Her first feature Riot Girls just arrived on VOD in the US and Canada today, so filmmaker Jovanka Vuckovic is here to throw down for the scrappy splatterpunk brilliance of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1987 horror Western Near Dark. Your genial host Norm Wilner is more than happy to ride shotgun.
Jovanka Vuckovic is an award-winning filmmaker and writer. In the past two decades, she has worked as a visual effects artist, earning a Gemini Award, and cemented a reputation as a genre film authority—she was twice named one of the most important women in the history of horror, serving for a time as editor-in-chief of famed Rue Morgue Magazine. In 2016, she spread her wings into the US film market, joining the DGA after directing a segment of XX, the first-ever all-female horror film anthology from Magnolia Pictures, which had its premiere at Sundance 2017. Her debut Riot Girls, written by Katherine Collins, will see its release this year. The film tells the story of two young women who must save a young man from the clutches of a little psychopath on the wrong side of Potter’s Bluff — a town divided after a mysterious disease wiped out all the adults. The movie that Jovanka has chosen to discuss is a grossly underappreciated classic - 1981's Dead & Buried. Jovanka talks about how she named the small town of Potter's Bluff in Riot Girls after the Potter's Bluff of Dead & Buried. She even goes as far to say she envisions that both films exist in the exact same town. Jovanka also opens up about her intense fear of death and how that influences her films. And she and April discuss the struggles of getting a movie made as a female filmmaker. You can see Riot Girls in theaters and on demand on September 13th. And if you haven't seen Dead & Buried yet, you simply must! With April Wolfe and Jovanka Vuckovic. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters on Twitter or Facebook. Or email us at switchbladesisters@maximumfun.org. Produced by Casey O'Brien and Laura Swisher for MaximumFun.org.

Beyond the Cabin in the Woods latest episode: XX XX is an anthology horror film featuring stories about women directed by women. Your polterguides found it entertaining, if a bit frustrating here and there. We discuss Donna’s strong feelings about Jack Ketchum, Adrean’s strong feelings about selecting someone who doesn’t like horror to write and direct a horror story, Debbie’s approving feelings about the depiction of depression and Kenzi’s strong feelings about retelling Rosemary’s baby,Not to mention all our strong feelings about the surprisingly touching story of the little stop motion creepy doll.Give the movie a watch. It’s entertaining, even if we feel that “women” isn’t really a theme. Episode 027 of Berk Reviews Movie Club features the Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro directed film Delicatessen from 1991. Corey really enjoyed this movie on her previous viewings, but Jonathan had never seen it. Considering this podcast had already watched Jeunet's Alien: Resurrection and Amelie it made sense to check this one out as well. Delicatessen stars Marie-Laure Dougnac, Dominique Pinon, and Pascal Benezech. Next Week - Episode 028 - XX (2017) If you've listened to Top Five Movies over the last year, you've probably heard Corey discuss her affinity for anthology movies. XX (2017) has four female directors: Roxanne Benjamin; Karyn Kusama; St. Vincent (Annie Clark); and Jovanka Vuckovic. The film is comprised of four short horror films and is currently available to stream on Netflix. Looking to shine a spotlight on female filmmakers in the horror genre, XX brings together four talented ladies to direct their own killer short films, including Roxanna Benjamin, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), Jovanka Vuckovic, and Karyn Kusama.
They’re baaaack and ready to continue the conversation from episode 10. But first, Minki shares a blood orange beer adorned with an illustration of Jason Voorhees with Tracy and then Tracy shares a horror anthology graphic novel called Through the Woods, written and illustrated by Emily Carroll. After that, they both share their thoughts on the final two stories, which they believe are the “horror-iest” of the four stories from the female-led horror anthology, XX. We’ve got a demonic possession story set in the desert (Don’t Fall by Roxanne Benjamin) and a Rosemary’s Baby-type story (Her Only Living Son by Karen Kusama). Also, don’t touch Minki’s iPad.
