Many of you might remember a guest we had back in season six by the name of John “Lucky” Luckadoo, the last surviving original pilot from the 100th Bomb group. As a B-17 Bomber Pilot, he flew twenty five missions out of England during WWII. When we spoke with Lucky, he was with author, Kevin Maurer who told his story in a book called, “Damn Lucky, One Man's Courage During the Bloodiest Military Campaign in Aviation History”. Almost two years have passed since that episode aired and we have continued to stay in touch with Lucky. In February of this year, (2024) I was able speak with Lucky who, at the time, was three weeks shy of his 102nd birthday! In this episode of Your History Your Story, I'll be sharing my conversation with Lucky about the recent Apple TV series “Masters of the Air”, which tells the story of the 100th Bomb Group, known as the “Bloody Hundredth”. Although, when we spoke, all the episodes had not yet aired, I was able to get Lucky's thoughts on what he had seen so far and how it compared to what really happened. After all, Lucky was there... CTL Script/ Top Stories of March 16th            Publish Date: March 15th            From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast    Today is Saturday, March 16th, and Happy 64th Birthday to rapper Flavor Flav. ***03.16.24 – BIRTHDAY – FLAVA FLAV I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Cherokee County Magistrate Court Upgrades Electronic Warrant Interchange System Woodstock Baseball Star Earns Appointment to U.S. Naval Academy Private-School Vouchers Narrowly Clear Georgia House   We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    Commercial: CU of GA   STORY 1: Cherokee County Magistrate Court Upgrades Electronic Warrant Interchange System The Cherokee County Magistrate Court upgraded its Electronic Warrant Interchange system to the new enterprise version, called Anywhere Warrant, on March 12. This system has saved taxpayers over $13 million in labor and transportation costs since 2010, with more than $1.3 million saved in 2023 alone. Chief Associate Magistrate Greg Douds negotiated the upgrade, which had a one-time fee of $25,000, paid from a budget surplus. The annual maintenance fee is now $32,500, slightly lower than the previous version's fee of $33,054. Anywhere Warrant allows law enforcement officers to use the system from any computer or laptop in squad cars, eliminating the need for dedicated workstations. According to the magistrate court, the upgrade fee will pay for itself in less than one week, and the annual maintenance fee will pay for itself in the first 9 days of use each year. STORY 2: Woodstock Baseball Star Earns Appointment to U.S. Naval Academy Woodstock High School senior and baseball standout Kevin Maurer received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. With a family legacy of military service, Maurer sees this opportunity as contributing to a greater cause. His successful baseball career and academic achievements led to interest from various universities, including the Naval Academy. After committing to the Naval Academy as a pitcher, he completed the extensive application process. Maurer's dedication to service extends beyond baseball, as he aims to support mental health initiatives within the military. His coaches and community commend his leadership and commitment, highlighting Maurer's readiness to represent Woodstock High School and serve his country. STORY 3: Private-School Vouchers Narrowly Clear Georgia House The Georgia House of Representatives narrowly passed a private-school vouchers bill aimed at helping students in low-performing public schools transfer to private schools, with a 91-82 vote. The bill, which returns to the state Senate due to changes made in the House, limits the financial impact by capping voucher spending at 1% of the Quality Basic Education fund. Eligibility is restricted to students from families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty limit. Democrats argue against vouchers, advocating for increased public school funding. The bill also includes provisions for teacher pay raises and pre-kindergarten enrollment. It would be effective from the 2025-26 school year until June 2035. