When men grow up without clear role models or a sense of purpose, they're left to navigate life without a map. The result is frustration, uncertainty, and a quiet struggle to figure out where they fit in a world that often tells them they're either too much or not enough. Strength isn't about aggression, and confidence isn't about dominance—real masculinity comes from knowing who you are and standing firm in it. Reclaiming that means tuning out the noise, finding mentors who challenge and support growth, and building a life rooted in discipline, integrity, and self-respect.Adam Allred, an entrepreneur, speaker, and social media influencer, is known for his candid take on masculinity and personal growth. Raised in a military family, his adaptability and communication skills helped him build multiple businesses, including a garbage company he sold for $3.5 million. Today, he shares insights on the challenges modern men face, reflecting on his experiences in door-to-door sales, business success, and navigating relationships. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond!Quotes: “Life isn't happening to you, it's happening for you. Whatever happens is a blessing.” – Adam Allred“Weakness cannot exist in a power evolving universe, and so there's no place for weakness here. Complacency is death.” – Adam Allred“The greatest threat right now to society is weak masculinity, and we have to own that. We can't blame it on women. We can't blame it on our problems. This is a man issue.” – Adam Allred“The default setting of a human being is to seek challenges and tackle hard things. When they started walking, no one had to encourage them—they just went for it. They'd fall, get back up, and keep going.” – Matt BeaudreauTakeaways:Commit to never quitting when facing challenges, using setbacks as opportunities to develop personal character and resilience.Practice switching between different "masculinity hats" by being intentional about your energy and approach in various life roles (husband, father, entrepreneur).Identify and challenge societal programming that limits your potential, focusing on continuous self-improvement and authentic personal growth.Have honest, open conversations with your children about real-world challenges, supporting their individual passions without forcing conformity.Set clear boundaries in relationships, understanding that respect matters more than being "nice" - be willing to walk away if core values are consistently disrespected. Conclusion:Real masculinity isn't defined by meeting outside expectations but by having the courage to grow, stand by one's principles, and contribute to others without losing a sense of identity. It requires discipline, accountability, and the strength to make difficult but necessary choices. A man who respects himself and his values doesn't seek approval—he builds a life rooted in purpose and conviction. In the end, true strength comes not from dominance or validation, but from the quiet confidence of knowing who you are and what you stand for.

In this episode, the dogs talk about what it means to sacramentalize all things. They discuss the tendency to separate "holy" things from seemingly unholy things (1:30) and the opposing belief that all things are restored in Christ (4:00). Mike brings up his experience serving at Life Teen retreats (9:55), Rob shares what was so impactful about visiting the Martin home in France (11:20), and Connor tells about a recent trip to the doctor (13:10). They all discuss being freed, as priests, to focus on loving people, not just trying to save them (21:30). Also, they reminisce about that time Mike got scabies (28:25). Quotes: “Life with God is not an obligation, but it's really a gift.” (Mike, 9:10) “The retreat actually is reality; what we want to do is integrate the rest of your life into that relationship, into that experience.” (Mike, 10:30) “Every room in their home was clearly about being together.” (Rob about the Martin home, 12:15) “I want to bring Christ into that world. That's what the invitation is, bring all of that suffering into Jesus. Even that is not outside of his power and grace.” (Mike, 20:40) “I just get to love people. That's my whole job.” (Mike, 21:00) “Jesus says 'behold I make all things new', not 'behold I make new things'.” (Connor quoting Schmemann, 22:05) "Nothing is wasted. It's all ingredients somehow in this ultimate project of joy.” (Connor, 23:20) “He has assumed all of our humanity and now we donate our humanity to him to become transfigured and glorified.” (Connor, 23:36) “I'm not on to save people, I'm on to love people.” (Rob quoting Mike, 25:29) "The Christian is to the world what the soul is to the body." (letter to Diognetus, 35:10) “My prerogative is to treat everyone with equal love and equal dignity.” (Mike, 