Welcome to another Cinema Sounds & Secrets Tribute episode! This week Janet, John, (and Pen) discuss the life and career of an incredible American film director, producer, and actor. Once called “The Pope of Pop Cinema” and “The King of Cult” this massive talent also assisted in jumpstarting many careers of the actors and directors we know and love… It's Roger Corman! While he was an innovator and pioneer in the world of independent film, Corman actually studied engineering at Stanford before discovering his passion for movies. Many of his films would go on to achieve cult following status including A Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Intruder (1962), X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes (1963), The Wild Angels (1966), and The Trip (1967). For the first time in nearly a century, we wake up in the morning to a world without Roger Corman in it. In addition to reshaping the face of American cinema for generations, he also directed a few movies. We spend as much time as we can discussing 1963's X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes and 1959's A Bucket of Blood before we can hold back no longer and gush about how awesome Dick Miller is. Is it accurate to describe X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes as "Cyclops but addicted to drugs?" Not entirely, but it's a more accurate description than calling the pre-Haunted Castle Roger Corman flick "Lovecraftian." Featuring Ray Milland as a man of science who gets more than he bargained for when he experiments on his own eyes, this low-budget, unofficial Invisible Man adaptation could greatly benefit from a contemporary update.  Check out The Cast of Cthulhu on Facebook or Twitter and email any questions or comments to moviesofmadness@gmail.com.

So you get your X-Ray Vision but the truth is that after a week of staring at everyone's boobs and dongs nudity fails to do anything for you anymore. What are you going to use it for? Cheating at cards? Curing the sick? Hiding in a dingy Long Beach boardwalk doing insult comedy while dressed lake a blindfolded Pharaoh? If you said all three you might be Dr. James Xavier, star of Roger Corman's 1963 classic X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes. On the latest episode of Tracks of the Damned we take a look at a pivotal AIP sci-fi shocker and ask the big questions like: How did this movie change the career of Roger Corman? What classic novel does it resemble? And is that really any way to test a monkey? All this and more! Pluck em out! 0:00 - 4:35 - Intro 4:36 - 1:24:40 - Commentary 1:24:41 - 1:30:00 - Outro

Due to technical issues, this weeks episode has been lost to the ether and is unrecoverable. To sum it up- ThanksKilling 3- hurt everyone except Craig, who has promised to get his brain scanned just in case it's a sign of some deeper issue. X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes- a great film in the Corman catalog that everyone should check out sometime. Just don't be too sad that the King ending isn't real. It got Anna's endorsement for the best film of the week. Dora and the Lost City of Gold- A nice joyful surprise for everyone. The cast is good, Isabela Merced is a joy, the jokes mostly land. A rare film that is appealing to all and far better than it has any right to be. It won the week by swiping Dave, Tyler, and Craig's votes.     Until next week's four pack of super pain caps off Masochist May, enjoy this episode from the long long ago where we look at The Manson Family, The Skin I Live In, and Phantom of the Paradise. It's not exactly "The Lost Weekend", but Oscar-winner Ray Milland does pretty well for himself by this low-budget but intriguingly Promethean 1963 sci-fi outing from Roger Corman, which anticipates the alternate reality concepts of his later "The Trip". Of course the trailer is more interested in the "X-ray specs" aspects of the idea, like seeing through women's clothes!

Dimension X was first heard on NBC April 8, 1950, and ran until September 29, 1951. Strange that so little good science fiction came out of radio; they seem ideally compatible, both relying heavily on imagination. Some fine isolated science fiction stories were developed on the great anthology shows, Suspense and Escape. But until the premiere of Dimension X -- a full two decades after network radio was established -- there were no major science fiction series of broad appeal to adults. This show dramatized the work of such young writers as Ray Bradbury, Robert (Psycho) Bloch, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Kurt Vonnegut. In-house script writer was Ernest Kinoy, who adapted the master works and contributed occasional storied of his own. Dimension X was a very effective demonstration of what could be done with science fiction on the air. It came so late that nobody cared, but some of the stories stand as classics of the medium.Text From the Old Time Radio Researcher's Group