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    Back in a moment  Break:  DRAKE – HENRY CO SHERIFFS   STORY 4: Fulton Judge Dismisses Six Counts in Trump Election Interference Case A Fulton County Superior Court judge dismissed six counts of a 41-count indictment against former President Donald Trump and co-defendants related to alleged interference in Georgia's 2020 presidential election. Judge Scott McAfee found these charges legally defective, including Trump's involvement in a controversial January 2021 phone call with Georgia's Secretary of State. The ruling didn't address a motion to disqualify Fulton District Attorney Fani Willis due to a potential conflict of interest. McAfee also quashed charges against Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and others for allegedly soliciting fake electors. The judge cited a lack of detail in the counts. Despite the dismissal, Trump still faces 88 charges across multiple jurisdictions. McAfee expects to rule on the disqualification motion soon. STORY 5: Cherokee County Clerk of Courts Opening Second Location The Cherokee County Clerk of Courts is expanding with a new location set to open on March 18 at the Cherokee County Tax Commissioner building on Towne Lake Parkway. Clerk of Courts Patty Baker announced that the new venue will offer passport application support, notary public services, and kiosks for civil filings and copies. The convenient location aims to provide easy access and ample parking for visitors. The new location will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, while the original location at the Cherokee County Justice Center in Canton will remain open in Suite G-170. Commercial: INGLES 7   STORY 6: APPROVED: Woodstock Takes Next Steps Toward More Public Art Woodstock City Council unanimously approved the City of Woodstock Public Art Program, aiming to enhance the city's cultural landscape. Developed in collaboration with the Woodstock Public Art Plan Steering Committee and Designing Local, the plan incorporates community input to determine art goals and potential projects. Over 400 residents participated in a survey, indicating preferences for art in various locations like gateways, downtown, parks, and more. Mural, sculpture, and functional art were among the most popular suggestions. The plan designates specific types of art for different areas, such as suburban living, neighborhood living, and urban core. Funding sources and examples of public art installations are also provided, with estimates ranging from $10,000 for murals to $1-2 million for large sculptures. STORY 7: Cherokee County Dog Found After Being Lost 17 Days Winston, a local dog missing for 17 days, was found in the Macedonia area and reunited with his family. The Hickory Flat Chick-fil-A hosted a "heroes party" to honor those involved in the search. Winston went missing while his owners were away, prompting a community-wide search effort led by friends and residents using drones and social media. After numerous sightings and a nighttime rescue in the Macedonia community, Winston was found thanks to a feeding station. The community gathered to thank the rescuers, with Winston receiving a new collar and cake from Chick-fil-A. The event celebrated the community's resolve and unity in supporting one another. We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: ATL HEALTH FAIR   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for listening to today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger podcast. . This is a great read that explores how grey the lines can be around what is right and wrong, especially during war time. Those Faustian bargains we make with ourselves when we truly believe what we are doing is the right thing can quickly turn on us. Maurer is uniquely suited to teach us some lessons of Afghanistan through fiction that resonate in truth. A slow burning thriller that is thought provoking and thoroughly entertaining. Not many can be equally compelling writing both nonfiction and fiction, but Kevin is definitely one of those authors!