38:20) Media Mentions: Ned SchneeblySchool of Rock (2003)C.S. Key Takeaways • Be obsessed with the process of getting better. What are you doing today to improve yourself? • Instead of comparing your chapter 1 to someone else's chapter 20, look at what it is about them that you admire. What actionable steps did they take to get to where they are and what steps can you take to get a similar outcome? • You are your only true competition. Compete with yourself every day to better yourself, consistently show up, and don't settle. How do you challenge yourself to improve a little bit every day? In today's episode Dr. Andrew talks with Jake Thompson, keynote speaker and fractional performance coach about reaching your full potential by competing with yourself every day to get better. After college, Jake found himself with an MBA in Sports Business and no job prospects. Instead of just settling for an average life, he started to work freelance and realized that growth was all about looking for opportunities and consistently putting the work in. He created an apparel business and began selling shirts to get out the message of competing every day. Then, in 2014 he was invited to speak at an HR event at the Texas Children's Hospital in Houston and found that he had a gift for public speaking and teaching. Oftentimes people are impatient and think that they will reach a certain goal immediately. When they don't get there fast enough, they give up. Others never even try, because they spend too much time comparing themselves to people who had completely different circumstances than them. Change your mindset by realizing that you are only competing with yourself. When you are working alongside other high achievers, draw your motivation from not wanting to be them, but wanting to improve yourself to be more like the aspects of them that you admire. Figure out what success means to you and learn to love the process of showing up consistently and putting in the work over time. If you do not seek to better yourself every day, you will end up settling for whatever life gives you and may have a lot of regrets in the long run. Compete every day with yourself to improve and get closer to the successful life you desire. Quotes • “Life is about consistently just showing up.” (10:39-10:43 | Jake) • “When you're forced to go against somebody, or compete alongside somebody that has a high standard of excellence, it forces you to continually raise your game if you want to win.” (12:53-13:03 | Jake) • “Attitude, actions, effort, and focus are 100% in your control every day.” (17:15-17:20 | Jake) • “The people that are more consistent are the ones that have learned to fall in love with the work and the process, because the process is the only thing you control.” (23:31-23:38 | Jake) • “A single choice by itself may or may not do much. Thousands and thousands of choices that build on top of each other, that's how you create an epic life.” (29:33-29:42 | Jake) Links Connect with Jake Thompson: Website | JakeAThompson.com LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakethompsonspeaks Instagram | jakethompsonspeaks Compete Every Day | CompeteEveryDay.com Connect with Physio Room: Website | https://physioroomco.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/dr.andrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Self worth and self care shouldn't be words we throw around lightly. They aren't just concepts we can discuss at lunch with the girls and then forget about when we are back at the office. So today, I want to share some breakthroughs I've had in my own life once self worth and self care became actions, not words. Like me, you may have experienced trauma and believe it was something you did or deserved. It was not your fault. Today, I will share some fundamental principles that motivate you to recognize your self worth and lead you to Self Care. In this episode: [00:00] Recognizing the value of understanding self worth and self care. [01:00] How trauma plays a role in how you see yourself. [04:42] Going outside your comfort zone and the gems from the Holistic Psychologist. [08:00] Self acceptance and living out self care. [09:57] Jessica leaves us with thoughts to ponder. Key Takeaways: Negative self-talk is a downward spiral. Self worth, Self care and Self acceptance will never be achieved when we listen to our negative selves. Women often think they won't accomplish their goals at the office and home if they take time for meals, rest, and exercise, when, in fact, the exact opposite is true. Running a business should not equate to running yourself ragged. Instead, intelligent business women take care of themselves to be the best operator, coaches, or practitioners they can be. Quotes: “Life gets infinitely more peaceful when you understand people can only support you at the level they can support themselves. It's powerful when we think about past trauma and understand that people are often doing the best they can with what they have.” - Jessica Fearnley “I am worthy of love and care, and I also cannot serve my clients, my family, or my wider audience if I'm not putting the maximum amount of gas in the tank daily. It might be food, rest, movement, but it's also about applying boundaries in life and work.” - Jessica Fearnley Useful Links Get in touch with Jessica to discuss your consulting business Jessica's LinkedIn Jessica Fearnley - Instagram

