Forty years after the release of their classic concert film “Stop Making Sense,” the movie and the band are back on the big stage—same as it ever was, or maybe even better. A remastered, 4k version of the movie was released in September, and the band is back on tour burning down the house. On this episode, host Jon Small revisits his interview with the band's co-founder and drummer, Chris Frantz, who wrote a memoir about his once-in-a lifetime experience with the band in 2020. Frantz didn't have the nicest things to say about the band's lead singer David Byrne, but apparently they're back on talking terms — and that's great news because they're one of the best bands of the 1980s.

On December 11, 1978, six armed robbers broke into JFK Airport's Lufthansa Airlines cargo terminal at 3 o'clock in the morning. A little over an hour later, they walked out with $5 million in untraceable bills (worth $22.4 million today ) and $800,000 in jewels (worth $3.6 million today.) At the time, it was the largest heist in U.S. history. And here's the really crazy part: Not a shot was fired and nobody was killed or seriously hurt (during the heist, at least.) If this sounds familiar, it's because it was dramatized in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film 'Goodfellas,' based on Nicholas Pilleggi's 1985 book 'Wiseguys' about mid-level crooks in the Lucchese crime family. The Lufthansa heist was a pivotal moment in the lives of a Queens, NY-based crew. Mobsters Henry Hill, Jimmy Burke and a bizarre group of degenerate gamblers, bookies, wig salesmen and guys with nicknames like Louis Roast Beef all somehow pulled off this incredible scheme...and then almost immediately start killing each other. On this episode of Dirty Money, hosts Dan Bova and Jon Small discuss the crime and its fallout, and what the Goodfellas version got right and what it got wrong. Sometimes the best part of a big meal is the leftovers. There's nothing like taking a little bit of everything from the night before, heating it up, and settling in for a second round. And, for the second year in a row, just in time for the holidays, that's what we're doing here at Glass Houses.      This is our second Odds and Ends episode, where we take pieces of conversations from the year that got left on the cutting room floor. We hear so many great stories from the people we interview that we can't fit them all into each episode.      This year, we've got two dishes of second helpings. The first is from our interview with Steve Cohen, Billy's longtime lighting director, and Jon Small, who's been involved with Billy since the late 60s. They'll share stories of how they began working with Billy, including some never-before-heard stories from their youth.      Next is a sneak peek of our upcoming episode about The Nylon Curtain. Here, engineer Bradshaw Leigh talks about reconstructing the album for an ATMOS enhanced audio mix this year. He also gives a few behind-the-scenes stories from his time at A&R Recording with Billy and Phil Ramone. And, you'll hear his thoughts on the music business back then and what it's like now.      So throw on your sweatpants, uncork that half-empty bottle of wine, and settle in for a helping of odds and ends from some of our favorite interviews of 2022.      ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

Filmed over two nights in June 1990, Live at Yankee Stadium was a hit on VHS and on cable TV upon its release later that year. But, it's been overlooked in the decades after, with only a handful of songs available and a production style that quickly felt dated.     But, that's all changed with a deluxe release in the fall of 2022. Fans got to see a newly-edited version of the film in theaters, complete with footage of an unreleased song. That new cut is now available on Blu-ray with a 2CD set featuring those tracks plus 11 never-before-heard performances from the historic two night stand. The full, 22-song live album is also out as a 3LP vinyl set.      Over the summer, we spoke with director Jon Small and producer Steve Cohen about the making of the original film and the story behind its reimagining. Now, we're getting the full picture with the official, updated release.      In this episode, we'll recount our unboxing of the Blu-ray + 2CD package and vinyl edition. Then, we'll share our comments and observations on each song in the 22-track set.      Join us as we dig deep into the remixed, remastered, and expanded version of Billy Joel: Live At Yankee Stadium.   CHECK OUT OUR VIDEO UNBOXING OF BOTH SETS CHECK OUT OUR INTERVIEW WITH STEVE COHEN & JON SMALL   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

