A country which is heavily import dependent for its crude oil supply to meets demand should have such aspirations, is it logical? In the latest episode of the EnergOnomics podcast, businessline's Richa Mishra speaks with Ellen R. Wald, President of Transversal Consulting, on India's goal to establish itself as a global refinery hub.  Drawing parallels with China's refinery strategy, Ellen emphasises the critical need for investment, and a customer base for such ventures.  Despite India relying heavily on crude oil imports, Ellen suggests that its economic structure has advantages over China's state-run model, potentially offering more profit for independent refiners.  India's closeness to energy-demanding regions like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Africa, along with the recent shift in European oil procurement away from Russia, provides a big market opportunity for Indian refined products.  Diplomacy plays a key role in the energy market. Ellen shares instances where strategic partnerships between governments and businesses have led to positive outcomes for both sides.  Listen in!

Global oil markets are starting 2022 with a number of factors that could make for another volatile year. OPEC is continuing its monthly supply increases but taking a cautious approach so far given uncertain demand. A return of Iran barrels is not a sure thing as the nuclear talks stretch into a second year. The US tapped the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in a big way at the end of last year, but that did little to soften prices. Russia-Ukraine tensions are at the forefront geopolitically, and they have potential to exacerbate European and global energy prices. We asked several oil market experts to weigh in on the same question: Will OPEC allow oil prices to reach $100/b in 2022? Brent crude hit 76 dollars a barrel on Thursday on the prospect of strengthening demand. Oil prices are increasing, even as OPEC and its allies consider boosting output over the next few months. Back in May 2020, the 24-nation group known as OPEC+ agreed to make historic output cuts of almost 10 million barrels per day. It slashed production as the coronavirus pandemic wiped out demand. The curbs were tapered to eight million barrels a day, in the last quarter of 2020. Ellen Wald joined us from Jacksonville, Florida. The Colonial fuel pipeline, shut down by a cyber attack since Friday, serves 45% of America's east coast. A regional state of emergency has been declared, allowing tanker drivers to work extra hours to get some fuel where it's needed – but will they be able to keep up with demand? We ask Ellen R Ward, president of Transversal Consulting. Is it a surprise that criminals were able to hack into the system running the most important fuel pipeline in the United States? A question for Algirde Pipikaite, cyber security expert at the World Economic Forum. Also in the programme, Mike Johnson takes a close look at Nigeria's electricity challenge, which means around 40% of the country having no access to official supplies. Plus, researchers have created a cricket bat made out of bamboo, rather than the traditional willow, which they say is cheaper and more sustainable. We hear more from Ben Tinkler-Davies of the University of Cambridge, who was on the research team. All this and more discussed with our two guests on opposite sides of the globe: Erin Delmore, political reporter in New York City and Patrick Barta, Asia Enterprise Editor for the Wall Street Journal, in Bangkok.

Elon's $420 a share bubble has burst: Why Tesla isn't going private anytime soon

Rational Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2018 25:10

Earlier this week, Elon Musk’s biggest fan in the investment world urged Tesla’s founder to stop his ideas of taking the company private. Catherine Wood of ARK Invest re-iterated her bullish earlier projections in an open letter on the money manager’s website where she reckons the company’s shares will be worth anything from $700 to $4,000 in five years. Musk, you may recall, threw any number of cats among Wall Street’s pigeons at the beginning of the month tweeting that he intended taking the company private at a price of $420 a share. After peaking fractionally below $380, the price has since fallen back to its current $320. Below the pre-tweet level and a long way from the “funding secured” price. So far, those who bet against Musk have been the big winners, with disclosed short sellers of Tesla stock making over $1bn in profit since his bombshell tweet. These cynics think Ms Wood’s valuations are a figment of an alternative reality. But where they do agree, although for different reasons, is that it’s very unlikely that Tesla will be going private. The main reason is that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, on which Musk is pinning his buyout hopes, doesn’t actually have the money to help him out - even if it wanted to pay $100 a share more than the current market price. The London Financial Times reported this morning that the Saudi Public Investment Fund has lined up a consortium of global banks to lend it $11bn simply to meet existing obligations. The PIF is quite clearly no white desert charger riding to Elon’s rescue… That’s the last bit of news Musk needs right now. Because a buyout by the Saudis was the only elegant way out of some very serious legal consequences of his ill advised tweet.
