Keating outed Russian offensive weapons directed towards the United States. Keating never gave up his source. The source's name was also deleted from secretly recorded Excom conversations. Excom was the Executive Committee that Kennedy organized to help him problem solve during the crisis. Sadly Robert Kennedy comes across as arrogant during the 13 days of meetings during the crisis. At one point, the stressed RFK concerned about his family wanted to go in & end the situation with Cuba by force. RFK was performing in a diplomatic manner through backdoor connections to Russia's Nikita Khrushchev Both McNamara & RFK were super loyal to JFK yet both flip flopped during this incredibly tense time. At other times, under pressure, the two men became hawkish. Initially it was agreed upon that the quarantine was the effective way to get in contact with Khrushchev. The longer the Cuban quarantine continued, the more likely it was that military intervention would be needed. Kennedy kept delaying matters, trying to fend the US war hawks off. Even if the Russians were to attack, the Generals were ordered not to fire back without JFK's permission. What do major corporations want? Is the government enabling corporations & their covert operations? Eisenhower gave the green light for the Lumbama assassination. Why did Eisenhower hate Kennedy so much? Eisenhower had plotted The Bay of Pigs Operation, which was a way to entrap Kennedy. The Bay of Pigs would fail unless there was no intervention of US military to help it along. Eisenhower were trying to figure out how to get rid of Castro & his government before Kennedy was elected. Eisenhower in has last year was suffering from heart troubles. Was he being manipulated before his death? Americans were dropping death charges to force the Russian subs to surface. When Russian submarines lost contact with Russia, one Russian Commander refused to launch any missiles. Gary reflects on the the history of CIA's William Harvey & how Kennedy exiled Harvey to Rome. Len notes that William Harvey is a person of interest in the JFK assassination. The Cubans & Russians were ordered to fire the missiles if the US attacked. Adlai Stevenson said from day one that he thought there was a diplomatic solution, blockade or quarantine. Stevenson told the Chief Admiral that he wasn't allowed to do anything without JFKs permission. Kennedy made great efforts to stall the military from a full on invasion of Cuba. Eisenhower is the one who really created the Bay of Pigs operation, not JFK. US intelligence reported that there were 10,000 troops in Cuba during the crisis, but there was 40,000! CIA Director John A. McCone was the 2nd person who went around discussing hidden missiles in Cuba. Kennedy first learned about the situation on October 15th. Why so late if reports were coming in during Sept.? When referring to his family, Kennedy had said "I'd rather have them Red, than dead." The Oscars countdown is coming to a close! On the fourteenth episode of All the Film Things, my friend and writer/ director Samy El- Kamel is back to discuss my favorite film of the year, the latest masterpiece by Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Oppenheimer, a film that many have considered Christopher Nolan's “magnum opus”, is an epic biographical drama film based on a true story following J. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Manhattan Project, from the making of the atomic bomb to the world he created after making the atomic bomb. While the description of the film makes it seem like a straight biopic, it is very much a Nolan film. This film is based on the book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. After collaborating on six films together over the past twenty years, this is the first time Nolan cast Murphy in a lead role. The film has an all- star cast, including in addition to Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Jason Clarke, and Rami Malek. Oppenheimer received the most nominations (with ten) at this year's upcoming Oscars, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning how many Oscars Oppenheimer will take home! Samy is one of my very favorite ATFT guests and this is his sixth appearance on the show. Samy and I are both massive Christopher Nolan fans… which I think the audience will very much pick up on. So much so that we both made sure to see Oppenheimer four times in theaters. There was no one else I could have recorded this episode with. Check out Samy's Youtube channel Barefoot Python Media to watch his videos including his ranking of Christopher Nolan's films, the future of physical media, and his director/ cinematographer reel. Click here to watch and subscribe to the Barefoot Python Media Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia/videos. We recorded this episode on January 21, 2024. Since I was editing the previous ATFT episode (on Killers of the Flower Moon), I couldn't analyze Oppenheimer as extensively as I had hoped and tend to do with Christopher Nolan films so I didn't talk about the film as much as I hoped but that is completely okay because the episode turned out incredible. In this episode, Samy shares additional facts behind the true story of Oppenheimer's life while also analyzing the man himself further. Since Oppenheimer is (only) three hours long, Christopher Nolan couldn't portray everything in the true story. Through Samy, I learned the subtle ways in which Christopher Nolan captures the true Oppenheimer.  