Kali relies on her trach and feeding tube for life. And as most parents with children who are dependent on life-sustaining equipment, Falesha both loves and resents it. Our children would not be alive today without them, and yet we still can feel annoyed and resentful towards the hassle and fears they bring. In this fun episode, Falesha advises NICU parents to take training seriously, shares both the how-to and the benefits of traveling with equipment in tow, and laughs at the fact that we as parents are dependent on the machines too, but at more of an emotional level. When your child's development or health take a turn for the worse, its totally logical for the parents to struggle. Apathy, sadness, overwhelm, darkness, most parents have experienced this reaction at one time or another. But what about when their health takes a turn for the better? What about dropping off therapies and specialists? It seems like it would be a really straightforward response—happiness, relief, gratitude. And yet, as we've been receiving good news for our son, my brain has responded in confusing ways—relief, apathy, gratitude, darkness. Is something wrong with me? No, I'm beginning to realize this is a pretty common thing. In this episode, I share the complex emotions I've experienced as Kimball's health has been on the up, and the remarkable story of receiving nothing short of miraculous healing which spent me into a spiral. Raising a child has never been easy. Raising a strong confident child, during a pandemic, is even harder. To learn how this is possible, I sit down with Dr. Louise Metcalf to discuss ways to look after our children's wellbeing. We specifically talk about how we can teach our children to be more resilient and adaptable, so they can enjoy life as kids while becoming more eager to face the challenges of life growing up. We discuss the definition of resilience and adaptability, the makings of a strong and confident child and, how we help our kids discover their strengths and find ways to use them. Dr Louise shares how we can manage anxiety in our kids particularly during the COVID pandemic. Dr Louise says “Tell your kids what you like about them as a person – it's about recognising self-worth.” Her advice to parents and carers is to slow down, practice relaxation and self-care, meditate, teach your kids how to meditate and remember to just stop and breathe. We discuss some of the reasons we're observing these mental health issues in kids nowadays and how, after years of supporting children with anxiety and mental wellbeing, Dr Louise had the idea for a robot that can help kids with their anxiety. It came in the form of an app called ‘Gheorg'. The Friendly Robot empowers children with emotional intelligence and mental wellbeing. ‘Build a village around your kids, the village should be quite big' says Dr Louise ‘Gheorg can be part of that village.' So, sit back and enjoy this episode of the Chatabout Children Podcast with Sonia Bestulic as she interviews Dr Louise Metcalf. In this message, I discuss four questions in relation to the Gospel: 1. What is our natural condition as humans? 2. How should we see lost people? 3. How are we Saved? 4. When are We Saved? #TheGospel #Apologetics #GraceOfGod #Christianity The key verses in my message are Ephesians 2:1-10, Titus 3:1-3, Matthew 19:23-26, Jonah chapter 4, Romans 3:23, 6:23, 10:9, 10:17. The central concept I wanted to focus on in this message is the common depravity of mankind when they are lost and without Christ. In order to understand the Gospel, we must recognize that all people, without Christ, are lost, desperate, and dead in their transgressions. Only through the power of Jesus can anyone dead spirit be raised to newness of life. This week, Miguel spoke to Dr. Johanna Mellis, Professor of World History at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and one of the End of Sport Podcast co-hosts (@EndofSportPod). Dr. Mellis's research focuses on the interactions between Hungarian athletes, socialist sport leaders, and the International Olympic Committee as a microcosm of relations between society, the socialist state, and international organizations during the Cold War. Dr. Mellis was also a Division I swimmer at the College of Charleston from 2004-2008 and coached swimming for seven years. First, Miguel asked Johanna how she became the third co-host of the End of Sport podcast and how her experience as a Division 1 Athlete shaped her career in Academia. Additionally, Miguel and Johanna discuss her article, From Defectors to Cooperator: The Impact of 1956 on Athletes, Sport Leaders, and Sport Policy in Socialist Hungary. Finally, Miguel and Johanna discuss Trevor Bauer, anti-blackness, and white supremacy in Swimming, the Pandemic Tokyo Olympics, Rachel Nichols, and more!
