Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show to break down how injuries to the roster will affect the Astros chances to make the postseason, as well as how the organization will position themselves with the trade deadline approaching. General manager Dana Brown announced Wednesday that starting pitchers Cristian Javier and José Urquidy are both scheduled to have right elbow surgery and will be out for the rest of this season and part of next season. This is another blow to an already damaged rotation. "There is no depth," McTaggart said. "Their roster is a little thin," and "the Triple-A talent is not the greatest." According to McTaggart, Luis Garcia is expected to return "after the All-Star break," and Lance McCullers will be "five weeks behind Garcia." The MLB trade deadline falls on July 30, and McTaggart predicts the Astros "will be buyers" in the first baseman and starting pitching market. "Neither [Jon] Singleton nor [Jose] Abreu have been very good defensively," so "the longer you don't address first base...it's only going to get harder."
Matt Thomas and Ross Villarreal of The Matt Thomas Show review the Houston Astros losing 4-2 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. Catcher Yainer Diaz homered in his third straight game, and even though they could not complete the sweep, the Astros won the series 2-1 before heading on the road to take on the Los Angeles Angels for a weekend series starting Friday. Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins to discuss how will starting pitching will move forward with Cristian Javier and José Urquidy out for the rest of the season. Matt and Ross read "Mean Tweets" with Chris Gordy about Oklahoma softball, preview the NBA Finals, tell people "Shut Yo Bum Ass Up, Ain't Nobody Got Time" and more.

Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Astros On-Deck Show following the third straight loss on the road against the Seattle Mariners with the latest defeat ending in a 2-1 final in the 10th inning on Wednesday. Justin Verlander started on the mound, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine in over seven innings. Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown have also given the Astros quality starts in this series, but the offense has not been productive. There are "a lot of holes in this lineup," McTaggart said. The Astros have missed Yordan Álvarez's power-hitting in this recent stretch, and McTaggart says Álvarez has lost some discipline at the plate. "He's chasing a little bit more" and "expanding his zone." McTaggart also previews the Astros looking to avoid the series sweep with Spencer Arrighetti on the mound Thursday, discusses Jose Abreu's place in the lineup and gives the latest update on injured starting pitchers José Urquidy and Cristian Javier.

Matt Thomas and Ross Villarreal of The Matt Thomas Show recap the Houston Rockets defeating the Washington Wizards 135-119 Thursday at the Toyota Center. The Rockets improve to four straight victories and will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. During Friday's minor league start, Astros pitcher José Urquidy pulled himself off the mound after suffering pain in this throwing elbow. The Astros might look to add another pitcher to the roster with ace Justin Verlander set to start the season on the injured list. Framber Valdez will be the starter on Opening Day for the third straight season. Cougars men's basketball is set to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the next round of the Big 12 Championship Tournament. Brian McTaggart, Astros beat reporter for MLB.com, joins The Matt Thomas Show from CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches to talk about the Houston Astros ahead of their spring training matchup against the Washington Nationals. Pitcher Justin Verlander reported to spring training with right shoulder issues and will be placed on the injury list to start the season. However, McTaggart is optimistic about Verlander's progress in spring training. Verlander is "throwing his bullpens without any incidents." As the Astros approach Opening Day, McTaggart expects players such as Grae Kessinger, Jon Singleton and others to make the roster. "The club is looking pretty set right now," McTaggart said. The Astros traded minor league right-hander Carlos Mateo to the Kansas City Royals for Dylan Coleman last December, but McTaggart hasn't been impressed with the prospect's performances in spring training. Coleman "probably hasn't pitched as well as they would've liked." First baseman José Abreu has been recovering from right knee soreness but could return to Grapefruit League action soon. "I would expect him to bounce back." McTaggart also comments on pitcher José Urquidy, who performed well against the Nationals on Saturday. "I wouldn't expect him to be an ace," but "he's pitched really well this spring."

2023 ALCS - Games 3, 4, and 5 @ Globe Life Field Astros (90-72) @ Rangers (90-72) - TEX leads 2-0 The Rangers went into Houston, dominated, and now they head back to Arlington up two games to none in this series. Montgomery and Eovaldi were outstanding, the bats came through in big moments, and the bullpen held on to shut the door. In all facets of the game they have outplayed their rival Astros, but don't assume that will continue with the change in venue. Heading into this series, the Astros were 6-1 this year at Globe Life Field, including the last five in a row. Houston's big bats have clobbered the Texas pitching staff in Arlington. All year Dusty Baker's guys have been road warriors, boasting a 51-30 record away from Minute Maid Park. They will need to continue that trend to stay alive in this series. Mad Max Scherzer returns from a triceps injury to start game 3 for the Rangers, with Christian Javier opposing him for Houston. It's been nearly a month since the future Hall-of-Famer has pitched competitively, so how much will Bruce Bochy get out of him? As for Javier, he's been nearly untouchable in the playoffs for his career. In game 4, Andrew Heaney and José Urquidy will start, but expect their managers to have very short leashes. If the Astros extend the series, game 5 will be a rematch of game 1, with Montgomery and Verlander facing off once again. With the AL Pennant on the line, these two instate rivals will deliver some of the best on-field drama of recent postseason memory. Miami Gardens hosted the 2021 game, following the 2020 pandemic-altered season. Attendance was limited to about 15,000 fans. The 2022 New York Yankees are going to close out a June with a record at least 35 games over .500. It's patently absurd, and Andrew & Kunj can't get enough of it. There was no way that the Astros series was going to be normal, right? The opener was three-run homer mayhem capped by Aaron Hicks' game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth and Aaron Judge's walk-off hit. Next came dominance from Houston pitching as Justin Verlander shoved on Friday, Cristian Javier and two relievers combined on the first no-hitter against the Yankees in 19 years, and José Urquidy flirted with a no-no in the finale, too. But Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and that Judge guy again came back to stun the Astros, splitting the series at two victories apiece. As a palate cleanser, the Yankees hosted the last-place A's for three and took care of business with three wins in a row, though a few weird innings made things interesting. Guest-starring in that A's series was the title character of our podcast episode, JP Sears, who filled in with 5.2 shutout innings. The Yankees' unofficial No. 6 starter has a 0.00 ERA. Again: Normal! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