We also discuss the trademark Nolan qualities in Oppenheimer such as parallel editing, non- linearity, and how both of those qualities come together to play with time. While the film is mostly analytical, the last section is more of a casual conversation surrounding Nolan, recent videos Samy created for Barefoot Python Media that are available on Youtube, and a little prank Samy pulled that had me laughing so hard.  The next episode will be the big Oscars special! Due to upcoming production assistant opportunities, this episode may not be released on February 28. Phones are convenient, powerful devices, but they sure do gobble up a lot of our attention. How much of your day do you spend just holding your phone, staring at the screen? Humane, a company started by a pair of ex-Apple employees, wants to squash the tyranny of the touchscreen. The company has developed a tiny device that magnetically pins to your clothing, where it can replicate a phone's core functions like answering calls, sending messages, and translating speech. It uses voice controls, touch controls, and a camera to sense the wearer's intentions, and it crafts answers using machine intelligence and displays them on your outstretched hand using a tiny projector. It's a weird and audacious device that Humane hopes will free its customers from having to carry their phones everywhere. In this episode of “The Ben & Marc Show”, a16z's co-founders Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen take on the biggest  and most important film of the year – Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster “Oppenheimer”. The film – based on the 2005 biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer'' by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin – chronicles the life of the American theoretical physicist, whose direction of the top secret Manhattan Project forever changed the course of world history. In this one-on-one conversation based on YOUR questions from Twitter, Marc and Ben examine the historical accuracies (and inaccuracies) of Nolan's epic work, explore in-depth the life of the enigmatic physicist himself, and tackle – from all angles – the social and philosophical aspects of communism, a theme that weighs heavily in the film, as Oppenheimer's association with party members led to his political downfall. We hope you enjoy this episode! Watch the video version here:  https://youtu.be/AwOFcxENsVk?si=vUF9ZO5Fcj9W0O49 Resources:Marc on X: https://twitter.com/pmarcaMarc's Substack: https://pmarca.substack.com/ Ben on X: https://twitter.com/bhorowitz NY Times: "The Problem With Everything-Bagel Liberalism" by Ezra Klein: 'https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/02/op... Books mentioned on this podcast (and others you'll want to check out):– “Red Decade” by Eugene Lyons https://amzn.to/3OEQMbZ– “When Reason Goes on Holiday: Philosophers in Politics” by Neven Sesardic https://amzn.to/455zYRv– "Witness" by Whittaker Chambers https://amzn.to/3OEu0RC– ”The Great Leap Forward" by Alexander J. Robert Oppenheimer" co-authored by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The conversation focuses on the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer's formation and struggles before, during and after the top-secret Manhattan Project. In 1943, Oppenheimer assembled the greatest scientific minds of the time in Los Alamos, New Mexico to create the first atomic bomb. The Manhattan Project achieved that goal with the successful detonation of the atomic bomb, known as the Trinity Test. That success would change the course of history and humanity for all time. On this episode of “Death in The Garden” we are joined by James Connolly, producer of the film series and dear friend, to discuss this recent “Barbenheimer” phenomenon to accompany the piece Maren wrote on the subject last week in her piece below:On this far reaching discussion, we discuss both films and what they represent to each of us, as well as what they both say about the broader culture. We really allowed ourselves to riff and let the conversation lead where it needed to, which allowed us to discuss the historical background of Oppenheimer that comes from