You see, many of us forget to foster the most important relationship there is, the one we have with ourselves. We can't neglect that relationship and expect to be happy or fulfilled in our lives. Just like everything that matters, we need to put in the work and make the efforts needed to foster and grow that bond we have with our inner selves. “Easier said than done,” you might think. And the truth is, you might actually be right… Which is why James will be sharing his tips with you today so you can learn to build that relationship and nurture it through self-love and resilience. Are you ready? Let's dive in! In This Episode: [00:00] Introduction [01:02] We should always strive to be better, and here's how we can achieve that [04:27] The one person who matters most is… [05:33] It's time to reflect back on your past mentors who have changed your life [11:32] Why self-belief matters! [17:11] Sharing practical tips you can use to learn to believe in yourself more [25:40] There's no such thing as a “too small” step forward, so keep moving forward! Quotes: “Life is full of obstacles, right? There will be plenty of obstacles as you work towards your goals, so don't be one of them.” – James Williams “We want to always try and improve upon what we've been doing. And one way to do that is to really look back and figure out what worked before and what we can improve now.” – James Williams “As we go forward in our life, there's one voice that we are going to be hearing every day. There's one person that we're going to spend more time with than anyone else. Speaking in public is never easy, and it doesn't always come naturally for everyone. Yet, it is a skill that is required in almost every discipline, whether you wish to become a public keynote speaker, promote your work and your business on social media, or do something as simple as succeeding in a job interview. That's what mindset is about, and there are strategies that allow us to gain that mindset.” -Vera Jones. “True leadership is not about what you can get other people to do. It's about understanding what you can do for your team to become the best they can be.” -Vera Jones. “If you want to be a leader, you need to stay with the times. Just as the styles of clothes and hairstyles change with the times, so has to do our leadership style.” -Vera Jones. “If you want to become a great speaker, you shouldn't focus on yourself. “Let this be the year you learn what you need to learn to have what you want in your relationships,” entreats host Alejandra. The new year is an event full of energy, momentum, celebration, and reflection. To take advantage of this special time, Alejandra encourages us to direct our awareness towards our relationships and reflect on how we would like them to transform in the new year. Before entering a relationship, whether romantic or platonic, we must reflect on how we would like to be in that dynamic. Although we may understand more about how we would like others to act, we must take accountability for how we contribute to our relationship experience. To continue our ongoing journey with mindful communication, Alejandra suggests creating a list of the communication skills and capacities we would like to work on for the types of relationships we want. The new year is a wonderful time to set intentions toward your relationships. Learn more about determining how you would like to be in your relationships, Alejandra's experience with relationship transformation, and her tools for learning, developing, and refining our communication capabilities. Quotes • “Life is a series of cycles and seasons.” (1:44-1:46 | Alejandra) • “The new year is a cycle that renews for the whole world.” (2:36-2:40 | Alejandra) • “I started to experience the kinds of relationships that were not just pleasant or nice, but that also were nourishing and fulfilling.” (6:49-6:59 | Alejandra) • “Each new year gives us the opportunity to learn, to develop, or refine new communication tools, new communication skills and capacities, and new communication intentions.” (10:05-10:18 | Alejandra) • “Let this be the year you learn what you need to learn to have what you want in your relationships.” (10:05-10:18 | Alejandra) Links To listen to Language Alchemy episode 24, visit: https://www.languagealchemy.com/podcasts/language-alchemy-podcast/episodes/2147652632 To listen to Language Alchemy episode 25, visit: https://www.languagealchemy.com/podcasts/language-alchemy-podcast/episodes/2147661663 To join the newsletter, visit: https://www.languagealchemy.com/ To learn about the 3 options to transform your communication and relationships, visit: https://www.languagealchemy.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
