "non-disabled" workers.   She's acutely aware of the issues within disability sport which threaten future Paralympics.  How can the classification system be improved?  A thought-provoking conversation with hosts Jonathan Overend, John Inverdale and Sonja McLaughlan.   Plus House of Lords dress codes, Zoom mix-ups and tackling "The Rock" Who wins?!

After the magnificence that was Di Binley and Episode Three, Broken Oars is back with a humdinging corker of an Episode Four (they said modestly).   Released on the day that Jurgen Grobler, the greatest high performance coach in sporting history, stepped down from his role as Head Coach of British Rowing either through luck, insider knowledge of what was coming or happenstance we find ourselves celebrating some of the greatest hits of his legacy.    Let's be honest, it was luck.   In Episode Four, then, one of us breaks the other foot, the other laughs about it, we do our housekeeping (or as we're now calling it, airing our dirty laundry in public), and we stop John Inverdale and other salaried BBC presenters from stealing the catchphrases and insights Broken Oars has generated so far by pointing out that they're ours and they're copyrighted.   We float the idea of launching an official Broken Oars 'No James Cracknells Left Behind' t-shirt; and ask Hypatia from York to step in to settle the debate as to whether it was the ancient Greeks or Romans who originated the bath house culture, thus giving rise to the word 'bathetic' (could have something to do with drama, but we're rowers, so we aren't sure).   Then, and only then, do we get to the main course: a full and frank discussion of which GB Heavyweight Men's Coxless Four Olympic win was the best. We argue about judging criteria (purely and simple, which was the best row from a rowing perspective), we say things icons of the sport that means they'll probably never come on Broken Oars, but we also say things about other icons of the sport that means they might.   We discuss the glory and the dream that was Redgrave's Last Stand; we give props to a mighty Canadian boat at Athens; one of us (for the first time ever) says nice things about an Australian crew in the context of Beijing and then promptly ruins his reputation by going on to say equally nice things about the Australian crew at London 2012. We rhapsodise about the dominance of Louloudis et al at Rio and then we choose a winner before asking you to disagree with us on the Twitter feed.   Or agree with us, but you're all rowers, so that will never happen.   We go on to talk about the dangers of triumphalism and hubris when so many of Team GB's programmes are now beset with questions surrounding athlete welfare and wellbeing when coaching and programmes only have medals as their bottom line.   It's almost like we knew Jurgen was going.   And then we bugger off.   No James Cracknells were harmed in the making of this episode.   Full crew ... come forward to row.

John Inverdale hosts a remote Wrap Party for Series One; inviting Marcus Buckland, Sonja McLaughlan, Jonathan Overend and Mark Pougatch. This can mean only one thing; an editing nightmare for the producer.  But putting that aside, as we tend to do in the broadcast world, expect laughs, anecdotes and Olympic-based debate.  First though, in true party style, a rubbish game.  So prepare to be meet "Mystery Guest Dan".  When that's over, not before time, the team get stuck in.  They reflect on whether we're really missing Tokyo 2020,  discuss the future of the Olympics, including the role of e-sports, and assess the uncertainty over the rescheduled Games  in 2021.  John finally gets to tell his Simply Red story from Barcelona 1992.  Will it be worth the wait?  We doubt it.   Elsewhere, Sonja gets flummoxed by an Athens taxi  and Jonathan heads for cover in Beijing.  Plus mild jesting from Pougatch over the Cup Final result.  Inevitable.  Marcus' story about a wild night out in Atlanta is sadly, yet understandably, omitted.   It's a chaotic 40 minutes to end the series, disappointingly without the aid of refreshment, these are pros after all. Thanks for listening.

An attachment to London saw him reporting and sports bulletin-reading on the Radio 4 Today programme and then across to BBC Radio 2 to host Sport on 2. As BBC Radio 5 launched, he was to host the evening Drive-In, a programme he regards fondly, before helping to define the sound of the new Radio 5 live. RHLSTP #76: Bridget Christie - No Man Is Faster Than a Cheese. Richard has just had his third sixteenth birthday and has returned from Amsterdam with a hangover that might just last two weeks. His guest is former milk-maid, fellow West Country cheese enthusiast and Russell Brand lookalike, Bridget Christie. They discuss webbed toes, being the responsible one in a gang of Hell's Angels, John Inverdale's slip of the tongue, the deferred creative revenge on the tedious admin of life and who of the two of them is a more realistic representation for the hopes and dreams of new comedians. Plus a proper serious chat about feminism. Also ghosts that eat crisps and a disembodied hand that Richard somehow failed to equate to the time travelling finger or the ham hand, so seriously was he taking this as a proper interview.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Check out our website and become a badger and see extra content http://rhlstp.co.ukSee details of the RHLSTP tour dates http://richardherring.com/gigsBuy DVDs and Books at http://gofasterstripe.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Last week Roger Bolton spoke to the acting editor of The Archers, Julie Beckett, about the decision to put the moment of revelation in the Matt and Lilian saga in The Archers' digital-only offshoot Ambridge Extra. After the interview aired we received a deluge of complaints - more than about the coverage of the death and funeral of Baroness Thatcher. Listeners were "incandescent" with rage about both the decision itself and the interview, which many felt offered far from adequate answers. Given the weight of correspondence, this week Roger puts your frustrations to Jeremy Howe, commissioning editor for drama on Radio 4 and 4 Extra. And why has the BBC removed a free piece of technology, called Radio Downloader, which allowed listeners to download and keep BBC radio programmes? The BBC has promised to offer radio downloads from 2014. But how much radio will be available and for how long? Roger speaks to Mark Friend, Head of Multi-Platform for Radio. Is sorry the hardest word? We hear from listeners who were outraged by the comments made by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter John Inverdale about Wimbledon women's champion Marion Bartoli, during the finals coverage. But many felt his on-air apology the following day was not enough. We like to encourage creativity from our listeners - last week a song, before that some petite prose from our Twitter followers, and this week we hear from a listener who vents their spleen not in writing, nor on the telephone, or even on Twitter, but with an inventive mash-up of last week's interview with Julie Beckett. Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