American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. We discussed our differing points of view about the effectiveness of Oppenheimer. We talked at length about the social-justice fraudulence that is Barbie, and the importance of critical thinking. We talked about how humans are ideological, and how we have be constantly vigilant so as to not become dogmatic. We also discussed at length the Luddites, as well as the early 20th century scientists, psychologists, educators, and engineers that (under the pretense of rationalism and morality) precipitated the “chain reaction” that will most likely lead to the collapse of civilization. Editor - Jennifer Lame ACE, Additional Editor - Mike Fay, 1st Assistant Editor - Nick Ellsberg and 1st Assistant Film Editor - Tom Foligno The OPPENHEIMER editing team of Jennifer Lame ACE, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg and Tom Foligno applied their collective storytelling talents to film technology both old and new.  While Jennifer and Mike worked to shape and refine Christopher Nolan's story into an instant classic, Nick and Tom were tasked with mastering a hybrid film and digital workflow to make the most of Nolan's brilliant 70MM IMAX footage. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist and polymath J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story predominantly focuses on Oppenheimer's early studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing; juxtaposed with this are events surrounding Oppenheimer's relationship with Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who sees Oppenheimer as a rival. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss, with the remaining ensemble supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh. JENNIFER LAME, ACE While Jen claims that her "wheelhouse" in editorial is films that feature people talking in rooms, as her work on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) and MARRIAGE STORY (2019) both prove, you wouldn't know it by her standout work in bigger features like Christopher Nolan's TENET (2020) and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022). MIKE FAY As Jen Lame was wrapping up things on WAKANDA FOREVER, she entrusted the early assembly duties on OPPENHEIMER to Mike Fay.  Prior to OPPENHEIMER, Mike had been sharpening his skills as an assistant editor on LIFE OF PI (2012) and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) and as a VFX Editor on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) and BULLET TRAIN (2022). NICK ELLSBERG Nick and Mike Fay had more than a passing familiarity prior to OPPENHEIMER.  Like Mike, Nick worked on BULLET TRAIN (2022), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM as an assistant editor. TOM FOLIGNO A veteran of the Marty Scorsese film school, having worked as an assistant on CASINO (1995), BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999), GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) and THE AVIATOR (2004), Tom was able to return to his film editing roots and dust off his splicer for his role in the film cutting room on OPPENHEIMER.

In making “Oppenheimer,” which opens in theatres this weekend, the director Christopher Nolan relied on a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2005 biography of the father of the atomic bomb, “American Prometheus,” by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. Bird is credited as a writer of Nolan's movie, and he spoke with David Remnick about Oppenheimer's life story—in particular, about the ambivalence that the scientist felt, and expressed publicly, about the use of the bomb, which led to a McCarthyist show trial that destroyed his career and reputation. “He's very complicated and he's highly intelligent, so he's capable of understanding and holding in his head contradictory ideas,” Bird says. On the one hand, “He feared that if [the bomb] was not used, or the war ended without the use of this weapon, the next war was going to be fought by two nuclear-armed adversaries and it would be Armageddon.” On the other hand, after Hiroshima, Oppenheimer used his status as a celebrity scientist to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear warfare, a move that landed him in the crosshairs of federal officials. “What happened to him in 1954 sent a message to several generations of scientists, here in America but [also] abroad, that scientists should keep in their narrow lane. They shouldn't become public intellectuals. And if they dared to do this, they could be tarred and feathered,” Bird notes. “The same thing that happened to Oppenheimer in a sense happened to Tony Fauci.”

Once criticized as a “bossy girl,” Gerwig recalls, she tamped down her instinct to direct, focusing early in her career on acting and then screenwriting. She told David Remnick how she finally gave herself permission to be a filmmaker.