On December 7, 1941, nineteen year old college freshman, John Luckadoo was chauffeuring around a group of local kids in a Buick he had borrowed from a neighbor in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. John was not able to use his father's car, because his father didn't yet trust him behind the wheel! Suddenly, while listening to the car radio, a newsman interrupted the program to announce that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. John was well aware that a war had been raging in Europe for over two years, however, even though he had never heard of Pearl Harbor, he knew that the United States was about to enter the war and his life was about to change significantly. Less than two years later, John would be piloting B-17 Bombers over enemy occupied Europe. Between June and October of 1943, John, who would earn the nickname “Lucky”, would fly 25 missions as part of the 8th Air Force's 100th Bomb Group, known as “The Bloody Hundreth”, due to the heavy losses it sustained. In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with 100 year old John “Lucky” Luckadoo along with award winning journalist and NY Times bestselling author, Kevin Maurer.   Kevin's latest book, “Damn Lucky, One Man's Courage During the Bloodiest Military Campaign in Aviation History” tells the story of John Luckadoo. In World War II, an American bomber pilot's combat service was to last for 25 missions. However, most did not survive to see their 10th. In October 1943, John ‘Lucky' Luckadoo began his 22nd mission. The assault on Bremen, Germany was to utilize dense cloud cover to shield the B-17 Flying Fortresses. However, when they arrived, the clouds had disappeared, and 50 American pilots and crew members would lose their lives. HBH is honored to be joined by Kevin Maurer, the author of ‘Damn Lucky: One Man's Courage During the Bloodiest Military Campaign in Aviation History', and special guest - 100-year-old John ‘Lucky' Luckadoo. The Nazi submarine pens outside of Bremen  were extremely well-fortified by anti-aircraft munitions and German Luftwaffe fighter planes. Even with the expected cloud cover, the mission was to be harrowing. However, when the expected advantage was nowhere to be found, Second Lieutenant John ‘Lucky' Luckadoo thought this mission may be his last.Like 10 million other brave young Americans, ‘Lucky' answered the call and joined the US military after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. He trained as a pilot with the US Army Air Force and was assigned to the 100th Bomb Group stationed in Thorpe Abbotts, England, where he flew bombing runs over France and Germany to destroy the Nazi war machine. Today, John “Lucky” Luckadoo is the last surviving member of the 100th Bomb Group from World War II.  Most of the bomber crews of the 100th only survived 5 missions, earning the group the unenviable nickname “The Bloody Hundredth". It not until 50 years after the end of the war that John began to talk about his time at war because “those were not the happiest days of our lives and recalling them was not a happy experience.” Lucky relates that bestselling author Kevin Maurer called him “out of the blue” and said he had heard some of his stories and wanted to read his book. John replied “Well, I don't have a book' and that began a collaboration that resulted in “Damn Lucky; One Man's Courage during the Bloodiest Campaign in Aviation History. Lucky and his high school friend Sully both wanted to fly and tried to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Sully got permission but Lucky had to wait until the US entered the war. Later in the war Lucky flew to a nearby base to visit Sully and saw a crashed aircraft. Tragically, that had been Sully's plane. Kevin does an excellent job of translating Lucky's war experiences including the Bremen mission when German pilots crashed their planes directly into the bombers. Of the 18 aircraft that began that mission, only six returned to base. Kevin has written books that span from the Second World War to the present day. He says there are some universal truths regardless of the generation. Most soldiers are fighting for the person next to them and leave the politics for home.  He says one shouldn't give the military a mission unless you are sure of what you want them to achieve because they will sacrifice their lives trying to accomplish that mission. TAKEAWAY: Lucky says he was fortunate to have an author sufficiently talented to put the reader in the cockpit.

Kevin Maurer has written eight books, all of them focused on the military in some way. His most recent book is “Rock Force: The American Paratroopers Who Took Back Corregidor and Exacted MacArthur’s Revenge on Japan.” The book was published by Dutton Caliber. In “Rock Force,” Maurer dives into one relatively small battle during World War II and shows us the men who were there. Maurer has frequently embedded with American soldiers. In 2003, he followed the 82nd Airborne Division during the initial invasion of Iraq and wrote articles for the Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina. He returned to cover the soldiers more than a dozen times, most recently in 2010, where he spent ten weeks with a Special Forces team in Afghanistan. In 2012, Maurer co-wrote, with a former Navy Seal, “No Easy Day: The First Hand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama bin Laden.” That book was a New York Times best-seller.

In this episode Matt Crawford speaks with author Kevin Maurer about his book Rock Force. WWII is such a wide ranging and detailed part of our history that it still holds tales of heroism barely recounted. Maurer takes us back to The Pacific theatre and the men who were tasked with taking back an American foothold. There are many stories that detail what happened but few capture the personality of the men involved as well as Maurer. I felt like I was landing on topside with these men and enjoying a slice of apple pie. A phenomenal and personal read.