In this episode of Come Rain or Shine, Adam Mastroianni, a postdoctoral research scholar at Columbia Business School, joins the show to discuss the relationship between intelligence and happiness. In the past hundred years, there have been many efforts to measure intelligence. More recently, new tests have discerned the multiple types of intelligence including the performance tendencies of subject matter experts. However, as Adam explains, there's also a general intelligible that can capture a person's ability to define and solve problems. While a one-size, fit-all metric is hard to quantify, what is clear is the correlation difference between problem and dilemma with intelligence and happiness. As Adam notes, problems involve optimal solutions, but dilemmas often lack a clear right or wrong, a principle evident in the contrast of emotional and intellectual responses. Although the psychological drivers of happiness are highly variable, the empirical data behind general intelligence is more concrete. Therefore, one can never assume a more successful person on paper is automatically happier. “Sometimes we use the Mother-Guilt as an excuse, but there's no reason why we can't have it all. Like, there really isn't a reason why we can't have it all. And to be able to do business and what we want to do in our life well, and be able to be beautiful mum's as well. And I think it's great to be able to show your kids that you are doing something that is purposeful in life and for them to see that, to see you live a life of passion.” Rebecca Miller is a coach, mentor, speaker, multiple business owner, retreat host and Mumma of 3 beautiful children Lockie, Toby and Izzy, her driving force behind everything she does. Rebecca contagious think big attitude accompanied by her down to earth personality has propelled her inspiring journey of leadership since starting out as a solo therapist in her home town of Parkes to building her empire of 3 skin and beauty Clinics in 3 locations (LA BELLA MEDISPA) and a team of over 25 therapist. Rebecca wanted to bring world class treatment modalities and skin care to regional and rural women, to create a space for these women to visit to not just have the best treatment and services but to create a space where they could be nurtured and leave feeling more self love and confident. Rebecca is only getting started on her quest to help women love themselves for them to see everything they need is inside them to find their joy and happiness and live a life by design not by default and this all starts by self love…. As women we can have it all purposeful work and family and do both really well Her definition of Self Love is… I used to think it was a bubble bath and having a facial and yes, they're acts of self-love. But there is so much more to self-love. It's truly loving yourself… the good, the bad and the ugly, and having a level of acceptance of every part of you. To really have forgiveness and not looking back in anger. Look to the future with aspirations and live more in the moment. It is knowing we are so worthy of a beautiful life and we can create it with awareness, acceptance, trust self-esteem and self-care. The more I love, I care, I accept and the more awareness that I have that I can be the mum, a better wife business owner and can show up as a better human. Self-love is everything. The more we can love ourselves the more we can love others. Her favourite quote is: Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back. Self-love is everything A lot of women do not make time for themselves Fill your own cup first Her baby is her reason not her excuse Whatever you want, do it well Know that things happen for you not to you Language is so powerful We are manifesting our life through the language we use Be conscious of blaming others There's always a silver lining in every situation It's so easy to sit in victim mentality Look at life with a different perspective Ask good questions Family are probably the people who trigger us the quickest Just show more love Until we give it meaning we may see the victim mentality Have more awareness Thought process is so important Be, have, create It's ok to say no, create beautiful boundaries Live a more conscious life SELF LOVE PODCAST SPONSOR LINKS THANKYOU FOR