We had a guest cancel tonight so I'm making time for some mixed media, and calls from the audience on various topics from this week and beyond. Biden delivers his farewell address; a "Spy Hunter" falls victim to the old Linguini and Rose` trick; and then we have stories about how companies are infiltrating our dreams, and using our digital data to create NPC clones of us online! All of that and more, with a little nod to David Lynch (78) and Bob Uecker (90), who died today. “You are here as a spy” [ILLU] In Spy Hunter, it's 1914 and Sherlock Holmes has been murdered. Nobody knows who did it, but Wiggins, former Baker Street Irregular and Holmes' protégée, suspects a German spy. This is where H.B. Lyle's fourth installment in his Irregular series picks up. Ben joined us to share his journey as a writer focused on historical fiction, and how easily the ringleader of Holmes's street urchins turned to spycraft. The early days of MI5 and MI6 hold particular interest, and we learn about an inspiration by George MacDonald Fraser along the way. We also bring you the Sherlockian news, another podcast review in Madeline Quinones' "A Chance of Listening," and the Canonical Couplet quiz. The winner, chosen at random from all correct answers, will receive a copy of Spy Hunter. Send your answer to comment @ ihearofsherlock .com by October 14, 2024 at 11:59 a.m. EDT.

This week Justin talks with author, attorney, public speaker, security expert, and former FBI agent Eric O'Neill. Eric is the founder of the Georgetown Group, a premier investigative services and security firm. In law, he specializes in national security matters. But long before that, he was a young investigative specialist with the FBI. In December of 2000, he was unexpectedly pulled off his normal duties for a special assignment, which would arguably be one of the most important ever in the history of the bureau. He was going to go undercover against one of the FBI's own senior special agents who was suspected of spying for the Russian government: Robert Hanssen. Eric's experiences and contributions to Hanssen's capture would later serve as inspiration for the feature film Breach.Connect with Eric:Twitter: @eoniellIG: @ericoneill.officialCheck out his book, Gray Day, here.https://www.amazon.com/Gray-Day-Undercover-Mission-Americas/dp/0525573526Connect with Spycraft 101:Check out Justin's latest release, Covert Arms, here.spycraft101.comIG: @spycraft101Shop: spycraft-101.myshopify.comPatreon: Spycraft 101Find Justin's first book, Spyshots: Volume One, here.Download the free eBook, The Clandestine Operative's Sidearm of Choice, here. For the Love of ItFor the Love of It isn't just a podcast about good conversation. New episode! TJ 210 - Interview with Artist Mathew "Mac Rey" Reynolds. NEATO! Youtube (with us on video and extra images): https://youtu.be/ziuz8_HWJlk Audio Only Podcast (with better sound) at normal Podcatchers, links at https://talkingjoe.co.uk/ Following on from our recent deep dive into the Larry Hama written comic "Spy Hunter and Paper Boy" Mark and Tim Finn took some time to catch up with the artist of the book (and G.I. Joe fan) artist Mathew "Mac Rey" Reynolds. Mathew Mac Rey Reynolds We talk about discovering G.I. Joe as a kid back in 1982, the influence that it has had, early life, comics, art and breaking in to comics. We discuss his big comics projects to date: Vic Falcon (the creator owned project he developed with Larry Hama), Mercenary Sea, Ruff & Reddy, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, and speculate at the possibility of G.I. Joe in his future.

Talking Joe 209 - Spy Hunter & Paper Boy review - For Cobra Convergence 7 - The Best Hama Joe comic you've never heard of! Its the annual fan Cobra Convergence 7 where across the month Joe fan creators share new content! And the loose theme this year is spies, so what better tie in than to look at an unknown but GREAT comic from GI Joe Legend Larry Hama with the name SPYHUNTER in the tittle! Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/ In this episode of next episode Mark and Tim are talking about what I am calling Larry Hama's best GI Joe comic that you have never heard of, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, released May 2021. (Even if technically speaking it isn't GI Joe). Released May 2021, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy #1-6 (DC, $3.99 each): a "digital first" (but in reality digital only) comic arriving on DC's digital first channels including ComiXology, with all six issues released on the same day You can find the issues digitally on Amazon (formerly comiXology) link https://t.co/e4xMWUOT2x You can also find the issue in other places if you were to Google "spyhunter paperboy viewcomic" The series is written by Larry Hama with art by Mac Rey, and letters by Pat Brosseau and it features a crossover between two old video game franchises, Spy Hunter and Paper Boy. There are very few details publicly available about the book - all 6 issues were quietly released as "Digital first" in May 2021 without any sort of fanfare or publicity by DC. There was really nothing in the comic itself that explained what the series was or why it existed and never had a print release. This is some of the best GI Joe like work by Hama since his prime in the 80s at Marvel with some stunning art. You can read the series and listen or listen and then read it or just listen, whatever!. There are a few spoilers but we've tried not to go too heavy on details of plot. Mac Rey (artist) - Arkansas resident, Mathew “Mac Rey” Reynolds started out in comics back in the early days of Malibu on books like AIRMAN and THE PROTECTORS, more recently he has worked on THE MERCENARY SEA from Image Comics. And “The RUFF and REDDY SHOW” from DC comics. After working on a creator-owned project called VIC FALCON with G.I. JOE writer Larry Hama, they went on to work together on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy. Spy Hunter: a vehicular combat action game developed by Bally Midway and released for arcades in 1983. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons. Paperboy is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called The Daily Sun along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986.