This fall, an often-overlooked live Billy Joel release is getting a second lease on life.    The 1990 video release Live At Yankee Stadium is getting a makeover with remixed and remastered sound, an extra song, and a brand new edit. And, after a limited run in theaters, it'll be available on Blu-ray along with a 2-CD or 3-LP release featuring 11 never before released performances.    While the Yankee Stadium home video was a hit after its release, it's been largely overlooked in the decades after that. It came on the heels of the definitive Live From Long Island in 1982 and the historically seismic Russia shows in 1987.    Those live releases featured mostly members of Billy's longtime core band. Later, 2006's 12 Gardens Live and Live At Shea Stadium, released in 2011, spotlighted a lineup that's gone largely unchanged since then.    By contrast, Live at Yankee Stadium features a transitional lineup. And, it didn't help that the fast cuts and frenetic camera angles locked it squarely as an early-90s MTV relic.    But that's changing with this new release. The longer cuts and enhanced sound give the entire production a more organic and immersive feel. And, the accompanying audio discs reveal even more of Billy's two-night stand.    To learn more about the new release, we spoke with Steve Cohen, Billy's longtime lighting director and producer of the re-released film. And with director and original producer Jon Small, who's worked with Billy since the late 60s and has either directed or collaborated on virtually every Billy Joel concert film or music video.    They gave us an amazing behind-the-scenes look at the making of the original film, the inspiration for its reimagining, and the process of bringing it back to life.    Join us as we dig deep into the original Live At Yankee Stadium and the story behind its new look and sound.    www.billyjoel.film   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com     Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor

Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

On this week's episode, it feels like Steve and Remfry have very little to say about the album Atilla by Atilla, so they go off on all manner of tangents instead. You'll enjoy that, we're sure. Anyway, the Attila we're talking about this week are not the rap-metalcore band that you probably know and begrudgingly tolerate, no, rather they are the proto-metal duo of Jon Small and Billy Joel. Yes, THAT Billy Joel. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1970 with Epic records signing the band and giving them fifty grand to record the scrappy compositions that they had pieced together. The result is an album that sounds a little bit like The Doors falling down the stairs, with a sleeve that might make you laugh, cry, vomit and bleed from the eyes all at once. And, frankly, the cover of the record is definitely the worst thing about this pretty ho-hum collection of songs, but it's here because of one particularly harsh review it received and because Billy Joel hates it, and he went on to become… well… Billy Joel. Could be worse eh.

Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Purportedly, he said this after his lesser-known E = mc4 debacle. I made the last part up but the point is: We all make mistakes, and that's not such a bad thing. But knowing what blunders to avoid can give you a head start in improving your writing. Author and writing coach Melissa Clark joins host Jon Small to detail the most common errors writers make. They speak from decades of experience writing, editing, and screwing up. Topics include such classics as telling not showing, overly creative dialogue tags, waiting for inspiration to hit, writer's imposter syndrome, and gingerly using really annoying adverbs.

1969 to 1970 was an odd time in the career of piano-based soft rock crooner Billy Joel. After the breakup of his first band, the psychedelic outfit the Hassles, Joel and fellow Hassles drummer Jon Small would team up to form Attila, who were an oddity of a band at the time, for their unconventional lineup. The band consisted of Small on drums, and Joel on vocals and organ, which was run through a variety of pedals and effects generators, and ultimately produce a bizarre hybrid of psychedelic, acid, noise, and hard rock, even with elements of doom metal beneath.Critics didn't see things the same way however, and the band was soundly mocked for the perceived ridiculousness of their sound, for the bizarre barbarian aesthetic they presented themselves in, and for having a needlessly gruesome debut album cover. But hang on a second...We've been down this road before, haven't we?To celebrate the 50th episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz & Patrick present their first ever "Revenge!" episode, returning once again to Attila's debut record (The first album they ever reviewed on the podcast) to see if it sounds any better so many years later.#JonSmallDidNothingWrong#EatYourFish#JuniorMints

The Outer Limits of Inner Truth had the great pleasure of interviewing Fred Schruers who wrote the definitive autobiography about legendary musician Billy Joel. During our interview with Schruers, we ask several questions about what makes Mr. Joel incredible and why his music will forever stand the test of time. We would love to eventually interview Mr. Joel. NOTE: This particular program is not metaphysical nor does it have a spiritual focus as many of our previous episodes. In Billy Joel, acclaimed music journalist Fred Schruers draws upon more than one hundred hours of exclusive interviews with Joel to present an unprecedented look at the life, career, and legacy of the pint-sized kid from Long Island who became a rock icon. Exhibiting unparalleled intimate knowledge, Schruers chronicles Joel's rise to the top of the charts, from his working-class origins in Levittown and early days spent in boxing rings and sweaty clubs to his monumental success in the seventies and eighties. He also explores Joel's creative transformation in the nineties, his dream performance with Paul McCartney at Shea Stadium in 2008, and beyond. Comprehensive, vibrantly written, and filled with Joel's memories and reflections—as well as those of the family, friends, and band members who have formed his inner circle, including Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray Joel, Jon Small, and Steve Cohen—this is the definitive account of a beloved rock star's epic American journey.
