The Joker has to halt his... uhh... "love party" due to the arrival of… THE PHANTASM! GASP! Say the line, Phantasm - “YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH AWAITS”. YAY! He also blows smoke, apparently... and has an Achilles Groin. The next episode follows on Wednesday. Same Bat Pod, different Bat Minute! Join us on Facebook at the Bat Minute Listener's Cave! Time waits for no man and, mercifully, 2020 is almost at its end. It's been a wild old time and with this being our penultimate main episode of the year, we figured it would be best to finally bring on a guest that we have been dancing around, trying to organise, for a long time.  This week, we are absolutely delighted to be joined by the star of such films as THE WOMAN, POD, JUG FACE, DARLING and IMITATION GIRL... It's the wonderful LAUREN ASHLEY CARTER!  The film? FRANKENHOOKER!  It's our third Frank Henenlotter film after Brain Damage and Basket Case. Now, Lauren brings 1990's FRANKENHOOKER. In the past, Mitch has been a bit unsure of these. How will this one fare? Andy thinks he's going to like it... The synopsis is as follows: A New Jersey mad doctor (James Lorinz) rebuilds his girlfriend (Patty Mullen) with body parts from exploded hookers. Please note that this podcast may contain strong language and even stronger Scottish accents.  Also, why not pop over and take a look at our Patreon page? Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have The Haunting of Gillespie House by Darcy Coates! Gillespie House is a thing of dreams to me. A modernized old mansion - all of the remnants of its former glory tucked up into the attic, a crumbling graveyard adjacent. Perfection! That it is short I liked, as this was expanded from a short story there was only so much story to tell. Elle starts out curious and travels through the house and time becoming more determined to find explanations in history despite many terrifying nights alone. This reminded me very much of Darling, starring Lauren Ashley Carter. It is far more modern, and far more bloody, but if you like this lone girl angle it is a good fit. The Others also comes to mind here. It is not the top of the pile when it comes to Darcy Coates, but a quick, quiet read all the same. Now it was not a very creepy read, but I enjoyed the atmosphere very much as it lent itself to my memories of an old farmhouse. There was something vaguely Lovecraftian about the grounds and the house itself as well. Not in the mythos sense, as Lovecraft is a different thing to me than most, but in the isolation and the tricks old landscapes play on the mind. While in college Sean Spillane co-founded a band called Otto which eventually became ARLO and went on to sign with Sub Pop Records in 2000. ARLO toured extensively in the U.S. and played with bands like The Shins, Wilco, and The Foo Fighters. After ARLO disbanded he joined Midway, a Los Angeles based band with a rabid following. In 2010 he wrote, produced, recorded and performed original songs and the score for Lucky Mckee's "The Woman" which melted faces and made heads explode when it premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The following year, Spillane composed and wrote original 80's inspired songs for The Chiller Network's "Ghoul". In 2012 he composed and wrote songs for "Jug Face" a film starring former guest of the Following Films podcast, Lauren Ashley Carter. Who in addition to being a gifted actress, does a wicked good Jodie Foster impersonation. I had Sean on the show to discuss one of his latest projects, MURDER MADE EASY, a film that he provided both the soundtract and the score. We also discuss his Indie Country band "Highland Hawks" which draws inspiration from growing up in Texas and from the outlaw country movement of the 1970's and early 1980's. And as always, I manage to shoehorn in my love of the music in the underappreciated 90’s gem RAVENOUS. It seems like every movie nowadays ends with some kind of twists. Some of them work so well they became a part of pop culture. These aren't those movies. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel talk movies with unnecessary twists and what makes a good twist. The show starts with the guys trying to figure out what had the best weekend. Blake talks about beer, Danny talks vegetarian tacos, and Nathaniel talks about his dog's encounter with Pennywise. As usual, the three talk about the movies they have seen. Nathaniel talks about a wannabe Halloween classic, Danny talks about musical biopics, and Blake surprisingly talks about horror. From there the boys talk about unnecessary twists. What's Nathaniel's gripe with The Usual Suspects? Where does The Crying Game fit into all of this? How long before someone makes an M. Night joke?Plus, another visit