S&P Futures are weakening this morning after multiple days of strong gains. Earnings and Trade Talks are the key themes for the day. Google released a strong earnings report yesterday; their operating income was a key highlight. Both the U.S. and China appear to be ready to start to de-escalate the trade tensions which is a key step that needs to happen in order for talks to begin. The U.S. will be announcing trade deals with South Korea, India and possibly Japan. The deals will be more political theater than a true agreement. On the economic front today is the final consumer sentiment reading for April from the Universite of Michigan. Earnings Seasons picks up next week with reports due out from HON, PFE, KO, V, SBUX, MSFT, META QCOM, AMGN, AAPL & AMZN. Q1 tech earnings have been coming in better than expected.
Global energy-intensive, high-temperature processing industries such as cement, steel and glass are losing more than 50% of their energy as waste heat during production. This amounts to approximately 400 TWh of power each year, which is almost one-seventh of the total European electrical power demand. Despite the availability of technologies to convert waste heat into electricity, the adoption of these solutions at an industry scale has been poor. INFERNO, a Horizon Europe-funded project, is tackling specific barriers, such as the efficiency and cost of renewable technologies, with the aim of developing a new hybrid platform system based on the integration of solid-state devices. This development will significantly contribute to sustainable energy harvesting from industrial waste heat. The project is led by Dr. Kafil M. Razeeb at Tyndall in collaboration with Technological University Dublin, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, IFW Dresden, Universite de Technologie de Troyes and F6S Ireland Limited. This collaboration between European experts in materials research, modelling, cell fabrication, thermoelectricity, and electronics, aims to develop new materials and systems for thermal power to electricity conversion. Development efforts target improvements regarding infrared sensitive low bandgap thermophotovoltaic cells, photonic metamaterials, as well as high-performance thermoelectric generator devices made of earth-abundant materials. Thermophotovoltaics is the direct conversion of radiant power into electricity using the photovoltaic effect, whereas thermoelectrics uses temperature gradient into electricity using Seebeck effect. This development will allow this new waste heat recovery system to operate over a wider range of temperatures, from 400 to 800°C, at least 25% more efficiently than the current state of the art systems. The primary advantage of the new system is its modularity without involving any major moving parts. The INFERNO project will deploy a modular, hybrid energy harvesting system that can be easily integrated into production lines, helping hard-to-decarbonize industries improve their system efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Three pilot demonstrations in Ireland, Germany and France will test the integrated hybrid system and its components. Dr Kafil M. Razeeb, Advanced Energy Materials Group, Tyndall, said: "Our aim is to develop a system combining different thermal to electrical energy harvesting technologies, which will be tested in real industrial setup. We hope to deploy a system that can be cost-effectively retrofitted and integrated for electricity production from industrial waste heat."

L'Harmattan. To celebrate 40 years since its launch, Rob Puricelli spoke to Dr John Chowning, the developer of FM synthesis, Dave Bristow and Gary Leuenberger, sound designers for the original DX7 and Manny Fernandez, who has worked on all Yamaha's FM projects from the Mk.II DX7 through to today's Montage M series.See the Show Notes for further details.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:55 - First Experiences Of The DX712:49 - Did The DX7 Meet Expectations?16:57 - The Feedback Loop17:51 - Creating And Sharing Sounds22:47 - A Career From Creating Patches27:55 - Sound Design Using FM31:36 - Hearing Your Own Sounds34:26 - Working With Don Lewis44:26 - Demonstrating The DX757:00 - FM Synthesis 40 Years On01:07:12 - Formant Shaping And The Future Of FMDr John Chowning BiogBorn in Salem, New Jersey in 1934, John Chowning spent his school years in Wilmington, Delaware. Following military service and four years at Wittenberg University in Ohio, he studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He received a doctorate in composition (DMA) from Stanford University in 1966, where he studied with Leland Smith. Chowning discovered the frequency modulation synthesis (FM) algorithm in 1967. This breakthrough in the synthesis of timbres allowed a very simple yet elegant way of creating and controlling time-varying spectra. In 1973 Stanford University licensed the