LISTENING… If you would like to share your feedback on this podcast please head to my Facebook and Instagram pages below. I know that we're all struggling just to get to everything that needs to be completed each day, and given that I have a number of people wondering how I ‘get so much done', today I will be sharing my work flow with you all. Believe me, no one knows better than me that no one can do it all, but hopefully some of the habits I have acquired and lessons I have learned over the years will resonate with you today. I'll share with you how not overscheduling, figuring out areas of weakness and addressing them, and becoming aware of your monthly energy flow can all have positive impacts. We'll also explore my monthly, weekly, and daily routines, and look at the importance of rest, wise time investments, and digital uncluttering. Like I said, I know I can't do it all, and I don't claim to be able to, but what I can do is share with you some of the steps I take to help ensure that all the most important aspects of my life and my work are addressed as fully and effectively as possible. The Finer Details of This Episode: · We don't overschedule · Figure out your vulnerabilities and address them · My time of greatest creative energy is the two weeks following the start of menstruation each month · On Sundays I limit communications and totally rest · My day off starts at 5:31 p.m. each Saturday · On Mondays I am recharged and full of energy again · I get up at 3:30-4:30 a.m. for a run and to start work · I do the hard thing first each day in the dark · I take 15-20 minute power naps to recharge · Make wise time investments · Digital uncluttering is key – only touch everything once Quotes: “Life is a four burner stove. A couple of pots are simmering, there's always a pot that's boiling…cleaning, definitely for me, is a simmering pot.” “My workflow is based on my menstrual cycle.” “The best work is done in the dark.” “I am the Queen of the Power Nap.” “We can't underestimate the value of rest and how it re-charges.” “Where can you make those better investments in time?” “If it's not your skillset, try to find somebody for whom it is their skillset.” Links: Jamie's homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/ Oh Crap! Elise Knox is a life and wellness coach and a former middle school teacher. With two children of her own, Elise is helping parents and preteen/teen girls get through this challenging time with more connection and ease. Parents might feel like they never have any time to themselves and that they're pretty much living in survival mode to keep their teens healthy and well. However, this leads to burn out and not showing up as the best parent you can be. In this episode, Elise shares how to make time for yourself and take care of your needs while going through the different stages of parenthood. Key Takeaways Parents often feel like they have no time to themselves. What are some of the ways you can get reconnected with yourself? After 5 years of being jolted awake to serve her kids, Elise realized she needed to take control. What is Elise's morning practice? How do you become more responsive to your team as opposed to reactive? Ed noticed himself reacting in the moment instead of taking a breathe and processing his teenager's request. You don't always need to give your answer right then and there. How much should you share with your teen? What do you need? Turns out this question is a very challenging one to answer! What do you do if you express your needs, and your partner gets upset? Under each uncomfortable feeling there's an unmet need. Remember, it's a different world that your teens are growing up in today. What do you do if your teen only wants to connect digitally? Welcome to what I'm calling "Mentor Month," a tribute to one of my most influential mentors Sean Adams who passed away in September 2017. In this episode, I talk about the type of relationship Sean and I shared, give an example of one of his most powerful lessons, and wrap things up with one of Sean's favorite sayings given to me by his best friend Mike "Hardball" Hardge. Eddie has spent most of his life sober, though he drifted from the rooms more than once, about 20 yrs ago he found his way back and has since gotten into the middle of the fellowship. The joy Eddie has today is palpable—for this old timer, the promises have and continue, to come true.Quotes“Life is really, really good for me . . . things are good, and they're only good because those kids back in 1983 would not let me skip out on this gift, they dragged me into those meetings and I'm forever grateful to them.” “Happiness is a temporary state of mind . . . joy is what I aspire to, and it's what I find when I work with others and do the kind of things that take me out of self.”
