The king of DEVOlution is back on Dystopia Tonight with John Poveromo! Jerry Casale, one of the founding members of the iconic new wave band Devo, returns for a lively and thought-provoking discussion. Jerry is a musician, artist, and filmmaker who has been a driving force in the world of music for over four decades. He co-founded Devo in the early 1970s with his bandmates Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Lewis, and the band quickly became known for their unique blend of punk rock, new wave, and electronic music. Devo's satirical lyrics and inventive visuals helped to define the post-punk era, and they remain an influential force in music to this day. In addition to his work with Devo, Jerry Casale has also had a successful solo career, releasing albums such as "Everybody's Kissing Everyone" and "Late Late Late Night" and his newest album "The Invisible Man." He has also directed music videos for a number of artists, including Rush and Soundgarden. What sets Jerry Casale apart is his unique point of view. He has always been interested in exploring the darker side of human nature, and his art reflects this fascination. He has often been compared to filmmakers like David Lynch and artists like Francis Bacon, and his work is known for its surreal and often disturbing imagery. On this episode, Jerry and I discussed a range of topics, from the state of the music industry to the current political climate. He also talked about his own experiences as an artist and shared some insights into the creative process. As always Jerry continues to be a driving force for good, and always comes to the show with fascinating and engaging conversation. Fans of Devo and anyone interested in a truly unique point of view will enjoy this thought-provoking interview.

We've finally reached Friday, and Russia's war on the innocent people in Ukraine is in its third week. I don't want to watch the atrocities, but I can't turn away as I'm concerned about the people who are being murdered by the world's smallest madman. As you know, I have a friend in Ukraine. We've been communicating via the Telegram app. Today, she sent me a horribly disturbing message. She wrote "Today I received a call to the Friends forever hostel phone number. The man asks are you alive? I say yes. The answer is, I hope you all die very soon!" How can people be so cruel. My inner Momma Bear pounced. Tatiana sent me a screenshot of her phone, where this caller's phone number was clearly displayed. It was a NYC number: 929 841 4806. I'll explain what happened next at the start of the show... Then, we'll check in with Dietmar Pichler, an Austrian who frequently visits Ukraine, and know the history of the country very well. He's been working overtime, debunking the disinformation being spread by Putin, trying to get the world to listen to the truth. And finally, because it's Friday and we all need to take some time for self care this weekend, I thought I'd bring on a guy who can make us laugh. John Poveromo is a comedian and host of the podcast Dystopia Tonight. We'll see if he can actually make us laugh in the face of the immense tragedy we're watching in real time. Game on.

John Poveromo is a New Jersey based comedian who uses his personal angst as tool to create great stand-up comedy. We talked about how he built his act and learned on the road. We also talked about his lifelong struggle with depression. John wrote and stars in a short film which shows how his depression has affected him and has a hopeful ending. That film is called Duppet and is worth a watch. John & I also talked about one of his sets which I consider to be a great "Comedy 101" teaching set with it's structure. You can see that set here:John at DC ImprovI also got to talk to Mark Dreskin who is host of the podcast What 2 Watch Live. Mark is at the beginning of an already great podcast that takes a genre and explores all the TV and Film Mark can fit into the show. I really enjoy the format and Mark is a great host. John Poveromo is a comedian on ‘the circuit’, appearing tonight (Thursday, July 25 as I type this) at The Pit in Chapel Hill. John’s publicist somehow found the Triangle Talk Show and ‘booked’ John here, even after I explained that we have practically no audience, and John still agreed to appear. We had (I think) a great conversation. I guess you’ll be the judge of that.Links:John’s web site: http://johnpoveromo.net/The Pit: https://thepit-chapelhill.com/The Gerry Todd Show “VJ” Parody from SCTV: https://youtu.be/VD80QHZputQ?t=51This episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VMb80I81eREThe TTS web site is: http://TriangleTalkShow.com
We sat down with Comedian and Writer John Poveromo, whose keen observations and self-deprecating humor make him a comedy club favorite. We talked to John about being a kid from Brooklyn, who moved to New Jersey and found his passion for drawing cartoons and then stand-up comedy, moving to Los Angeles and then back to New Jersey. He enjoys the art of writing a joke and having it morph into a bit, which led him into writing assignments for various cable shows such as ESPN Sports Nation, CNN and VH-1. John also published a book of some of his drawings, which is extremely impressive. Charming, quick-witted and full of energy, we enjoyed having him on and you will enjoy him too.