FM synthesis patent to Yamaha in Japan, leading to the most successful synthesis engine in the history of electronic musical instruments. He taught computer sound synthesis and composition at Stanford University's Department of Music. In 1974, with John Grey, James (Andy) Moorer, Loren Rush and Leland Smith, he founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), which remains one of the leading centres for computer music and related research. Although he retired in 1996, he has remained in contact with CCRMA activities.Chowning was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and awarded the Honorary Doctor of Music by Wittenberg University in 1990. The French Ministre de la Culture awarded him the Diplôme d'Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1995. He was given the Doctorat Honoris Causa in 2002 by the Université de la Méditerranée, by Queen's University in 2010, Hamburg University in 2016, and Laureate of the Giga-Hertz-Award in 2013.Dave Bristow BiogDave was born in London and worked as a professional keyboard player recording and touring internationally with a variety of artists including Polyphony, Slender Loris, June Tabor, Tallis and 2nd Vision. Active in synthesizer development, he played a central role in voicing the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and is internationally recognized as one of the important contributors to the development and voicing of FM synthesis, co-authoring a textbook on the subject with Dr John Chowning. He spent three years at IRCAM in Paris, running a MIDI and synthesis studio working with contemporary music composers and artists, then moving to the United States in the 1990's to work for Emu Systems, Inc. on sampling and filter-based synthesizers. In 2002, he began working again with Yamaha developing ringtones and system alert sounds for the SMAF audio chip series used in cell phones and mobile devices. He has been an instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching electronic music production and synthesis for ten years, but still finds plenty of time for composing and playing piano with RedShift jazz quartet and developing his interest in computer arts.Gary Leuenberger BiogGary started in music at a young age and, in 1975, founded G. Leuenberger & Co. in San Francisco. It soon became one of the world's largest retailers of pianos, synthesizers and electronic keyboards. In 1980 he started working with Yamaha as part of their product development team. It was through this that he was recruited, along with the likes of Dave Bristow and Don Lewis, to create the factory presets for the DX7. Gary's most famous, or infamous, patch was the legendary E.Piano 1 which became equally one of the most popular and despised sounds ever! Nevertheless, his association with Yamaha continued until 2000, at which point Gary went back into education, gaining his Bachelors of Music and Masters in Classical Piano Performance from San Francisco State University in 2007.Since then, he has taught electronic music at SFSU and gives private tutoring to budding musicians of all ages. Manny Fernandez BiogDr. Manny Fernandez has been involved in synthesizer programming and development with many manufacturers for over 35 years. Initially self-taught prior to traditional university study of analogue synthesis, in the late 1970's - early 1980's the emerging digital synthesis techniques caught his attention with their expanded timbral possibilities. He acquired a DX7 in the fall of 1983 and using Dr. Chowning's original academic articles as a guide began exploring FM synthesis in depth. In 1987 he began his relationship with Yamaha, programming for a wide range of their synthesizers through the years to the current Montage M. Acknowledged as one of the world's foremost FM synthesists and having extensive experience with physical modelling synthesis as well, his programming approach is to create unique and dynamic timbres with interesting yet useful real-time controller implementations.Rob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for Sound On Sound, his website Failed Muso, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. He also works alongside a number of manufacturers, demonstrating their products and lecturing at various educational and vocational establishments about music technology.www.failedmuso.comTwitter: @failedmusoInstagram: @failedmusoFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/failedmuso/

