Join me for My Distillery Chat with Tracey Clarke in Kilbeggan. Tracey has worked as a Tour Guide in Kilbeggan Distillery for over 23yrs. She is part of the local community and would have grown up knowing it as the Old Locke's Distillery, after the family that previously owned it and ran it. It is an amazingly well preserved example of Victorian, Industrial revolution era equipment and machinery, mingled into a distillery experience and working micro distillery onsite. I would highly recommend you visit and experience it for yourself..... maybe ask for Tracey as your tour guide.... I learned an awful lot and I hope you do too. The Certified Irish Angus Schools competition challenges students to rear five Irish Angus calves over 18 months while completing a research project, and is organised in partnership with ABP Ireland and Kepak Group. On this week's Beef Edge podcast, the students from Mercy Secondary School Kilbeggan Co. Westmeath discuss their involvement in the competition and their journey to date. The team comprises of fours students Chloe McDermott, Mary Ellen Colton, Trása Bracken and Sinéad Bracken. With the theme of ‘Exploring the opportunities of low carbon beef' in mind, the students have developed a five-point plan to support sustainability in the Irish Angus breed of cattle. Trása and Sinéad discuss their experience of the calves being reared on the farm and highly recommend the competition to other students thinking of participating. Mary discusses her experience and the skills she developed by participating in the competition. Mary highlights that being from a non-farming background, it has given her a better understanding of beef production systems in Ireland. The students will have the cattle on display on Sunday 13th August at the Tullamore show at the Teagasc stand. Tasting NotesWhen John Teeling converted an industrial alcohol plant in County Louth into what became "Cooley" distillery in the late 80s, the seeds were planted for the revival of Irish whiskey. Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell, and Connemara all sprung forth, as well as a slew of barrels for smaller brands to grow and experiment. Post-Beam Suntory acquiring Cooley and the brands, the second generation of Teelings went to work on founding their eponymous whiskey company. Today, happily aging and bubbling away in downtown Dublin, the Teeling Whiskey Co. is still owned by John and Stephen, but with a 40% stake by Bacardi, the whiskey has grown its global presence. Presumably, the brand began life from older Cooley stocks, finished in ex-rum casks and bottled non-chill filtered at 92 proof. The nose is an explosion of fruit and malt with a rich cereal grain and sweet tropical fruit note emerging. On the palate more malt, sweet spice, and a treacly, syrupy rum-soaked spice cake. The finish is long, sweet, and simply pleasurable.
When it comes to firsts and oldests in whiskey, finding a clear answer is a challenge. This week, I'll take a look at some of the criteria around determining the oldest distillery and we'll see why finding an answer is so tough. Plus, I'll continue my journey around Northern Ireland with a visit to Hinch Distillery and Alfred Barnard and his mates will visit one of the challengers for the title oldest distillery in Ireland.
Most of the time when a Binny's Handpicked Single Barrel comes in, it's gone within a few weeks. Sometimes even quicker. The good news is the Whiskey Hotline picks hundreds of barrels every year, and because of there are a lot of hidden gems that get lost in the shuffle. Pat brought Joe, and a box of hidden Irish Whiskey, Bourbon, Rye, Armagnac, Rum and Scotch gems. The Binny's name goes on these bottles because the Whiskey Hotline is excited about them. They turn down barrels all the time if they don't meet their standards. And contrary to internet chatter, the Whiskey Hotline samples everything before buying a barrel, they don't just let a Master Distiller picks a cask and then slaps a Binny's logo on it. Sometimes there are so many Handpicked bottles in stores that it can become overwhelming, and they slip out of consciousness. The revival of Irish whiskey is real - I have seen it first hand. And after traveling the entire island of Ireland and Northern Ireland, I can see first hand the results of a country's passion for its lost heritage. One of the men who was at the forefront of the new breed of Irish distillery owners is Jack Teeling. And Jack has been a part of two different phases of Irish whiskey's expansion beyond the one time monopoly of Irish Distillers, Ltd - first with his father John Teeling at Cooley Distillery and the second time as one of the new young guns of Irish whiskey when he opened Teeling Distillery in Dublin with his brother in 2015. Hear his story.

Kilbeggan Distillery situated on the River Brosna in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, Ireland. It is owned by Japanese Beam Suntory. A small pot still distillery, the licence to distil dates to 1757, a copy of which can be seen in the distillery. Similar to many Irish distilleries, Kilbeggan endured financial difficulties during the early 20th century, and ceased operations in 1957. However, the licence was maintained and the distillery was later refurbished, with distilling recommencing on-site in 2007. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/irishwhiskeyreview/message
Originally published in 1993 Locke's Distillery is being reissued to celebrate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the company. Despite market dominance by Scotch in this century, Irish whiskey remains its peer. Locke's Distillery has been manufacturing its famous brand of whiskey on the banks of the Brusna river in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath, since 1757, linking Ireland's industrial past to its future. From business archives and family papers, Andy Bielenberg has written a compelling history of the fluctuating fortunes of the distillery, tracing its origins and transformations in organization through the years to its present-day revival. He surveys the buildings and machinery, the process of distillation and marketing strategies, as well as documenting the Locke family's role within the company and their contribution to the social life of the midlands. Illustrated by period photographs, portraits and trade labels, and augmented by useful tables and appendix matter, Locke's Distillery will be of keen interest to regional and economic historians, and fascinate all who savour Irish whiskey and its traditions. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3AAndrew+Bielenberg&s=relevancerank&text=Andrew+Bielenberg&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/irishwhiskeyreview/message

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!