from Lauren Ashley Carter!Adventures in Movies! is hosted by Nathaniel Muir, Blake, and Danny. You can find Nathaniel on Instagram at nathaninpoortaste. This week we have an interview with Lauren Ashley Carter. Lauren has starred in indie horror favorites like Darling and Jug Face. She discussed her past, future, and love of the genre. She also talks about her newest movie, Artik. Danny, Blake, and Nathaniel also discuss serial killer movies. If you have not already done so, check out our It Chapter Two Special Edition. The guys have strong opions on the latest Stephen King adaptation. It only makes sense they would talk about the movie's strong box office performance. As superhero movies become more popular, they are also starting to become better received critically. The three talk about Joker's latest festival success. But do they really want to? This week's main segment is on serial killer movies. There are so many to choose from so the boys had plenty of material. What makes a good serial killer movie? Why do people like them so much? How do they differ from slashers? Where does Mega Man fit into all this? Welcome back to Nothing Shines Like Dirt First Feature Series episode 23. Today we have writer/director Natasha Kermani. We have a fabulous conversation about the sensory experience of her film Imitation Girl, island hopping through the stages of filmmaking, and a special announcement to your ego,”Grow up, you BABY!” “It’s not enough to just make a great film, you have to really go the whole way through. And especially today, when you not making a studio picture, you have to have a mind for it. You have to have a mind for every step of the business because no one’s gonna hold your hand, like everybody just could not care less about whether or not your film gets to where you want it to.” Natasha Kermani is a Brooklyn based writer and director, and co-founder of independent production company, Illium Pictures. Her credits includes feature films Imitation Girl, starring Lauren Ashley Carter, and Shattered, starring veteran actor Ray Wise. Short form work includes Lewis Black’s The Mentors (for which she won Best Director at the NYC Web Fest), the LAIFF award-winning comedy Pole, starring Stefanie Woodburn, and commercial work for clients including Microsoft, Nike, Redken, Vision Research, Pepsi, Bud Lite and Open Road Integrated Media. A graduate of NYU’s Film & Television Program, Natasha has spoken at the Chesapeake Film Festival’s Women in Film event, and is a regular panelist at NYU’s Production Lab, Reel Talk. Outside film and television, Natasha is an enthusiastic member of the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s Community Orchestra, whose profits go towards fostering music programs in underserved area schools. Natasha’s Iranian-American heritage, her interest in the female identity, and her love of music all converge in her work, a lyrical exploration of how we, and others, define ourselves. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Eight Films to Die For, a group of films that After Dark would release limited around the United States for a two week period yearly, actually had a few gems out of the group. Some of the more famous that have become cult film fans favorites include The Hamiltons, Lake Mungo, Dread, and Mulberry Street to name a few. However, there was a little scene one entitled Ritual from 2013 which was actually a pretty good film that co-host Phil listed as one of the top 20 best horror films of that year. Since, director Mickey Keating has had three more films released in a two year period. In 2016 he released festival flicks Darling and Carnage Park. However, in 2015 he released a little film called Pod that Dark Discussions decided to critique. When Martin leaves a voice mail for his brother Ed to stay away and don't tell anyone where he is, Ed meets up with their sister Lyla, and the two head to Martin's remote Maine lake home to find out what's wrong. When they arrive, they discover Martin has gone off the rails. Paranoid, scared, and most certainly dangerous, he begins ranting about a government conspiracy about experiments done upon unwitting soldiers. Now, having tried to go off the grid, Martin now believes that he's being followed and in danger of being killed. Ed and Lyla try to decipher the rantings of their sibling. Written and directed by Mickey Keating, the film stars genre favorite, Lauren Ashley Carter as Lyla, probably first noticed by horror fans in the sleeper hit Jugface. Dean Cates plays Ed while Brian Morvant, who plays Martin, easily shines as a disturbed person that may or may not be telling the truth. Listed as a top twenty film by Dark Discussions last year, co-hosts Abe and Phil take a look at it more closely.
