In this podcast, Father Laurence Freeman speaks about meditation in the monastic tradition. The word tradition is a dynamic word: it means 'transmission', it's a process in which we are constantly receiving, adapting and passing on -the very nature of the Gospel, a transmission of a living word. Laurence then continues on talking of John Main as a contemporary figure within this ancient tradition. This talk is part of A Week of Study and Practice at San Anselmo, Rome, Italy, 2015.

Laurence Freeman is a Benedictine monk and teacher and is Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) a global, inclusive contemplative community. He resides at the international centre of the WCCM at Bonnevaux Centre for Peace near Paris. With Irish and English roots, he was educated by the Benedictines and studied English Literature at New College, Oxford University. Before entering monastic life, he worked with the United Nations in New York, in Banking and Journalism. Fr. Laurence is a monk of the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. John Main was his teacher and Fr. Laurence assisted him in establishing the foundations of the Community. Laurence is the author of a number of books on Meditation. He teaches meditation in religious and secular contexts and works in interfaith dialogue. He travels extensively teaching and leading Retreats dialogues. Laurence sees meditation as opening the common ground of humanity and developing the contemplative consciousness that he believes the world today needs for its survival.  Some of the points discussed in this conversation: “Meditation itself is a universal wisdom, we find it in all the great spiritual families.” Lawrence's introduction to meditation by John Main. John Main's background. The roots of the mantra meditation taught by the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM): its connection with Ramana Maharshi and the Christian tradition of the desert fathers and John Cassian. “Meditation is a work of attention that gives deep care to the soul.” The loss of esoteric knowledge in the Cristian tradition. Three elements of religion: Mystical, Institutional, Intellectual. How easily the subtle and mystical elements of a religion can be lost. The distinction between contemplative consciousness and transitory yet transformative mystical experiences. Mindfulness is helpful but is preparatory for the deeper and more transformative work of single-pointed meditation. The inevitability of a “dark night” or purificatory stage. How a connection with your deeper self can transform the dying experience. The best scientists are mystics. The influence on society of the materialist paradigm, which fails to recognize that consciousness is fundamental. An encounter with the meaning of suffering at the heart of all great mystical traditions. Finding the still point within ourselves and meeting others from that place is a fundamental prerequisite to solving global problems. Importance of community. Convening leaders who understand the importance of contemplative consciousness and how this might transform the world. Connecting contemplative practice with the work necessary to heal the world. Can meditation alone ensure moral clarity? The issue of ethical integrity in the spiritual community. Good work is that which brings out the best in you and will bring benefits to others – that's ‘virtue'. “The fruits of the spirit are actually the life of God, burgeoning in your humanity.” “God became human so that human beings might become God.” If some Christians find this blasphemous, they should read the early Church fathers. Emptiness versus fullness in the Cristian tradition. St. Irenaeus: “We can never know God as an object, we can only know God by participating in his own self-knowledge”. Reincarnation vs. resurrection vs. purgatory. Meditation is the journey from the mind, into the heart. Three stages of meditation. 3-minute group meditation. How to learn more about Lawrence's work. Reflexiones de Adviento - Segunda Semana

WCCM Colombia Audio

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2020 6:01

Laurence Freeman https://ckarchive.com/b/38uphkh0eqmx

Daisy ❃ Meditation "The quality of our lives depends on the stillness that we find at the centre." John Main. Let your personal meditation practice be your own heart's expression. This is a special offering to help us all enter the practice of meditation with a great degree of confidence and experience success in this contemplative prayer of the heart. I believe we can receive inner instructions from the Holy Spirit, our teacher, that gives life to our prayers and meditations. Just as every single thing created by God is a UNIQUE EXPRESSION OF HIM so are we. Every lily of the field, every blade of grass, grain of sand, snowflake and yes, every daisy is uniquely made, one of a kind, expression of God in the earth. To broaden our understanding of meditation I envisioned a daisy flower ❃ with simple white petals, each one a part of the daisy, made by God yet expressed slightly differently, a different shade of glory. That is how I understand meditation, simple lovely white petals on a daisy, all belonging, all beautiful alone, while being creatively inspiring in any combination too. How to Begin 1. Select one or more of the Elements (petals) of Meditation ~ Stillness, Breath, One Word, Smiling, Feeling, Healing, Imagination, En Christo, New Wine, or my own personal combination called Sue's Meditation. 2. Use your intuition, select the elements you are drawn to. 3. Try different elements and combinations depending on how you feel. Don't worry if you think you are not doing it right, you cannot do it wrong! If you fidget just bring awareness back to your body and gently bring your physical body back to stillness. If your mind wonders, and it will, observe the thought, even feel the emotions connected to that thought, then LET IT GO. Just let it go like a hot air balloon, watch it rise. Some folks like to envision a stream or a river of flowing water and the stray thought floats away. The point is to intentionally set down and begin focusing your mind and heart on the element of the meditation you have chosen. Hint: if it seems daunting please try the Stillness or the Breath Meditation. Either one or together will help you establish quietness of mind and body. PURPOSE AND POINT: reduces stress, increases sleep, reduces pain, reduces stress, increases sleep, reduces pain, spiritually opens us to the fruit of our own spirit (God and I are ONE) , opens us to self knowledge which opens us to know God also unknowing, preconceptions, negative filters. Fr Laurence Freeman speaks about Ripeness, a stage of the journey where a new dimension of Knowledge is acquired, and our Identity becomes sharper as we become more mysterious to ourselves. This is the third talk of the Milestones Series recorded at the Meditatio Centre, in London. Wisdom shows the stages of life we all pass through in uniquely personal ways. Meditation as a way of wisdom illuminates these stages of the journey of life and has its own milestones. In this series of talks Fr Laurence will show how the journey of meditation deepens the journey of life and gives us the courage and vision to live life as fully conscious travellers. Laurence Freeman is a Benedictine monk and the spiritual successor of John Main. He is the Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation. Author, retreat leader and international speaker, Fr Laurence sees the contemplative as the essential dimension of all spirituality.

