Get to know the hands, head, and heart behind award-winning fine artist and oil painter Anna Rose Bain, whose breathtaking figurative works and luminous portraiture capture peaceful moments of human connection. A Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, Anna's work has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur and American Art Collector and exhibited in some of the most esteemed galleries and competitions in the country. In this episode, she shares how global experiences, perseverance, and teaching workshops have shaped her artistic journey—from studying under the North Light in Florence, Italy, to painting elephants in the African wilderness. She reveals how leading workshops has not only refined her skills but also deepened her understanding of art. Motherhood, too, has played a profound role in her growth. The challenges of balancing art and family life sharpened her business, strengthened her faith, and ultimately made her a better artist—especially through painting her son. Blending classical techniques with the immediacy of alla prima, she draws inspiration from masters like Richard Schmid and John Singer Sargent while forging her own artistic voice. In this engaging conversation, Phil and Eugene Banks explore the profound impact of education, the journey of becoming an educator, and the art of teaching. They discuss the importance of connection, positive reinforcement, and authentic engagement in the classroom, emphasizing that teaching is not just about content but about the context and relationships built with students. Eugene shares his personal journey into education, highlighting the challenges and triumphs he faced along the way, and the strategies he employs to foster a dynamic learning environment. They also explore the importance of embracing mistakes in education, setting clear expectations, and fostering a growth mindset among students. Eugene shares his teaching strategies, including the 'We Do' approach, which emphasizes collaborative learning. They discuss the need to challenge traditional educational practices and the significance of inspiring young minds through literature. Eugene also highlights the urgency of pursuing dreams and the impact of his books aimed at empowering young black children. Positive reinforcement can significantly impact student engagement. Finding your teacher voice takes time and experience. Education requires a long-term commitment to improvement. Teaching is an art form that evolves with practice. Authenticity in teaching resonates with students. Student voice should dominate over teacher voice in the classroom. Engagement strategies are crucial for maintaining student focus. Mistakes in teaching are opportunities for growth. Building relationships with students enhances the learning experience. Mistakes are part of the learning journey. Setting clear expectations minimizes room for error. The 'We Do' strategy encourages collaborative problem-solving. Facilitators guide students rather than dictate learning. Growth mindset is essential for overcoming challenges. Education should prepare students for real-life situations. Rewards should be earned, not given for mere participation. Challenging traditional practices can enhance learning. Books can inspire and empower young minds. Acting with urgency can lead to fulfilling dreams. Lynda Shephard shares a life's work in art, its value in education and a happy life. Lidiya Cherneva explains various types of intelligence. Emma Baxley talks about doubly gifted children and how to help them. This week on The Lisa Burke Show, Sasha Kehoe reflects on the news week that was: - Chat GPT causes concern over future jobs. Will it mean creatives have to become more creative about their work? - Man died in stabbing incident at football pitch in Esch-sur-Alzette - Home working and cross-border rights under further discussion - Future of the Luxembourgish language? - Oscar nominations for Luxembourg - Vicky Kreips 'Corsage' film out of the running? - Man lost at sea for 28 days saved by sauce! - Julian Sands still missing in the Californian mountains. Art and Education Lynda Shephard has travelled the world post graduation from Cambridge in Art History and Education. She founded the Relative Art Centre in Dubai in 1994 and has held several solo international exhibitions as a professional watercolourist. Here we discuss the role of art in education and in our lives. In Ancient Greek times the role of education was to endeavour to live a life of harmony and happiness. Nowadays education can feel like a treadmill of trying to achieve higher grades in certain subjects, with a constant crush on artistic endeavours. Why is art important? Can it help us think more creatively? Lynda talks about the range of artistic jobs available today, and to think about learning business acumen alongside art to succeed in selling one's work. Turner was a canny businessman and Picasso was the first artist to become a millionaire whilst still alive! Art is also used hugely in therapy and was used as such by Winston Churchill and Paul McCartney. Different types of Intelligence Lidiya Cherneva moved from Bulgaria to Cyprus and then onto the UK where she graduated from the University of Oxford. She tells us the circuitous route to get there, in order to study design and implementation of evidence-based behavioural Interventions through the lifespan. Lidiya went on to study Cognitive Behaviour therapy, mindfulness and positive thinking, and is now completing her master's degree in psychology with the University of Glasgow. Lidiya explains the seven types of intelligence as laid out by Howard Gardner and his colleagues: Logical-mathematical Linguistic Bodily-kinaesthetic Interpersonal Intrapersonal Spatial Music And so, somewhere in this range, we all have strengths. Nowadays it's often the intra and interpersonal skills that can lead to mental health issues. Without knowing how to understand one's own emotions, it's hard to connect to others. The good news is that due to neuroplasticity we can retrain our brain to improve with respect to most skills, despite out background, time in our mother's womb, and innate ability. Double Giftedness Our resident TikTok expert, Emma Baxley, is actually a qualified teacher with a specialism in helping 'doubly gifted' children. Those children who have ADD, ADHD, autism or one of a number of other 'gifts' and therefore think in a hugely different way. It requires a special teacher, a lot of support and one-on-one care to truly enrich such a child's life. This sort of support is currently not available in Luxembourg.
A discussion with performance poet, performer, and playwright [Amalia Ortiz](Amaliaortiz.net) who directs the theater arts program at [SAY Sí.](Saysi.org) SAY Sí is a year-round, long-term, tuition-free multidisciplinary arts program in San Antonio serving middle and high school students primarily at or below the poverty line. In this podcast, Ortiz talks about the work of SAY Sí in general and the theater program in particular. Ortiz discusses the program's emphasis on producing original theater and encouraging a practical application of the arts. The students learn all aspects of theater: they write the plays, cast them, direct them, create the costumes and scenery, do the sound and the lighting. They learn to work with their strengths, augment their weaknesses, and to come together as team. Ortiz also discusses creating theater in community and for community and the issues at the border for both the students and the teachers. Ortiz discusses her own work and the impact of growing up three miles from the border on her life and her art, her commitment to and love of performance poetry, her 2020 American Book Award for Oral Literature, and her latest book The Canción Cannibal Cabaret & Other Songs. Donald Hargrove's most recent collection of digital paintings "The Landscape of Origins" is an exquisite testimony to his connection to nature and the essence of life. From a young age, Donald Hargrove knew he wanted to be an artist. Born and raised in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia then), Donald's life was shaped by deep friendships with his neighbors, his love of the land, and the joy he first experienced at the Mzilikazi Art Centre. Most recently, he survived extraordinary surgeries that saved his life from a disease that took his right arm, shoulder girdle and major musculature on one side, and reconnected him with his love of art making during the intense lockdowns of Covid in Scotland. He is exhibiting again, and shares his journey of healing and creative discovery here with Julie.
