This is not an episode we ever thought we would need to record, yet here we are, reflecting on recent heartrending tragedies, like the shooting at UNLV. On our journey to understanding, we find solace in the company of our dear friend, Ryan Patrick from the band Otherwise. We weave through our emotion-laden experiences, using music as our thread, as we explore its potential to heal and unite in times of despair. Ryan and I, we're not just musicians. We're also passionate about reaching out to those who could use a comforting musical note. Our conversation turns to the transformative power of music, especially for our heroes - the veterans. As part of our outreach program, Life by Music, we have been offering a free six-week guitar course for veterans. It's not just about teaching chords and jam tracks, it's about creating a refuge, a place of music and healing. We also share some emotionally charged stories about friends battling cancer and how music acted as a therapeutic escape for them. In this episode, we also shine a spotlight on the potential of music as a transformative tool for at-risk youth. Joined by a nonprofit founder and graduate of the Las Vegas Academy, we discuss plans to donate instruments to Clark County School District music programs. As we wrap up, we can't go without expressing our gratitude to you, our loyal listeners, and our sponsors who've backed us throughout this journey. So, let's face it together, life's rocky roads and the symphony of our triumphs, one song at a time.
Faith Under Fire: First Amendment protections for students and their parents Parents are increasingly being ignored, targeted and attacked – for protecting the rights of their children in school settings. Family Life talked with a Christian attorney who says what is happening to the young people is even worse. A 15-year-old student in a Clark County school district in Nevada was forced to perform a profanity-laced, sexually explicit, and obscene monologue before the entire class as a graded assignment. School officials then lied to the parents. Although the teen girl had been forced to say those words in front of her class the school board prevented the student's mother from reading aloud those same words in a public meeting of adults. Abigail Southerland of the American Center for Law and Justice explains the case for us, as well as the multiple efforts which the parents made to complain to the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts. (The girl's father had to do so virtually, as he was on a military deployment.) A decision from the Federal Court is expected soon. Because of the First Amendment issues raised, there could be an appeal of the verdict, to address what the plaintiffs call compelled speech for the student and restricted speech for the parents. Bonus content: A written summary of the experiences of this family and the case before the Nevada Court ACLJ's one-page guide on the Free Speech rights of all students in schools nationwide.

Conflict Not necessarily bad or drama Think of it as the perception that you don’t have something that you really do have I had it all along Such a human thing to think we don’t have something What do you want that you feel like you don’t already have? Doubt or disbelief disconnect from what you want 2. Secrets Characters have to have secrets So strong that they motivate. Secret doesn’t have to be dark. Sometimes the secret is a secret to you Until they up pack or purge 3. Stakes How you do one thing is how you do everything They have to be high or it’s boring Best stories include increased stakes We are the affirmation Win With Money Series Move away from paycheck to paycheck to more freedom! Stop struggling and start progressing. This week, Russ, Adam and I briefly talk about the passing of Adam West before going into our memories of murdered Optimus Prime, and why Street Fighter V still doesn’t have an Arcade Mode. I talk about dabbling with 8-bit computers and old school racism in general. You will learn the one racist slur that actually irritates Adam. Yeah, this episode is a totally not safe for work. I also had my 20-ish High School Reunion from the Las Vegas Academy, restoring my Commodore 128, and rediscovering how slow and weak our old computers really were. Eventually we discuss the current state of sports coming to Las Vegas. We bounced around all topics this week.
Nikki has been blessed with discovering her gifts as a singer/songwriter at a very early age. Her family has always played a major role in her evolution as an artist. In her early childhood, back in Camden, Arkansas, Nikki recalls belting out songs from the likes of Anita Baker & Shirley Murdock, alongside her Mom and creating her own tunes playing around on her grandma’s piano. At 9 years old, now living in Las Vegas, Nikki’s musical talents would continue to blossom. She, along with her older brother, Ne-Yo, participated in Kids For A Better Society (KFABS), a non-for-profit organization founded by their uncle, Jerry Smith. Here, Nikki received vocal lessons and began performing on stages in front of live audiences. Nikki went on to continue her musical quest by studying classical music, at the Las Vegas Academy for the Performing Arts. While attending the Academy, she along with two other classmates, formed KNIA, a 3 girl R&B/POP group. Nikki immediately took the spotlight in KNIA, as the lead singer and songwriter. Under the management of Terry Lynn Cason, of C&L Music, KNIA had the opportunity to work alongside other music industry pioneers including songwriting with Quincy Jones Jr. of QD3 Productions and vocal training with Mary Wilson of The Supremes. Nikki along with KNIA have also performed at many live venues including MTV’s “The Cut.” In 2003, Nikki decided to branch out and take on some independent projects that allowed her songwriting skills and talents to shine with numerous artists in the music industry including: Dr. Dre, Rodney Jerkins, Alonzo Jackson, Tiffany Villarreal (Aftermath), Ne-Yo (Def Jam Recordings), Kurt Farquhar (Farquhar Productions, Inc), and Nina Sky (Universal).
