Hva betyr det egentlig å være mindful? Og har det egentlig noe for seg? Jon Vøllestad, som til daglig er psykolog ved Solli distriktspsykiatriske senter i Bergen, har skrevet en artikkel om den oppsamlede kunnskapen om mindfulness-baserte tilnærminger innenfor klinisk psykologi. Artikkelen ble publisert i «narrativ review», i Scandinavian Psychologist i februar 2018.Til psykologisk.no sier Vøllestad at mindfulness dreier seg om at man får et mer bevisst forhold til egne opplevelser og et mer fleksibelt forhold til tanker og følelser. Det er med andre ord det mest vesentlig man tilstreber å oppnå i psykoterapi og selvutvikling. Mindfulness, eller oppmerksomt nærvær, har sin opprinnelse i buddhistisk filosofi. Frikoblet fra religionen er det blitt en metode som vesten har omfavnet. Mindfulness innebærer å aktivt regulere oppmerksomheten mot noe som skjer i øyeblikket. Det kan være å fokusere på noe så spesifikt som sin egen pust, eller det kan være å bli til stede i omgivelsene. I tillegg er det essensielt at oppmerksomheten skal være observerende og ikke-dømmende.– Mindfulness bygger i utgangspunktet på noe grunnleggende menneskelig: å være oppmerksom på det som skjer her og nå både i oss og omkring oss. Den andre hovedkomponenten er å ha en holdning av aksept eller vennlighet til det vi erfarer.Ved psykiske lidelser så ser man at begge deler er et problem. Ved psykiske plager er vår oppmerksomhet ofte på ville veier eller fanget i destruktive tankebaner og perspektiver man ikke klarer å unnslippe. Det er som om man ikke har herredømme over egen oppmerksomhet, og når oppmerksomheten da henger seg fast i negative tanke-spiraler, som generer et vell av negative følelser, er man fanget, og lidelsen er egentlig at oppmerksomheten vår er beslaglagt av et ubehagelig fokus.I tillegg ser man at mange med psykiske utfordringer bebor en rekke negative «indre stemmer» som agerer kritisk, nesten uansett hva man gjør. Det er mange som går rundt med svært negative holdninger ovenfor seg selv, og det er nesten som om man lever i en trakasserende situasjon eller en mobbe-situasjon hele tiden. Men i dette tilfellet er det ikke han skumle fyren i niende klasse som mobber, men oss selv som mobber oss selv(!) Det å innta en ikke-dømmende holdning (eller la oss si: ikke mobbete holdning) ovenfor det som oppstår i vår bevissthet, er en treningssak, og de som mestrer denne teknikken, har et verdifullt verktøy for selvutvikling. Hvis man sliter med angst eller depresjon, blir ofte oppmerksomheten rammet av en snevert fokus på farer, selvkritikk og andre dystre perspektiver. Du blir fanget i grubletanker om fortiden eller bekymrer deg mye for framtiden, og det gjør det vanskeligere å være til stede her og nå.– Det å øve opp en vennlighet, og en kvalitet av romslighet og omsorg for en selv, er en fin motgift mot selvkritikk. Mange av oss kan kjenne på at vi har strenge krav, vi kan være perfeksjonistiske. De som strever med psykiske lidelser, har ofte enormt sterke, dømmende indre stemmer.Målet med mindfulness er blant annet at man skal bli i bedre i stand til å møte tanker og følelser, uten å nødvendigvis la seg rive med.– En god del forskning tyder på at det å trene opp evnen til ikke-dømmende oppmerksomhet i møte med følelser og opplevelser, er gunstig på tvers av lidelser.