John Teeling is widely regarded as the father of the Irish whiskey renaissance. As a doctoral student at Harvard in 1970 he examined the collapse of Irish whiskey from having about 60% of world sales in 1850 and hundreds of distilleries, to becoming a monopoly in 1973 with less than 2% of Scotch sales. He made the decision to set up a new distillery. It took 16 years to get the resources to do so. In the meantime he lectured in Business Administration at University College Dublin and developed a series of mining and oil exploration companies. In 1986 he set up Cooley Distillery followed 19 years later with the re-opening the long closed Locke’s Distillery in Kilbeggan. The key element in Cooley was to have both column stills and pot stills. This enabled Cooley to distil and supply a full range of whiskies from heavily peated to single grain. Over the years a range of Irish whiskies appeared on shelves around the world. The venture took 11 years to make a profit and 15 years to payback but changing tastes in the early 2000s favoured Irish whiskey and sales boomed. Cooley was bought by Beam/Suntory in early 2012.In 2013 John re-entered the business by acquiring the Harp brewery in Dundalk and setting up the Great Northern Distillery. Two large distilleries came on stream in 2015, pot stills and column stills. Once again, The Great Northern is now supplying a wide range of new make malt, pot still and grain whiskey to small distillers, Private Label and Retail Own Label customers.John is married for 45 years to Deirdre with 3 children. Jack and Stephen have built the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in Dublin, the only operating distillery in the capital. Emma is a Professor of Science.John holds degrees from University College Dublin (B Comm., M Econ. Sc.), the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (MBA) and a doctorate from Harvard Business School.Patrick Dalywww.albalogistics.com Author of the book International Supply Chain Relationships:Creating Competitive Advantage in a Globalized Economy See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
I was lucky enough to spend some time in New York recently with Beam Suntory Irish Whiskey portfolio brand ambassador Janice Snowden who walked us through the tales and tastes of these amazing whiskey brands and their sister brand Connemara. The Kilbeggan and Cooley Distillery where these brands are distilled have played a vital role in the Irish whiskey industry of the distant past and indeed of the more recent past and if it wasn't for the vision of believers in the Irish whiskey category, we wouldn't have anything to report on today. Enjoy!

Less than an hour’s drive west from Dublin, lies the small town of Kilbeggan - a town that has been home to many distilleries over the years and it’s obvious why - there’s plenty of fresh water to turn into whiskey and bogs to provide the fuel to power the stills and Westmeath itself is a great barley producing county The most famous of these distilleries, acknowledged as the oldest licensed distillery in the world dating back to 1757 was John Locke and Sons Distillery and it was this distillery that brought an Irish government to its knees.

Now working with his son John (pictured above), Kilbeggan only use the oats sourced from only their own farm and on todays show today Peter and Pat chat how to make the perfect bowl of porridge, treating your soil like your fifth child when growing organically and how instinctively knowing how and when to harvest by appearance and touch from an ear of corn. We also chat crop rotation, farmyard manure and a biscuit range that is his wifes recipe. What a story. An absolute gentleman and another whopper of a sodshow. Ireland's Kilbeggan Distillery is said to be the world's oldest whiskey distillery, and it's now being run by what may well be one of the youngest head distillers. Andrina Fitzgerald grew up a few miles from Kilbeggan, and was promoted to head distiller shortly after Beam acquired Kilbeggan as part of the Cooley Whiskey deal. We'll hear from this rising star in the whiskey business on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, the latest from Kentucky on the Pappy van Winkle theft, along with an update on the Teeling family's plans for a new distillery in Dublin. This week's tasting notes include the "hottest" whisky in the world right now, this year's Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 20-year-old Bourbon.
“Gather up the pots and the old tin cans... the mash, the corn, the barley and the bran...run like the devil from the excise man...keep the smoke from rising barney...keep your eyes well peeled today, the excise men are on their way...” And we all know what the ‘mountain tay’ the excise men were looking for in the hills of Connemara! Poitin. It’s long associated with illegality: first outlawed back in 1661, it was relatively recently, in 1997, when the Revenue Commissioners permitted the licensed sale of it within Ireland. Ella meets Mairtin MacConrai, a part time farmer from Leitir Moir, Connemara, who first made poitin with his father 50 years ago. She also visits Cooley Distillery in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath where they are making 1,000 bottles of 65% proof poitin; she talks to head distiller Alex Chasko and manager, Brian Quinn.
Irish whiskies once ruled the world, and Dublin was the center of Ireland's whisky industry. There are no distilleries left in Dublin, but there's plenty of whisky history to be found, along with a handful of good whisky shops and great pubs.