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Panel discussion on AI consciousness with Rob Long and Jeff Sebo, published by Aaron Bergman on September 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Intro Recent 80k guest and philosopher specializing in AI consciousness Rob Long (@rgb) recently participated in a panel discussion on his paper "Consciousness in Artificial Intelligence: Insights from the Science of Consciousness" (pdf) with co-authors Patrick Butlin, Yoshua Bengio, and Grace Lindsay and moderator Jeff Sebo (@jeffsebo). You can watch it on Youtube (below), watch/listen as a podcast on Spotify , or read the transcript below. Paper abstract Whether current or near-term AI systems could be conscious is a topic of scientific interest and increasing public concern. This report argues for, and exemplifies, a rigorous and empirically grounded approach to AI consciousness: assessing existing AI systems in detail, in light of our best-supported neuroscientific theories of consciousness. We survey several prominent scientific theories of consciousness, including recurrent processing theory, global workspace theory, higher-order theories, predictive processing, and attention schema theory. From these theories we derive "indicator properties" of consciousness, elucidated in computational terms that allow us to assess AI systems for these properties. We use these indicator properties to assess several recent AI systems, and we discuss how future systems might implement them. Our analysis suggests that no current AI systems are conscious, but also suggests that there are no obvious technical barriers to building AI systems which satisfy these indicators. Youtube description This event took place on Tuesday September 5, 2023 and was hosted by the NYU Mind, Ethics, and Policy Program. About the event This panel discussion featured four authors from the recently released and widely discussed AI consciousness report. However, as we grow up, these same psychological defenses can start to hurt rather than help us. This workshop will introduce you to the 20 most common Defense, or Psychological, Mechanisms. Do you take your feelings out on others? Do you justify an unacceptable feeling or behavior with logic? Or do you avoid reality by retreating to a safe place within your mind? By the end of 4 weeks, you will develop a greater self-awareness and learn effective coping skills. Dan Snow's History Hit hits the road to Belgium and the Waterloo Battlefield to see the soldier's bones found in an attic earlier this month. The Battle of Waterloo is often remembered for its great leaders; Napoleon, Wellington and Blücher. Or, for its sweeping strategic importance but what did the ordinary fighting men endure? We went to the Waterloo Battlefield to learn about the almost apocalyptic reality of the battle with thick quagmires of mud and the bodies of both soldiers and horses strewn about. French Historian Antoin Charpagne shares stories of the men on the ground, what they ate (or didn't), their relationships and how they suffered. The History Hit team then head to Universite de Liege Medical Institute to the morgue to see what bones from Prussian soldiers can tell us about the battle before finally heading on to the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences where Dan helps Dr Caroline Laforest unpack the British bones that have just arrived. With great thanks to Mathilde Daumas, Dr Bernard Wilkin and Waterloo Uncovered.Produced by Mariana Des forges and mixed by Joseph Knight. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and investigative reporter Inna Lazareva join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Former Supreme Court head Aharon Barak gave a series of television interviews over the weekend in which he stated unequivocably that he is worried about new Justice Minister Yariv Levin's proposed judicial reforms. What were some of Barak's statements? Three drivers employed by the Prime Minister's Office for roughly 30 years as part of the premier's motorcade were reportedly fired earlier this week, amid reports that Benjamin Netanyahu is clearing house of staff who served in the previous government. However, the drivers are set also to serve as prosecution witnesses in the ongoing trial against Netanyahu. Horovitz connects some dots. A team of Israeli archaeologists from the Universite of Haifa and the Hebrew University has discovered what it claims is the earliest evidence of silver being used as currency in the Levant, dating back more than 3,600 years. The analyzed silver hoards are found in strata that date to 500 years prior to previous estimates. Borschel-Dan gives some context. Finally, Lazereva shares some of the horrors she uncovered during her in-depth investigation into what many Ukrainian women who fled their homes for Israel face when they get here. Discussed articles include: Ex-top judge Barak: ‘Put me before a firing squad' if it'll stop move to tyranny 3 motorcade drivers fired by Netanyahu are witnesses in his corruption trial Netanyahu fires three veteran motorcade drivers who also ferried Bennett and Lapid Newly analyzed 3,600-year-old silver pieces are 1st currency in Levant, study shows Raped, abused, exploited: Ukrainian women seeking refuge in Israel find no haven Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