This is the first talk in the Milestones series. In this episode Fr Laurence Freeman speaks about the spiritual and psychological aspects of our life journey and how the practice of meditation leads to the recovery of the essential childlike state. John Main saw meditation as the recovery of our innocence. We recover the essential qualities we had as children, our innocence, through our mature relationship to our Source, our ontological parenthood in God as the ultimate ground of our being. Wisdom shows the stages of life we all pass through in uniquely personal ways. Meditation as a way of wisdom illuminates these stages of the journey of life and has its own milestones. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency thinks social media platforms might be able to teach the research and development community a thing or two about how to quickly connect information from around the globe. DARPA has just launched a new platform, called Polyplexus, which officials think might be able to dramatically speed up the research and development process by soliciting evidence about scientific questions from a global community and sharing ideas in real time. John Main is the program manager in DARPA's Defense Sciences Office. He spoke with Federal News Network's Jared Serbu about how Polyplexus works, and why DARPA built it. Like the other military services, the Air Force has knowingly underfunded its facility maintenance accounts in recent years while its O&M budgets have been squeezed. But officials have come to the conclusion that they'll never reverse the trend of buildings steadily falling into disrepair without both more money and a new scheme to prioritize funds. Richard Hartley, the Air Force’s principal deputy assistant secretary for installations, environment and energy talks with Federal News Network's Scott Maucione about the service's newly-released Infrastructure Investment Strategy. Later, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency thinks social media platforms might be able to teach the R&D community a thing or two about how to quickly connect information from around the globe. DARPA's John Main talks with Jared Serbu about a new platform called Polyplexus.

I first met Fr. Laurence at the New Contemplative Exchange in Snowmass Colorado in August of 2017. He was there as one of the representatives of what we affectionately call the "Big 4" networks of Christian contemplative practice - along with Fr. Thomas Keating (Contemplative Outreach, Ltd.), Rev. Dr. Tilden Edwards (Shalem Institute), Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM (Center for Action and Contemplation). Laurence Freeman was born in England in 1951 where he was educated by the Benedictines and studied English Literature at New College, Oxford University. Before entering monastic life, he had experience with the United Nations in New York, banking and journalism. Today Fr Laurence is a Benedictine monk of the Monastery of Sta Maria di Pilastrello, Lendinara, in the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto. He is Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation. In the monastery, his spiritual teacher was John Main. He helped Fr John to establish the first Christian Meditation Centre in London. At the invitation of the Archbishop of Montreal, in 1977, he accompanied John Main to establish a Benedictine community of monks and laypeople dedicated to the practice and teaching of Christian meditation. Fr Laurence studied theology at the Universite de Montreal and at McGill University. He made his solemn monastic profession in 1979 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1980. After the death of John Main in 1982, he continued the work of teaching meditation that had already begun to develop a global community. In 1991, Fr Laurence returned to England to establish the International Centre of the newly formed World Community for Christian Meditation, now present in more than a hundred countries and which has become a 'monastery without walls', in which he travels and teaches widely.

We are living in a world which is now routinely described as “Post-Truth”. Many institutions and figures in whom we have traditionally “believed” and relied upon have been revealed as deeply compromised. In the personal sphere, many of us have experienced such profound betrayals - sometimes at a very early stage in our lives - that the possibility of establishing trusting relationships can seem permanently beyond us. John Main says that the central point of Christian education – any education – is to prepare us for the experience of betrayal. The Buddha is reported to have discouraged his listeners from following a teaching simply because it sounds convincing and is delivered with authority. What, and who, can we rely on? What is there within the contemplative experience that can help to make trust a reality in our own lives? During our time together we will explore these questions, listening to each other’s words and sharing times of silence. Jim is an oblate of WCCM and a writer who worked for over thirty years in the mental health field with organisations such as Mind, the BBC and the Open University.