The project was announced in September 2021 after Universal Pictures won a bidding war for Nolan's screenplay. Murphy signed on to portray Oppenheimer in October, with others in the main cast joining between November 2021 and April 2022. Pre-production was underway by January 2022, with filming taking place from February to May. Oppenheimer was filmed in a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65mm large-format film—including, for the first time, sections in IMAX black-and-white analog photography. As with his previous works, Nolan utilised extensive practical effects and minimal computer-generated imagery. Oppenheimer premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on July 11, 2023, and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom and United States on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures. It is Nolan's first film not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures domestically or internationally since Memento (2000), as well as his first to receive an R rating since Insomnia (2002). The film received critical acclaim, with particular praise for Nolan's direction, its cast performances, screenplay, cinematography and visuals. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Sherwin. On the show, Chris Hedges discusses J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the bomb with author Kai Bird. J. Robert Oppenheimer, “the father of the atomic bomb,” was by the end of World War II one of the most celebrated men in America. He was instrumental, as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists, in the massive government effort to build the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But in the post-war anti-communist hysteria he was declared a security risk because of his warnings about the use of atomic weapons and his opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb as well as the Air Force's plans for massive strategic bombing with nuclear weapons – plans he condemned as genocidal. He was hauled before Red-baiting congressional investigative committees, the FBI tapped his home and office phones and put him under surveillance. Scurrilous stories about his political past were planted in the press and he was put on trial, becoming America's most prominent victim of the post-war anti-communist witch hunts. Oppenheimer was a central figure in the greatest struggles and triumphs faced by the United States in war, science, social justice, and ultimately the Cold War. He oversaw the development of the most devastating weapon in human history and then spent the rest of his life warning that this weapon of indiscriminate terror did not make us safer but more vulnerable. The only effective defense against the nuclear nightmare, he said, was the elimination of nuclear weapons. For this warning he was ruthlessly silenced. “We have had the bomb on our minds since 1945,” E.L. Doctorow observed. “It was first our weaponry and then our diplomacy, and now it's our economy. How can we suppose that something so monstrously powerful would not, after forty years, compose our identity?” The great golem we have made against our enemies is our culture – its logic, its faith, its vision.” Kai Bird, along with Martin J. Sherwin, wrote the Pulitzer-prize winning biography ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer'.

"As Kennedy said at the United Nations, there is a 'sword of Damocles hanging by a thread over humanity,' and we're still in that same position today and will remain in that position unless we figure out how to get rid of nuclear weapons." This is a rebroadcast of Ep. 88, aired originally April 7th, 2021. Marty Sherwin died on October 6th, 2021. ----- Pulitzer-prize winning historian Martin J. Sherwin is on the podcast, discussing his new book Gambling with Armageddon: Nuclear Roulette from Hiroshima to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The book sheds new light and brings fresh insights into what was one of the most volatile, potentially catastrophic periods of time in history— a time when the fate of the world was at a precipice. Many of the questions one naturally has about this period are answered by Marty Sherwin in dramatic, detailed manner. How did it happen in the first place that the Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, was storing nuclear arms in Cuba? What role, contrary to what he writes in his autobiography, did Bobby Kennedy play? Who were the real heroes here that caused the world to avoid all-out nuclear war, and how close did we really come? Perhaps, most importantly: what have we, what has the world learned? Are we any better off now than before? Marty Sherwin, the world's preeminent Cold War historian is here, and he explains our past, our future, and our tragic reliance on Nuclear Arms. The Manhattan Project: Visions of a Nuclear Future, Dr. Marty Sherwin Art of Living series, Smithsonian Associates In 1939, the world's scientific community began a desperate race against an imagined German project to unlock the process of splitting a uranium atom. Under a cloak of secrecy, the Manhattan Project—code name for the 1941 wartime initiative to develop nuclear weapons—began. The next year, a group of physicists produced the first nuclear chain reaction under the grandstands of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago. This success generated a renewed sense of urgency, and nuclear facilities were built at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Hanford, Washington, and Los Alamos, New Mexico. Our guest today, Dr Martin J. Sherwin, professor of history at George Mason University explores the history and legacy of this world-changing mission. He is the author of Destroyed: Hiroshima and its Legacies, and co-author with Kai Bird of Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Enjoy.