This week we rolled back the clock with journalist and author Kevin Maurer as we talk about his most recent book Rock Force: The American Paratroopers Who Took Back Corregidor and Exacted MacArthur’s Revenge on Japan. Corregidor, as known as “The Rock” or the “Gibraltar of the East” was the scene of one of the worst defeats in American military history. Corregidor was the largest of four fortified islands protecting the mouth of Manila Bay. It had been fortified prior to World War I with powerful coastal artillery. It was relatively small, just 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide at its head, and only two miles from Bataan. Its widest elevated area, known as Topside, held most of the fort’s 56 coastal artillery pieces and installations. A labyrinth of tunnels connected the gun emplacements that housed 1,000 troops and a hospital. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and invaded the Philippines, Corregidor came under siege from December 29, 1941, through April 1942. After the fall of Bataan, the Japanese landed troops on Corregidor. The bloody fighting continued until May when General Jonathan Wainwright, who commanded the American and Filipino forces after General MacArthur’s evacuation, surrendered. By late 1944, the war had turned and MacArthur was leading a monumental, but unnecessary, campaign to retake the Philippines. Thus, retaking “The Rock” was of huge symbolical importance to the Americans. Rock Force has been called a "genuine, compelling and utterly riveting" account of the harrowing fight for Corregidor in a way that "captures the language and trappings of World War II." It's truly a must-read for any history buff. Maurer is a very experienced author. He spent time embedded with Special Forces operators in Afghanistan and with the 82nd Airborne. He also co-wrote the book No Easy Day with Navy SEAL Mark Owen that recounts the raid that took out Osama bin Laden. So, he knows how to tell a military story. Our Journey to Becoming Foster Parents “What’s your plan for foster care? How many kids are you planning to accept at a time? What ages of kids are you planning to foster? Are you hoping to adopt from the foster care system?” These questions and many more have been asked by very well-meaning, caring people over the last few months as we’ve shared the news that we were becoming foster parents. If you know me, you know I’m a planner. I’m a to do list queen. I love having order and organization in our lives. I’m a big proponent of setting goals. And yet, when it comes to foster care, I don’t have a pre-determined plan or fill-in-the-blank answers. In fact, my answer to pretty much every question is, “I don’t know. We’re open to how God leads.” That might seem vague or even like a cop out. But it’s the truest answer I have to give right now. Why We Said Yes to Foster Parenting You see, we aren’t saying yes to foster care because it fits into a grand plan we’ve written out for the next 10 years of our life. In all honesty, saying yes to foster care feels pretty crazy with our current workload and responsibilities and season of life. And yet, to the deepest part of our core, we know this is God’s call on our life and we know that He has a plan for our future that is greater and bigger and crazier than what we could dream up. So we've jumped off the cliff of our comfort and plunging into the unknown in full confidence that God’s got this. He knows what the future holds and He’s the One Who holds the future — and we can trust Him to carry us, even on the really hard days. In this week's episode of the podcast, Jesse and I share in-depth how we ended up on this journey (it wasn't one we ever anticipated being on!), why we made the decision to pursue getting licensed, what the licensing process was like, and what we've learned along the way. We also answer some of your most often-asked questions regarding foster care. In This Episode:  [01:23] My exercise ball and cleaning out our closets have been saving our lives. We share why. [06:38] I just finished reading Parenting and wanted to share a few of my favorite quotes. [10:56] Jesse is reading Hunter Killer. [12:40] The unexpected path that led us to become foster parents.  [19:37] We talk about what the classes and certification were like.  [26:00] After finishing all the classes, we moved on to the home study. [29:18] What the best step to start with to look into fostering? [32:21] Why we decided to actively involve our kids in the decision-making process. [34:51] What are some of the best ways others can come alongside and help foster families?  Links and Resources: My Exercise Ball Parenting by Paul David Tripp Hunter Killer by Kevin Maurer and Kevin McCurley CrystalPaine.com MoneySavingMom.com YourBloggingMentor.com My Instagram account (I’d love for you to follow me there!