Episode 013 is all about the other dark side of trauma. What happens when trauma becomes our trip up? Hannah talks about the responsibility we hold in our healing journey after we have faced trauma. Negating this responsibility puts us at risk of idolizing our trauma and perpetually dwelling in it and tripping over it. Just one touch from Jesus healed the woman with the issue of blood. It was her faith despite her past that made her whole. This same healing is available to us, should we reach for it. It won't be easy, but with God, ALL things are possible. It is God's grace in the wilderness that will carry us. Don't miss out on part 1 of this 2-part series! In this episode: The lies of trauma The enemy's lies that trap us in trauma God's truth that crushes those lies Identifying how we graduate from the pain to perpetually abiding in the pit of trauma, and hence, that trauma becoming our trip up. The dangers of paralysis by analysis Becoming toxic and blame shifting And more! Quotes: “Life does not end and life does not have to end because of trauma.” “Just one touch. One word. From God almighty will heal. One touch will erase the past. There is grace in the wilderness.” “Trauma becomes our trip up when and only when it becomes an IDOL.” “We overcome the ramifications of trauma because of the grace of God.” References Mentioned: Episode 011 (December 2021) Related Blog Post: When Trauma becomes your Trip Up Scriptures: Matthew 19:26 Mark 5:24-34 Psalm 27:14 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Isaiah 61:3 Psalm 103:14 Psalm 30:5 Connect with me! “We have to remember that we borrow our people from their lives,” explains Charlotte Lockhart, founder and CEO of 4 Day Week Global, a not-for-profit community promoting the benefits of a productivity-focused and reduced-hour workplace. In today's episode of Problem Performers, Charlotte discusses how reducing the work week actually increases productivity. Charlotte's 4 Day Week Global community focuses on bringing pilot programs into businesses to demonstrate the effectiveness of a reduced work schedule. The 40-hour work week was designed at a time when life looked very different for most employees. With the increased connectivity and workloads of modern life, it is no longer a well-balanced solution for most businesses. By reducing the length of the work week, business owners can reduce stress and burnout levels in their employees, and increase their efficiency as a result. Tune into this week's episode of Problem Performers for a conversation with Charlotte Lockhart and host Rebecca Weaver about the impact a reduced work week could have on your business, and how to broach the idea with your boss. Learn more about Charlotte's pilot program and the ways businesses can adapt to better value their employees' time. Quotes • “Life is shorter than you might think, often, and when I mean that it's not just your physical life, but we turn around and in the blink of an eye our work life is gone.” (04:21-04:32) • “In the end, what we're talking about when we're talking about the four-day work week or some form of reduced-hour work week is we're talking about rebalancing the place that work has in our lives. If we think about it, when we first had the 40-hour work week…our society was constructed differently. We didn't have laptops and cellphones, and generally it was just dad that went to work, and he was generally home for family meals, and mum did the children and the community and charity stuff.” (05:44-06:28) • “Work's place in our lives has gotten out of proportion to where it should have been, even with the 40-hour week. So the conversation we're having with people is actually, how do we rebalance that life for ourselves?” (06:54-07:07) • “When I'm talking to employers I say, ‘We have to remember that we borrow our people from their lives'....If you take that attitude to your employment and into your environment, then actually you've got to think, ‘Okay, so if the bit of someone's life that I have them for is to give me a productive outcome, then how can I do that with them that means that they can have more time away from work.” (07:11-07:50) • “At its heart, our program is a productivity-gaining program. We say to people ‘you need to join together with your people to find ways to do what your business does in less time. How you do that really will be up to the business, your people, and your customers'...It's about management and business owners recognizing that they're in partnership with their employees.” And when you treat that relationship as a partnership and respect each other in a partnership-style role, you'll actually drive things better. And that's what all the successful companies do.” (08:01-08:48) • “We've been talking about health and safety in the workplace for so long now, but really, it's just been safety. And so the pandemic has given us a renewed focus on how we can work. Who'd have thought that you can run your business from home?” (11:08-11:29) • “The people are choosing their workplace, not the other way around. And this is a significant shift, and it's global.” (13:06-13:17) • “Even though in our employment contracts it says ‘you will work these days, and you will work these hours, and we'll give you this amount of time off,' even though our employment contracts largely are around time, what we're really employing people to do