A pair of games based on popular media works? Well, almost. Action Fighter clearly draws its inspiration from 1970s James Bond and his transforming Lotus Esprit, but unlike James Bond 007 for Multivision, it doesn't wear the actual Bond license. It's a much better game, though. Drawing heavy inspiration from the likes of Spy Hunter and (gulp) Xevious, it turns out to be an unexpected highlight of the Master System's launch period. On the other hand, Black Belt did sport a media license... in Japan. Here in the U.S., however, Sega scrubbed all of those details clean. And I do mean "scrubbed"—rather than simply redrawing the main character's sprites, the developers gave every single component of this game a visual overhaul. It's really quite an impressive effort—and yet, the underlying work still shines through. And, because it plays as a convincing Kung Fu clone, you can understand why they went to the trouble rather than just skipping over localization and publishing some other game instead. The SEVENTH entry in our Wacky Races mini-series is (somewhat?) at the mid-point of our ever-growing exploration of ensemble movies centered on a competition where the rules of the game break the rules of society. Wade & Siggy discuss the welcome spirit The Gumball Rally brings to the genre, how conflicts that are set up but never come into play are just fine, the raw sexuality of Raúl Juliá, where has Tricia O'Neal been all our lives, a novel way of mooning people, and ticking off more boxes of the series' use of elements from Spy Hunter. GUMBALL!!!! SENSITIVITY WARNING: This episode includes discussion of the film's use of the threat of sexual assault. Next Episode: Scavenger Hunt (1979)

Vi har sagt det før, men Moviebox er jo meget mere end bare VHS-film. Moviebox er en state of mind, people!

Paul E. Niemeyer is an artist with over 30 years of commercial illustration and design experience responsible for designing some of the most iconic arcade cabinets of all time including the legendary Mortal Kombat. We discuss his experiences as a professional artist both inside and outside of the video game industry and plenty more. Recorded LIVE at the Pittsburgh Gaming Expo on Saturday October 1st 2022. Enjoy! The audio only version of this episode is available on Spotify, Apple and pretty much anywhere else podcasts are found. Video is available on YouTube and Facebook. Just search for 'Start The Beat Podcast'.
In any video arcade, especially during the proverbial Golden Age of the Seventies and Eighties, it wasn't always the games on screen that first caught the eye but the colourful, imposing, sometimes lurid cabinets that housed them. This was bona fide pop art for the coin-op kids of America and beyond. Paul Niemeyer started his career at developer Bally Midway during the early Eighties, working on such titles as Ms. Pac-Man, Tapper and Spy Hunter. He also had a hand in creating such impressive cabinets as Discs of Tron, Satan's Hollow and the peculiar Wacko. Niemeyer tells us about the precision art of cutting and layering art screens, life at Midway during the Bally takeover, working with the so-called Bally Pinball art gods, the development of the notorious and enduring Mortal Kombat and having his homework marked by Sylvester Stallone.

This week we shoot down our enemies and accidentally run families off the road in the 1983 vehicular combat classic Spy Hunter! We reviewed it on the NES, but its initial release was in Arcades across the world. Sure, it managed to stay in the top 5 arcade games in America for 3 years running, but nearly FORTY years later is the classic Interceptor car still worth getting into? Before getting to the game, we shift gears and talk about Returnal, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and NBA 2K22. Plus, did Andrew just admit he believes Aliens have already visited us?! This is our final episode of our first season. This episode includes more of TJ and Tony's mother Kathy as well as my father Joel, reflecting on raising us little knuckleheads. Kathy explains the "Spy Hunter" nickname that we gave her and my father and I discuss his reasoning behind dragging Jimmy and I into a liquor store as 16 year olds (most parents probably would have done the same thing). It also includes some concluding remarks from they guys, summarizing our childhood in Sunnymede. If you need a half hour to tune out the world, laugh, or reminisce, this podcast is for you. The first season of MemeryMission is based in the neighborhood that I grew up in, Sunnymede in South Bend IN. You will definitely enjoy hearing stories of us growing up in our neighborhood. I can pretty much promise that you will question our sanity and shake your head in disbelief, but you will appreciate the creativity, dedication, and stamina that we had while running the streets of Sunnymede in the 1980's and 90's. Who doesn't love to play vehicular combat games? We can thank George Gomez for creating that genre with the debut of Spy Hunter in 1983. By taking an incredibly catchy tune and adding to the game play, a classic was born. Spy Hunter has a history worth telling, so put on your favorite three piece suit, grab a martini and queue the Peter Gunn theme. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thearcadefiles/message
