Payments no longer stop at national borders, and neither does Nieuwe Knikkers ("New Marbles"). In this special international episode, we dive into the evolving landscape of payments in Europe. A few years ago, the call for a more European-focused payment infrastructure led to the emergence of initiatives like the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and the Digital Euro. These projects aim to create payment solutions in Europe, by Europe. Significant progress has been made, and now, more than ever, the timing seems right for these European solutions to gain traction. The importance of this topic was underscored at the Dutch Payments Association's Annual Conference, which focused entirely on European payments. Key players, including representatives from EPI, the Dutch National Bank, the SEPA scheme, and European policymakers, joined forces to discuss the future. But it wasn't just about industry experts—perspectives from merchants and consumers also took center stage, with contributions from EuroCommerce and the Dutch Consumer Association. At Nieuwe Knikkers, we firmly believe that end-user adoption is critical to the success of any new payment solution. That's why we invited Atze Faas, Payments Adviser at EuroCommerce, and Olof King, a board member at BEUC - The European Consumer Organization and a representative of the Dutch Consumer Association, to share their insights. Together, we explore the challenges posed by the dominance of card schemes and U.S. big tech companies in Europe. Atze and Olof express their concerns about this dependency and highlight the need for a more autonomous and inclusive European payment ecosystem. Key factors for success, they argue, include broad accessibility, competitive pricing, and a strong narrative that resonates with end users. A well-designed collaborative business model could be the foundation for these new payment methods to thrive. With these considerations in mind, our guests see great potential in the latest payment initiatives. Could this be the start of a new era for payments in Europe? This episode is brought to you in collaboration with the Dutch Payments Association and made possible by Endava, experts in software engineering for the digital age. Imagine being uprooted from everything you know, leaving behind your home and stepping into a world where the odds seem stacked against you. This is a reality for many refugees, stepping out of their homeland in search for a better life.   The journey is not an easy one, and can be more difficult when we have a vision in mind of what a fresh start will look like, but we're hit with a harsh reality check.   This was the experience for Vung Mang, a Burmese refugee who came to the US with nothing but determination.   How do we overcome situations where there seems to be no way out especially in a new and foreign place? How does this help us to improve mental toughness and drive?   In this episode, real estate broker, top 1% real estate agent in the Grand Rapids and Burmese refugee, Vung Mang shares his story of moving to the USA, how he overcame the challenges as a refugee and he's now helping people like himself not just survive but thrive in their new homeland.   I felt like I had to help people out, and that way I also got more connections and networking. -Vung Mang   Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode    -Pivot to find success When things don't go according to our expectations, how do we look for success and opportunities elsewhere?   -Networking and mentorship There are a lot more mentors today that are willing to help than there were in the past. How can we take advantage of that?   -A different world  What's the difference between real estate in Burma and the USA?   Guest Bio Born and raised in the small town of Kalay, Myanmar — formerly called Burma — Vung Mang weathered numerous challenges in life, but it didn't stop him from finding success. He immigrated to the United States as a refugee from a communist country, and despite trying a variety of jobs before and after he resettled in the U.S., he finally found his purpose in real estate by helping other people succeed in their goals as well. “Between learning survival skills in Myanmar and having to overcome all odds, I am appreciative of what I have and of every opportunity that life offers me here,” Vung said. While Vung still lived in Myanmar, he studied English and computer networking. He then became a computer salesperson before finding work as an insurance agent for three years. In 2008, Vung relocated to Michigan and became a case aid and translator at Bethany Christian Services. He met many people in the Burmese and Nepali communities as a result of his job where he assisted families as they settled into their new lives in America.   Due to his expanding network and his growing knowledge of the area, Vung was inspired to enter real estate. He began working at Five Star Real Estate in November of 2013 as a part-time agent while still aiding people through Bethany Christian Services, but three years later, Vung realized that his career in real estate could carry him into a brighter future than what he could have ever imagined.  “When I went full-time as an agent five years ago, it changed my whole life,” Vung recalled. “I have tried all sorts of investments, and I found that real estate sales and investments are the best.” Now an agent for over nine years, Vung has thrived in the industry. He sold 79 houses in 2022 and obtained over $24 million volume in sales, which contributed to his overall career volume of $94 million. For the past two years, he has been the #1 most-selling agent at Five Star Real Estate, and in 2022, he was ranked #35 out of over 3,000 agents in all of Grand Rapids. Vung also owns nine rentals — which contain 13 units — as well as his primary residence. One day, he hopes to possibly own a large apartment complex or commercial property. One day, Vung hopes to possibly own a large apartment complex or commercial property. Despite Vung's impressive achievements, he defines success as “helping people achieve their goals.” He is passionate about assisting past and current clients gain financial success through investment-property ownership, but most of all, he wants clients to remember him as a “fantastic agent who went above and beyond” and as someone who ensured that all of their transactions were completed on time. From his humble beginning in Myanmar to only having $20 in his name when he moved to Michigan 14 years ago, Vung has worked incredibly hard to become a top-producing agent and hopes that he can inspire others to go after their dreams, too. https://www.kateisler.com/ Kate Isler's incredible story demonstrates how women can stop self-selecting out of opportunities and take the leap of faith to accomplish their dreams. Kate Isler navigated the male-dominated culture of the technology industry, breaking new global markets for Microsoft in their fast-paced, hyper-growth startup years in some of the most challenging regions in the world – all without a college degree or resources that many believe are necessary for success. Kate's story is a fascinating adventure from her years as a naïve young adult through her unexpected global career at a time when corporations weren't hiring women to represent their companies overseas. In Breaking Borders, Kate candidly shares: Her moments of success, failure, and very public mistakes. The struggle she faced to pivot her career in a completely new direction. How she overcame the disappointment of a failed startup by channeling her passion for supporting women. Her mission to inspire other women by building Be Bold, a women's advocacy non-profit, from the ground up. Kate's story is a guide for women who want to stop self-selecting out of opportunities because they "assume" they don't have the right education, connections, or skills to take a chance.

Kate Isler is back on Women Worldwide and this time she’s written a book! In case you missed her first episode and aren’t sure who Kate is, here’s a quick rundown. Kate is an activist, wife, author, mother, partner, friend, businessperson, sister, and risk-taker who never had any intention of being an entrepreneur, but life had other plans.  The last time we spoke with Kate she was launching Be Bold Now and since then has shifted and pivoted into speaking and authorship. She’s also launched TheWMarketplace with a partner and in general, has stepped fully into entrepreneurship.  She never had any intention of becoming an author. Writing a book was never a bucket list item for her, but after spending 20 years with Microsoft and seeing how her experiences shaped her, she knew she needed to share her knowledge with other women.  Breaking Borders is an ode to her years in the start-up space and realizing that the one thing she didn’t do was allow others to diminish her presence. Listen as she shares where the last year and a half have taken her and why she has felt called to further empower women in their own success. Show Notes: [01:29] How much of your energy and momentum is helping you defy expectations?  [03:27] Kate Isler is back to chat about her most recent book and career pivot.  [05:25] Why and how she decided to write this book. [06:34] What did her support system look like as she began writing?  [08:57] Kate shares one of her favorite passages in her book and why it still hits home. [11:58] Why do we ignore our instincts?  [14:40] Has she had any AHA moments as an entrepreneur?  [18:31] How does she stay focused with everything else going on?  [20:23] Does working out help her combat stress?  [21:34] Has Covid affected their launch and partnership?  [24:06] Why they build in personal interaction time before each Zoom meeting.  [25:36] Kate shares some tips for you to start breaking borders.  [27:34] Connect with Kate. We are joined by 17 year old mastermind Eemil Lajoma who supplies growls & riffs to old school death metal worshippers, Cryptic Hatred. In this wholesome conversation, we discuss Finland vs US (in which we discover Schuler knows more about Finland than most people in Finland) in terms of music, horror, and of course, COVID 19. We debate who the essential Finnish metal band is, discuss classic 90's era influences & obscure cuts in the genre that keeps on giving, all while Eemil reminds us that the kids today are alright. Kate Isler began her career at Microsoft at its beginning, ready to respond to the energetic, nuanced business environment of a rapidly growing tech company. Her independence and can-do attitude led her to both early success and recoverable failure, further fueling her drive to succeed. Kate's career allowed her to travel extensively through the Middle East, exposing her to a range of cultural and professional challenges as she navigated post-Gulf War Dubai as a woman in a male-dominated industry. For Kate, these were opportunities to grow herself and the company at large. In this inaugural episode, Kate tells Liz when she realized what her Third Act would be and how her inspiration for it stemmed from the power of celebrating International Women's Day while working in Europe. Upon her return to the US, Kate quickly launched her own celebration, tying it to the need to advance gender parity. Launching the event sparked her passion to drive gender parity through a more coordinated effort, launching her startup Be Bold Now and her women's ecommerce site, The WMarketplace. Timothy Waters, Professor of Law and Val Nolan Faculty Fellow at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and Associate Director of the Center for Constitutional Democracy, argues for a radical rethink of the opposition to secession asking in his book Boxing Pandora if secession is dangerous, or a pathway to stability?