I’ve said before that horror is supposed to upset the apple cart. It lets us confront fears we can’t confront in any other genre. I like when good stories challenge me, and that includes a challenge to my perspective. In the last decade or so I’ve noticed many films directed and/or written by women that have shown me horror stories from different perspectives. They’ve unsettled me, and scared me in ways different from before. I LIKE this. As a reader and watcher of horror, I LIKE having something unsettle me. In this episode I talk about how these different perspectives impacted me, and highlight some movies and artists who inspire me. If you like the show, please consider supporting it on Patreon. This week, Anton Patzner joins us to discuss the horror anthology film "XX" directed by 'four killer women' as the tagline suggests. For you St. Vincent fans, Annie Clark makes her directorial debut along with directors Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifers Body), Jovanka Vuckovic, & Roxanne Benjamin. We also chat about Green Room, Girls, Alien (look, I'd never seen it until a few days ago, ok??), Tales from the Crypt, and some beefy pie Laura made. Mick is joined by filmmakers Karyn Kusama & Jovanka Vuckovic for an in-depth discussion on women in horror and their latest movie, the female driven anthology, XX.
Following up on the conversation about Karen Kusama in the Women in Horror Month Special Episode, Minki and Tracy discuss the first two stories from the horror anthology, XX. Written, directed and produced by women, and starring only female leads, this set of horror shorts provide the hosts with material to incite a fun discussion, even if Tracy feels like it’s yet another collection of slightly unfinished, unfulfilling and not-quite-horror stories. It’s no Creepshow. Oh, yeah, and Tracy made it back from South Africa, so she’s alive and Minki still has a co-host. Join them for one more scare...until they’re back next week with a discussion of the final two stories from XX.

2/5/2015 This Wednesday we talked to Thomas Negovan, founder of the Century Guild Museum and Art Gallery, current representatives of Clive Barker's artwork. We talked about Fear This, the announcement of the optioning of Imajica as a one-season TV series by Josh Boone, the fantasticClive Barker: IMAGINER Paintings & Drawings books (funded through Kickstarter), part of an ongoing process of high-resolution archival and preservation of Clive Barker's extensive body of work and his current Kickstarter book project: Steve Diet Goedde 25-Year Retrospective, Volume III with 25 days to go. We discuss the news first as usual, and at about 18 minutes in, we were joined by Thomas via Skype. The conversation flowed in the podcast's typical conversational style to include some very interesting academic-level discussion of Clive's 3 painting periods. Fascinating stuff. People often don't know that I paint. Recently, though, with Thomas Negovan of Century Guildhaving taken hold of my work in a major way, and put out the first volume of the Imaginer book, people have begun to understand what I'm doing a lot more. Thomas has become my great apologist and has really made people understand what I'm doing in a way that I never could. I'm really not that great at talking about my own art. – Clive Barker, “Return of the Dark Master” by techgnotic, deviantART, 31 October 2014. The complete interview with Jason Lapeyre, the writer/director of Faceless, I Declare War and Cold Blooded.
What better to make you feel woefully insignificant in the universe than an episode of this size? Last weekend Desmond Reddick attended the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, and this week he has more than three hours of footage to share with you. There's several reviews of the films seen at the fest and interview with the likes of: Frank Woodward (director of award-winning documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown), Mars (composer of said documentary and the man behind Dead House Music), Jovanka Vuckovic (editor in chief of Rue Morgue Magazine), Toren Atkinson (from The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets), Sean Branney (from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society) and Andrew Migliore (festival runner and head of Lurker Films). There's also recorded footage of speeches, awards ceremonies and a panel on Lovecraft in Pop Culture. There's also tons of inane and profane chatter with fellow cultists and guest co-hosts DZ (from Cinema Diabolica) and Brother D (from Mail Order Zombie). On top of all that, there's music! "Weird Tales" by Dead House Music, "Main Theme from In Search of Lovecraft" by Troy Sterling Nies, "Lovecrafted" by Dead House Music, "Cultists on Board" and "Sleestack and Yeti" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, "Neither Dead nor Dreaming" by Troy Sterling Nies from The Call of Cthulhu and "The Innsmouth Look" by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. Sit back, oil up your tentacles, relax and enjoy this massive show. Contact me: feedback@dreadmedia.net, or 206.203.1213.