is an output. An outcome. We're looking for what you're going to give me, and what's your productive outcome. So what we're doing is we're shifting from measuring time to valuing time.” (18:47-19:18) • “Leadership's job in (adopting a 4-day week) is to decide to do it. And then there's a full stop. Because actually, the only people who can truly work out how to make this a success are your team…The companies that have either look at this and then not run a pilot, or have started it and then stopped doing it, all got to that position because the C-suite got in the way.” (21:00-21:51) • “In your workforce at any time, between one in four and one in five [people] in your workforce have a workplace stress or mental health issue. And that's probably greater with all of us coping with life post-pandemic…So those people are already not performing to a very high standard, because you just can't. And we know that burnout rates are skyrocketing, and unprecedented. And of course, somebody that's leading up to a burnout looks like they're hyperproductive because there's a bit of a manic phase that goes in before burnout…You only know you're burning out when you've burnt out.” (23:14-24:05) • “If you give (employees) more time to recover and more time to look after themselves, more time to eat well and exercise and engage with community, and engage with all of the things that top us up whether it be physically or emotionally or mentally, then they will perform better for you in the time that they are with you. And so by giving people, for example, Wednesday off, then you are going to get better productivity out of them for the rest of the time.” (24:40-25:14) • “You run a reduced-hour 4 day week pilot in your business, you're going to get a more productive business, more profitable business, and a happier workforce, and it won't have cost you a cent. So it's kind of like a win-win.” (28:47-29:03) Links https://www.linkedin.com/in/charlottelockhartnz/ www.4dayweek.com Connect with an HRuprise coach at https://www.hruprise.com/ Follow us on social media: • Twitter: https://twitter.com/hruprise • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hruprise/ • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRuprise/ • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hruprise/
In this fun episode of The Nick Lugo Show, Jeremy Sherman answers this question: can you calculate your chances of life success? He's a super fun guy, here to answer some serious questions. I loved this episode. In other words how mattering emerged from matter, how the struggle for existence emerged from aimless chemistry. He's close collaborator for 25 years with Harvard/Berkeley neuroscientist/biological anthropologist, Terrence Deacon. He's the author of Neither Ghost nor Machine: The Emergence and Nature of Selves. He is also the host of several podcasts, namely “What's up with A**holes,” where he defines his new field of research, psychopractology (if you don't get the joke, look it up). He's reached over 15 million people in his writing and audio. Here are some of his quirks: A pioneer psychoproctologist – 25 years working to explaining total jerks and how to stop them without becoming one. A one-time elected elder on the world's largest hippy commune. A shamelessly honest introspeculator, who uses funny personal examples to illustrate and explain the stuff we all do. Inspired by the story of Beck Weathers, a Dallas pathologist whose harrowing experience on Mount Everest led to profound change, McKay explores the transformative power of resilience, reflection, and personal growth in today's episode. He interweaves Beck's gripping journey with inspiring tales and scriptural insights, emphasizing themes of obsession, identity, and the importance of taking a “halftime” moment to confront apparent failures and make any necessary adjustments for the future.McKay traces Beck's path from battling depression and an obsessive passion for climbing to surviving a near-fatal ordeal on Everest. His miraculous survival and personal transformation highlight the essence of failing forward and finding inner peace, much like a team reassessing and strategizing at halftime. Featuring other stories such as missed basketball opportunities, resilience in the Miss USA pageant, and Esther's biblical story, McKay underscores the significance of undertaking a halftime reflection and moving on to embrace one's true identity, learn from failures, and leverage spiritual insights to navigate life's challenges.Episode Highlights:Beck Weathers' remarkable journeyInsights on embracing failure and using it as a stepping stone to success.Inspiring stories illustrating the importance of embracing challenges and staying true to one's identityThe importance of embracing one's true identity through scriptural references and personal faith.Practical tools and perspectives for overcoming challenges and making pivotal changes in life. The infinite worth of individuals and their potential for positive change and impact.Quotes:"Life is made up of a series of attempts and failures.""Successful people learn how to fail forward, to learn from their failures in a healthy way.""You are of immense worth. Your potential is endless.""Your potential to make a difference in this world and to other people for good is unlimited.""Don't wait for things to be perfect. Be mediocre with all you have.
